Before you start If you've never picked up a hook before, that's totally fine, this happy little potato is a great first project, and it'll be cheering you on the whole time.

This is a real pattern, and its pictures come from it, not the other way round. They are not made up by AI: our own 3D crochet engine counted every round and rendered every pattern picture (the toy, each piece, each step) from the pattern's own stitches. An image model only polishes the surface, and the shape is checked against the render. We crocheted it by hand to test it.

Size and gauge This positive potato ends up around 4 in (11 cm) tall using this yarn and a 3.5 mm (US E-4) hook: roughly 20 sc and 22 rounds per 4 in (10 cm). Gauge doesn't really matter: a different yarn or hook just makes it a different size.

Good to know Work your stitches tight, or the stuffing will peek out. Notice holes? Switch to a smaller hook. When you're going to sew a piece on, keep a long tail on it. Safety eyes and small parts can be a choking hazard for children under 3. For little ones, embroider the eyes instead.

Time for eyes! On the smoothest side (that's the face, the little jog where laps start goes at the back), put the safety eyes in between round 18 and round 19, with 6 stitches between them. Before you snap the backs on inside, take a look from a distance: once they click, they stay forever.

Push the filling in now, while the opening is still wide enough. Grab little tufts, start by tucking them into the far end, and keep at it until it feels solid and bouncy. Add a bit more before the final round. Yours should look like a stuffed piece about 3 in (7.7 cm) wide and 3.9 in (9.8 cm) tall, with an opening of 18 stitches left.

When you're done, snip the yarn and leave a tail about the length of your hand. Put it on the yarn needle, pass it through the front loop of every one of the last stitches, then pull it tight, just like a drawstring bag, the hole closes up. If this piece will be sewn on, keep a long tail; if not, tuck it inside. All set! Your potato body is now a firmly stuffed piece, fully closed, and measures around 3 in (7.7 cm) wide by 4.1 in (10.4 cm) tall.

Slip stitch into the next stitch. Then cut your yarn, leaving a long tail, around 12 in (30 cm), since you'll use it to sew the arm on. Push the stuffing gently to the end using the back of your hook to stuff it softly. All set! Now your arm should be an open piece, roughly 0.6 in (1.4 cm) long and about 0.6 in (1.6 cm) wide, and you'll have a long yarn tail.

Foot

Put a slip stitch in the next stitch. Then cut the yarn, but leave a long tail, around 12 in (30 cm), since you'll use it to sew the foot on. Stuff it gently, using the back of your hook to push the stuffing down to the end. All set! Your foot should be an open piece now, roughly 0.7 in (1.9 cm) long and 0.9 in (2.2 cm) wide, with a long yarn tail.

Putting the positive potato together Your potato will come to life once you sew the pieces on, so go slow and add them one at a time, everything's ready now. 1

Attach the arms

Place the first one on the potato body at round 14, one on each side. Hold the open edge flat against the potato body and pin it all round. Using the long tail, sew all the way around the edge: under one stitch of the arm, then under the potato body right next to it. Add a last bit of stuffing just before the gap closes. It should end up pointing out and up, about 50 degrees from straight out. Then do the same for the other one on the other side, mirrored.

2

Attach the feet

Place the first one on the potato body at round 4, one on each side. Hold the open edge flat against the potato body and pin it all round. Using the long tail, sew all the way around the edge: under one stitch of the foot, then under the potato body right next to it. Add a last bit of stuffing just before the gap closes. It should end up pointing straight out. Then do the same for the other one on the other side, mirrored.

4

Sew the eye glints

With white yarn on the potato body, around round 18, one on each side of the front. How: one small stitch over the top of each eye, a little to its outer side, the eye shines.

5

With dark chocolate yarn on the potato body, around round 17, at the front, in the middle. How: come up at one corner, go down 3 stitches along, then catch the middle of that long stitch and pull it down one round to make a curve.

Sew the cheeks

6

With pink yarn on the potato body, around round 16, one on each side of the front. How: 2 short stitches side by side make one cheek.

7

Sew the potato spot lower right

Hide the tails

For every loose tail: thread it on the needle, poke it into the toy and out somewhere else, give it a little tug, and snip it close. The end disappears inside. All done!

Sew the potato spot top

With brown yarn on the potato body, around round 24, at the front, a little to the toy's right. How: make 4 or 5 stitches on top of each other over the same 2 stitches until it looks nice and plump.

8

With brown yarn on the potato body, around round 11, at the front, a little to the toy's right. How: make 4 or 5 stitches on top of each other over the same 2 stitches until it looks nice and plump.

9

Sew the mouth

Sew the potato spot lower left

With brown yarn on the potato body, around round 9, at the front, a little to the toy's left. How: make 4 or 5 stitches on top of each other over the same 2 stitches until it looks nice and plump.

You did it, your positive potato is finished and smiling right at you! Tuck it in a pocket or give it to someone who needs a little cheering on. Made one? Share it with #crochetpirate. We'd love to see it.
