Invisible Fire***

Traditional Themes in Western Mysticism and Sethian Gnosticism

Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold

Invisible Fire by Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold strives to present concepts in metaphysical exploration in an engaging and digestible way. Solidly anchored in history, philosophy, and metaphysics, de Mattos Frisvold’s work engages the reader with its Gnostic vision of rediscovering one’s own cosmic center, the anima mundi. Invisible Fire presents traditional themes in Western Mysticism, a cultural conglomerate of shared cosmologies and epistemologies. In this enlightening work, de Mattos Frisvold compares Sufi schools, schools of Kabbalah, Christian Mystics, Gnostics, and even Eastern traditions as bound by similar cosmologies. This book introduces the reader to the practices of the Timeless Tradition, the Way of Seth, and more.

The Cunning Craft A Tortuous Path of the Wise Art by Nicholaj de Mattos Frisvold

The Tameless Path*** Unleashing the Power of Invasive Plants in Witchcraft

The Tameless Path sheds light on our under-appreciated plant allies and makes the introduction between weeds and witches. From the resurrective and divinatory properties of Acacia and Velvetweed’s soothing remedies to the chaotic strength of Ivy, Kamden Cornell invites you to build a new relationship with the Land itself. A stunning compendium of recipes, rituals, and folkloric and ecological knowledge, this book is the gateway to creating resilient communities between ourselves and our fellow misfits on the fringe, forging a better understanding and healing care for the environments and spirits around us.

Reviews:

“An eye-opening look into the world of “invasive plants,” The Tameless Path brings much needed focus on plants that are typically regarded as unwanted and noxious “weeds.” Cornell takes the time to get to know each of these resilient, powerful, and healing allies on an individual basis, sharing a trove of information regarding each plant’s medicinal and magical properties. Incorporating green witchcraft, alchemy, and plant spirit work this book provides the reader with tools for working with these plants, providing medicinal, culinary, and occult formulas, instilling in the reader that no plant is “bad” or “harmful” and that even the forgotten plants of the wayside have their own unique magic to share with us.”

“The Tameless Path by Kamden Cornell is a heartfelt and intentional approach to magical herbalism when encountering invasive plants. This book is a great resource for those who are interested in invasive plants for food, medicine, and magic. I really enjoyed the unique recipes, they were given with detailed instructions for use. The author focuses on not only magical applications, but wild foraging recipes for food and also helpful recommendations for medicinal purposes.”

- Corinne Boyer, author of Drean Divination Plants: In Northwestern European Traditions

About the Author

An apothecarist and wortcunner, Kamden S. Cornell has an avid love for plants of all kinds. As a bio-regional animist and folk witch, they specialize in using the plants around them for their herbal and magical craft. The outsider perspective is important to them, as they are non-binary, gay, and queer, and they are deeply drawn to invasive species, which have been much maligned and persecuted.

The Tameless Path:

Kamden also teaches classes on foraging, survival, and field herbalism in the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque, NM, as well as classes on tarot, alchemy, and witchcraft practices.

They own a small, witchcraft-based business called Heart &Vine Apothecary that focuses on herbal remedies and ritual goods. They are the author of two self-published works: Ars Granorum: The Six Seed Arts of Witchcraft and On Needles and Pins: A Witches’ Book of Poppetry and Figure Magic . They are also a regular columnist for Noumenia News, the periodical publication released by The Covenant of Hekate.

Q&A with Kamden Cornell

Q: Let’s help our readers get to know you a bit better! Can you tell us about yourself, your background, and your magical practice?

A: I’m Kami (he/they) and I’m a witch, wortcunner, and esotericism enthusiast from Albuquerque, NM. I work as an apothecarist at a shop called Old Town Herbal, which operates out of the oldest operating neighborhood in the US. I also have my own witchcraft business, Heart & Vine Apothecary, that sells magical items and tarot readings, and offers classes on herbalism, foraging & plant ID, tarot, alchemy, energy work, spirit work, and witchcraft.

