Letter from the President December 2020 Dear Cristo Rey Family, We have become “The School that Works”, and we are proud of that, but we are anything but complacent. Our community is restless, never satisfied, constantly searching for ways to do things better. That attitude can be unsettling to those who crave routine and certainty, but for most in our community, it’s the way we like to roll. Innovation is a hallmark of our culture. Our faculty and staff sign on at Cristo Rey with a mandate to build, to invent, to make things better. We are not afraid when the world changes and we are not afraid to change ourselves. We value creativity and ambition and drive. And that’s why a culture of innovation permeates our entire community. This Impact Report is about innovation. It’s packed with examples that demonstrate our eagerness to change, to get better, to do more and to strive for the “magis”. A culture of innovation is driven by innovators. So, I want to introduce you to a few Cristo Rey Philadelphia innovators (pictured above, in order, from left to right): Felecia Russell, Director of College and Career Counseling, is expanding our support for Cristo Rey graduates by focusing on post-college careers, in addition to college graduation. Her support will begin with career counseling for 9th graders and extend until our graduates embark on careers after college graduation. Keshema Davidson, Manager of Community Affairs, has designed, built and launched a fully funded health clinic in the school that will offer physical and mental health services to all of our students. She is also planning to launch a summer academic program for elementary school students in our Tioga neighborhood.

Joanna Wusinich, Esq., Director of Work-Study, has led a team of Cristo Rey and Job Partner collaborators to redesign job skill training and even the actual work that our students are doing in order to prepare them better for “the jobs of the future”. Tammi Crummy, Co-Founder of our Parent Teacher Organization, brings parents and teachers and staff together to regularly collaborate on how to serve our students better. Kyle Sample, our new Director of Athletics, is working to grow our athletics programs by adding more competitive teams and intramural sports for Cristo Rey students. He is also planning community athletic programs for youth and recreational programs for people of all ages in our Tioga neighborhood. Fahv Jimenez, Chief Technology Officer, has designed and launched super-creative and invaluable information tools for academics, admissions, fundraising and other functions. Example: our teachers and counselors now have early warning notices when students show signs of falling behind. Mia Velez, one of many Cristo Rey student innovators, is President of the Latinx Student Organization, and currently serves on the Mayor’s Youth Commission for the City of Philadelphia. These innovators, and many others in our community, are leading the way to bright futures for Cristo Rey students and for our school. All of us at Cristo Rey are always mindful that our loyal supporters are the enablers of the miracle of Cristo Rey and we are forever grateful for your support. Sincerely,

John R. McConnell Founder and President 4

INNOVATING IN

HOLISTIC EDUCATION COUNSELING AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT Cristo Rey Philadelphia believes in a holistic approach to education called cura personalis or “care for the whole person.” We offer a robust Counseling and Academic Support Program, which provides students with unique, individualized support to help them reach their full potential. Our student to counselor ratio is 110 to 1, far exceeding the recommended ratio of 250 to 1 by the American School Counselor Association. With data integration and analysis in Salesforce and Tableau, our counselors are now able to identify students in need of support faster than ever. The data illustrates a detailed snapshot of each student’s areas for growth so that counselors can formulate a research-based support plan in collaboration with grade-level faculty, deans and college counselors, ensuring each student can be successful inside and outside of the classroom. When learning moved from in-person to virtual, this data became essential in monitoring student performance. Virtual learning did not slow down the Counseling and Academic Support team. Student counselor meetings per day nearly doubled and 7

our counselors have utilized Zoom breakout rooms to provide intentional, individualized coaching in Academic Support. Through continued data analysis and implementation of stronger communication methods with students and families, our team has sustained an excellent Counseling and Academic Support Program, supporting students through these challenging times.

