by Scott Allen, Corporate Safety Director Working safely in hot weather starts long before the workday begins. Hydration is not something that can be “caught up on” during a shift. We should begin each day well-hydrated by drinking water regularly throughout the evening before and again in the morning before arriving to the project. Research shows that even mild dehydration can reduce physical performance, increase fatigue, impair decision-making, and make it more difficult for the body to regulate temperature. We should also limit alcohol consumption, especially the night before work, because alcohol increases fluid loss and can leave the body dehydrated before the workday starts.

Nutrition plays a critical role in the body’s ability to handle heat stress. We should make efforts to eat balanced meals that include complex carbohydrates, lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables. These foods provide the energy, electrolytes, and nutrients needed to support physical work and proper body function. Skipping meals, relying on energy drinks, or consuming excessive amounts of sugary foods can contribute to energy crashes and place additional stress on the body. Foods with high water content, such as watermelon, oranges, berries, cucumbers, and leafy vegetables, can also help support hydration and recovery.

Quality sleep is another important defense against heat-related illness. During sleep, the body recovers from physical exertion and prepares for the demands of the next day. Studies have shown that individuals who consistently get 7 to 9 hours of sleep are better able to regulate body temperature, maintain concentration, and recognize early warning signs of heat stress. Fatigue can mask symptoms of heat illness and increase the likelihood of poor decisions, reduced awareness, and incidents on the job. A well-rested employee is better equipped to work safely in challenging environmental conditions.

Staying physically active, maintaining a healthy body weight, managing chronic health conditions, drinking water consistently, eating nutritious meals, and getting adequate sleep all improve the body’s ability to tolerate heat.

As for Crowder, we will continue to provide water, mandate and allow breaks in shaded areas as needed, and offer training on how to avoid a heat-related illness. Each of us has a personal responsibility to arrive at work prepared. P.O. HOFFER/GLENVILLE LAKE WTF IMPROVEMENTS

P.O. Hoffer/Glenville Lake WTF Improvements Project Modernizing Fayetteville’s Water Treatment Plant The Hoffer/Glenville Lake Water Treatment Facility (WTF) Improvements project in Fayetteville, North Carolina represents a major investment in strengthening the city’s drinking water infrastructure. Awarded to Crowder as a hard-bid project, the work began following the official Notice to Proceed on April 15, 2024, with field operations kicking off shortly thereafter. Initially valued at around $20 million, the project has grown to approximately $25 million through change orders. The scope spans two active treatment plants, the P.O. Hoffer Plant and the Glenville Plant, and includes construction of a new electrical building, a chemical carbon slurry building, and finished filtered water mixing vaults, along with extensive process mechanical and electrical upgrades. At peak construction, the job supported a workforce of about 25 personnel, primarily Crowder employees with support from select subcontractors. After just over two years of work, the team is now nearing completion, with final closeout anticipated in August.

Working in an Active Water Treatment Environment Executing construction within fully operational drinking water treatment facilities required careful planning, coordination, and flexibility.

Both plants serve the Fayetteville community and run at or near capacity during peak summer demand, limiting opportunities for shutdowns and system interruptions. Strict flow restrictions dictated when and how work could be performed, with narrow windows available for tying into or upgrading critical systems. Despite these constraints, Crowder successfully maintained continuous water service throughout most of the project, with only minimal and carefully planned interruptions. Coordination with the City was essential, especially when sequencing work such as high service pump upgrades, electrical changeovers, and system tie-ins. This level of collaboration ensured that infrastructure improvements could proceed without compromising the reliability of the water supply.

Delivering Results Through Teamwork and Innovation Despite the challenges, the Hoffer/Glenville project stands out as a success in execution, safety, and client partnership. One of the most complex scopes involved replacing buried high service pump discharge piping, valves, and cross connections, critical components located deep underground. After overcoming the initial pipeline failure, the team regrouped, implemented a bypass system, and successfully completed the installation with precision. Electrical work was also a major component, particularly at the Glenville Plant where the entire control system was replaced, and at the P.O. Hoffer Plant where high-voltage infrastructure upgrades were completed in carefully coordinated phases. Throughout the project, Crowder maintained an excellent safety record, with only minor incidents reported, and consistently met or beat schedule milestones on critical activities. Most importantly, the team built and maintained a strong relationship with the City of Fayetteville through transparency, collaboration, and reliable performance. As the project winds down—with major work at P.O. Hoffer complete and final electrical adjustments continuing at Glenville—it leaves behind modernized infrastructure and a proven example of Crowder’s commitment to quality, safety and client satisfaction.

