A Witch’s Guide to Fetch Work seeks to bridge the gap between myth and lore and authentic magical practice. Through a blend of history, folklore and personal narrative, A Witch’s Guide to Fetch Work reveals the art of forging an intimate and fulfilling bond with one’s fetch, a relationship built on mutual respect, empowerment, and the sharing of ancient knowledge.

Hallowed Ground***

The Folklore of Churches and Churchyards

Hallowed Ground: The Folklore of Churches and Churchyards examines the surprising traditions, customs, superstitions and secular imagery found in Christian churches and churchyards, with a particular emphasis on the traditional rural protestant church. Beginning with stories associated with the construction of church buildings themselves and the role that they played in the community, the book moves through a number of subjects where everything might not be as it would seem it should be in the Christian church and its grounds. Expect vestiges of pagan symbols hidden in the fabric of the church building and clergymen rumored to hold strange arcane knowledge of their own, kept within their personal occult libraries. Learn the ways in which you can use the church and its grounds to divine who might die in the next twelve months, where you might find love and how you might cure illnesses. Watch out for a number of figures who you shouldn’t expect to find on such holy ground, from run-ins with the Devil to spectral figures inhabiting the church or its graves. Discover some of the ways in which magic and witchcraft seep into the hallowed ground of the churchyard from outside. Hallowed Ground will offer more than a few surprises about the folklore that surrounds the church and its churchyard and a fascinating insight into the social history that surrounds our place of traditional Sunday worship, all delivered with the academic rigor and accessible, engaging style for which the author is known.

About the Author:

Mark Norman is a folklorist and author based in Devon, in the South West of the UK. He is the curator of the Folklore Library and Archive, a council member of the Folklore Society, and the creator and host of The Folklore Podcast. Ranked in the top half percent of podcasts in its genre around the world and with around two million downloads behind it, The Folklore Podcast is recognized as one of the leading shows in the field of folklore today.

An Interview with Mark Norman

Q.1 Can you tell us about yourself and your background?

I’m a folklorist and author living in the South West of the United Kingdom, in the middle of the county of Devon. Most people probably know me publicly as the creator and host of The Folklore Podcast, which has been running continuously since 2015 and is one of the most listened to and respected podcasts in its genre (apparently) with over 2 million downloads and a ranking within the top 0.5% of podcasts globally for its genre.

I have authored a number of books for traditional publishers in the UK, all of which are available globally, but Hallowed Ground is the first book that I have written under contract for an American publisher, and I’m delighted to be working with Crossed Crow for this title.

I am a council member for The Folklore Society, the UK’s oldest established learned society for folklore study and the Recorder of Folklore for the Devonshire Association. I founded and now look after The Folklore Library and Archive, a British charity dedicated to the preservation and archiving of folklore materials and I teach adult education folklore courses online for Learn for Pleasure, which anyone can sign up for.

Q.2 What inspired you to write Hallowed Ground?

A couple of years back I got to know Blake, the President of Crossed Crow books, who it turns out had been listening to my podcast for a while and who knew about my other work. He was keen to work with me and by good fortune was visiting the UK not a million miles from where I live and we took the opportunity to meet in person over coffee.

The result of that meeting has been an increasingly productive working relationship in which I offered to write Hallowed Ground , which was a subject which Blake was keen to have covered. I am also contracted to write another book for Crossed Crow (which has not yet been announced) and at the end of our meeting there were a number of ideas for future projects, so I am hopeful that you will be seeing more of me in the future via Crossed Crow.

Q.3 Can you tell us a bit about your writing process? What goes into the research for folklore-based books?

Writing my books has always been a pretty organic process, to be honest, and the way I go about it usually depends on the structure of the book and the types of research that I need to do. I will usually map out a chapter structure in advance, often with key points that I want to hit in those chapters. I’ll use this to investigate and write on each of these subjects, often starting with books and articles on the subject to pull out key points.

