As one of the largest provincial Crown land pastures, ElliceArchie community pasture, near St-Lazare, is among provincial Crown parcels that will see an extended rent freeze for the 2026/27 season. The announcement made by Agriculture Minister Ron Kosty-
shyn on Aug. 26 means that rates on Agricultural Crown Land forage leases will stay frozen at $3.66 per animal unit month through the 2027 growing season. As the lowest Agricultural Crown Land rate in Western Canada, the freeze directly affects all cattle producers leasing Crown pasture in this area. Alongside the rate freeze, the province is also proposing regula-
tory changes to let certain forage leaseholders renew consecutively instead of losing their lease to auction after 15 years. A cap on how much Crown land any single producer or related entity can hold is also proposed. The changes come as producers face pressure from ongoing trade disputes with the United States and a slower-than-average harvest this fall.
As one of the largest blocks of native grassland under the province’s community pasture program, Ellice-Archie community pasture usage, and other similar Crown land leased by producers around the region, continue to lead producers with many continued benefits, specifically providing local producers with access to grazing land they might not otherwise afford, freeing up their own
