ISSUE 6 | 2023 CRJ SERVICES QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER

Director’s Message

Welcome to the sixth edition of Circular – CRJ Services quarterly newsletter, rounding up our latest news and developments.

CRJ continues to grow at a rapid rate increasing turnover by 41% in our year to March 2024 on the back of 32% growth the year before. Considering the economic environment that we are faced with this is a fantastic performance and is underpinned by some significant growth in our team.

After 15 years with CRJ, Terry Martin, our Workshop Foreman decided to retire in March. Terry was a major part of our team and his knowledge and experience will be missed. However, Tony Sheen who has been doing an excellent job as Team Leader and has been with the business for over 6 years has been promoted to Workshop Foreman and will lead the workshop team in the future. Also within Operations we have appointed Jim Oates as Engineering Manager to lead the team and will be supported by Rob Davis-Hilliard as Service Manager. Jim was a customer of ours in his role as Engineering Manager at Enva and has known us for many years which is a great testament in itself.

Our sales team is now being managed by Mike Symons who has been promoted to National Sales Manager – Waste & Recycling, reporting to Ben McQuaid and will be joined by two further Area Sales Managers in the coming quarter.

We have recognised the need to increase our focus on product knowledge and have appointed Joe Symons as Product Specialist, who will focus on providing specialist support and product training to the workshop and field service team. Its great to see that as we grow we are bringing in fresh talent but also recognising the talent we already have within the business and promoting within.

Another first, we installed our first Bruce Wash POD at Mayer Earthworks Ltd in March. This was a fantastic achievement on the back of obtaining the Bruce distributorship last year. We have several more in the pipeline and look forward to really building this brand in the UK.

We are seeing increased demand for more long term hires as customers see the need to retain cash within their business and recognise some of the benefits of “hire over buy”. This is something we predicted would happen as the recession hit and as such increased our fleet to accommodate the forecast demand. We will continue to increase our fleet in the coming year as we are not seeing any reduction in demand and our fleet utilisation remains high.

We are in the process of developing some key strategic partnerships which will increase the value of our offering to customers, more about this in our next issue of Circular.

Again a sincere thank you to our customers, suppliers and team members for your continued support and I’m sure we all look forward to building on the success we have achieved already.

Employee Showcase

Shiu Lau Apprentice Heavy Plant Mechanic

In this edition of our ‘Employee Showcase’, we highlight Shiu Lau our Apprentice Heavy Plant Mechanic here at CRJ Services.

Why did you want to join CRJ Services?

I could see that through the Apprenticeship Scheme, CRJ would provide me with experience on mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems which is what I wanted. I think CRJ provides the right career path for me and is a great stepping stone to advance my career to become a multiskilled engineer.

What is your favourite aspect of your role at CRJ?

I like to work on many types of machinery. I can also work on my own or as part of a team which is again what I wanted.

What is a fact about you that not many people would know?

I have a huge interest in trains and trucks ! I always have had this since being a child.

What is your favourite machine and why?

The HAAS Tyron 2000 slow speed shredder was my favourite. The remote control, used to control the machine is really simple to understand. The siren and the flashing lights when it moves are really cool. The Scania engine is the best part of the machine to work on. Overall the design of the machine is really good. How would you describe your team?

Everybody in CRJ has an important role to play. In the workshop we all work together to solve problems. We work to high standards and all get along with each other.

What do you consider the biggest change you have seen in your time at CRJ?

The biggest change for me during my apprenticeship is that I can

now work independently on some machines doing PDI checks and engine services on screeners and shredders.

What passions do you have outside of work?

I love Minecraft where you build your own world in a sandbox game. I also love HGV’s and have a simulator game called Euro Truck Simulator 2 where you can drive realistic HGV’s in a scripted world around England and Europe.

What’s your favourite book?

My cousin bought me a children’s encyclopaedia when I was young. I loved it and still do. I read it from cover to cover and sometimes refer to it now and again!

CRJ Services celebrates the 50th HAAS TYRON slow-speed

shredder to enter its hire fleet.

Following the sale of the 100th HAAS TYRON across the UK and Ireland in 2022, we have now reached the milestone of the 50th HAAS TYRON entering our hire fleet.

Our first HAAS TYRON was purchased back in 2012. Rob Symons –Director at CRJ Services comments – “We had experience of a few slow-speed shredders prior to purchasing our first HAAS. As our hire customers processed a range of different materials, a versatile machine was needed to cater to the different applications. We went with the TYRON for its strong performance and ease of maintenance.”

The HAAS TYRON proved a huge success for CRJ Services’ hire fleet, and by 2014 we were purchasing our 10th model.

