Dear Friends of Cristo Rey, As we closed our eleventh year of nurturing and challenging our students, we did so by graduating the largest class to ever walk the halls of Cristo Rey Philadelphia – and the first to spend their entire high school career at our campus at 1717 W. Allegheny Avenue.

When we began the 2022-2023 school year, we focused on our theme: With Pride, With Purpose. We committed to fostering a sense of pride in every facet of the community we have built and we committed to a purpose of growing Cristo Rey’s impact in the Greater Philadelphia region. While reading through these pages, I hope you gain a better understanding of how our model of high expectations and high support fuels our students’ purpose. Our curricula, our Work-Study Program, and our extracurricular activities call our students to recognize and realize their full potential. They take great pride in their personal and communal pursuit of excellence.

When I walk through the halls each day, I witness the focus with which our young people move. Whether they are heading to class or work, our students are embracing each day living out the values of our Blue Pride Community.

They Believe, Dream, Lead, and Serve with maturity beyond their years and will ultimately be the change our world needs.

The old adage says, “It takes a village.” I am fortunate to work alongside incredible, talented individuals who are furthering our mission across the Greater Philadelphia area – from our faculty and staff to our Work-Study supervisors to our Board of Trustees and donors. Without your generous support, we would not be able to make the magic of Cristo Rey possible for our students. For that, I am forever grateful.

INNOVATING IN ACADEMICS: INTEGRATED MATH We are committed to preparing our students for college and beyond. We are constantly striving to improve the curriculum and instruction we provide to our young people, so that our students will enter college with the knowledge necessary to succeed.

One academic area to receive a recent curriculum renewal is mathematics. The Class of 2024 will be the first graduating class to fully participate in the Integrated Math sequence here at Cristo Rey Philadelphia.

Integrated Math challenges students to apply theory to real world situations, preparing them with skills that they can use beyond these four walls. We are already seeing growth and will continue to monitor our results through MAP Testing, PSAT, and SAT scores.

In 2018, the Cristo Rey Network partnered with The Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative (SVMI) to improve classroom instruction, resulting in increased achievement for all students, and to empower a young person’s approach to problem solving. This unique program provides professional development for our educators to instill cutting-edge teaching methods for curriculum delivery. In the classroom, SVMI programming invites students to engage in math, as opposed to just simply solving problems.

PATHWAYS TO AND THROUGH: COLLEGE & CAREER COUNSELING We support students while setting them on the path to higher education. Juniors and seniors attend College & Career Counseling Class each week, where they are guided through building their college lists, completing the application process, writing their college essays, applying for scholarships and financial aid, and exploring future career paths. Speakers from various industries visit frequently to share their own educational and career paths, so that students can connect the dots between their own academic interests and their future careers. Exposure to the wide world of college experiences happens in and out of the classroom. Our well-connected team of counselors coordinate classroom visits from college and university representatives, as well as trips to explore campuses.

Our College & Career Counseling team stresses the importance of participating in experiences that can spark new interests outside of what is familiar to our young people. Sixty percent of the Class of 2024 participated in a summer program, including study abroad experiences spanning three continents.

The achievements of our young people are tremendous and are showcased in the following pages.

CYNTHIA IN PARIS: SUMMER STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE

Cynthia Ouedraogo ‘24 called Paris, France home for a month with CIEE this summer.

She participated in a French class that required previous knowledge of the French language, which she speaks at home with her family.

She spent her mornings in the classroom and afternoons working with the local community and exploring the City of Light, all while earning college credits through Tulane University.

Cynthia learned a tremendous amount about the French language and culture, but more importantly, she realized that she is more than capable of taking on a new, unfamiliar experience, head-on.

“Some things I learned about myself are that I am more independent than I thought and I am a bit introverted.

Living in another country made me realize that I am more than capable of taking care of myself and managing my life without someone there to take care of me. I loved going out every day with friends and trying something new, but I also realized that I appreciate my alone time.”

