SNOWED IN

DARRELL NESBITT/CROSSROADS THIS WEEK

Motorists had to drive carefully through heavy-laden paths of snow and ruts on Russell’s Main Street running through the business section on the afternoon of Thursday, Feb. 6 thanks to the snow accumulation received the night prior in combination with extreme winds, which created massive drifts in and out of town. Conditions left Park West school buses parked once again due to safety concerns, while those who braved the roadways were forced to take things slow and steady.

Three schools within Park West School Division (PWSD), including Miniota, Russell, and Rossburn, are undergoing significant upgrades as part of an ongoing capital support initiative led by the Manitoba Department of Education. These enhancements are aimed at improving facilities and ensuring a safe and modern learning environment for students.

“The Capital Support Program provides funding to School Divisions for major capital projects (new construction and renovations) and on-going capital support programs such as roofing replacements, structural upgrading,

access renovations, portable classrooms, and system replacement,” explained Superintendent Stephen David. “Each year, every School Division must submit a Five-Year Capital Plan to the Public Schools Finance Board outlining priorities for new construction, additions, renovations, access renovations, structural upgrading, and systems replacements.”

With the province fully funding these projects, the division relies on its maintenance supervisor to coordinate between the school division and the provincial government which ensures that projects are correctly prioritized and efficiently executed.

“Once a specific project receives provincial approval, a pro-

vincial representative is assigned as the project manager,” explained David.

Russell’s Major Pratt School completed the replacement of its rooftop unit, with final reconciliation now complete and the financial closing of the project has been approved by the province.
