first tracks Diary of a New Ski Race Parent It is no secret that 100 Mile Nordics has an almost legendary ski racing history. It might have been a few years since the club has hit the road for races but a few of us parents are ready to clear the trail set ahead of us by those who have ventured wintry roads with kids and skis in tow.

Three of our SDP kids raced in Quesnel at the Hallis Lake Ski Trails last winter, where the Cariboo Ski Touring Club held their first Teck Northern Cup - a free technique sprint race. Truth be told, we really had no idea what was happening during the sprint race. The qualifier, heats, and awards presentations were all a mystery right up until it was all over! But we took a lead from our experienced coaches in 100 Mile who always put sportsmanship and fun first and we cheered our kiddos on. And we cheered on the skiers from Vanderhoof, Houston, Prince George, Quesnel, Bella Coola and Williams Lake, too!
definitely made up on the spot. They loved it. It's like a regular meal out but you call yourself a King or a Queen and just feel pretty special. We would encourage any parent interested in racing to try it out next season. It's okay if you don't know what to expect or you aren't sure if it's for you or for your kid. Some things you have to experience before you know what you're saying nay or yay to.
Even though fun comes first (and it certainly did with these kids!), I want to highlight Jaxson, a member of our team who has amazing speed and beautiful technique. Jaxson has been a part of the club as long as he can remember. He says the hills are his specialty. He ski bounds up the hills with ease and he was the only skier I saw dance on the podium, much to the delight of the other clubs. This is a kid who knows how to have fun and compete!

Caledonia Nordic Ski Club Receives $1 Million to Develop Paved Roller Ski Trails!
Many of our SDP kids can share that sentiment. Racing brings another element to cross-county skiing. We saw that it allowed the kids to try out new trails, snow conditions, lodge fare, and play with kids from around the region on the giant snow hill. The giant snow hill was definitely a highlight in Quesnel.
On April 25, 2023, the Province of British Columbia, under the Destination Development Fund, announced Caledonia Nordic Ski Club will receive $1 million in funding for the development of paved roller ski/roller biathlon competitions trails. “We are absolutely overjoyed and incredibly thankful to the Province of BC for the approval of this grant,” said Kevin Pettersen, Chair of Competitions at Caledonia Nordic. “Paved competition trails for xc and biathlon have been a key piece within our strategic and facilities development plans for well over a decade. These strategic plans have been so important for having shaped the way our club has become a world class Nordic facility, and now this enables us to realize our strategic vision to become a year-round Nordic facility for all four seasons.
Parent Takeaway We will know how a sprint race works next time. We also learned how much fun it is to stay in a hotel with kids from other clubs. We spent time in the pool and hot tub chatting with parents and feeling both impressed and encouraged by the awesome kids involved in cross-country skiing. What Happens When a Small Northern Club Dreams Big?
My first experiences cross country skiing were at Hollyburn in the 1980’s and 90’s, with large fluffy flakes of snow catching the flood lights in the evenings and visits to the original historic Hollyburn Lodge, which was open and welcoming with a large wood stove. These memories were etched in my mind. When my family moved from the lower mainland to northeast BC in the early 2000’s, and I was introduced to the very small Whiskey Jack Nordic Ski Club, the ski facilities I had taken for granted were acutely missed. In 2003 I was invited to become club president to help with the scant paper work … which soon turned into a strategic planning activity that lasted through the next 18 years. During that time the club saw incredible growth as successful fundraising improved our grooming fleet, built storage for equipment and expanded the Beatton Park ski trail system. A highlight was hosting the Cross Country and Biathlon events for the 2020 BC Winter Games - a story in itself. A day lodge became our top priority around 2018, but we knew