Overcoming Challenges in the Field The project team encountered several challenges that required quick thinking and adaptive solutions. One of the earliest difficulties was a lack of reliable documentation for existing conditions, which led to unexpected conflicts with buried utilities and discrepancies in utility depths. These unknowns forced the team to adjust building locations and revise installation approaches in real time. A more critical challenge occurred during deep excavation, approximately 20 feet below grade, when an active, unrestrained pipeline operating under full flow failed. The resulting pipe break required immediate emergency response, including stabilizing the system and implementing a temporary bypass to maintain operations. Designing and installing this bypass system extended the schedule by approximately six months, given the ongoing flow restrictions and continued discovery of buried utilities. Additionally, the project experienced notable personnel turnover, including the departure of the original Project Manager and Lead Superintendent. The team overcame this by continuously maintaining strong communication between field and office teams to keep the project on track.

SCDOT GREENVILLE I-85/I-385 WALL IMPROVEMENTS

SCDOT Greenville I-85/I-385 Wall Improvements Project Transforming a Key Corridor

Located in Greenville, South Carolina, the SCDOT I 85/I 385 Wall Improvements Project is delivering both functional upgrades and a more unified appearance along one of the region’s busiest interstate corridors. The project began with seven existing barrier walls, an inconsistent mix of pile panels and shotcrete systems that varied in condition and visual quality. Crowder’s work is focused on bringing cohesion to the corridor by removing and replacing outdated structures with modern, uniform designs. The scope includes hydro-demolition and reconstruction of three shotcrete walls with a new ashlar finish, as well as the complete replacement of four pile panel walls. In total, the team is constructing nearly 4,800 linear feet of new barrier wall, installing 396 piles and more than 32,000 square feet of panels, along with approximately 13,000 square feet of shotcrete work. With a contract value of just over $18 million, the project represents a significant investment in both infrastructure performance and aesthetics, improving the overall driving experience through Greenville.

Overcoming Access and Construction Challenges

Working within an active interstate environment has made access the defining challenge of this project. Strict SCDOT lane closure requirements and high traffic volumes limit when and how crews can operate, requiring careful planning and constant coordination. To address this, Crowder implemented innovative solutions such as the use of a movable steel barrier system known as Highway Guard, allowing for faster adjustments and improved flexibility compared to traditional concrete barriers. The team also collaborated closely with SCDOT and engineers to revise traffic control plans, including rerouting traffic via a frontage road to create additional workspace.

At particularly congested locations like Woodruff Road, crews executed accelerated 72 to 96 hour continuous operations, alternating between full closures and lane closures to complete critical work ahead of peak travel periods. Weather added another layer of complexity, as restrictions on wet roadway conditions often limited nighttime operations. By improving site access and shifting work into both day and night shifts, the team maintained steady progress despite these constraints.

Beyond its technical scope, the project stands out as a testament to Crowder’s adaptability and strength in delivering nontraditional work. Unlike more straightforward bridges or structural projects, this effort required creative problem-solving and detailed pre-planning at every stage. One of the most significant early challenges involved hydro-demolition operations, which required approximately 20,000 gallons of water per night. The team developed a solution to supply water from an existing hydrant beneath the interstate and implemented an on-site filtration and discharge system using riprap and erosion control measures to safely manage runoff. Throughout the project, success has been driven by proactive planning—identifying challenges early, building detailed work plans, and maintaining the flexibility to adjust methods in real time.

Team members have consistently stepped up to take on new responsibilities as the job has progressed, demonstrating strong buy-in and ownership across the board. PLANT HAMMOND BESS PHASE 1

Plant Hammond BESS Phase 1 Project Transforming a Legacy Coal Plant into a Modern Energy Storage Hub The Plant Hammond BESS Phase 1 project, located in Rome, Georgia, represents a major advancement in grid modernization through the installation of utility-scale battery energy storage.

