Cross Country BC Tops Flag Point Rankings at 2019 Canada Games Cross Country BC was ranked #1 province/territory overall at the 2019 Canada Winter Games held in Red Deer Alberta this past February. This is the second time our division has achieved top ranking at this event. The first time was at the previous Games which were held in Prince George in 2015.

Skmana in the Heart of the Shuswap A little club with a big heart, our members have cared for our trails, located on unceded Secwepemc land near Chase, since the early 1980's. The kids who participated in Jackrabbits then are now parents themselves. With this second wave of young families, Skmana was excited to launch a Bunnyrabbits program during the 2018-2019 season. This project was funded in part by a grant from viaSport BC and the province of British Columbia and funded in part by the Government of Canada. Through viaSport BC’s Community Support Program Development Fund, community sport can be more accessible to people in rural communities. With this $3,000 funding boost that covered the cost of an equipment fleet for 14 kids and coach training, Skmana was thrilled to revitalize weekly coaching sessions for 4 – 5 year olds by offering a free program and use of equipment (with the purchase of an annual membership). Add to this another 20 sets of children's skis from Rossignol (an amazing surprise through our membership drive last season) and we're looking to expand ....cont'd on page 38

Nickel Plate Rescues Teck BC Cup #1 When the Caledonia Nordic Ski Club (Prince George) couldn’t host Teck BC Cup #1 due to a shortage of snow, the Nickel Plate Cross Country Ski Club (Penticton) stepped in to the rescue. Nickel Plate had only days to prepare for their first-ever BC Cup, and they did an amazing job of making it all happen!

What's happening at WHISKEY JACK? Back in 1982 Fort St. John was awarded the 1984 BC Winter Games and nearby Beatton Provincial Park, located on Charlie Lake, was chosen as the venue for the cross country ski events. At the time the site was relatively undeveloped despite being set aside in the 1930’s as a recreational park for residents of both Fort St. John and Charlie Lake. To host the Games, approximately12 kms of ski trails, designed on the back of a napkin, were developed to the narrowest trail width specs of the day. Fast forward to 2005 when a new club member persuaded the executive to, at the very least, upgrade the grooming equipment from an old, donated Yamaha sled and a home welded roller and track setter to an old twin track with slightly better attachments. Over the next six years, the club raised enough funds to acquire three new sleds and attachments, storing them first under a tarp then into a sea can during the summer months. Over the years the club saw the need to improve the width of the trails to accommodate skate skiers. The task of figuring out how to pay for the work was daunting. We took baby steps at first and hired a trail designer to come up with a trail plan. Then we went through the complex task of applying to BC Parks for permission to construct the wider trails. Timing was on our side, however, with the provincial government in the throes of Olympic fever and wanting to spread the joy around. Fortunately, we were able to get the bulk of our funding from a one-time Olympic legacy grant. All along the way, through our various fundraising initiatives, local corporate sponsorship has been strong, particularly when it comes to in-kind support. The Peace River Regional District has been a stalwart supporter from the beginning; without their early support, it is unlikely we would have progressed past the old Yamaha sled.

In 2013, the widening and expansion to the trail system was complete and club membership doubled from around 40-50 to a consistent 80+ members. Grooming hours increased but so did the number of volunteers. With more skiers came the desire for programming, so in 2015 the club began a Skill Development Program, training coaches and building capacity to meet the demands for beginner lessons and a kid’s program. By this time the sea can was becoming far too small to store our equipment so we looked at building a shop, once again diving into the various grant programs in order to realize the project. In 2017, we managed to construct a 30 x 40 shop to eventually house the assorted rental skis and program supplies we were starting to

amass, as well as a bigger groomer in the future. The shop will be fully completed this summer with the installation of vents to accommodate a heat source as well as insulation. As the club’s ski programs grew, so did the need for a stadium area. Despite the small price tag on this initiative, it took a long time for the project to get approval from BC Parks. At the 11th hour, days before the snow started to fall, we were granted permission to proceed and four days later, the stadium area was complete. It has been a resounding success! It is filled with skiers every weekend and has made hosting events a breeze as we are no longer crowded into the widest section of our trails to start a loppet! The next project is a day lodge, as the current BC Parks hut no longer fits our growing membership (now at 150+). Fundraising for this initiative is currently underway. Fingers crossed, we will build it in 2020.

New trail being built.

We are the host club for the cross country ski events at the 2020 BC Winter Games being held in Fort St. John, and we have been working hard to get all the pieces in place, including building a timing hut which will be a coordinated effort by area businesses. In addition, the Powering Potential Fund, which is administered by the Province of British Columbia and is designed “to maximize and extend the impact of the Games long after the ceremonies are complete has given us funding towards improved grooming equipment. It truly takes a village to raise a child, and the support from all sectors over the years has affirmed our belief that our younger years are almost over. Continued on page 38.....

