MESSAGE FROM THE CEO
Announcing a New Wellness Benefit! Your health matters, and in 2024, we are increasing our Wellness Benefit so we all focus on our health in the coming year. Three things are changing in our Wellness Passport Program: 1. Our Wellness benefit is increasing to $750, over the longstanding benefit of $520! All employees who demonstrate their commitment to their own health by earning 100 passport points can earn a deposit into a tax-advantaged spending plan (Health Savings Account/HSA or Flexible Spending Account/FSA) in January 2025. You don’t need to be enrolled in our medical plan to earn your benefit—just take action to improve your own health in 2024. 2. Our Wellness benefit for spouses enrolled in our health plan coverage is increasing to $250! Enrolled spouses who get their annual physical and then complete a health risk assessment will earn a reward for 2025. 3. Earning the Wellness Benefit is easier than ever! Completing your annual physical and then taking a health risk assessment online gets you across the finish line to 100 points and earns you the $750 benefit. You can still earn an additional 300+ points through other preventive actions like twice annual dental cleanings, meeting biometric health range goals, participating in company -sponsored community service events or completing Health Coaching programs. We will be holding drawings throughout the year to reward our employees who get healthier by taking action and earning more points. Our management team joins you in this important initiative, and we commit to living the example we expect from others. Here’s to a healthier future…for all of us at Crowder.

GRAHAM WWTP
An Expanding City Has a Need The Graham Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion project is located in Graham, NC. This project was a hard bid project, with a current contract value of $74.9 million. Crowder has approximately 45 field staff between Crowder field employees and subcontractors on site. The city of Graham is currently experiencing heavy growth and the last expansion of the plant took place in 2000, so it was clear they needed to start work on expanding the plant. The Crowder team is working on converting two existing aeration basins into 4 BNRs (Biological Nutrient Removal Systems), building a new chemical feed facility, rehabbing two RAS (Return Activated Sludge) pump stations, a new chlorine contact tank, new tertiary filters, new digesters, rehab of existing digester and sludge storage tanks, and building a new maintenance building. Graham is currently experiencing heavy growth and the last expansion of the plant took place in 2000.

Aerial of the new Chlorine Contact Tank and New Digester 3-4 SOG Being Formed
Using Something Old to Make Something New A portion of the new BNRs are being constructed inside the existing basin. This was necessary since the other aeration basin was currently operating within 10ft of the new structure. The original structure was built in the 1970s and was not square or true. The team ended up having to place new concrete on top of the existing basin, which means the new slab thickness had to vary to keep the slope plane consistent and allow for our new walls to tie into the existing structure correctly. Crowder worked with the engineer and adjusted the slab thickness and reinforcing where needed and as existing structure varied. This allowed us to maintain a true plane up the slope and allow our wall forms to be consistent and true. The Crowder team adjusted the plan to make sure the new BNRs were true, but they also had to reassure a nervous Owner. Crowder had to move in 19000 CY of fill to build a pad for the new maintenance building. Once the pad was constructed, the owner was nervous that it was not big enough for the expected traffic for the building. The team laid out the roll up doors on the building as well as the guard rail in the parking lot. The owner then brought their trucks and trailers to see if they could park as intended. Once it was determined there was not enough space to back a trailer into the building, we worked with the engineer to bring in more fill and reconstruct the pad adding additional space as well as adding 6 lf to the building increasing the rollup door widths. The Owner was satisfied with the changes and work progressed.

FOURTH EDITION 2023
The team worked with the engineer and the owner to figure out creative ways to remove the RAS PS from the startup requirements of BNR 1-2. This means temporary power for chemical feed facility along with other temps systems. This will allow us to startup the first phase of the project and allow us to get into the 2nd aeration basin on schedule and not delay the overall project. Crowder overcame the challenges of long equipment lead times and found a creative way to continue on schedule!
Placing the first SOG of Digester 3-4
CROWDER CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL
Getting Creative Unfortunately, Equipment deliveries began pushing the schedule out. The lead time for the MCCs (Motor Control Centers) for the RAS pump station rehab doubled once released into production. This was due to a component shortage. The contract requires both of the RAS pump stations to be rehabbed prior to starting up BNRs 1-2. This delay in delivery would push startup out by 6 months.

Standout Performances Evan Wade (Project Engineer) was assigned to the team about 3 months into the project. He was initially tasked with Div 11 of the project, but due to changes in the team, he took over Div 3 as well. He jumped in and worked diligently on both sections progressing the concrete work all while maintaining his original task in Div 11. Evan’s hard work has kept the project on schedule and is allowing the entire team to be successful. Landon Modlin (Superintendent) has worked extremely hard to maintain and improve the project schedule. Landon communicates daily with the PEs on progress and advises of needs in a timely fashion giving the Project Engineers time to procure materials. This open communication allows our crews to be as productive as possible.