After this, I tend to use a rabbit hole technique where, as I am researching and writing up one point I get diverted along several different tangential paths which then also get incorporated. I’m quite fortunate (usually) that as I am writing my brain is looking ahead and slotting in other points so I tend to usually produce a logical flow without needing to try too hard, although like everyone I’ll hit blocks that need to be overcome.

Q.4 What do you hope readers will get out of both reading and working through the content of your book?

I hope that readers will learn a lot, and be entertained at the same time. I have been told that I have developed a reputation over the years for my writing being academically rigorous and yet accessible. I don’t write academic works but I do aim for this approach, so that people learn a lot from reading my books. At the same time I write with a very particular voice which tries to be casual, engaging and humorous. I hope I achieve this. Expect bad jokes but good folklore!

Q.5 Where can readers find you? How can they get in touch?

Readers can find me easily through The Folklore Podcast or through its various social media accounts. www.thefolklorepodcast.com

Soil Sorcery and the Materia Magica of Varied Dirts

Myths of creation across the globe tell tales of how the first humans were crafted by the gods from dirt, dust, mud, or clay. From the earth we are shaped by the hands of Khnum, the Kemetic patron of sculptors. In Yoruban origin tales it is the orisha Obatala who sculpts the features of each person and breathes life into them. The titan Prometheus takes this role in Greek mythology. And in the Book of Genesis the Abrahamic god creates the first man (Adam אָדָם) from the earth (Adamah אדמה) he is named after. All organic beings are reliant upon the earth, arise from it, are sustained by it, and will eventually return to it. Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

The earth provides us with valuable minerals and gems and is essential to the water cycle. Soil offers a matrix and nutrients for green and growing botanicals, and creates an ecosystem for a diversity of mycelium, microorganisms, and other creatures. It also stands as a reservoir of deep magic and an aid in spirit conjuration. The earth holds a memory of all that interacts with it.

With this in mind, as witches, sorcerers, and magicians it serves us to explore the myriad of ways that we might employ earth, soil and dirts in our magical craft. Dirts are generally an easily collected, bountiful, accessible, and incredibly effective materia that we can employ in a vast number of magical operations. Dirts may be easily incorporated into magical formulas like oils and powders. They may be worked into clay and wax for the crafting of amulets, talismans, and effigies, and they may be incorporated into fetiches, conjure bags, and spirit vessels.

While the use of dirts in magic does appear to greater or lesser degrees across varied magical traditions, much of the dirt magic seen in the modern craft finds its beginnings in living diasporic traditions with West African origins, with notable examples including the traditions of Hoodoo, Quimbanda, and Palo. The African roots of the practice are often overlooked in discussions of this art, but due to its growing popularity within certain circles of contemporary witchcraft we must pause to give acknowledgement to these origins.

On Collecting Dirts

I find it is most effective to approach dirt magic, as I do most things, with an animist’s eye: an understanding that we live in community with a world full of spirits both incarnate and otherwise. The spirits of the land and the soil itself maintain a signature, a memory of what has occurred there before, regardless of whether it was a moment ago or in centuries past. It is through conjuring and calling upon the spirits tied to this conscious earth that we might awaken them to attention and employ their aid as allies in our magical endeavors.

This animist approach to working with dirts begins with our technique of collecting them. When I go out into the world to collect magical materia I carry a satchel with me in which I have a trowel, plastic bags, a permanent marker for labeling bags, tools for divination, and items for spirit offerings. Offerings can take many forms, but I find that carrying coins, tobacco, whisky, and fresh water tends to serve well for most spirits I encounter. I will also carry a wind instrument, usually an ocarina, flute, or a whistle made from elder wood, which I often play as a form of breath and song offering to spirits. In my own work I have generally had very positive responses from land spirits with one or more of the offerings listed above.