100 Mile Nordics Install State-of-the-Art Lighting System

Photos on pgs 8 & 9: N. Manhard, 100 Mile Nordic Ski Society

It has been thirty-five years since the 100 Mile Nordic Ski Society planned and built the first network of ski trails on the north-facing slopes of the 99 Mile hill next to the town of 100 Mile House. At that time (1984-1985) they constructed approximately 6.5 km of trail. In 1987 lights were installed on 4.5 km of an expanding trail network, making this the second cross-country ski facility in BC to have lit trails. In 1988, the club hosted their first National Championships. Now that is what you call dedicated volunteerism! Fast forward thirty-two years and some of those same club volunteers are at it again, planning and organizing the installation of a new state-of-the-art lighting system. The existing 32-year-old system was showing its age. The old mercury vapor lights were energy hogs and the wooden light poles were deteriorating. In addition the overhead wires were vulnerable to falling dead trees and limbs as a result of the pine beetle infestation that swept through our area creating havoc along our trails and much work for our trail crew.

Top & middle photos: concrete bases that support the metal light poles. Bottom photo: the metal light poles.

8

In 2018 the 100 Mile Nordic Ski Society received $388,375 from the Province of British Columbia’s Rural Dividend Program, and $40,000 from the Cariboo Regional District to install a new underground LED lighting system on 4.5 km of existing cross-country ski trails.

The lighting project started with an engineered plan to reduce the maintenance and energy costs associated with the existing system. The new lighting project will consist of installing 78 metal light poles, underground wiring and 78 – 60 watt LED lamps. The system will illuminate the stadium and will run along our most popular loop trail and up to the Bean Stock cabin. The system will be highly efficient, virtually fire proof, low maintenance and long lasting. Our club is rebuilding and growing. More children are taking part in the Skill Development Program, our Ski S’Kool program has had three successful years and some of our new programs such as Skoga (evening skiing followed by yoga in the lodge) are proving popular. The club facility has become an important hub for winter sport in our community and in our region. We now have over 45 km of cross-country ski trails for all levels of skiers and 7 km of snowshoe trails. Plus we have a full functioning 3000 square foot day lodge open daily during ski season (except for Christmas day), offering freshly made food, and ski and snowshoe rentals. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia, the Cariboo Regional District and the on-going support we receive annually from the District of 100 Mile House. Without their support we would be in the dark! We are also beyond grateful to our dedicated and skilled volunteers, to all our members, to the community and the region for their support. The project is well underway with a projected completion date of October 2019. By Kristi Iverson, 100 Mile Nordic Society

Vikings Gather....

Photos: Wells Gray Outdoors Club

BIRCHLEG Each year in early February the Wells Gray Outdoors Club hosts a unique Birchleg Ski Event at their Candle Creek Ski Area near Clearwater, BC. Many of the participants dress up as Vikings, a Norwegian-style lunch is served, and a great time is had by all. The Birchleg is a fun ski event that re-enacts a cross country ski trip made by two Viking warriors in the 13th Century. King Haakon of Norway was murdered in 1204 during a time of civil war. The King’s infant son was in immediate peril of the same fate. Two Viking warriors loyal to their dead king and his heir took the baby to safety in Trondheim. Their flight was in midwinter, skiing 55 kilometres across the mountains. Holding the child secure behind a shield, these warriors were armed with a battle-axe and spears. Young Haakon Haakonson grew to adulthood in safety, returning to Norway to claim his father’s throne. Teck Skier Development Program

Photo: G. Redman, Telemark Nordic Club

Photo: D. Clark, Kimberley Nordic Ski Club

• There have been 3,672 participants in the Teck Regional Camp Program in the seven years since its inception in 2012. • There have been 32,000+ participants in Teck-sponsored competitions since 2012. Sport Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) is a catalyst for change and improvement that can help our sport achieve its goals of fostering both life-long participation and international excellence. Within the LTAD framework, the Learning to Train (L2T) and Training to Train (T2T) stages of development are identified as the most important stages of athletic preparation. In recognition of this, in 2012 Cross Country BC launched a new athlete development initiative – the Skier Development Program sponsored by Teck, a diversified resource company based in British Columbia. The Teck Skier Development Program targets skiers 9-14 years of age, and combines developmental camps and races with a focus on regional activity that is both affordable and accessible. The first seven years of the new program have been an unprecedented success, with a record number of young skiers participating in both camps and races. Cross Country BC wishes to thank Teck and the many volunteers who made these developmental opportunities possible. For more information about the program, visit: http://crosscountrybc.ca.

