Red Iron’s Corner I spend a lot of time visiting our office locations and job sites.

One of the best parts of my job is getting to interact with everyone throughout the organization.

Every office and every job site is unique, but one thing that I consistently come across is the competitive nature of our people. From the bragging rights of our Company Retreat to the pride that comes from having the largest project, most extensive concrete pour, biggest precast set, or tallest building erected - at Crossland, competition is a fun and welcomed challenge.

I enjoy seeing and experiencing our people living the company’s core values (Trust, Responsibility, Integrity, Passion), which I believe have been the source of our competitive culture. Established by our late founder, Ivan Crossland Sr., these simple but powerful four values have continually shaped our culture over the years. A competitive drive, coupled with our company’s humble beginnings, continuously fuels our employees.

It’s this drive that pushes our teams to go above and beyond for our clients. They put their hearts into the communities they serve and never give up. Our leadership in the field and the office always strive to be better. It’s incredible to see their hard work pay off and recognized amongst their peers and our competitors for the projects they’ve completed.

We dedicated this issue of the Red Iron to celebrating our competitive drive and award-winning spirit. Our featured project is the Gathering Place in Tulsa, Oklahoma. This project has received local, regional, and national awards on several global platforms, and it’s an excellent representation of our company’s competitive drive and commitment to client satisfaction.

Nature is an inspiring work of art – wind blowing through the trees, birds singing, the glistening ripples of the lake, and the radiant glow of the sun setting over the water. When building in a location as beautiful as Lake Bentonville, the structure must also be a work of art. The Thaden Fieldhouse project located on Lake Bentonville at the Bentonville Municipal Airport is a destination worth visiting.

We are proud to have been a part of this unique project. It features a two-story multi-use building that houses Summit Aviation’s FBO Office, Exhibit Hangar, Café Louise, FAAapproved Flight School, and OZ1 Flying Club.

Café Louise is a restaurant that seats 175 patrons who can dine either inside or on the outdoor patio. Guests can canoe, kayak, or fish from the boardwalk that extends into the lake.

KANSAS CITY, KANSAS As a family-owned company, we take pride in maintaining that family feel, even after growing to 1,500 plus employees. That’s why getting to work with other family-owned companies, like the Geiger Family, always feels so special. The Geiger Family has been part of the pulse of the Kansas City area construction industry dating back to the 1860s. In 1976 the company’s roots spread even further when Geiger’s opened a cement batch plant in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Ready-Mix plant was outdoors, exposing it to weather conditions that affect the region. Crossland was selected to improve plant efficiency by enclosing the existing batch plant without interfering with the daily operations.

Finding Solutions This project presented several challenges, but our teams are no strangers to thinking outside the box. The unique shape and height of the structure presented an obstacle along with constructing the building over the top of an existing concrete batch plant. Our crews assembled as many pieces as possible at ground level before hoisting them into place. Erection crews followed suit, and erected the roof structure in finished “pods”. These methods minimized the need for workers to be exposed to dangerous heights and reduced the potential for dropping tools and other materials below.

“We did a pavement design specifically for the area,” Morgan said. “It’s right on the banks of the Arkansas River, so it’s really sandy. Previously there were a lot of groundwater problems, so we went all the way down, pulled everything out. We took a cautious approach to make sure we were providing 100-year protection for the street. The pavement was in terrible shape. It had to be completely reconstructed. Now it’s an incredible road and looks great.”

The War Eagle Bridge, located in War Eagle, Arkansas, was built in 1907 and serves as a landmark on the National Historic Registry. Resting adjacent to the War Eagle Mill, built in 1832, the two structures create a beautiful, historic setting for people to enjoy year-round. Some 120,000 people visit the area for a well-known bi-annual craft fair.

CREWS HELP OUT KANSAS CITY HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE CARE This spring, Kansas City Hospice, and Palliative Care recognized the need for sidewalks to enhance accessibility at their four locations. Our Kansas City division partnered with our friends at Geiger Ready Mix to complete the project.

LOCAL EMPLOYEES HELP OUT HIGHLAND ELEMENTARY Over the summer, several of our local employees replaced the playground equipment at Highland Elementary School in Columbus, Kansas. The original playground equipment was old, made out of wood, and ready for an update. It was a very wet summer, but the construction couldn’t wait. Our crews muddied up their boots and got to work. We completed the project before the beginning of the school year.

Our theme this week was engineering, so we discussed Crossland Construction in many aspects. Mainly in how the whole Crossland team works together to make big dreams become realities. TULSA LEVEE FIX SAVES THOUSANDS FROM EVACUATION In May of 2019, the Arkansas River floodwaters were pushing levees to capacity in Tulsa, Oklahoma, causing the City to issue a State-of-Emergency. When we received the call from the City of Tulsa that floodwaters could compromise the levee, we knew we had to help. Our team got to the site immediately to assess the problem. The waters had reduced the levee to a width of two feet. Our crews worked around the clock to construct a new levee that would withstand the rising waters.

Stepping in helped save thousands from evacuating their homes and businesses, and we were overwhelmed with the community gratitude. We are proud to be a part of the Tulsa community and to help serve in any capacity we can.