Website: whiskeyjacknordic.ca the process would be slow and we knew we would need to exercise extreme patience in getting permission from BC Parks as well as in piecing together all the funding. The first task was to get a sketch of what we wanted to build. The sketch evolved into concept drawings and then plans of what would eventually get built. The budget was somewhat established in 2019 but we all know
what happens to budgets, despite contingencies. As every fundraiser knows, a big project takes time, and, as it was not an option to borrow, we needed all the funding approved and in-hand before we could proceed. Additionally, many grants require matching funds in place at the time of application, so we needed to try and get enough cash donations from businesses and promises of funding as well as actual funding. Annual intakes for some grants meant waiting a year to apply, then another six months to see if we received the grant. Other grants are one-off opportunities so if you are not ready when they come around you miss that opportunity. Imagine holding that ready position for three years!
During this period of getting all the grants in place the design changed somewhat (from being built on piles to constructing a concrete basement so we could house our stock of rental skis), and the cost of construction went up drastically. What was an achievable budget in 2019 doubled by 2021 and with insufficient funding the project was delayed once again. Another lucky break: Northern Development Initiative Trust had in the meantime changed their funding programs and we were now eligible for a larger grant. This was a game changer. That grant combined with the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, our local regional district, Co-op Community Spaces and numerous local oil & gas companies, meant that we could start construction. Work began in September 2021 and we spent the winter skiing past an ever changing construction site that would soon become the focus of our club operations. Now we have an operational day lodge and can host courses without booking a room elsewhere in the community, host events, be open and available consistently on the weekends, invite school children to try cross country skiing, and more. It is becoming a destination for new skiers and all visitors to Beatton Park. But best of all it is a place where we can meet other skiers and actually stop and have conversations to get to know everyone a little better. Our volunteer base has expanded as a whole roster of new volunteers work to keep the lodge open every weekend and help renters get into skis and off along the trails. The wood stove is lit and the hot chocolate is ready; we welcome everyone to make a trip to Fort St. John to Beatton Provincial Park to see our amazing new day lodge situated in a northern boreal forest, and to ski our beautiful groomed trails! There have been 5,969 participants in the Teck Regional Camp Program since its inception in 2012. There have been 47,700+ participants in Teck-sponsored competitions since 2012.
Sport Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) has been and is a catalyst for change and improvement that helps our sport achieve its goals of fostering both life-long participation and international excellence. Within the LTAD framework, the Learning to Train (L2T) and Training to Train (T2T) stages of development are identified as the most important stages of athletic preparation. In recognition of this, in 2012 Cross Country BC launched a new athlete development initiative – the Skier Development Program sponsored by Teck, a diversified resource company based in British Columbia. The Teck Skier Development Program targets skiers 8 to 14 years of age, and combines developmental camps and races with a focus on regional activity that is both affordable and accessible. The program has been an unprecedented success, with a record number of young skiers participating in both camps and races. The National/International Scene 2024 Para Biathlon World Championship & 2024 Para Nordic World Cup Finals Join as two worlds come together March 3 – 17, 2024 It's so exciting that in just five years after hosting the 2019 World Para Nordic Skiing Championships, the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club (CNSC) and the City of Prince George will be hosting both the 2024 Para Biathlon World Championships and the 2024 Para Nordic World Cup Finals (March 3 - 17, 2024). In 2019, the World Para Nordic Skiing Championships attracted over 20 teams and more than 100 of the world's best Para Nordic athletes to Prince George. This was the first time that Prince George hosted a World Championships of any kind, and the first time that the World Para Nordic Skiing Championships were held in Canada. Both CNSC and the City of Prince George warmly embraced the teams from around the world and Team Canada had an incredible performance. Collin Cameron (of Bracebridge, On) won the first gold for Canada and became the first Para Nordic world champion on Canadian snow! The entire Canadian Para Nordic ski team had a phenomenal performance in 2019 and expanded this success in subsequent world championships and Paralympic Winter Games. It'll be amazing to see so many of them back in 2024! After the success of 2019, the work never stopped to attract more world level Para Nordic events to Prince George, and it was incredible to once again be given the honour to host not just one, but two world para Nordic events. These events in 2024 will be very similar to the 2019 World Para Nordic Championships attracting over 100 of the world’s best para Nordic athletes from over 20 countries. The governance of Para Nordic skiing (including Para Biathlon) was officially transferred from the International Paralympic Committee to FIS in July 2022 and this new format (with the Para Biathlon World Championships and the Para Nordic World

Highlights from the 2022-23 Season Three BC para athletes brought home a total of seven gold medals from the 2023 Canada Winter Games - Logan Cox (Kimberley Nordic Club) and Kaden Baum and Lily Brooke (Larch Hills Nordic Society, Salmon Arm). Natalie Wilkie earned three medals in Cross Country at the 2023 FIS World Para Nordic Skiing Championships. Refer to page 47 of this publication for more detail.

