DAR R E L L N E SBIT T / CR O SSR O ADS T H IS W E E K Horses in this neck of the woods are common, however, these four black beauties stood out amongst the colourful fall leaves just north of Birtle along Highway 83 recently. Small town adventures for travellers are often views from a windshield, and views like this only serve to add to the magic found across our region.

The region is in collective excitement as five arts and recreation projects are sharing $300,750 in provincial funding, with upgrades coming to Binscarth, Birtle, Elkhorn, and Miniota. Municipal and Northern Relations Minister Glen Simard announced the funding Oct. 17
through the From the Ground Up – Safe Healthy Communities for All program. “Strong communities need places where people can come together, stay active, celebrate local culture and build connections,” said Simard. In Binscarth, the Municipality of Russell-Binscarth will receive $40,000 to upgrade the community’s outdoor pool.
Birtle is home to two of the projects. The Birtle Centre for the Arts will receive $100,000 to upgrade and modernize its facility. Prairie View Municipality will put $17,500 toward upgrades at the Birtle arena. The Rural Municipality of Wallace-Woodworth will use $43,250 for a feasibility study for a proposed new community hall and skating rink in Elkhorn.

The Miniota Community Centre will receive $100,000 for new locker and dressing rooms, accessible washrooms, a room for officials and a Zamboni room. “Constructing new locker rooms, washrooms and operational spaces will greatly enhance accessibility and support our growing community,” said Jeff Poppel, chair of the centre’s facilities enhancement board.
Poppel said the funding will help keep the centre a welcoming hub for years to come. The From the Ground Up program offers up to $100,000 to nonprofits, municipalities, and northern affairs community councils. The money supports community revitalization, youth programs and capital improvements for communities.