I was lucky enough to grow up with magic and the occult as major aspects of my life. My grandfather was an alchemist, astrologer, and Qabalist who had an extensive occult and metaphysical library that I read voraciously from. My grandmother did cartomancy and energy healing and taught classes on meditation, Astral projection, psychic development, aura reading, and New Age concepts. I don’t agree with everything I was taught as a child, but it all gave me a pretty good head start when I decided to study witchcraft in the 90s. Since then, the path to my practice as it stands now has been pretty circuitous, ebbing and flowing as my worldview has developed.

Authors like Gemma Gary, Lee Morgan, Aaron Oberon, and Sorita d’Este, as well as the invaluable teachings of my personal mentors, have been instrumental in how my personal practice looks now. It is a blend of methods inspired by traditional and folkloric witchcraft, Hekatean devotion, mythology, spirit work, divination, esoteric and occult philosophy, and my personal understanding of Qabalah, all with a strong backbone of wortcunning. Invasives are a strong part of my practice, too, as I am bio-regionally and animalistically minded, so I try to work with the plants that grow and thrive around me, which happen to include a whole lot of “weeds”!

Q: You own an occult shop, right? Tell us about that and what inspired you to open it?

A: Well, I own a pop-up shop, so not a brick and mortar location, which is how I like it! I usually set up at the largest local farmers’ market, the Rail Yards Market ABQ, which takes place on Sundays in a building constructed in 1917 as a blacksmith’s shop for the Santa Fe Railway. I also have an online shop, heartandvineapothecary.com. You can find all of my offerings there.

I was inspired to open my shop as a side hustle, just selling a few salves and oils as a way to support my massage and energy work practice, but it has become a full time business of its own. As I learned new methods and magics and as people made special requests, I started making new things, and now I sell all sorts of magical and ritual oils, smoke blends, salves, inks, lotions, perfumes, ritual tools and goods, and jewelry, all of which is made by hand. I’m integrating more invasives in my work and am working on making my product almost entirely from them, which is a very fun process!

Q: Tell us a bit more about your book, The Tameless Path It’s such a fun concept and not one that you see talked about often. What was your inspiration for it?

A: The Tameless Path is my love letter to the unloved, unwanted, and misunderstood plants that are actively and viciously maligned. I wanted to argue for their value and worth, and present information that might help people to see that they are not bad or vile, but rather potential friends and allies. I chose some of the plants I’ve heard the most vitriol about, the ones people just can not stand, and tried to bring attention to their beauty and usefulness. Invasives are here to stay, so we might as well learn how to get along. They’re everywhere, readily available, and free to the savvy witch!

What inspired my initial love of them was the teaching of my mentor, Bernadette. She said, “the medicine you 1 2

need grows by your front door,” and what was by my door at the time was London rocket (Sisymbium irio), an invasive mustard. I was dealing with digestion issues and coming through an eating disorder, and, after some research, I discovered that London rocket is great for digestion and increasing appetite, so I started eating and making herbal remedies with it. The teaching proved itself and I was hooked! I wanted to get to know all the other plants growing around me, out of cracks in the sidewalks and down alleyways, most of which were invasives. In my research, I quickly learned how important these plants were, and this book is one of the ways I’ve tried to make that increasingly apparent to more people.

4

Q: Can you tell us a bit about your writing process? There are so many fun spells, formulas, and recipes in this book it must have taken ages to do all the research for!

A: The best phrase to describe my process is “focused chaos.” When I’m writing, there are mountains of books and articles, papers everywhere, crafting projects strewn across the house, dishes from recipe experiments, and me in the middle of it all, furiously looking at a computer screen and trying to weave all the parts together. I try to think things through very carefully and look at things from multiple angles before settling into an idea, but that requires writing and rewriting the same paragraph many, many times until I feel like I get the nuance I want. I’m very thankful to my editor, Cole, who so expertly helped me clarify my voice!

The research for this book has been done over several years, long before I thought about writing a book on the topic, so a lot of the research I did was to better understand my thoughts on the subject, develop some nuance for the arguments, and really expand my experience with the plants I chose. Making new recipes based on tried and true practice and experimentation, trying new things just for the heck of it, getting to know myself and these herbs better, and really just having a good time with old friends characterized the creation of this book. It was an arduous, joyous, and extremely fun process that I hope shines through in the content of The Tameless Path

look to see if there is any folklore about it, find out if you can eat it and how to do so safely, and really begin to make a friendship with the plant. Talk to the plants, too—have full conversations with them all the time, and remember you’re working with a sentient, living being that can teach you about how it would like to work with you.