Our scope on this project includes the installation of 68 Tesla Megapack 2XL battery units alongside the procurement and installation of 17 34.5KV transformers. The project also required the construction of 17 concrete foundations, each designed to support four Megapacks and one transformer, as well as comprehensive site work, installation of 1000 kcmil cable, and all associated control and communication systems. Additional components include a pre-cast communications building, perimeter fencing, a fire detection system with thermal cameras, and tie-ins to the owner’s generator step-up (GSU) substation. The primary BESS pad spans approximately four acres, forming the central operational footprint of this system.

Supporting Grid Stability Through Advanced Battery Energy Storage The project site carries historical significance, as it was once an active coal-fired power plant that supplied electricity to much of Georgia for decades. Following decommissioning, the plant was demolished, and coal ash remediation remains ongoing. Southern Company engaged Crowder as an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor to repurpose the site and contribute to grid stabilization efforts under Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) requirements. The installed Tesla Megapack system is capable of delivering energy for up to four hours, helping mitigate peak demand and reduce the risk of blackouts driven by increased loads from data centers and extreme weather events. At peak construction, the project maintained an average workforce of 36 employees, consisting of 10 overhead staff and 26 direct craft workers.

Several key challenges shaped execution of the Plant Hammond BESS Phase 1 project. The first involved completing Phase 1 while incorporating accommodations for a future Phase 2. This required the team to reevaluate portions of the scope and implement strategic modifications to improve efficiency and accelerate future installation efforts. A second challenge stemmed from site logistics, particularly the coordination of oversized Megapack and transformer deliveries. To address congestion and avoid bottlenecks, project leadership maintained strong communication with the owner, vendor logistics teams, and transport drivers, while the rigging crew implemented a well-coordinated offloading and installation plan to ensure safety and efficiency. Weather delays posed a third challenge, which the team navigated by implementing extended work schedules, either advancing work ahead of forecasted weather events or accelerating recovery efforts afterward to maintain project momentum.

Delivering Results Through Expertise, Team Performance, and Lessons Learned The project’s success is highlighted by the efficient execution of equipment receiving, setting, and installation, driven by an experienced mechanical and rigging crew with prior experience in similar scopes.

Careful integration of delivery coordination, site logistics, and rigging plans allowed for smooth operations despite tight space constraints. The project also underscores Crowder’s deep expertise in power generation and medium-voltage systems, supported by strong collaboration with owners, vendors and engineering partners.

Two standout contributors include Project Engineer Jordan Demarco, whose leadership and multitasking capabilities have been instrumental from mobilization to near completion, and QC Manager Ray Soldinie, who ensured all quality and documentation standards were met despite heightened requirements. As the project enters commissioning, it serves as Crowder’s second successful collaboration with Southern Company and provides valuable lessons learned that will enhance safety, efficiency, and performance on future BESS projects of similar scope.

Tony’s team played a critical role in one of the most challenging aspects of the project—responding to the major pipeline blowout during deep excavation and leading the effort to stabilize the situation, design and implement a complex bypass system, and ultimately complete the repairs. Throughout this process, they worked safely and efficiently under intense pressure, navigating strict flow restrictions and demanding deadlines without interrupting water service to the City of Fayetteville. Despite a few expected hurdles along the way, such as passing pressure testing and disinfection requirements, the crew remained focused, solution-oriented, and complaint-free. Their commitment to safety, quality, and teamwork has enabled the project to progress successfully despite the many challenges associated with upgrading operating facilities that are also around 100 years old. The crews at LM/LR have repeatedly and consistently met and in many cases exceeded expectations to support the project safety goals, adapt to changes/set-backs in the field and deal with an extremely demanding project while ensuring that work is completed efficiently to the high standards that Crowder Industrial is known for providing. Their efforts while maintaining a positive attitude through adversity have been the reasons for the current success of the LM/LR Project and they are well deserving of our recognition.

Industrial Kameron Hamilton joined the Industrial division this year as an Assistant Project Manager and is working at the Winston Salem RNG project.

Kameron has a B.S. degree in Construction Management from Bowling Green State University and has been working in construction for 7 years.

Kameron enjoys martial arts, weightlifting, skateboarding, snowboarding, boogie boarding, and fantasy football.

