In reflecting on the year gone by, I think of the power of potential and the gratitude I have for all of you, our committed supporters, who provide the catalyst for our students to achieve their God-given potential. Our theme last year centered around the Ignatian ideal of “ﬁnding God in all things.” We ﬁnd God in the potential that exists in all facets of the Cristo Rey community.

In all of the preceding descriptors, the word that often accompanies potential is “yet.” Students in physics learn about potential energy, which is the principle of stored energy. Energy and potential exist, and they just need to be exposed to the right environment to transform into reality.

Potential means a variety of things depending on the context.

Because of you, our dedicated faculty and staﬀ are able to provide the environment where our students access academic and career preparatory experiences where their “yet” becomes reality.

• Our admissions team talks about potential in terms of students who have yet to enroll in our community. • The development team talks about potential in terms of donors who have yet to invest in our mission. • Faculty talk about potential as the academic concept that has yet to be mastered. • Our sports teams reference potential as the game that has yet to be won. • The Corporate Work Study team talks about potential in terms of an opportunity that has yet to be realized. • College success talks about potential as a pathway that has yet to provide transformational change and options.

Students work one day a week earning 43% of the cost of their education which provides access to a private, Catholic education. With a 100% graduation and college acceptance rate, this creates a highly educated pipeline of diverse talent.

Mason Moses (’23) Becomes Cristo Rey’s First Gates Scholar A little Nintendo box and love for Super Mario video games helped spark young Mason’s technology interest as a child in his North Minneapolis home. “I have always been technology driven ever since I was a little kid. My mom introduced me to video games; Mario and Sonic games. Growing up that was just my safe space.” Today, the world of robotics, software engineering, and and AI describe Mason Moses’ (’23) true passion as he pursues an engineering degree at Carlton College. He credits the opportunities at Cristo Rey for playing a part of the journey including ﬁnding like-minded peers in the robotics club where he became the lead programmer. Cristo Rey’s committed College Success counselors and volunteers helped Mason apply for multiple scholarships. Now Mason pursues his educational plans at no cost, all four years, as he is a recipient of the prestigious Gates Scholarship where only 300 scholars were awarded out of 51,000 applicants. “Growing up, it was rough not having enough resources and opportunities available for me (but) going to Cristo Rey, I was able to ﬁnd out my passion and my calling in life.”

Monse’s (’23) Graduation Means Following Family For Monserrat (’23), earning the Cristo Rey diploma meant following in her sisters' footsteps. Although no less celebratory, her parents had seen this before when sisters Ivet graduated in 2017, and Marlenne graduated in 2021. The tradition continues as Cristo Rey sophomore and little brother Jonathan continues his academic and career-focused education at Cristo Rey, on track for the fourth in the family to become a proud Cristo Rey alumni.

Rachel Ziegler: Finding Equilibrium in her Chemistry and Theology Classrooms New Cristo Rey chemistry students might do a double-take when seeing second-year teacher, Rachel Ziegler, also teaching their theology class. What might seem to be a clash of science and religion is a harmonic exploration of subjects for Rachel. “I think students can see in me that these are not opposing topics. They can learn and be interested in both. They’re focusing on different parts of God’s handiwork.” Rachel’s path from St. Benedict’s for a BA in Biology, to four years in the classroom through Teach for America, to Notre Dame for her Master of Theological Studies was the perfect route to prepare her for Cristo Rey. Today, she uses both the beakers and the Bible to give students a rounded education. “I love that we have great students. I mean, there’s great students everywhere, but Cristo Rey really helps to bring out the potential in each individual and gives them opportunities to rise. I have a tenth grader who, I think, could have gotten lost in the cracks had she been attending another school. But she asks great questions and with intentional focus I can see her continuing to thrive and improve in a way that might not happen somewhere else.” Just as Cristo Rey is the ideal fit for over four hundred students who walk the halls every day, Rachel is grateful that both of her fields of expertise are fit into her job description. “How is it possible that there is a need for a science and theology teacher right when I was looking for a job? I see God working in that.”

The Tourville Family Foundation renews support for Cristo Rey Within a few short years, Teresa and Becca Tourville have made impactful contributions to the Minneapolis community. In 2020, the mother-daughter duo helped establish the Tourville Family Foundation, a year when COVID-19 revealed the vast and varied needs in the community. From homelessness, food insecurity, or veterans support, the family set its sights on supporting dozens of local non-proﬁts each year. However, their commitment to education remains at the forefront of their philanthropic mission. Becca spoke about her father's personal experience, where the opportunity to attend a private high school had a profound impact on his life. “My dad (Karl) went from Incarnation to parochial high school, which he attributes much of his success. It provided a strong education before continuing his education at the University of Saint Thomas. He started his career soon after, which took him all the way through retirement in 2019. So this is one of his passions, to give students in the Minneapolis area a similar opportunity.” This year, Cristo Rey is grateful that the Tourville Family Foundation has increased their commitment to the students’ successes and experiences. “We love how diﬀerent you are,” said Teresa. “The Corporate Work Study Program is so unique and gives the students a great opportunity to be out in the real world every week to get work experience and build a strong work ethic. We had never heard of any other school doing that.” “At a Lunch and Learn, we listened to some of the students talk about their experience. Many said it felt like one big family. They felt like they belonged. In public school, some kids are getting lost in the cracks, but (at Cristo Rey) the issues are discovered and dealt with,” said Becca. “We're really blessed that we can partner with Cristo Rey because we see the success that you have; that’s our success as well,” said Teresa. “It feels good to know that these kids’ lives are going to be changed.”

Transformational Gift Allows Cristo Rey to Build a New Third-Floor Expansion Beginning in June of 2024, Cristo Rey will begin transforming a portion of our third floor into a much needed 5,100+ finished square foot cafeteria and kitchen. The space has enough seating for 345 students and will include a bistro-style kitchen with two servery locations, a nutrition office, and overflow areas.