THE HEALTH CLINIC Cristo Rey Philadelphia has partnered with Greater Philadelphia Health Action, Inc. (GPHA) to provide medical and dental services to students, free of charge, at an in-school health clinic, becoming one of GPHA’s 11 community health centers that together, serve over 87,000 residents in Philadelphia. While students are learning virtually, they have access to the health clinic’s telehealth services. The clinic is planned to open in-person in Winter 2020, and it will offer a multitude of services to our students, including annual physical exams, dental screenings, immunizations, sick visits, asthma management, and sports physicals. By offering these services to our students, Cristo Rey Philadelphia is increasing access to essential health services, improving the educational experience of our student body, and fostering an environment of wellness and learning. 8

INNOVATING FOR

JOBS OF THE FUTURE Cristo Rey Philadelphia has adapted the Work-Study Program to ensure students can continue to receive corporate work experience in a virtual environment. The Work-Study team has designed its unique Remote Work Program, in which students are working as consultants for corporate partners and offering a diverse, young, and researched perspective on four issues companies currently face: Diversifying the Talent Pipeline, Connectivity and Culture in a Remote Work World, Wellness in the Workplace, and Working with Millennials and Gen Z. Each company has chosen one key initiative for their student employees to research and analyze. The project will culminate in a professional presentation to executives of our corporate partners. In addition to providing valuable insights to companies, through the consultancy project, students are developing essential skills for the corporate world of today and tomorrow: data analytics, problem solving, virtual teamwork, critical thinking, and research and analysis skills.

INNOVATING IN

COLLEGE AND CAREER PATHWAYS Since opening, it has been Cristo Rey Philadelphia’s goal to provide the resources and tools that our students need to prepare for, matriculate to and persist through college. This past spring, our mission came full circle as we celebrated our first college graduates from the founding Class of 2016. As our alumni have entered the workforce, we have identified new ways to continue to improve our program based on their feedback. In 2020, Cristo Rey Philadelphia expanded the College Counseling program to include career exploration. Now as College and Career Counseling, the new curriculum will help our students expand their knowledge of career options and the steps needed to pursue the career of their choice. College and Career Counseling is also collaborating with Work-Study to provide a networking program with corporate partners that will expand college internship and career opportunities for alumni. This new focus will help advance our mission of helping students realize their full potential and better prepare them for their future careers in the workforce. 11

ADERS ARE HERE TAYLOR ROADCLOUD, Temple ‘20

ISAIAH GABRIEL, Villanova ‘20

“In five years, I hope to have furthered my education in entrepreneurship. I want to help small businesses with marketing and social media, and to run my own business one day.”

“In five years, I see myself as a leading voice, as an epidemiologist, on improving overall health through meaningful interventions and research of those who are a part of vulnerable populations in our society.”

In the Summer of 2020, Taylor started full-time as an Account Executive at J.G. Wentworth after graduating with a B.B.A. in Marketing from the Fox School of Business at Temple University. While at Temple, Taylor received invaluable business experience interning at Temple’s Credit and Collections Office, CFO and Treasury Office and Athletics Marketing Team.

Isaiah is pursuing his MPH in Epidemiology at Temple University after receiving his B.A. in Global Interdisciplinary Studies in 2020 from Villanova University. He was first introduced to the field of public health while taking a seminar course on global health inequalities. While studying abroad in Gaborone, Botswana, he witnessed the existing health disparities first-hand and was inspired to become an agent of change for communities around the globe facing this issue.

Through networking with other Cristo Rey alumni, she heard about the job opening at J.G. Wentworth, a current company partner in Cristo Rey’s Work-Study Program — a program to which Taylor credits her networking and professional skills. At J.G. Wentworth, Taylor is practicing her creative communication skills, customer service skills, and learning how to build and maintain a book of business. She hopes this experience learning on the job will better prepare her for her dream of opening her own business one day.

Isaiah says the sense of community he felt at Cristo Rey shaped him into who he is today, finding great value in fostering community and caring for others. His goals are to visit every country in Africa, leave a positive impact on others through action, encourage others to care about the world and the people in it, and lead a life full of continual growth. 14

HELP US

BRIDGE THE GAP This school year, Cristo Rey is faced with fiscal challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Work-Study Program revenue accounts for approximately 50% of the cost of each student’s education. However, some of our Work-Study partners face their own challenges and have been unable to commit to the program this year. At the same time, our country is grappling with inequities that have disadvantaged communities of color – like our students and families – for generations. Cristo Rey is a proven solution to the educational inequities in our country. Students from Cristo Rey schools across the nation are two times more likely to complete a bachelor’s degree by age 24 compared to the total U.S. low-income population. Please help us bridge the gap between the money students earn at their job, what a family contributes, and the cost of a top-quality Cristo Rey education. Make your impact today at cristoreyphiladelphia.org/giving or via the enclosed remittance envelope.
