Walking through Cristo Rey Jesuit High School the week of March 9th, one could see numerous examples of greatness in our community: • In classrooms, students prepared to take their Advanced Placement tests to earn college credits.

• The Ignite Team, our Senior faith leaders who lead our school retreats, Masses, and prayer services, diligently prepared to lead the Senior Kairos Retreat (three days, two nights retreat).

• And on Tuesday, March 10th, we confirmed that each senior was accepted to at least one college (with 92% to a 4 year college—the highest ever). Amongst the many seniors earning full-ride or full-tuition scholarships, four seniors were selected as the inaugural Dryer Scholars at the College of St. Benedict & Saint John’s University.

Despite the building being shuttered the next week due to COVID-19, we were able to experience an even greater level of excellence from our community. Our faculty, staff, CWSP team, students and parents, amazingly shifted to an online school in 36 hours. This herculean feat was accelerated by the tremendous response from corporate partners and benefactors who met the need by donating computers for individual student use, funds for hotspots to provide access to the internet, and food for families who found themselves unemployed.

On Memorial Day weekend, a little over a mile from our school, George Floyd was killed in the custody of police. The protesting that followed was overcome by rioters who decimated our neighborhood through the looting and burning of the businesses along Lake Street. Amazingly, the only physical damage to our building was four smashed windows.

These events demonstrated the need for Cristo Rey. Parents and families choose Cristo Rey Jesuit as a pathway of success for their children. Each seeks life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness through a college and career preparatory education in the Jesuit tradition.

From our students, parents, faculty and staff, we offer a heartfelt thank you to all that offered such generous emergency support.

I credit Cristo Rey Jesuit High School’s Corporate Work Study Program for influencing my career choice. For the four years I was at Cristo Rey, I worked at UnitedHealth Group. Being exposed to human resources at a young age really

Besides job skills, I was introduced to the American corporate culture that was predominantly white. Being a person of color, being exposed to that for four years, really set me up for success for when I was looking for a career post-college.

I’m proud to be a Cristo Rey alumni and a first-generation college graduate.

Being a college graduate is something that I’d never thought I would achieve because no one else in my family had gone to college. I have become a support system to them, and it has very much made me feel like I can make a difference in someone else’s life.

Our Corporate Partners Students earn half the cost of their education through our Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP), while also being exposed to a corporate work environment and positive influences of supervising professionals. In exchange, employers that participate in CWSP receive high quality, cost-effective workers and get to play an active role in students’ future success.

Cristo Rey stood out to me as a different type of school. I actually moved from Illinois to Minnesota, just to go to Cristo Rey. The first day entering the building you realize that you’re cared for, and that you’re valued, and that you’re loved. The staff and the teachers are incomparable. I was met with love

every single time I made a mistake by staff.

That itself in Cristo Rey changed my life, besides the working component.

The Corporate Work Study Program opened my mind to how my future could be impacted for the rest of my life. I could be a professional. At that time, I had no idea what a professional was at all! I thought that I was going to go to a community college or join the National Guard, that’s it. Cristo Rey stood alongside of us, so we could be the best version of ourselves.

Just by them kind of instilling that into us, it changed my entire life. I realized my life is worth developing. My life is worth figuring out, as well as the path I want to go on.

I never want to see Cristo Rey disappear.

I pray this every day for our communities, so that Cristo Rey students can have all the resources that they deserve, as well as everything they don’t even know they deserve yet.

2020 Graduation Ceremony: A socially-distanced graduate parade!

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School hosted a drive-thru, socially-distanced graduation ceremony on June 6, 2020, with faculty and staff cheering on the seniors’ accomplishments from our balcony.

The drive-thru ceremony had a parade-like feel.

For many, it was the first time they had seen school staff or their classmates since the coronavirus shutdown began in March.

Students emerged from their families’ cars, often decorated with balloons and stickers, one at a time in a cap and gown to receive a diploma.

The quote ‘me puse las pilas’ is a phrase that in English literally translates to ‘I put the batteries on myself’, in other words—applying one’s full potential to focus and graduate.

Staff wearing masks and disposable gloves handed diplomas to graduating seniors. To follow social distancing guidelines, students came one at a time and were split between two different diploma stations.

Teachers and staff lined up along the rooftop of the school. Their view from the opposite side of the building included a burnt down AutoZone—a relic of the destruction that followed the death of George Floyd.

Cristo Rey sustained a few broken windows during the resulting unrest. Staff boarded them up in advance of the graduation ceremony.

All 124 seniors were accepted to college, and many were first in their families to graduate from high school and be accepted into college.

We are the change…

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic and George Floyd killing When COVID-19 closed schools and businesses back in March, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School responded to the significant challenges. We quickly shifted to remote learning for our students and established an emergency fund to help provide many of our families with food and other critical essentials. We continue to serve students and their families as their struggles continue through the pandemic. The killing of George Floyd sparked massive unrest throughout South Minneapolis, where many of our families live and work. Our school stands in the epicenter of much of the destruction, and thankfully, only sustained minor damage.

Families choose Cristo Rey because it is a pathway through systemic barriers to success. Our mission to provide a high-quality college and career preparatory education is needed now more than ever. We are a proven solution to upending systemic injustice in the Twin Cities. We are preparing the future leaders of Minneapolis and St. Paul to transform our communities.

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Receives $1.7 Million Gift for Ken Melrose Technology Lab

U.S. Bank Receives Inaugural Pathway to Success Award

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is the proud recipient of a $1.7M gift from former Toro CEO and chairman Ken Melrose, who passed away in May 2020.

Since being hired full time, graduate Carmen Saldivar-Montano ‘16 (shown at left with Cristo Rey students Jasmin H. and Jersain S.C.) has already received a promotion, and was recently named a Legends of Possible recipient for 2019, an award presented annually to the top performing employees across U.S. Bank.

The contribution will fund a state-of-the-art technology lab. Construction on the lab began on Monday, August 31, 2020.

The Ken Melrose Technology Lab will allow Cristo Rey Jesuit students to develop skills in coding, CAD, circuitry, and audio/visual editing through the use of high-tech equipment such as laser cutters, CNC routers, 3D printers, drones, robots, video and photography software, and other industry-related equipment. This will maximize students’ preparation for work study positions and future careers.

Cristo Rey Network graduates earn college degrees at three times the national average for similar demographics. Our students then enter the workforce adding value to companies around the Twin Cities.

Our fully-equipped Technology Lab will prepare Cristo Rey students for higher skilled in-demand jobs. The addition of technical skills training to our curriculum will help to meet the increase in industry demand for software developers, analysts, and employees in computer and IT roles.

The Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Pathway to Success Award was created in 2020 to recognize corporate partners who are transforming the Twin Cities business community by providing a pathway to success for our students and graduates.