Joining the Fabrication team as a Project Manager in February, Tim Appleton has over 26 years of construction experience. Tim has a B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Clemson University. Tim and his wife, Mary, have two sons, Derek and Kevin and two grandsons, Dean and Ezra. Tim enjoys football, baseball, and 60’s muscle cars.

With a Construction Management degree from Western Carolina University, Zion Biggers is working at our Lake Michie/ Little River project as a Project Engineer.

Zion and his fiancé, Jasmine Connelly, have a daughter, Josephine Grace Biggers. Zion likes chilling with his family and watching sports.

Richard Bobinger joined Crowder Industrial division in April 2026 as a Technical Director. He has 12 years combined experience in fuel ethanol and renewable natural gas industries and most recently served as Engineer of Record on a 3,000 SCFM landfill gas project.

Richard graduated from Marquette and holds a professional engineering license and project management professional license. Richard is married with four children; ages 8,7,5-1/2, and 3. Richard enjoys camping, hiking, fishing, and generally just being outdoors.

Alex Carrillo joined the Industrial Division in May as a Quality Control Engineer and will be working at the New Hill BESS project in North Carolina. Alex has over 10 years of construction experience. In his spare time, Alex enjoys weightlifting and spending time with his family.

Joining the Industrial division in May, Will Lewis is a Project Engineer working at the Maiden Creek BESS project in Newton, NC. Will has a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Southern University. Will enjoys golf, pickleball, hiking, and hunting.

Civil & Environmental Greg Machmiller joined Crowder in January 2026 as a Project Manager for the Southside WWTP project.

He holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Old Dominion University. Prior to joining Crowder, he spent 21 years in the U.S. Army serving as an engineer. After retiring from the Army, Greg worked as a Project Manager for a construction firm specializing in water and wastewater treatment plants. Overall, he brings 14 years of construction experience to the Crowder team, with a strong focus on water and wastewater infrastructure. He’s excited to be part of the Southside WWTP project and the Crowder family!

New Faces

Andrew Ausse is originally from Warner Robins, GA. He recently graduated in May 2026 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with a Master of Arts in Military Ethics from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. He’s currently working as a Project Engineer focusing on a wide range of areas at the John Franklin Kimes Water Treatment Plant in Randleman, NC. Outside of work he enjoys being at church, working out, and reading.

Daniel Hogue is currently working as a Project Engineer at the Rocky River WWTP project. Daniel was raised in Shelby, NC and attended North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. Daniel is excited to learn and grow as Crowder team member. When not working, Daniel enjoys reading and live music.

New Faces Cont.

James Abbot and his family relocated from Florida about a year and a half ago, looking for a fresh start and a place where they could truly embrace their love for nature.

North Carolina has been the perfect fit—they spend almost all their free time outdoors exploring this beautiful state. Whether James is hitting the local trails on mountain bikes or loading up the kayaks for a day on the water, he loves every bit of the scenery here and he and his family are so happy to call this area home. James is excited and grateful for Crowder to give him the opportunity to join the team as an Electrical Superintendent.

James Russell joined Crowder in February of 2026 as a Senior Project Manager. James brings 27 years of construction experience to the team in Virginia, with the last 12 years focused on the water/ wastewater industry. He holds a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine. Previous work assignments with Kiewit and PC Construction have taken James to a variety of water projects in Dallas, TX and Charleston, SC. James started his career as a concrete carpenter, for a small construction company in central Maine, learning the trades with hands on experience. When James is not supporting the team’s efforts in the greater Richmond,VA area, you can find him on a baseball field or basketball court coaching one of his three children, daughter Maya (14) or sons Tatum (10) and Cohen (8). James, his wife Ashley, and three children reside in Williamsburg,VA.

Matthew Pry relocated from Louisville, KY, to the Atlanta area and joined Crowder in February 2026 as a Project Engineer supporting the Gwinnett County On-Call Program.

He is currently completing a degree in Business Administration at the University of Louisville and brings 12 years of combined operations management and project engineering experience to the team. Throughout his career, he has contributed to projects ranging from local public works improvements to large aviation infrastructure projects, up to hyperscale data center developments, working alongside some of the world’s leading organizations in defense, logistics, and technology. Matthew is passionate about continuous professional growth and is currently pursuing his Certified Associate Construction Manager (CACM) credential through the Construction Management Association of America.

