I’ve been travelling. A lot. All over the world, racking up air miles. Sometimes I’m getting to meet and shoot beautiful men for Crotch, in exciting exotic locations, somehow missing any semblance of winter.. And sometimes I’m working on my music styling, in and out of venues, arenas, and festivals. The lines between life and work become blurred, and I have to step back and remind myself to live. I’ve had a couple of pinch myself moments this last few months, and its been an exciting time. It’s all a balancing act. I’ve always found that the gym can clear my head, but it’s not always enough to just sweat it out; sometimes I need to get out, hit a club, and dance it out too. Or re-connect with some nature (the beach usually does it for me).

It’s the same for all of us. We need to remember that there’s a big fun world out there to discover.

Get up and get ourselves outside and experience it. A feeling of escapism inspires this issue. We roll in the Sydney surf with Kyle and Jay, we catch up with Luke Evans about his new lifestyle brand BDXY. JeanPaul Paula takes us around the Wasteland Party in Amsterdam, and we get to meet a Brazilian group of friends as they take the afternoon off in the sunshine. Sam Salter, welcomes us inside his day job, in a north London dance studio, and Owen kicks back poolside, tossing his trunks aside.

Inspired by Luke’s successful career in film, the brand takes its cues from classic Hollywood, mixing nostalgia with modern and sustainable everyday staples, from T-shirts to vests, shorts to underwear and swimwear.

The biggest challenge, says the Welsh actor, was finding others who wanted to go on the journey with BDXY Studio. “Sustainably made products are not easily made and are not cheap. To do it correctly you have to take the time and build a team to manufacture,” he explains. “The biggest issue was finding people who believe in our passion and understand what we are trying to achieve and to keep it all on budget.” All three were on the same page in this respect, adds Chris. “We live in a world now where little changes can make a big difference, especially in the fashion world. This was something very important to all of us as a brand.”

Obviously, it would be off-brand of Crotch not to talk swimwear, especially the skimpy kind. The brand’s name comes from a marriage of the words bold and sexy --

Shane! We loved your shoot for Crotch. Does it feel different to shoot as yourself?

It definitely feels different; as Courtney I know I’m a hot slut! I’ve done it hundreds of times. As Shane, I haven’t really sexually objectified myself before. To paraphrase - how the hell you gonna to let someone objectify you if you can’t objectify yourself? I wanted to take these photos and capture my body at age 42 in the best shape it’s ever been and have those memories to look back on.

How did you find the shoot?

The shoot with the photographer, Mitch was great.

I’ve been friends with him since 2005 so have a great connection. As Courtney, I have the hair, makeup, and costumes, so shooting is easier. But out of drag it feels a bit more vulnerable. But I know I’m safe in Mitch’s hands and he catches the light in all the right places!

Do you have to think about your body shape as a drag artist?

Growing up there was always the ideology of having muscles and being a valued as a gay man. That never fitted me, but drag did. I was going to the gym with the wrong motivation. As I have gotten older I feel more comfortable with my masculinity and femininity. It lets me embrace the masculine more in drag and feminine more out of drag. Courtney’s had a good trot and taken over my body for the last 24 years. Now it’s my turn to take over.

What makes you feel good?

A big part of it is getting older and being more aware of my bones and body; making sure I keep fit and healthy, and feeling good on the inside. So I can enjoy doing what I do for as long as I can.

Have you made changes to your body in drag?

I don’t wear boobs anymore. After Australian Idol, they pitched me as a ‘female’ pop star, and I just went with the flow. But over the years, with progressive

performing, I just felt that wearing boobs wasn’t comfortable for me anymore. I wasn’t pretending to be a woman; I was just expressing myself with hair, makeup, and costumes.

What is the most physically tough aspect of work?

Being

painful!

undergarments, wigs, and makeup -- after a long time it’s a lot. Even if you’re not performing, you always have to be ‘on, ’ so it takes a physical and emotional toll.

Who is the fittest drag queen on the circuit?

I stand on the strong, sturdy shoulders of Kameron Michaels! Also, Ashley Swift from my drag family, a drag queen with pecs. She showed me how you can have a masculine body and still be in drag.

What’s been the biggest change in the evolution of drag?

Since 2014 --Drag Race season 6 -- drag has been featured and taken seriously in ways that it hadn’t before. The negative side is there can be hate towards queens, and I think it’s a result of the visibility drag queens now have. But drag and queer identity are celebrations, not threats.

Finally, what makes Shane feel sexy?

I feel sexy when I get to be completely myself and feel desired! @CourtneyAct

If we were on a date with Kevin, which we want to be (I mean, look at him), we would ask him a couple of things.

First, could we get some beach-read recommendations from his Twitch bookclub? “Lie with Me, by Philippe Besson,” he suggests. “It’s so beautiful and poetic. I can’t think of a better queer love story that appeals to all generations.” Sold! How about he tells us the secret of his hot bod. “Good genetics and great lighting do wonders.” And finally, what is his favourite body part?

“I like my armpits. People tell me I have nice ones. It’s kind of nice cuz I don’t know how to improve or alter any aspect of my armpits so it’s this little reminder that even without the muscle or aesthetics, men will still find something about me attractive.”

JeanPaul Paula wears a lot of different hats for work. He is an artist, creative director, film director, photographer, model, and performance artist. Oh, and he just started his own talent agency for LGBTQA+ individuals of colour. How come his resume is so full? “I have many shapes that I can fit myself into,” JeanPaul explains over email. “The different disciplines that I have mastered over the years are all an extension of me. Being a creative director I get to use my talents over a larger scope of medium, allowing me to think with the people that I work with as well as making whatever we are working on work of quality.”

All this work would suggest there is little in the way of downtime, but JeanPaul insists most of his work is fun. That said, he doesn’t mix business with pleasure, “unless that is part of the project”. Pleasure is the name of the game at Wasteland, a long-running fetish event in Amsterdam and Berlin, where Crotch photographed JeanPaul. “It’s part of the Amsterdam DNA with veins running deep into the Dutch fetish and open-minded scene,” he explains. “Wasteland Summerfest is held at the IJdijk. It’s a daytime festival so the vibe is quite friendly and happy even though the theme is postapocalyptic Mad Max. The crowd is very mixed and open to all genders and sexualities, as long as it is fetish minded. The whole premise of Wasteland is to take fetish out of the dark corners out in the open, so you’ll have a good mix of people.”
