DAR R E L L N E SBIT T / CR O SSR O ADS T H IS W E E K Waywayseecappo Wolverines forward Blake Farthing couldn’t stuff the puck past Virden Oil Capitals goaltender Micky Gross as the two teams kicked off the Manitoba Junior Hockey League regular season in Waywayseecappo on Friday, Sept. 18. The Wolverines sent their fans home happy on the night, as they earned a 5-2 win. The Oil Capitals would get at least some revenge the following evening, as they earned a 5-4 shootout victory when the two teams met in Virden.

With National Truth and Reconciliation Day approaching on Sept. 30, communities across the region have been reflecting on a summer that brought former residential school students back to Birtle’s Residential School site.

Ahead of Truth and Reconciliation Day, the Birtle Residential School Reunion took place from Sept. 4 and 5, based in Brandon, with a bus trip out to Birtle on the first day. It brought Survivors, family members and leaders back to the site of a school that operated for 82 years, from 1888 to 1970. One message was consistent

throughout the two days… Survivors do not want to be forgotten. For many, the road back to Birtle has been a long one, with the reunion being the first time they had returned since leaving the Birtle Residential School altogether. The gathering was organized by the Birtle Residential School Survivors’ Committee, managed by Survivors Percy Bal-

lantyne and Charlie Bittern, with support from staff at the Southern Chiefs’ Organization’s Residential School Research Project. Led by Elder Joe Bunn, the reunion ceremony included opening remarks, stories from Survivors and an apology from the Presbyterian Church, with Grand Chief Jerry Daniels speaking about the scale of the trauma

connected to the residential school system. “For 82 years, more than 7,000 children were forced to attend the school,” Grand Chief Daniels said. “They were separated from their parents, grandparents, siblings, nations, languages, ceremonies and way of life.”