WINDSOR WOODS TIDE GATE
A Tide Gate Structure for the City of Virginia Beach The Crowder team working on the Windsor Woods Tide Gate Project only includes nine employees on site, but it comes with an overall cost of $14M. The tide gate is being constructed as a key part of Virginia Beach’s flood protection program. Tide gates control water flow between a tidewater area and a drained upland area. A tide gate involves a hinged door at the end of a culvert that connects these areas and a mechanism that controls when and how the door is opened to allow water flow in either direction. The structure being built is a flood gate across Thalia Creek that helps protect the local residential areas from flooding during high water events. Thalia Creek, a tributary of the Lynnhaven River, acts as a barrier to active travel between the Town Center and the nearby residential neighborhoods.
The Site Before Beginning Work
Challenging Times Over the Water This project is being built in a very small work area and over a body of water. With such a small workspace, working around the equipment being used can be a dangerous task. Examples of some of the equipment being used includes a 999 crane and a long-reach excavator. Strategic plans were made to plan out the work and maneuvering the equipment into and around the site. Precise crane lift plans were an essential part of the planning process. During the initial work at this site, the Crowder team made use of Crowder-owned barges as a work platform over the water. With work being conducted in such a tight space and over water, all employees at Windsor Woods wear life jackets and there PPE at all times around the site. The pile-driving plan for this project has also been critical to its success. Good teamwork and cooperation of everyone involved was needed while performing the drivability study, creating pile template designs, pile rigging designs, and all the other work plans at the Windsor Woods project. Major Milestones Happening In September, the team completed the concrete pile installation, which was a major milestone for this project. This consisted of the installation of 15EA – 110’ Long – 18” square prestressed precast concrete pile, 5EA if which were battered at a 5:1 angle. All concrete pile driving was self-performed by Crowder using a D-62 hammer and a 999 crane. In October, the team also installed the remaining sheet piles for the tide gate phase 1 cofferdam system along with the dewatering system for the cofferdam. Crowder crews are currently working on the tide gate phase 1 foundation grading and the waler system installation for the permanent bulkhead wall. The phase 1 tide gate concrete slab is also scheduled to pour in November 2023. This project is currently on schedule to be complete by February 2025 and is about 40% complete. Crowder and the City of Virginia Beach continue to work closely together daily as we partner through the many challenges on this project. The project team is doing an excellent job focusing on safety and quality as they progress through the work. On-site leadership and development continue to be outstanding, which has been led by Project Superintendent, Malachi Lawrence and StructuralForeman, Eric Engram. Site Overview

TOYOTA BATTERY MANUFACTURING
Crowder Flips the Switch at the Toyota Mega Site Crowder Industrial Construction became the first contractor to successfully complete commissioning activities in Building 801 for general contractor Kajima Building & Design Group (KBD) at the Greensboro-Randolph Mega Site in Liberty, NC. By doing so, the Crowder team is well ahead of the curve as they begin construction in neighboring Building 802. The Crowder team is responsible for installing the wastewater treatment (WWT) and ultra-pure water (UPW) systems in both buildings. Despite being a comparatively small scope of work, both systems must be operational prior to commissioning all other production systems. Because of that, all eyes remain squarely focused on Crowder’s ability to deliver.
Completed Wastewater Treatment (WWT) System in Building 801
Small Fish in a BIG Pond Once complete, the Greensboro-Randolph Mega Site will be commissioned as the Toyota Battery Manufacturing, North Carolina (TBMNC) facility. The $3.8 billion facility is Toyota’s first-ever battery plant in North America and will employee 2,100 people to manufacture lithium-ion batteries for both Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicles. With production planned to begin in 2025, this plant will serve a central role in Toyota’s leadership towards a fully electrified future and help meet the goal of carbon neutrality in their vehicles and global operations by 2035. As to be expected with a project of this magnitude, the Crowder team was constantly engaged in a game of chess involving countless other contractors vying for access to the same work area. Both Mike Trent and Eric Word worked seamlessly with KBD, Toyota, and other subcontractors to mitigate hazards and protect our workforce while simultaneously maintaining the strict schedule and quality expectations.
“The biggest compliment anyone can pay you is to invite you to come back.” – WT Crowder [10]
FOURTH EDITION 2023
Because of that, the Crowder team continues to succeed and stand out in the crowd in spite of the small scope of work. Recently, Toyota supervision contacted Crowder to pursue additional scopes of work, working directly with Toyota. Ben Hesley responded, “It’s reassuring to see our efforts recognized and appreciated by the client. It’s a testament to their hard work and dedication that we’ve been presented a spectacular opportunity to develop a relationship with one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in the world.”

Going the Extra Mile Throughout the course of the project, the Crowder team has continually gone above and beyond to provide assistance for both the general contractor and the client. Whether it is coordinating activities with other contractors, recognizing and resolving design issues to avoid delays, or providing alternative methods to reduce cost or save time, Crowder remains committed to providing a superior performance and a positive difference to the client.
