THURSDAYS (10:OOAM) : Bible Study in the Assisted Living Activities Room

SUNDAYS (10:OOAM) : Worship Services in the Assisted Living Activities Room

“I have come to believe less and less that biology is destiny.” Dr. Ellen Langer wrote that in her 1979 book, Counterclockwise. She is known for taking a group of old men on a weeklong retreat. They were asked to care for themselves and instructed to pretend that they were 20 years younger, living in 1959.

They talked about the threat of communism, the need for bomb shelters, and Castro’s advance into Havana. By the end of the week, men who could barely walk broke into a game of touch football. Their vision and hearing improved, and their arthritis decreased. Sixtythree percent (63%) scored higher on their intelligence test, and everyone was rated by independent observers as looking younger.

Dr. Langer’s conclusion: “It is not primarily our physical selves that limit us but rather our mind-set about our physical limitations.” One of Crossroads board members just turned 99. Recently, he went cycling with the youth from his church. He works out daily. He is fortunate to have good health. But he’s probably most fortunate to have a positive mind-set. What is your mind-set? It may be a good time to begin pretending we are all 20 years younger.

Update from Maranatha

Want to Volunteer? Each year, Maranatha works with organizations in the United States and Canada to provide volunteer labor for various construction or renovation projects. The Phenix City Church (Alabama) Project, August 28September 11, is one of our many efforts based in North America.

The Phenix City Church is asking Maranatha volunteers to assist with renovations that include removing and installing new flooring, installing new projector screens, extending the platform, painting hallways, and enlarging the media room. Volunteers with experience in carpentry, painting, electrical, and flooring are desired, as well as those who can assist, are greatly needed. Please consider joining us for this project! A New Exercise Routine

You know how important exercise is as we grow older. Here are a few suggestions. Start by standing outside behind your community and, with a five-pound potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out to your sides and hold them there as long as you can.

After a few weeks, move up to 10-pound potato sacks, then 50-pound potato sacks and finally see if you can get to where you can lift a 100-pound potato sack in each hand while holding your arms straight out for more than a full minute!

Finally, start putting a few potatoes IN the sacks. But be warned, do not overdo it.
