Camping at Crowden: Increasing Access to Classical Music

Crowden offers more opportunities for short-term musical study than ever before through our popular camps and workshops.

For many of our young Crowden musicians, attending one of our camps is the first step of a lifelong musical journey. No matter the level or age group, all Crowden camps and workshops are designed to give students increased access to classical music, from the initial joys of discovering instruments, to the

rich rewards of performing chamber music masterworks.

“The shorter time-frame of workshops and camps offers many opportunities to students,” Executive and Artistic Director Doris Fukawa explains. “For young children just beginning to explore their interest in music, a short and fun music camp provides a wonderful first introduction, with minimal commitment needed. Short workshops provide adult students with an intense music experience that easily fits into their busy schedules. Our workshops and camps can augment a student’s daily instrumental study, help them prepare for future mu-

sical endeavors, and provide an inspirational, immersive experience for focused musicians.”

Many families choose Crowden’s Scrape, Squawk, and Bang! Instrument Discovery Camp as a first musical experience. This popular oneweek camp exposes young children to all the instrument groups of an orchestra, as well as musical concepts, song and dance, and outdoor play. Summer Strings provides a more in-depth introduction to instrumental study and group play, and is appropriate for both complete beginners and intermediate

Board Update

The Crowden Board of Trustees has elected a new roster of officers to serve in the current fiscal year. CARY KOH (Crowden School Class of ’86) will serve as Board Chair, JEROME MATTHEWS and JAMES

Fall Preview

On September 20th, Crowden’s Fall Preview was hosted by trustee JOAN BALTER , in her lovely Berkeley home. Quartet San Francisco’s

JEREMY COHEN joined Doris Fukawa for a rousing conversation, reflecting on their mutual experiences as students of Anne Crowden, and her impact on both their lives and careers. Mr. Cohen played excerpts of pieces featured on QSF’s recently released recording, A QSF Journey.

Crowden Fanclub Road Trip

On the weekend of October 6–7, DORIS FUKAWA and several of Crowden’s loyal supporters made a dedicated road trip to support NOAH BENDIX-BALGLEY (Crowden School Class of ’97) for the West Coast Premiere of his composition Fidl Fantazye, performed by the Santa Cruz Symphony and conducted by Daniel Stewart. Noah is currently First Concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker, so it was a rare treat to hear him perform so close to home. Our group met with Noah for an intimate brunch and conversation Sunday morning,

with shared memories, laughter, and a fascinating peek inside the mind of one of Crowden’s beloved alums.

players (and often serves as preparation for entrance into Crowden’s day school). Crowden invites several students from its public school outreach program in Oakland’s Sankofa Academy to participate in both these introductory camps, on full scholarship.

For young musicians who are interested in developing the skills needed to perform chamber music, Crowden offers a Young Musicians’ Chamber Music Academy each summer. The crown jewel of Crowden’s summer

programming is our prestigious Chamber Music Workshop for teens and college-aged students. This intensive workshop is often the highlight of participants’ musical year, and increasingly attracts students from all over the nation. Our annual five-day Adult Chamber Music Workshop is similarly treasured by participants.

“Chamber music lies at the heart of any Crowden education, so we wanted to provide a seamless, sequential trajectory toward that goal in our summer programming,” remarks Eugene Sor, Crowden’s Associate Artistic Director.

Crowden’s camp and workshop offerings are not just for string players. Our new piano lab facilities provide increased opportunities for piano students, including our Piano Partners camp, which focuses on four-hands, six-hands, and piano duo chamber music works. For

students interested in composition, the John Adams Young Composers Workshop provides a stimulating opportunity for creative growth, culminating in public performances of student works by professional musicians.

Last year, Crowden launched its first Winter Strings and Piano Camp, providing yet more access for complete beginners, intermediate string players, and pianists. More than forty students participated in the inaugural session.

Overall, Crowden summer and winter programs serve 300 students between the ages of five and eighty-two.

As one happy camper commented, “I can’t wait until next year!”

Your contribution will help to ensure our vision of great classical music in this community for generations to come.