As the HAAS TYRON enjoys continued success within the UK market, CRJ Services is in the unique position of being both a HAAS dealer and also the biggest HAAS customer in the UK. This allows us to offer unique services to the industry; such as hire-tobuy agreements and the ability to supply like for like machines as part

of our ‘Swing Program’ (meaning minimal disruption when the hired shredder is due to be hard-faced).

Rene Perne – UK Sales Manager at HAAS Recycling Systems states:

“CRJ Services has been a great advocate of the HAAS brand, for many years, even before becoming our UK dealer. This milestone highlights their commitment to HAAS, and the great relationship we have built over the years.”

The 50th HAAS was sent straight out on hire to Biffa Tipton, a long-term hire customer of CRJ Services.

Jockey, Barry McHugh

How is your season going so far?

It has been a slow start, but things are starting to pick up now. Hopefully plenty more winners to come in the near future.

What does the CRJ sponsorship mean to you?

I really appreciate the sponsorship and know a couple of the lads very well. The support that CRJ gives to various sports of both genders and all ages is well known and I’m

very proud to be part of this. I follow CRJ’s continued success and it’s great to see too.

Tell us about your most exciting race?

I’ve had a few exciting races over the years. Winning the dash at Epsom on derby day aboard Tees Spirit last year would definitely be up there. It was brilliant to ride a winner for my good friend Adrian Nicholls on derby day!

The Bruce WashPod is the right fit for Mayer Earthworks Ltd

Mayer Earthworks Ltd, a groundworks specialist based in Staffordshire, has expanded its material processing capabilities with the purchase of a Bruce WashPod from CRJ Services Ltd.

Bruce Engineering Ltd developed the WashPod to meet the demand of a subsector of the aggregate recycling industry that want to wash secondary recycled materials but with limited space on-site in which to do so.

The WashPod purchased by Mayer Earthworks is processing sub-40mm grab-away material, a by-product of its groundwork services. The raw material is screened with a deck screener, with the sub-40mm being fed into the WashPod Hopper. Following the scrubbing, trash removal, and rinsing process, clean 10mm, 20mm, 25-40mm aggregate

products and a single coarse sand product are outputted, suitable for sale in the construction industry.

The compact design of the WashPod makes it the smallest complete wash plant on the market. Significantly reduced install, dismantling and relocation times make the WashPod the machine of choice for operators who have a requirement to campaign wash at multiple sites or those involved in contract washing. As Bruce Engineering is a certified Hardox wear parts centre, the build quality of the WashPod is robust and market-leading, ensuring longevity, with other branded components used throughout.

“By investing in a C&D wash plant, we are now capable of diverting up to 250,000 tons of waste, per year from landfill. This will also reduce strain on our natural aggregates in quarries by re-selling the material into the local construction industry. We decided to close the deal with Rob from CRJ Services, after going to look at a Bruce machine in Scotland. It was clear that this was the machine for us; well built, good throughput and an enthusiastic, knowledgeable team in Bruce who have been first class. Rob and CRJ have been very supportive and pragmatic in the whole process and I cannot thank or recommend them highly enough!”

Reliability is key at Enva Wood Recyclers, Tilbury

Enva Wood Recyclers in Tilbury process vast quantities of waste wood, which is then either recycled into over 20 sustainable, saleable products such as wood fibre bedding, or it is sent to biomass facilities as fuel.

As a small site that processes big tonnage, Tilbury provides a challenge for Enva as machine reliability is critical. Furthermore, being based on Tilbury docks, any delays in processing can lead to delays in the boats leaving. This can incur big fines, so time is of the essence and everything has to run like clockwork.

After consulting with CRJ Services, Enva chose the HAAS 2000 XL 2.0 for their Tilbury site, their 3rd HAAS

Tyron at Tilbury to date, and their 5th Haas within the Enva Wood Recyclers group.

HAAS shredders have an excellent reliability record and, together with CRJ’s industry leading service levels, ensures that Enva have maximum uptime throughout the machine’s life.

Enva bought their first HAAS from CRJ Services in 2015 and this purchase takes them up to a total of 5 machines.

CRJ Donates Sports Kit to Madaraka Primary School

We have had the absolute pleasure of donating a sports pack to Madaraka Primary School in Nairobi - Kenya

Through an initiative run by Multiflex School Sports, we have donated a sports pack including 20 footballs, 50 cones, 30 bibs and pop-up goals. Multiflex Director Jack Rea commented “Madaraka Primary is in a slum area near Nakuru Town, the school is in a really challenging area so I know the pupils who are age 5 to 13 will really appreciate your donation.”

Throughout February, Multiflex School Sports visited a number of schools in Kenya to deliver a sports program, and then left the pack with the school for them to continue enjoying.

It is such a great initiative, and we are so pleased to have the opportunity to get involved.