In January, BC had a best ever result at an FIS World Junior Championships when Remi Drolet (Black Jack Cross Country Ski Club, Rossland) finished 7th in the Men’s 30 km classic event. The 2019 Championships were held in Lahti, Finland. The previous best result for a BC athlete was Gareth William's 11th place finish in the 20 kilometer Skiathlon event in 2017. For more information about past BC performances at the World Juniors visit: http://www.crosscountrybc.ca/ world-jr-championships-bc “Remi was boxed out a little at the finish, and otherwise maybe would have moved ahead a position or even two. To the best of our recollection this puts him into some illustrious company, at least in distance events, with only Alex Harvey with a 2nd, 3rd and 4th and Bert Bullock with a 4th in the 1974 European Junior Championships (soon to be the World Championships), having finished ahead of him in this category of competition.” Rémi completed the 30km classic race in 1:15:23, less than seven seconds behind the winner.

COACHING PROGRAM MANDATORY QUALIFICATION

(2) deliver a well-rounded sport program with an emphasis on skill development to children nine to 12 years of age (the “Learning to Train” stage of development).

Standards for Cross-Country Skiing Did you know that coaches are required to have minimum training in order to supervise, instruct or coach ski activities for children under the age of 16 years? If an individual is teaching someone to ski, they must have this training. If an individual is just helping the group (serving hot chocolate, following behind the last skier in the group as they ski around a trail, helping to put on gloves and skis), they do not require minimum training.

The L2T (Dryland) Workshop is the fourth step in the NCCP progression. Coaches are taught about developmental age, physical literacy, team building, athletic components (aerobic fitness, speed, etc.), nutrition, how to design their own sport program, adventure-based activities (yearround), roller-skiing and planning a practice. Prerequisite: Community Coach Workshop.

NCCP Intro to Community Coaching Online Modules

The L2T (On-Snow) Workshop is the second half of the L2T program and the fifth step in the NCCP progression. This workshop is designed to train coaches on team management, supporting athletes at a competition, teaching and learning, equipment selection, ski preparation and how to effectively teach ski technique. Prerequisite: L2T (Dryland) Workshop.

18.25 hours. The workshop fee for NC/CCBC members is $100.00.

There are two progressive online e-learning modules designed to provide parents and other beginner coaches with basic information and a feeling of confidence as they begin their role as a coach. These modules educate individuals on how to deliver a series of age-appropriate skill development sessions under the supervision of more experienced coaches. The orientation is towards children under nine years of age (“Active Start” and "Fundamentals" stages of athlete development). Coaches are taught basic coaching skills, growth and development considerations, and how to set up a ski playground. This is entry level, and there are no prerequisites except enthusiasm and the minimum age requirement of 14 years. CAC 'ICC' Multisport Module NC 'ICC' Module

1 hour 6 hours

16.5 hours. The workshop fee for NC/CCBC members is $100.00.

NCCP CCI Advanced (T2T) Workshops The CCI Advanced program provides tools and develops skills that a coach can use to (1) teach athletes how to build an aerobic base, speed and strength and further develop and consolidate sport specific skills as appropriate for their developmental age, and (2) design and deliver an annual sport program that takes into consideration optimal trainability and the maturity/readiness (physical, mental, cognitive and emotional maturity) of individual athletes 12 to 16 years of age (the “Training to Train” stage of development).

$15.00 $52.00

NCCP Community Coaching Workshop The “CC” Workshop is the third step in the NCCP coach education program. It provides essential training for coaches delivering effective skill development programs for children six to nine years of age (the “FUNdamentals” stage of skier development). This program is designed to train coaches to teach children technical skills, select games that reinforce the technical skill being taught, design and lead on-snow sessions, select and prepare equipment for young children, and make learning FUN. This workshop includes on-snow sessions. Successful completion of the ICC Workshop, enthusiasm and a minimum age of 14 years are the only prerequisites.

The T2T (Dryland) Workshop is the sixth step in the NCCP progression. Coaches are taught about growth and maturation, energy systems, training intensities, monitoring and recovery, strength, speed, flexibility, roller-skiing and other dryland ski simulation techniques, exercise performance and health, etc. Prerequisite: L2T (On-Snow) Workshop. The T2T (On-Snow) Workshop is the second half of the CCI Advanced program and the seventh step in the NCCP progression. It is designed to train coaches to develop an effective competition plan for a team, prepare for a competition, support athletes at a competition, teach basic mental skills, refine all ski techniques, test and prepare skis, and make ethical decisions. Prerequisite: T2T (Dryland) Workshop.