Standards for Cross Country Skiing
The L2T (Dryland) Workshop is the fourth step in the NCCP progression. Coaches are taught about developmental age, physical literacy, team building, athletic components (aerobic fitness, speed, etc.), nutrition, how to design their own sport program, adventure-based activities (year-round), roller-skiing and planning a practice. Prerequisite: Community Coach Workshop.
Did you know that coaches are required to have minimum training in order to supervise, instruct or coach ski activities for children under the age of 17 years? If an individual is teaching someone to ski, they must have this training. If an individual is just helping the group (serving hot chocolate, following behind the last skier in the group as they ski around a trail, helping to put on gloves and skis), they do not require minimum training.
18.25 hours. The workshop fee for NC/CCBC members is $100.00. The L2T (On-Snow) Workshop is the second half of the L2T program and the fifth step in the NCCP progression. This workshop is designed to train coaches on team management, supporting athletes at a competition, teaching and learning, equipment selection, ski preparation and how to effectively teach ski technique. Prerequisite: L2T (Dryland) Workshop.
NCCP Intro to Community Coach Online Modules There are two progressive online e-learning modules designed to provide parents and other beginner coaches with basic information and a feeling of confidence as they begin their role as a coach. These modules educate individuals on how to deliver a series of age-appropriate skill development sessions under the supervision of more experienced coaches. The orientation is towards children under nine years of age (“Active Start” and "Fundamentals" stages of athlete development). Coaches are taught basic coaching skills, growth and development considerations, and how to set up a ski playground. This is entry level, and there are no prerequisites except enthusiasm and the minimum age requirement of 14 years. 'Coach Initiation in Sport' Module 1 hour NC 'ICC' Module 6 hours

NCCP CCI Advanced (T2T) Workshops The CCI Advanced program provides tools and develops skills that a coach can use to (1) teach athletes how to build an aerobic base, speed and strength and further develop and consolidate sport specific skills as appropriate for their developmental age, and (2) design and deliver an annual sport program that takes into consideration optimal trainability and the maturity/readiness (physical, mental, cognitive and emotional maturity) of individual athletes 12 to 16 years of age (the “Training to Train” stage of development).

NCCP Community Coaching Workshop The “CC” Workshop is the third step in the NCCP coach education program. It provides essential training for coaches delivering effective skill development programs for children six to nine years of age (the “FUNdamentals” stage of skier development). This program is designed to train coaches to teach children technical skills, select games that reinforce the technical skill being taught, design and lead on-snow sessions, select and prepare equipment for young children, and make learning FUN. This workshop includes on-snow sessions. Successful completion of the ICC Workshop, enthusiasm and a minimum age of 14 years are the only prerequisites.
The T2T (Dryland) Workshop is the sixth step in the NCCP progression. Coaches are taught about growth and maturation, energy systems, training intensities, monitoring and recovery, strength, speed, flexibility, roller-skiing and other dryland ski simulation techniques, exercise performance and health, etc. Prerequisite: Both L2T Workshops (Dryland/On-Snow) and L2T Coach Experience Form. The T2T (On-Snow) Workshop is the second half of the CCI Advanced program and the seventh step in the NCCP progression. It is designed to train coaches to develop an effective competition plan for a team, prepare for a competition, support athletes at a competition, teach basic mental skills, refine all ski techniques, test and prepare skis, and make ethical decisions. Prerequisite: T2T (Dryland) Workshop.
16 hours. The workshop fee for NC/CCBC members is $105.00.
NCCP CCI (L2T) Workshops The CCI program develops skills and provides tools that a coach can use to (1) create a fun, team-oriented environment that will motivate children to achieve their personal goals in sport and develop a lifelong interest in the fitness and health benefits of cross-country skiing, and (2) deliver a well-rounded sport program with an emphasis
17.5 hours / workshop. The fee for each workshop is $125.00 for members of NC/CCBC.

The BC Games Society will again offer an Indigenous Participation Program whereby, in addition to the quota for cross country skiing, an additional eight athletes with Indigenous ancestry can attend the Games. Registration Fee: All athletes that qualify at the Zone Trials to attend the BC Winter Games must pay a Games Registration Fee ($175.00) prior to January 15th, 2024. Registration and payment is done via a Zone4 link provided by CCBC to all qualified participants. Coaching Certification Requirements: The Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches for each zone require NCCP CCI-L2T certification.

