In this chariot heat, Hayden Rooks may have trailed down the backstretch, however, he closed the distance and crossed the finish line in first place, and went on to be the top Chariot driver on Saturday, Sept. 5. Due to excess rain, the racing card on Sunday was cancelled.

Residents in and around Hamiota won’t need to drive to Brandon or beyond for post-secondary training much longer, if a new partnership between the municipality and Assiniboine College delivers on its promise. The Hamiota Economic Devel-
opment Corporation is spearheading the effort locally, working with the college to figure out what kind of courses and training the area actually needs, then bring that programming to a local space instead of asking residents to leave the region for it. A room at the Hamiota Business HUB has been allocated as the future home base for the initiative.
Once running, it will give residents a spot to take Assiniboine College coursework in person or online without leaving Hamiota. However, what’s actually being offered is still an open question. Nobody has finalized a course list yet. That’s on purpose. Organizers are running an online Training Interest Survey first, asking residents what training they’d ac-
tually use before building a program around it. The survey window is short. It closes Sept. 11, and it’s open to residents well beyond Hamiota itself, including Birdtail Sioux First Nation, Prairie View Municipality, Rural Municipality (R.M.) of Oakview, R.M. of Wallace Woodworth and R.M. of Yellowhead. College’s Vice President of Community Development, said the goal is to build something that actually fits the region rather than dropping in a generic program. “At Assiniboine College, we’re committed to making education accessible and responsive to community needs,” Mahon said.