When I go into a place which has a power or spirit which may be of benefit in my magical works, I will often audibly announce my presence and intention to partner with the spirits of the place, and then take a moment to sit and briefly slip into the otherworld via meditative or spirit flight techniques. From here I attempt to connect with the spirits of that place, particularly its guardian, or what is commonly referred to by some in contemporary traditional craft as the Genius Loci.

Through this announcement of intention I am seeking to build rapport and give respect to the local spirits, as well as gain permission to take some of the dirt from this place–and by extension a bit of the power from, and a connection to, that land. I might also seek insight from local spirits into

any particular ways that the soil from that land may best be worked with. I also aim to determine what offerings, if any, the spirits of that place request in return for their aid. For those who are not experienced or skilled in spirit flight, you can always work with methods of divination to communicate with spirits of the land. In such cases I find that divination techniques which provide straightforward yes/no/maybe type of answers tend to be best suited for communication.

To be given guidance from a spirit, agree upon offerings, and be granted permission, is to form a pact with the spirit of that place. This is a simple transactional pact which may be a one time interaction with that spirit, or it may grow into an ongoing relationship with that spirit, should you both desire it. Bear in mind that you always have agency in such things. If a spirit asks for too much in the way of offerings, or they seem uninterested or antagonistic towards your presence and request, you are more than within your rights to walk away from the exchange.

Once I feel that permission has been granted and a pact made, I will leave any agreed upon offerings. This might be a bit of tobacco crumbled and sprinkled upon the earth. Offerings may also take the form of some coins being buried, or fresh water or whisky poured upon the land and accompanied by prayer. In some cases the spirit might request that I spend some time tending to the land and removing litter from the place.

I will then use my trowel to dig up the amount of dirt I require. Often this is one hefty scoop of earth. In some cases, such as times when I’m building a spirit pot, I may require more. The dirt is then put into a ziplock bag which is labeled with the date and location. If the soil contains moisture, upon returning home the dirt may be transferred to a paper bag for a while so that it can dry out. If the dried dirt isn’t to be used immediately, I will store a glass jar which has the soil location and date of gathering recorded on its label.

When working these dirts in my magic I will take whatever portion of the dirt I intend to use in my working, maybe a magical powder or fetiche, and hold it in my hand or place it in a bowl and call aloud to the spirit of that place again to inform it of the work I am doing, ask for its aid, and remind it of the pact made when gathering the dirt. This is a minor form of conjuring. Here we are awakening the attention of the spirit/s of the soil, and aligning the spirit of the materia to our purposes. In doing so we are adding some of the power, influence, and virtues of that land and the aid of its spirits to our work.

On the Diversity of Dirts

Once you begin to think about dirts as a link to the power, history, and spirits of a place, creativity sets in and industrious witches will find appropriate locations to gather dirts for any and all purposes.

One such approach is to gather dirts from locations which radiate planetary virtues. In this case it is most appropriate to gather the dirts during the associated planetary day and hour and to also call upon the aid of any deities or spirits which you associate with those planets in your craft.

Though this is not a definitive list, some examples of locations that dirts might be gathered for the seven classical planets of antiquity include:

Saturn: Graveyards and funeral homes, boundaries and fences, prisons, monuments, courthouses, and libraries.

Jupiter: Political Institutions, mountains, banks, places struck by lightning, religious institutions.

Mars: Gymnasiums, sports arenas, battlegrounds and army bases, police stations.

Sun: Your home, theaters, palaces, magnificent places associated with fame and influence.

Venus: Beauty salons and spas, gardens and orchards, bathhouses and brothels, art galleries.

Mercury: Airports and train stations, crossroads, casinos, markets and shopping malls

The Moon: Rivers, lakes, the seashore, fountains, highways, and wooded places

Event-based dirts are those gathered from places where a real or mythological historical event occurred, or where events are currently occurring. Examples of historical dirts include those mindfully collected from sites of ancient temples, or where historical battles occurred. These would then be allied to the spirits and history of devotion to the gods of those temples, or to the violence, triumph, and turmoils of war found on the battlefield.