FUTURE LEADERS OF OUR CITY: WORK-STUDY PROGRAM Our Work-Study Job Partners help us develop the City of Philadelphia’s future workforce.

Students receive a level of career exposure at their job sites that is unprecedented for teenagers across the region. Learning the skills to be a young professional during their high school years better prepares them to walk with pride and purpose when they leave Cristo Rey, go to college, and later pursue their careers.

DEVELOPING THE FUTURE WORKFORCE Talent Acquisition Partner Nahiem Rodriguez (pictured, top left) supervises our student workers at Main Line Health, a long-time Job Partner. Nahiem was approached during his second year at Main Line Health about overseeing the Cristo Rey Work-Study Program.

“We were looking to make the program a pipeline for future Main Line Health employees. This is something that we had felt we had an opportunity to grow and develop,” he explains.

Seeing and understanding the long-term value of mentoring young people and providing them with pre-college career exposure, Nahiem was quick to take on the task – not unlike our young professionals at work.

Main Line Health’s goal is to help our students understand the many career paths available to them in healthcare. Collaborating with supervisors across the corporate office, Bryn Mawr Hospital, and Lankenau Hospital, Main Line Health has developed a program that allows the wide-eyed curiosity of our young people to thrive.

Nahiem regularly asks himself, “How do we empower our students to step outside their comfort zones, so that we can help lead them to their eventual careers?”

Main Line Health has perfected the manner in which they learn from our students. This past year, they paired our young people with Job Coaches who could help them grow their professional skills. While rotating through different departments, students shadow team members in fields they’re interested in pursuing as a career. The Main Line Health team regularly solicits our students’ feedback and takes great pride in providing an excellent Work-Study experience for our young people.

FOSTERING GROWTH FOR FUTURE SUCCESS FMC Corporation is creating a workplace environment where our young people can thrive.

Lisa Latorre’s 24 years at FMC have found her in a myriad of roles. Today, she serves as a Global R&D Scientist in the Contract Research Management Group supporting scientists and placing studies at contract labs. She is also part of the LatinX Employee Resource Group, which provides a welcoming space for FMC employees, but most importantly, she is the Work-Study Supervisor for Andre Bell ‘26. On a normal workday, Andre takes the school bus to City Hall and hops on a train to 30th Street Station. He then walks with his fellow student-workers to FMC Tower and checks in at his desk for his weekly tasks.

Andre began his time at FMC as a freshman and is returning for his sophomore year.

Lisa says she’d have him back every year if possible, and Andre appreciates Lisa’s encouragement and mentorship. He believes that his time at FMC has provided him with the opportunity to learn about STEM and business, and he expects to learn more during his 2023-2024 placement with the company.

Below is an excerpt from a conversation between Lisa and Andre about how Lisa empowers and inspires Andre to own not only his projects, but also his growth...

Andre: Why did you become a Work-Study Supervisor?

Well, this is an interesting story. I had just become the co-chair of the LatinX Employee Resources Group and some of my colleagues had recently highlighted the Cristo Rey Work-Study Program. They knew we needed some extra hands and suggested we get some students to help us out. Prior to that, I didn’t have much knowledge about the program, but once I got to know the program at Supervisor Orientation, I began to understand the benefits to the students. Personally speaking, I’m an advocate for education, in general, but especially for obtaining a higher education, so it was right up my alley to become a supervisor.

Lisa: Why did you choose Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School?

Of all the schools that I applied to, Cristo Rey Philadelphia was the only school that had a Work-Study Program and I wanted to see what that was like, because it was so different. I also chose Cristo Rey because of the extracurriculars and sports. They provide students with a lot of options and give us the opportunity to make connections while participating.

Andre: What have you learned about engaging young people, like myself, in the workforce?