Alternatively, if you’re uncomfortable with the idea of working with invasives and don’t like them much, start learning about one you really hate, one that makes you angry. Sometimes, learning about the things we have a strong dislike for helps us understand them better, giving us a more nuanced perspective and opening a much wider vista of possibilities—not only about the subject at hand, but for our multiple aspects of our lives. Let the monster you see in the plant help you to recognize the monster in you, and maybe the world will be a better place in the end.

6 7 5

Q: What advice do you have for the novice Witch looking to start working with the power of invasive plants?

A: Honestly, the best way is to approach one that strikes your fancy and get to know it! Once you’ve identified it and know what you’re working with, read about it extensively,

Q: What do you hope readers will get out of both reading and working through the magic in your book?

A: My dearest hope is that people who give themselves the opportunity to work and deeply engage with these plants will see that they are not villains, but exactly the friends and kin we’ve been looking for. I also hope that readers can find a new and deeper sense of understanding with the earth and the Green, one where we can follow in Her path and really hear Her saying, “this is what I need; what we need.” I chose the title of the last chapter of the book to reflect this sentiment: “May all your weeds be wildflowers.”

I also hope that people will let the plant take the lead and get really creative, let their imaginations and intuitions free, and just make magic! I firmly believe that magic is an action, so get your hands dirty, try things out, let yourself fail and try something else. Get to know these plants with all of your senses and learn how you best work together. Take the work seriously and do it in earnest, but let yourself have an enormous amount of fun, too!

Q: Where can readers find you? How can they get in touch?

A: Y’all can find me at heartandvineapothecary.com and on Instagram at @heart_n_vine_apothecary. Please feel free to reach out!

In Memoriam:

Crossed Crow Books would like to take a moment to honor the life and writing of Gordon Strong (1948-2023).

Gordon Strong was a writer, speaker, and workshop host. He was well-known in the United Kingdom and the West Coast of the United States. He published several books on myths, magic, sacred monuments, and numerous novels. Music, laughter with friends, and walking were his other pursuits. He resided in Somerset up until his passing.

In Gordon’s words:

“When I write about metaphysics I’m bringing in quantum, neurology, cosmology and philosophy simply because they are part of the picture. I’m a believer in balancing reason and the intuition so as to get the best out of both qualities. In my fiction I’m upholding the traditional virtues of nobility and respect and above all, love. I champion the individual against the corporate mindless monster, very much a theme of our times. I’m not a cynic, but I’m not so much of a romantic either that I drift off into Fluffyland. I’m funny too, humour is part of awareness.”

The Craft of Tubal Cain

Traditional Witchcraft and the Legacy of Robert Cochrane by Kenneth Johnson

During the chaotic but colorful 1960s, witchcraft was reborn as a modern mystical practice. Many are familiar with Wicca, founded by Gerald Gardner, but there was a countercurrent, now known as Traditional Witchcraft, which saw the art from a very different angle. Its chief thinker was Robert Cochrane, who envisioned witchcraft as a gnostic quest for ultimate knowledge and union with the divine. This volume explores his most important ideas, especially the way in which he re-envisioned ancient mythology, putting a new spin on old deities as well as on folkloric figures like Robin Hood and King Arthur and naming Tubal Cain, whom the Bible calls the first blacksmith, as his avatar of knowledge both sacred and profane. Though he wrote very little and died young, Cochrane left enough material behind for us to reconstruct the steps by which he urged each aspiring witch to take a crooked path to complete gnosis.

Lessons from the Liminal Space Oracle

46 Card Oracle Deck and Guidebook by

In Lessons from the Liminal Space, Rosśa Crean provides a mindful perspective to those who are searching for clarity through the difficult transitions in life. The cards present the perspectives of self-allowance, resting, and remaining open to processing the inevitable discomforts that arise from the changes we face throughout life.

An award-winning artist and composer, Rosśa uses their synesthesia to create internationally-exhibited abstract paintings that reflect their own healing journey through trauma and abuse that lead them to their life path as a trauma specialist, life coach, and healer. These paintings, together with the lessons that Rosśa has learned through years of work with their own clients, allow users to reflect on these lessons through the expansive visual worlds that they have presented in this oracle deck.

