DARRELL NESBITT/CROSSROADS THIS WEEK

When a cycling partner needs to check the operation of his brakes, patience is required, as was the case with this pair of youngsters spotted heading to school in Shoal Lake on Monday, April 22. Most bicycles were left at home the following day however, as sidewalks were covered in layers of frozen ice and slush as the region was hit with a fair amount of snow, rain, and blustery winds that caused travel hazards once again.

Crossroads This Week

Three individuals from the communities of Minnedosa, Russell, and Shoal Lake have received King Charles III Coronation Medals in recognition of their outstanding contributions to leadership and community service. These prestigious awards were

part of a national initiative that included the distribution of 30,000 medals across Canada, with local recipients selected by Progressive Conservative MLAs from western Manitoba.

LEONARD DERKACH

Leonard Derkach, born in 1945 in Rossburn, is a lifelong farmer and educator. After completing

high school in Russell, he then graduated from Brandon University. His commitment to education led him to teach in local schools while also serving on the Pelly Trail School Board from 1979 to 1985, including three years as chair.

In 1986, Derkach was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Roblin-

Russell constituency, where he served for 25 years. His leadership included key cabinet positions such as Minister of Education and Training, and Minister of Rural Development. After retiring from the legislature in 2011, he served as mayor for the Municipality of Russell-Binscarth from 2015 to 2018.

Derkach’s contributions extend

beyond politics; he actively participates in his local church and values spending time with his family at the lake while supporting his grandchildren’s hockey endeavours. He and his wife, Margaret, are proud parents of three sons and have 11 grandchildren.
