Alzheimer’s Walk

Stopping Alzheimer’s is a goal worth striving for. You can be part of the solution to Alzheimer’s. Join Crossroads at Delta on the Montrose, Olathe, and Delta Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, August 26, 2023, starting at the Montrose Rotary Park.

Alzheimer’s is a progressive and fatal disease. It devastates our families, our finances, and our future. As the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support, and research, the Alzheimer’s Association® addresses this global crisis by providing education and support to the millions who face dementia every day, while advancing critical research toward methods of treatment, prevention, and, ultimately, a cure.

Crossroads at Delta Memory Care is sponsoring this year’s walk, held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide. It is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. Participants of all ages and abilities are invited to join the fight against the disease. Update from Maranatha

FAMILIES DOING GREAT THINGS

Each year, Maranatha Volunteers offers at least two projects specifically for families of all kinds, usually in the summer and over the Christmas holiday. One of these mission trips recently wrapped up in the Dominican Republic with 92 volunteers serving near the capital city of Santo Domingo. Each day, two groups worked in construction at separate sites, in extreme heat and humidity, laying block walls at three different churches. Another volunteer team provided medical clinics in the community, seeing around 200 patients each day. Others led Vacation Bible School (VBS) programs for community children, and health education in various neighborhoods.

Maranatha’s Family Projects are unique in that children enjoy a day camp that includes light supervised construction, local culture, and outreach activities throughout the mission trip. And, of course, they had fun by visiting a chocolate factory, a cave with three lakes, a zoo, a water park, and a park at the beach.

“It was very satisfying to watch the kids do these things for other people, not complaining about the heat,” said day camp coordinator Chris Duckett. “You could see they weren’t afraid to make friends, step out of their comfort zone, and do their best to speak some Spanish.” To learn more, scan this code, go to www.maranatha.org or visit the Maranatha channel.

Exercises for Seniors

You know how important exercise is, as we grow older. Here are a few suggestions.

I start by standing outside behind the house and, with a five-pound potato sack in each hand, extend my arms straight out to my sides and hold them there as long as I can.

After a few weeks, I moved up to 10-pound potato sacks, then 50-pound potato sacks and finally I got to where I could lift a 100-pound potato sack in each hand and hold my arms straight out for more than a full minute!

Next, I started putting a few potatoes IN the sacks, but I would caution you not to overdo it at this level.
