Catholic… College-ready… Career-prepared… In the tradition of exceptional Catholic college preparatory high school education integrated with our entrepreneurial Corporate Work Study Program, our network of 37 schools now serves 12,230 motivated students. Through the efforts of many, we continue to build on the innovative thinking of one school that opened its doors 23 years ago. Prioritizing rigorous academic opportunity and relevant work-based learning affords every student the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills for meaningful careers. But none of this would be possible without our many collaborators across the nation: students and their families, Corporate Partners, investors and benefactors, University Partners, Religious Sponsors, and alumni. With a spirit of continuous improvement to advance this groundbreaking work and prepare every student for college and career, we remain so very grateful to each of you for your partnership.

REFLECTIONS FROM CHAIR EMERITUS I keep waiting for the Cristo Rey movement to show signs of slowing down—but it doesn’t happen! More people keep asking for a Cristo Rey school in their city. As someone once said, it calls for us to get on our knees and recognize that there is something sacred at work. The Cristo Rey movement is more than the sum of the parts. It’s an example of how God is at work saving us here and now, and we acknowledge that awesome fact! All of us involved in this movement have to humbly recognize that we are God’s instruments in remaking a broken world. That is a real act of faith! The fact that our baptism makes us share in the divine life means that among many other things, we are really and truly co-creators with God. In our prayers at the Network, we often recall the story of the paralytic whose friends took him to meet Jesus. When they saw that Jesus was surrounded by so many people that they couldn’t get through the door, they didn’t throw up their hands and say, “Maybe we should come back tomorrow!” They created a new approach! They went up on the roof and took away some of the tiles. Then they lowered their friend down in front of Jesus, and Jesus cured him. Let us recognize that our world truly is awash in grace, that God really is at work in our lives, and that for that reason we have every right to be excited about the future. Viva Cristo Rey!

LEADING AND LEARNING We retain all of our students. We grow all of our students. We graduate all of our students. These shared goals guide our Leading and Learning team’s strategic priorities across three domains: Instructional Leadership Development, Effective Classroom Instruction, and Curriculum and Assessment. Through targeted initiatives fueled by a lead investment from The Howley Foundation, we deliver robust professional development offerings for principals and teachers to increase students’ academic preparedness for college.
PUTTING MATH EDUCATION TO WORK Educators from six schools concluded their first of two years of development to increase math achievement for all students. In partnership with the Silicon Valley Mathematics Initiative, our Network is improving teacher practice and implementing high quality resources that positively impact classroom instruction. Seven additional schools joined the initiative this year.

STUDENT RETENTION PROJECT Promising results! Network-wide four-year retention increased from 62% to 67% this school year. Our Student Retention Fund is equipping schools with the financial resources to develop and implement a data-driven, strategic, and intentional approach to the challenge of attrition. Sixteen schools have been awarded grants to implement two-year, site-based initiatives to increase four-year student retention.
SUMMER INSTITUTE School leaders, teachers, and school teams gathered for five weeks of curriculum revision workshops, capacity building sessions to implement our proprietary curriculum, and the acquisition of strategies to improve schools’ use of data to inform instruction, guide student retention efforts, and increase student achievement.
CORPORATE WORK STUDY PROGRAM Our organization was built upon an innovative idea launched in 1996 to engage high school students in professional jobs. The Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) in schools employs all students five full days a month to fund the majority of their Cristo Rey education, as they develop a dimension of experience and aspirations unattainable in the classroom alone. By matching a plan for diverse talent recruitment and development with the educational and economic needs of our youth, the national office CWSP team is implementing a national framework to elevate the impact of our growing Corporate Partnerships to ensure students’ college and career readiness. Through the integration of our CWSP curriculum, students are developed and assessed all four years of high school for their demonstration of transferable, lifelong skills and attributes. Their workplace success yields notable Corporate Partner retention and National Corporate Partnerships.

COLLEGE INITIATIVES Through the profound commitment of the Wilson Sheehan Foundation, we have developed and prioritized the resources to establish a Network-wide college-going culture, along with a systematic, results-based approach to improving our movement’s bachelor’s degree trajectory. The impact is evident: Cristo Rey graduates are completing bachelor’s degrees at 3x the rate of their peers.