16 hours. The workshop fee for NC/CCBC members is $105.00.

NCCP CCI (L2T) Workshops The CCI program develops skills and provides tools that a coach can use to (1) create a fun, team-oriented environment that will motivate children to achieve their personal goals in sport and develop a lifelong interest in the fitness and health benefits of cross-country skiing, and

growth last season. This growth was thanks to a combination of a new logo and website (each designed by club members, which enabled stronger promotional campaigns), moving to online registration, hosting open houses, and community networking. On the horizon is fundraising for a snowmobile to replace the older one. Skmana's trails are a true gem in the heart of the Shuswap, so it's important to ensure we have the equipment to keep the trails open and in beautiful condition. Hope to see you on Skmana trails this year! By Michelle Tsutsumi, Skmana Ski and Snowshoe Club

Encouraging Connection at Whistler Olympic Park Cross country skiing is an individual sport, which is why for Whistler Olympic Park, it is even more important to connect and develop the Nordic ski community. Numerous park initiatives through the winter help skiers of all levels to network, exchange knowledge and find partners to ski with. Starting with the early season skiing opportunity on “Callaghan Gold”, a trail created annually in late October/ early November out of 10,000 cubic meters of stored snow from the previous winter, individuals can reconnect and ski after the off-season, even previous to the park’s official opening day. Each winter, about 15 regional, national and international competitions are held at the park, among those the Payak, BC’s largest recreational loppet which brought over 700 skiers together in February 2019. Community events bring like-minded skiers together, such as “Women’s Ski Day” in January, connecting and inspiring 100 women of all skill levels through a full day of lessons and workshops, or “Dog Day” in March with special activation on the park’s extensive dog trail network. WHISKEY JACK continued from page 7... FIRST TRACKS continued from page 5...

Because of the strong foundation within Skmana (e.g. long-time volunteers), and a willingness to make some changes with the addition of new volunteers (e.g., increased capacity), the club experienced tremendous

Cross country skiing is the part of winter we all look forward to, and despite the shorter days and cold weather, we are a hardy lot and know the value of a good buff and blue wax! Beatton Park has now become a major attraction for outdoor winter recreation enthusiasts with snowshoe trails, a toboggan hill and cross country ski trails that accommodate all skill levels. We are grateful for the many supporters of our initiatives along the way and look forward to continued supportive partnerships in the years to come. By Eliza Stanford, Whiskey Jack Nordic Ski Club

Skill Development Program (SDP) The Jackrabbit Program, which is directed at skiers in the “FUNdamentals” stage of development (children six to nine years), is the second level of the program. It has been developed in parallel with the second level of the competency-based NCCP, which provides coach training specific to the needs of skiers this age. Program materials include an enrolment kit, an age-appropriate booklet that provides a comprehensive record of the young skier’s ski career, and “technique” and “program” award stickers to chart the different levels of achievement. The objective is for children to learn basic cross-country ski skills (both classic and skating) and to instill a lifelong interest in the sport, thereby enhancing their quality of life and health. In addition, it is designed to:

The Kal Tire SDP is a modern, state-of-the-art progression of skill development programs for children. This exciting program conforms to the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) Model and provides a vertically integrated continuum of development opportunities for children in the first three stages of skier development.

Help children develop a positive self-image.

•

Be fun.

•

Provide children an opportunity to make ski friends.

•

Develop fundamental movement skills.

•

Help children develop an awareness and appreciation of our natural environment.

Help children develop confidence.

•

Be fun.

•

Provide children an opportunity to ski and socialize with their ski friends.

•

Build overall motor skills.

•

Help children develop outdoor winter safety skills.

The Track Attack Program, which is directed at skiers in the “Learning to Train” stage of development (skiers 10 to 12), is the third level of the program. It has been developed in parallel with the third level of the NCCP system. Program materials include a program-specific enrolment kit and coaching materials specific to this stage in the skier development progression. The objective is for the participants to become technically competent cross-country skiers, and to utilize those skills to explore a wide range of cross-country ski activities, from back country excursions to Ski Tournaments. In addition, it is designed to:

The first level is the Bunnyrabbit Program, which is directed at children in the “Active Start” stage of development (children five years of age and younger). Program materials include an enrolment kit, a kid-friendly, age-appropriate booklet, and skill award stickers. It has been developed in parallel with the first level of the competency-based National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), which now provides coach training specific to the needs of this age group. The objective of the new program is to introduce cross-country skiing and the healthy lifestyle associated with it through organized activity and active play. In addition, the program is designed to: •

•

•

Develop fitness through active play, games and other activities.

•

Be fun.

•

Provide an opportunity to be part of a sport “team”.

•

Develop competence in cross-country ski skills.