Outside of work, he enjoys spend time with his wife and daughter at sporting events, amusement parks, and exploring new places around Georgia.

Chase Barden is a Superintendent in Training at the Terrible Creek WRF project. He has over 15 years of experience in the construction industry, specializing in plumbing and industrial piping.

He is a licensed plumber in NC and enjoys working in a team environment.

Chase spends his free time hunting, fishing, and spending time with his 2 children.

Heavy Civil Todd Kirkpatrick joined Crowder Heavy/Civil in May this year. Todd is originally from Charlotte and spent many years working in construction safety, beginning his career in the mechanical industry.Todd has performed safety functions on many large jobsites such as high rises, hospitals and data center projects. Part of Todd’s experience also included a role as a safety trainer and developer providing safety requirements and best practices for the workers in the construction industry. He is currently assigned to the Duke Mountain Island project and is excited to be part of the Crowder Team. He is a motorcycle enthusiast and enjoys bicycling around Charlotte’s Greenways.

Sam Zhou joined Crowder Heavy/ Civil as an Estimator in March 2026.

He graduated in 2019 from Clemson University with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering.

Before joining, Sam has worked in operations on the Inland Port Greer, I-40 Gorge Bridges, and the Charlotte Airport West Dual Taxi Lane Expansion projects at Kiewit and Zachry Construction. He enjoys learning new things, travelling, eating and socializing with his loved ones as well as catering to the whims of his kitten.

Manny Privette joined Crowder Heavy Civil in March 2026 as a new Project Manager. He graduated from NC State University in 2009 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Manny brings 17 years of experience in heavy civil construction. Manny and his wife, Holly, have been married for 10 years.

They have 5-year-old twins, Easton and Ellie. In his free time, Manny enjoys watching Easton and Ellie play basketball, t-ball, and soccer. He also enjoys hunting, camping, and NC State sports.

Corporate Sarah Logan grew up in the Northwest suburbs of Chicago and graduated with her bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Ohio State University. After graduating, she worked in public accounting for a couple of years before moving to Charlotte and joining Crowder this past January. Outside of work, Sarah enjoys exploring Charlotte, staying active with hikes, runs & workouts, and hanging out with her dog.

Danielle Salada joined Crowder in June 2026 and brings more than 18 years of Human Resources experience, with a specialized background in the heavy highway road and bridge construction industry.

Originally from, Lancaster County, PA, Danielle recently relocated to NC to join her husband, Kevin, of 25 years after his transfer in May 2025.

Together, they have a son and daughter, as well as a dog, Finn. Outside of work, Danielle enjoys traveling to Florida to visit her son and making trips to University of Pittsburgh to watch her daughter play volleyball. Danielle is looking forward to exploring different parts of the South. When she’s not on the road, you’ll likely find Danielle cheering on her favorite Philadelphia sports teams. GO BIRDS

New Additions Congratulations to Gina Bartlett on the birth of her first grandchild!

Turner Ryan Payton was born on March 30, 2026. He weighed 7 lbs. 11 oz. and measured 20 inches long.

Gina is an Admin Assistant in our Heavy Civil Division.

Please congratulate Jon and Jill Karcher on the birth of their 1st child, Grayson Aloysius who was born Monday, April 20th, 2026, weighing 9lbs 7oz and 22.5 inches long. Jon is a Regional Safety Coordinator in our Heavy Civil Division.

Congratulations to Scott Allen! He just became a 1st time grandfather.

His son Nick & wife Lauren Jordan welcomed their little baby girl on the evening of June 8th. Rosalie Grace came four weeks early weighing 5.5 lbs. Scott is the Corporate Safety Director.

During National Apprenticeship Week, we proudly recognized the strength and impact of our registered apprenticeship program in our Industrial division—a cornerstone of workforce development and career advancement within our organization.

At the heart of this program are our 31 dedicated apprentices, each gaining hands-on experience, industry knowledge, and the skills needed to build successful careers in the trades. Their commitment to learning and growth reflects the true spirit of apprenticeship: earning while learning and developing expertise that lasts a lifetime.

Guiding them every step of the way are our 24 experienced craft instructors. These mentors bring not only technical excellence but also a passion for teaching, ensuring that each apprentice receives the support, guidance, and real-world insight necessary to succeed.