Remembering that our craft is often a mythopoetic one which finds great power undulating between the twin serpents of the historical and the mythological, we should treat the places of myth with equal consideration. For instance, when creating formulas meant to call upon the witches’ devil I have included dirt from Dimmuborgir. This location in Iceland is one of the terrestrial places where the devil was said to have landed when he was cast down from heaven.

Any places of business, or locations where people gather for a purpose, carry the virtues of and call upon the diverse spir-

its associated with the activities which happen there. Casinos are an excellent place to gather dirts for working luck magic. Dirt gathered from event halls and nightclubs can be worked effectively for works of community and reverie. Those gathered from prestigious universities may be worked with to aid in study and knowledge retention.

Dirt from the crossroads may be worked with for magic associated with travel, communication, and commerce. It is also excellent for connecting with and calling upon the myriad of spirits related to chance, catalyst, and chaos often associated with the crossroad throughout various cultures. That said, the type of crossroad will have an impact upon the spirits present. A cemetery crossroad is quite different in the kind of communication and virtues it offers than that gathered from a woodland crossroad, or a busy urban center.

We may also gather dirts to exert influence upon a person or place for good or ill. This kind of work might look like gathering dirt from the four corners of your property, to which can be added protective herbs, stones, and other materia, with the whole crafted into a spirit vessel which is worked in conjunction with the Genius Loci for protecting your home. Similarly, gathering dirt from your place of employment might serve in works of drawing business or securing a promotion. Dirts gathered from another person’s home, or carefully gathered dirt from their footprint may be used to influence them for blessing or bane.

Though it takes us into realms of spirit work which are more involved and advanced than this humble exploration into dirt magics can delve, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of the most commonly referenced dirts throughout magic: graveyard dirt.

In cases where general graveyard dirt may be desired for necromantic, banishing, or crossing work it is not uncommon for dirts to be gathered from the cemetery gates, or a cemetery crossroad as previously mentioned. That said, when gathering grave dirts as opposed to graveyard dirt, it is more about working with the spirit of the person to whom the grave belongs. This type of work in the realm of the dead requires a fairly solid foundation in spirit communication, conjuration, and pacting. To work with grave dirt safely and effectively also requires knowledge on best practices for spiritual hygiene, protections, and banishings, so it is not recommended for those just beginning in spirit work and dirt magics.

The image of a cabinet stocked to the brim with exotic botanical, mineralogical, or animal materia is one often associated with the witch. However, we tend to overlook the readily available and powerful material which lies beneath

our feet. I encourage those inclined towards working with land spirits who aren’t afraid of getting their hands dirty to incorporate more soil sorcery into their repertoire and explore the fertile ground provided by working with dirts within their craft.

Abramelin Lunar Ordeal

An Alternative Magical Journey by

For ritual practitioners seeking to experience new paths, Frater Barrabbas presents a new paradigm in Abramelin Lunar Ordeal. Born from The Book of Abramelin by MacGregor Mathers, the original ordeal contains arduous preparation that lasts six to eighteen months to manifest the practitioner’s Holy Guardian Angel. Many magicians attempted this lofty task; some succeeded, and more— including Aleister Crowley—failed. Though the original centers the solar cycle, Abramelin Lunar Ordeal circles the moon, shortening it to something accomplishable in fortytwo days. Frater Barrabbas presents practitioners with a comprehensive background and history before bestowing all of the ritual lore required to perform the ordeal. Part III of the book reveals Frater Barrabbas’s diary entries from 2009–2011 as he performed and validated the ordeal. The wisdom and instruction found within provides a powerful cornerstone and profound addition to the contemporary art of ritual magic.

About the Author:

Frater Barrabbas Tiresius is a practicing ritual magician who has studied magic and the occult for over forty years. He believes that ritual magic is a discipline whose mystery is unlocked by continual practice and by occult experiences and revelations. Frater Barrabbas believes that traditional approaches should be balanced with creativity and experimentation, and that no occult or magical tradition is exempt from changes and revisions.

