-TMBMITW-

For the first four issues of The Most Beautiful Man in the World, we’ve travelled around the world to photograph interesting, intriguing (and yes handsome) men. For issue five, we felt it time to stay close to home. This is our British edition. Appropriately, we started right at home at my apartment in Deptford, south-east London, where we photographed James on the roof terrace. James is a plumber by trade and though it had occurred to me that he would make a great addition to TMBMITW, it wasn’t until my friend was staying from the States that we decided to ask him to sit for us. Happily, he agreed. The results close this issue. But The Most Beautiful Man in the World, as the name suggests, is a magazine that travels, so we looked for stories across the UK, from the skylines of Newcastle to the beaches of Sussex. Along the way we crushed hard on the men we photographed, like young footballer Kieran in the Forest of Dean. But our hearts also belonged to a girl in this issue. When we travelled to Herefordshire we fell in love with Sophie, an

Our cover story is inspired by the smash British television series Broadchurch - Viewers of Chris Chibnall’s gritty whodunit have been gripped by the sensational storytelling and the beauty of the show’s ‘Jurassic Coast’ setting. But it was up and coming British actor Jonathan Bailey who caught our eye and kept us glued to our screens: he’s the star of the issue and every bit as compelling to watch in real life as the hit shows we tune in to see him in. For TMBMITW’s fifth edition we hoped to capture a well-rounded vision of contemporary Britain. There are nods to tradition in the Henley Royal Regatta. There is a snapshot of that most modern icon, the Great British service station. Most importantly, there are beautiful men. Tell us about the men that catch your eye; the lads you pass every day, or make a special detour for. If he’s nearby or overseas, we’ll travel for The Most Beautiful Man in the World. Frank.

Artist I wasn’t very good at anything in school apart from art so that was my way out of education. I did a lot of painting at high school in Ipswich. It was there I started stitching into my painting, inspired by my grandma, Josie, who did a lot of knitting and sewing. She was a huge influence on me growing up. She’s now 84 and still drives a Winnebago. She also breeds parrots. Model I was scouted while studying Fine Art Textiles at Goldsmiths, University of London. Moving to London was a big thing so someone asking me if I wanted to model? I didn’t even know what that was. One of my university teachers had a daughter who was a model and she convinced me to try it out. I’m so glad I did because my career has been going for 12 years now. Photographer Modelling gave me the opportunity to travel around the world. I met a lot of great photographers and started picking up the camera myself. I shot for a number of fashion and men’s magazines. One of my favourite photographers is Jeff Wall, who stages these scenes which are really nice. My favourite artists

-026-

are Barnett Newman, Barbara Hepworth and Matthew Barney. Ceramicist Ceramics was always something I wanted to try but never got the opportunity. By chance, I went on a Tinder date to a taster course with clay and fell in love with it. It was just my date and me and the teacher so it was really special. The next day I bought a kiln and a wheel on eBay and within a week had asked my grandma if I could move into her shed and start a studio there. Entrepreneur I started a textile business after university. Graduating from university, the question was how do you make money from being a creative? Which is partly why I started the textiles business which now runs full time with nine staff. Am I easily bored? Yes! I’m always looking for new ideas and moving forward. There’s no point in living life sitting watching TV all day. TV star Going on The Great Pottery Throw Down was a surprise. I didn’t think I would ever see myself on a TV show, for one. On top of that, to win it was pretty special. I saw the ad for a ceramics competition. I enquired about it and applied to see how far I’d get. It was a very long process. There were some pretty hard tasks on the show like making a fully functional toilet in four hours. I was like, sure I’ll just knock that up. @RyanBarrettUK

Zach loves living in the U.K. because of the possibilities open to him, though he sounds more than capable of making the most of them himself. A 17-year-old Essex boy whose modelling career has started to take off, he puts his ambition down to boxing. ‘My Dad boxed at quite a high level and always encouraged me to be focused in this respect, training me three times per week, which gave me the passion for the sport,’ he says. It was the boxing and the way it turned this self-described ‘chubby kid’ into a lean, mean fighting machine that steered Zach front of camera. But the skills he learned in the ring work in life too. ‘Boxing puts a strain on you both physically and mentally but it’s great for the body in many ways and it helps you as a person,’ he notes. And Zach’s own recipe for success, whatever the field of play? ‘I don’t aspire to be anything or anyone but myself. It may sound clichéd but I think that if you can just be true to yourself, you’ll be the happiest, best version of ‘you’ possible. @ZachHartman1

surface tension At Henley Royal Regatta the battle lasts five days and the party much, much longer Photography Ian Bartlett

-HENLEY-

-TMBMITW-

In historic Henley-on-Thames they do things in a distinctly British fashion. The annual rowing event, Henley Royal Regatta, is a case in point. Established in 1839, the Henley Royal Regatta predates any national or international rowing organizations so operates under its own set of rules and regulations. A five-day event over the first weekend in July, Henley involves a lengthy number of qualifying races. Rik, a rower from Amsterdam, explains the set up thus: ‘Henley is an unusual race as it is always one against one. There is one winner – the other is the loser. When you’re the loser you’re done - you can go home. When you win you go on to the next round. It’s a hard competition. It starts on a Wednesday, so when you are still on the course by Saturday everybody is looking at you.’ Such is the demand to compete, Henley has to whittle down the select few. Ben, a coach at Thames Rowing Club, says this can create as grand a spectacle as the main event. ‘If the event is oversubscribed, a select portion are allowed straight in, -076-

the rest have to do a time trial, the fastest crews filling the remaining slots,’ he tells TMBMITW. ‘This alone is a great spectacle with about  seven hours of continuous rowing with much cheering when crews are announced. Just qualifying a crew can mean as much to a club, college or school as winning.’ Crews from around the world come to race ‘about one mile and 550 yards’, going from the town’s Temple Island upstream to Henley Bridge. Crowds line the banks from start to finish and afterwards to celebrate. This being a distinctly British event, a dress code is in place: jackets and ties for the men, knee length dresses for the women. In typically British style, it all ends with a big party, which says Ben, can go on for days. ‘The parties are big. So big about seven years ago the police really had to sort things out as the town was getting overrun with revellers. For winners, the parties can go on for weeks, even months.’ @thebartlett

The sleepy village of East Preston lies roughly halfway between Littlehampton and Worthing in West Sussex on the south coast of England. The pebble beaches and shallow waters make it perfect for all sorts of watersports, especially paddle boarding of which Bruno is a fan. He also likes to meditate, perfecting breathing exercises and yoga. It helps him to relax and centre himself.

It’s from a poem by Walt Whitman, O Me! O Life! One idea about it is that when I’m on the cold slab in a mortuary, the person tending me might get hope and joy from reading it.
