Before you start Hi there! You're going to crochet a happy little pineapple. It has a leafy top and tiny feet. Just go one small step at a time, and you'll be amazed how fast it comes to life.

Size and gauge When you use this yarn and a 3.5 mm (US E-4) hook, Pineapple ends up around 6 in (14 cm) tall: roughly 20 sc and 22 rounds per 4 in (10 cm). Gauge doesn't really matter: a different yarn or hook just makes it a different size.

Good to know Work your stitches tight, or the stuffing will peek out. Notice holes? Switch to a smaller hook. When you're going to sew a piece on, keep a long tail on it. Safety eyes and small parts can be a choking hazard for children under 3. For little ones, embroider the eyes instead.

Eyes now! Put the safety eyes in between round 14 and round 15, leaving 6 stitches between them, on the smoothest side (that's the face, the little jog where laps start belongs at the back). Check it from far away before you snap the backs on inside: after they click, they're there for good.

Push the filling in now, while the opening is still wide enough. Grab little tufts, start by tucking them into the far end, and keep at it until it feels solid and bouncy. Add a bit more before the final round. Your piece should come out looking stuffed, around 2.8 in (7 cm) tall and 3.5 in (8.8 cm) wide, and you'll leave an opening of 24 stitches.

When you're done, snip the yarn and leave a tail about the length of your hand. Put it on the yarn needle, pass it through the front loop of every one of the last stitches, then pull it tight, just like a drawstring bag, the hole closes up. If this piece will be sewn on, keep a long tail; if not, tuck it inside. All set! Your pineapple body is now a fully closed piece, stuffed firmly, and measures about 3.2 in (8.2 cm) tall and 3.2 in (8.2 cm) wide.

Now your foot should be an open piece that's around 0.9 in (2.2 cm) wide and 0.5 in (1.2 cm) long, plus a long yarn tail.

Want a toy nobody else has? Snap a picture of something you adore, your pet, a mug, or a treasured little figure. Crochet Pirate will design the toy and write up the pattern for you.

Putting the pineapple together Once every part is done, we can join them and see your pineapple come to life. 1

Attach the feet

Place the first one on the pineapple body at round 4, one on each side of the front. Hold the open edge flat against the pineapple body and pin it all round. Using the long tail, sew all the way around the edge: under one stitch of the foot, then under the pineapple body right next to it. Add a last bit of stuffing just before the gap closes. It should end up pointing straight out. Then do the same for the other one on the other side, mirrored.

2

Attach the inner dark leaves

They go on the pineapple body at round 23, spread evenly all the way round (the first one at the front, a little to the toy's left). Pin them all first so the gaps are even. For each one: hold the open edge flat against the pineapple body and pin it all round. Using the long tail, sew all the way around the edge: under one stitch of the inner dark leaf, then under the pineapple body right next to it. Add a last bit of stuffing just before the gap closes. It should end up pointing straight out.

7 / 10

3

Attach the outer pea leaves

They go on the pineapple body at round 20, spread evenly all the way round (the first one at the front, in the middle). Pin them all first so the gaps are even. For each one: hold the open edge flat against the pineapple body and pin it all round. Using the long tail, sew all the way around the edge: under one stitch of the outer pea leaf, then under the pineapple body right next to it. Add a last bit of stuffing just before the gap closes. It should end up pointing straight out.

5

Attach the center leaf

Place it on the pineapple body at round 24, at the front, in the middle. Pull the center leaf over the pineapple body like a hat so its edge sits on round 24 all the way round. Pin it evenly, then sew all around the edge: under one stitch of the center leaf, then under the pineapple body right next to it.

7

Sew the mouth

With dark chocolate yarn on the pineapple body, around round 13, at the front, in the middle. How: come up at one corner, go down 3 stitches along, then catch the middle of that long stitch and pull it down one round to make a curve.

4

Attach the low dark leaves

They go on the pineapple body at round 19, spread evenly round the back: the first one on the toy's left side, the last one on the toy's right side. Pin them all first so the gaps are even. For each one: hold the open edge flat against the pineapple body and pin it all round. Using the long tail, sew all the way around the edge: under one stitch of the low dark leaf, then under the pineapple body right next to it. Add a last bit of stuffing just before the gap closes. It should end up pointing straight out.

6

Sew the eye glints

With white yarn on the pineapple body, around round 14, one on each side of the front. How: one small stitch over the top of each eye, a little to its outer side, the eye shines.

8

Sew the cheeks

With pink yarn on the pineapple body, around round 13, one on each side of the front. How: 2 short stitches side by side make one cheek.

8 / 10

9

Sew the diamond lattice, low row

With orange yarn on the pineapple body, in these spots: around round 6, at the front, in the middle; around round 6, one on each side of the front; around round 6, one on each side; around round 6, one on each side, toward the back; around round 6, one on each side, toward the back. How: one stitch going diagonally over 2 stitches, then a second one crossing it the other way.

11

Sew the diamond lattice, third row

With orange yarn on the pineapple body, in these spots: around round 16, at the front, in the middle; around round 16, one on each side of the front; around round 16, one on each side; around round 16, one on each side, toward the back; around round 16, one on each side, toward the back. How: one stitch going diagonally over 2 stitches, then a second one crossing it the other way.

13 Hide the tails For every loose tail: thread it on the needle, poke it into the toy and out somewhere else, give it a little tug, and snip it close. The end disappears inside. All done!