While the messages of the cards are stated clearly, Rosśa encourages users to let themselves further explore the visual work presented, to let parts of the psyche come forward and speak to us. Rosśa says, “it is in these liminal spaces where we can ignite the process of what whole integration means, to amalgamate our Shadow and public persona in order to understand and manage our impulses and behavioral responses.” That purpose alone is what makes this a great supplementary tool for any person’s Shadow Work.

This kit contains a 46-card oracle deck and 60-page guidebook packed with rituals and other workings to help you connect with these cards.

A Gothic Witch’s Oracle 40 Card Deck & Guidebook

Reviews:

“Oh, what wondrous delights are within this deck. A collaboration between Raven Digitalis and John Santerineross was always in the cards, surely. Raven Digitalis’ intuitive writings weave a dark, insightful spell when combined with the delicious chiaroscuro of John Santerineross’ photography, giving dark Witches the perfect divining aid…. If ever there was an essential tool for the Gothic Witch to have in their arsenal, this is it.”

- Candia McKormack, of Inkubus Sukkubus

“Fascinating and insightful, this wonderful collaborative work breaks free from the traditional tarot system and embraces a contemporary, and in many ways more culturally relevant interpretation. This darkly beautiful work should in many ways be relevant to not only Goths, Pagans, occultists, and Witches, but also anyone on a voyage of self-discovery….This deck will prove invaluable for for anyone not afraid to occasionally gaze into the abyss.”

The Avian Oracle 47 Card Deck & Guidebook

The Avian Oracle brings the reader into the world of birds, their uniqueness and the special affinity humans have with them. For thousands of years, birds have epitomized freedom and served as a symbol of the soul. Because they have been associated with some of the most powerful deities and sometimes represented the Divine, it is no surprise that they touch the soul and bring meaning to people’s lives. The book provides background material for understanding the long, historical association humans have with birds. Regarded as messengers of gods and goddesses, birds were believed to provide information about everyday matters through the ancient art of ornithomancy and many forms of divination. Greek and Roman army generals, rules, and ordinary fishermen alike were guided by birds, who helped in many aspects of life. From the Druids, the Anglo-Saxons, and Germanic tribes of Northern Europe, to medieval Christian theologians and Jewish Mystics, birds were an integral part of beliefs and practices. Working with The Avian Oracle aids in uniting the personal with the mystical and magical, the mundane with the sacred.

To Catch a Fleeting Shadow

A Witch’s Guide to Fetch Work

The Witch’s fetch is the etheric, spirit helper often found to manifest within the framework of old Witch lore. Despite its popularity in myth, however, very little has actually been written about actively working with one’s fetch in magical practice. To Catch a Fleeting Shadow: A Witch’s Guide to Fetch Work seeks to bridge the gap between myth and lore and authentic magical practice. Part One of this book explores the mythological and folkloric origins of the fetch, while Part Two presents a completely new grimoire of active and intense magical practice designed to help you weave a web of magic in complete partnership with your fetch.

Through a blend of history, folklore, and personal narrative, To Catch a Fleeting Shadow reveals the art of forging an intimate and fulfilling bond with one’s fetch, a relationship built on mutual respect, empowerment, and the sharing of ancient knowledge. Accessible enough to help those Witches just starting on their path, but serious enough to cater to the more seasoned practitioner, To Catch a Fleeting Shadow: A Witch’s Guide to Fetch Work will prove to be a fantastic and engaging resource.

The Confessions of Fiona Mythology and Folklore of the Faeries

by

For twelve years, beginning in 1892, the Scottish writer and mystic William Sharp wrote under the name Fiona McLeod. Fiona wrote profusely of her own tradition: the mythology and deities that the Faeries recognise. Steve Blamires presents these concepts in The Confessions of Fiona. He has studied this esoteric Faery Tradition for thirty years and presents the whole unique ritual system, including previously unknown myths, legends, and gods and goddesses, and offers them to the modern researcher. Woven into the legends that the Faeries share with each other is a whole ritual magical tradition that can be emulated by humans with a basic knowledge of the Western Magical Tradition, the Four Festivals, the Four Magical Tools, and what has come to be known as Pathworking.