The remaining 18 positions (nine male and nine female) will be allocated to zones according to the total participation numbers of eligible athletes in the Zone Trials.
Eligibility Restrictions: Refer to section V-2 of the BC Winter Games Rule Book. Athletes born in 2009 or 2010 are eligible. Athletes must compete in a Zone Trial in order to qualify (refer to page 35 of this magazine for information on the Zone Trials). It has been developed in parallel with the second level of the competency-based NCCP, which provides coach training specific to the needs of skiers this age. Program materials include an enrolment kit, an ageappropriate booklet that provides a comprehensive record of the young skier’s ski career, and “technique” and “program” award stickers to chart the different levels of achievement. The objective is for children to learn basic cross-country ski skills (both classic and skating) and to instill a lifelong interest in the sport, thereby enhancing their quality of life and health. The Kal Tire SDP is a modern, state-of-the-art progression of skill development programs for children. This exciting program conforms to the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) Model and provides a vertically integrated continuum of development opportunities for children in the first three stages of skier development. The objective is for the participants to become technically competent cross-country skiers, and to utilize those skills to explore a wide range of cross-country ski activities, from back country excursions to Ski Tournaments. Officials The Officials Development Program consists of five steps from entry level through international level. It includes technical delegate, event management and course conductor training as well as standard training for officials. LEVEL 1 This is an eight hour course that provides an overview of what a cross-country ski competition is all about. The focus is on the duties of minor officials for “Olympic” style (interval start, pursuit start, mass start, team sprint, individual sprint, relay) and “Loppet” style (mass participation) competitions. This is a 16 hour course that prepares officials for a leadership role on a competition committee for club, provincial, and most national level races, including the Teck BC Cup Series, Teck Regional Cup Series, BC Winter Games and loppets. Teck BC Cup Series The Teck BC Cup Series is the premier race series for cross country skiing in British Columbia. It is a principle component of the athlete development model for high performance cross country skiing, as well as a family-oriented event that encourages participation from skiers of all age groups and a wide range of skill levels.
There are three special features built into the Series: the BC Championship Club Trophy that recognizes the achievements of club teams, and the BC Cup Series Overall Awards and College/University Aggregate Awards that recognize individual performances. BC Championship Club Trophy: The Teck BC Championships is a two-day event with an ‘interval start’ (Saturday) and ‘relay start’ (Sunday). Club skiers of all ages and skill levels participate in order to help their club achieve points. The club that accumulates the most points is the winner of the Club Trophy. Guidelines for this program are available from the Cross Country BC website. This is the most exciting competitive event of the season and a great opportunity to introduce young skiers to the Teck BC Cup Series! 2023 Canada Winter Games 'Flag Point' Ranking: BC is #1 in Cross Country Skiing
2026 BC Winter Games The BC Games Society has announced that Trail-Rossland will host the 2026 BC Winter Games. The Games were previously held at this location in both 1982 and 2006.
The cross country ski events will be hosted by the Black Jack Cross Country Ski Club.
At the Canada Winter Games, which are held once every four years, ‘Flag Points’ are calculated to assess the depth of provincial/territorial sport programs and to provide a benchmark for future development. We are proud to announce that British Columbia was the top ranked province/territory for the sport of cross country skiing at the 2023 Games in Prince Edward Island. This is the third time BC has achieved this recognition – the first time was at the 2015 Games held in Prince George, BC, and the second time was at the 2019 Games held in Red Deer, Alberta.
Two ZONE4 Race Management Clinics
New Opportunity for Special Olympics Athletes
Telemark Nordic Club (Kelowna) will host a ZONE4 Race Management Clinic from September 29th to October 1st, and Cariboo Ski Touring Quesnel will host the same clinic from October 13th to 15th, 2023. This course teaches participants race management skills starting with the creation of a race registration page through to posting results for all the official race formats.
Cross Country BC in partnership with the BC Games Society will be piloting cross country ski events for Special Olympics athletes at the 2024 BC Winter Games in Quesnel.
The Games are a developmental platform for many athletes who go on to higher levels of competition such as the Canada Winter Games and the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. An average of 1200 athletes and 2500 volunteers are involved.

UNBC Offered First-of-its-kind Tuition Credit to NC Selection Trials Participants The University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) joined the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club (CNSC) to provide Canada’s elite cross-country skiing athletes with an exceptional experience at the 2023 Nordiq Canada Selection Trials and Nordiq Cup (COC) held in Prince George in January. For the first time in Nordiq Canada event history, a postsecondary tuition credit was made available to participating athletes when UNBC offered a $2,000 Nordiq Cup Tuition Credit to eligible participants. The Nordiq Cup Tuition Credit was built on a longstanding relationship between UNBC and CNSC focused on supporting high-performance student-athletes. In 2013, this partnership led to the creation of the UNBC Otway Nordic Legacy Scholarship Fund, championed by CNSC members, which provided financial awards to Cross Country and Biathlon athletes studying at UNBC.
