Crossroads This Week
As we progress further into October, both Park West School Division (PWSD) staff and students are adjusting well, smoothly transitioning into the 2023/24 academic school year.
PWSD enrollment figures indicate a rise for the second year in a row – a bump of 83 full-time students, bringing the total to 2,243 this year compared to 2,160 in 2023.
“Our enrollment this year represents an increase of students from September 2023,” stated PWSD Superintendent Stephen David. “It is consistent with what we expected when we developed our budget in the spring. The
budget was based upon a projection of 2,222, and we realized 2,243 students as of Sept. 30. That date is significant because it is when the official pupil counts are made for funding purposes.”
David added that the overall increase of students suggests a positive trend in enrollment, aligning with the division’s expectations during budget planning.

He explained that several schools experienced significant growth (e.g., Birtle Collegiate and Hamiota Collegiate), while a few saw a decline.
“This variability most likely reflects local demographic trends, specifically families moving in and out of particular school catchment areas,” David said.
The 2023/24 school year in-
cludes 16 schools and learning environments, all compiled within the PWSD umbrella, with a teaching staff accounting for upwards of 170 members. There are three new principals, Rebecca ArdielVoth – Hamiota Collegiate, Kevin Salmi – Hamiota Elementary, and Amber Nerbas – Inglis School.