Over the years, he found that his practical magical discipline was the real source for all his creative efforts. That creative process helped him build and craft a unique and different kind of magical system, one that is quite unlike any other yet based on common Wiccan practices. So, despite its uniqueness this magical system is capable of being easily adapted and used by others.

Frater Barrabbas is also the founder of a magical order called the Order of the Gnostic Star and he is an elder and lineage holder in the Alexandrian tradition of Witchcraft.

Oracle Decks

The Dragon Rune Oracle 28 Card Deck & Guidebook

The Dragon Rune Oracle is an oracle deck dedicated to connecting and working with the energy of the ancient and powerful Dragon collective overseen by the Queen of Dragons, Tiamat. The swirling mists of the Dragon’s breath can provide insight and information to help the reader navigate their path through this lifetime and its challenges. This deck contains 28 cards and tells the story of the cyclical world of the Dragons, from their inception within the chaos of Ratanen and their battles to find magic in themselves in Sha’an. They travel onward to the peace and balance of Kaegos and the ultimate knowing of Nanen. The path of these runes can reflect our own personal journeys and challenges and, therefore, help us as we look for light in the darkness and understand the chaos.

Imagine yourself on a quest to find answers to the burning questions that play on your mind, that have danced in and out of your dreams for ages. You are told of an ancient cave where the all-knowing Dragon lives and undertake a challenging and perilous journey to find this cave. Through the dense forest undergrowth you spy said cave. You move slowly yet purposefully to its mouth and call to the Dragon. “Ddraig! Ddraig!” you call and hear movement from within. You feel a huge, powerful presence come close to you from within the darkness. “What would you ask of me?” a booming voice calls. So, what would you ask the Dragon? Which questions do you really want the answers to? Remember, the Dragon won’t waste its time on trivialities–this is a chance to ask big questions–so think hard and ask wisely.

About the Author:

For the last decade, he’s offered his work around the UK and Europe being a guest reader and regular workshop facilitator at the College of Psychic Studies in London. The Rag & Bone Man

The rag and bone man comes meandering along your street in the dawn hours. He’s looking for old things that still have a bit of fat left in them, including off-cuts of the dreams of outsiders. If you decide to stop and talk to him, he will tell you the old tales of how to tease out the teeming world of spirits that bulges behind our reality. The Rag & Bone Man’s uncanny narrative, bookended with historical context and a grimoire inspired by the novel, bridges the gap between old ideas and new paradigms with a watchful eye focused on historical biases.

Lee Morgan covers sensationalism and fraud in nineteenth century spiritualism and the ways we manipulated folklore and magic to cover and re-contextualize our wrongdoings in this luminous novel. Some of The Rag & Bone Man’s extra content focuses on the importance of sensory pleasure and alignment with the fetch, while crossing ectoplasmic lines to help you conduct a seance. The rag and bone man is a fixture in the novel’s real life setting and is included in a performance art installation you can experience through a QR code in the book. It’s time to sneak into the rag and bone man’s world–the stories he’s picked up will break your heart.

Mind Over Magick Making Magick in Everyday Life

Wherever you find people, there are stories about magick. Some are myth or folklore, others are tales meant to thrill and intrigue us, and others still are accounts of actual magick, real spirits, and energetic properties of our natural world. The question is whether or not any of it is true.

Mind Over Magick by Tracy Nicholas tackles this complicated—and often personal—inquiry by picking apart what we know, what we don’t know, and what we can’t possibly know to leave us with an evidence-based case for the existence of magick in our world.

Through a mix of philosophy, science, and common sense, Mind Over Magick examines what we can infer about magick from what we already know to be true. Nicholas separates the psychological need to believe in a magick that supernaturally fixes all of our problems without discounting the reality that magick is accessible to us all.