I find engaging young people as an opportunity for me to be a supervisor, but also an opportunity for you to see what this company is like. Because I’ve worked at FMC for so many years, I can be a good resource for you regarding what it’s like to work for the corporation, but I’ve also learned a lot about engaging young people.

You provide creativity and new, fresh energy on your assigned workday and it has changed the dynamics of the company.

Lisa: What skills do you believe you’ve gained over the last two years?

I’ve gained communication skills. I’ve learned to speak up when I have to and ask for help when I’ve been afraid to do so in the past. I’ve learned more about organization skills and how to implement them. I’ve also gained skills on how to operate in a professional workspace, thanks to your support.

Andre: What is your favorite part about this partnership between Cristo Rey and FMC? My favorite part is having Cristo Rey students in the building and helping our local community. Having this partnership with Cristo Rey’s Work-Study Program, and being a part of it here at FMC, is giving incredible access to our young people. Hopefully it forms life-long mentors and people the students can tap into, as they pursue higher education and their careers.

With FMC being a global company, there is a lot to learn and that provides our young people with a lot of options.

OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM: STUDENT LIFE Student Life at Cristo Rey Philadelphia encompasses everything student-facing outside of the classroom. By providing a robust lineup of extracurriculars and resources for both students and families, we are able to use a holistic approach to the wraparound care and intentional development of our students.

Our Athletics Department is winning championships and competing across 17 sports and 21 teams. To be a part of Blue Pride is to show dedication to one’s craft and commitment to their community of teammates.

Campus Ministry works with 25 Campus Ministry Student Leaders to provide 28 retreats for both students and families so that spiritual journeys can be fostered.

The Counseling Department has QR codes posted in every classroom and office around campus to make counseling accessible for all. Our students have the opportunity to meet with licensed and caring counselors who can assist with whatever they may need.

Student Engagement provides students with Grad @ Grad experiences to complement their education and cultivates community across all grade levels through the House initiative, Cristo Rey’s version of homeroom.

New for the 2023-2024 school year, Student & Family Services will seek to better support our students and engage our families so we can strengthen our “village” approach.

Cultivating a Love of God, of Self, and of Others The Cristo Rey Campus Ministry Team invites students to seek out what leadership and faith mean to them. Each year, students can submit applications to become Campus Ministry Student Leaders (CMSLs). CMSLs work to inspire and ignite curiosity for faith on a daily basis, during Prayer Services, and most importantly, when their classmates are participating in retreats.

Retreats at Cristo Rey Philadelphia are led by students, for students. They give moments for pause. They give moments for reflection, for prayer, for empowerment, for insight, for community. They provide enlightenment for students and leaders alike.

It is incredibly powerful for students to have a space to experience personal transformation and growth, because they practice bravery when they feel comfortable. Having CMSLs partner with our Campus Ministry Team allows for conversations and reflections amongst our student body to be more impactful, because the experience is curated with our students and their stories in mind. Retreats are a cornerstone of the Cristo Rey experience, and they allow our students to recognize and realize their full potential.

AN EXTENSION OF OUR MISSION: HORIZONS AT CRISTO REY Horizons at Cristo Rey transforms our campus into a safe haven for the youngest residents of our Nicetown-Tioga neighborhood.

This past year, 62 participants joined us for programming and so much magic. Every day, our young people walked up the steps of 1717 W. Allegheny Avenue and entered into a space of learning, growth, and support. Learning took place in the classrooms and the STEM lab.

Growth took place in the swimming pool, on the golf course, and on the athletic field.

In addition to the support of two licensed School Counselors, opportunities for social and 19

emotional learning were around every corner and in every classroom. At Horizons at Cristo Rey, there is no shortage of opportunities for our young people to be their best selves.

An extension of the Cristo Rey Philadelphia High School mission, Horizons at Cristo Rey approaches the care of our young people with purpose. We are committed to improving the experience for our children, year after year. Programming will continue through the 2023-2024 school year for these youngsters and our campus will always be a welcoming and enriching environment for them.
