Who We Are, What We Do Like any journey in life, the road to opportunity is marked by challenges and obstacles. Cristo Rey Schools teach students to stand up to these challenges and obstacles every day. Whether it is through the experiences they gain in the work place, the lessons they learn in school or their interactions among their peers, teachers and mentors, these students are continuously building the strength of character and intelligence that will guide them as they journey into their future. . . a future of success. These students choose to succeed in a school where they will work an entry-level job to earn their tuition, have a longer school day, and a faith-based college prep education.
The Cristo Rey Network is comprised of 22 member schools, 5,003 students, 675 faculty, our University and Corporate Partners, a Center Office, and friends like you. The work of the Cristo Rey Network Center Office is to replicate this model in new markets, provide ongoing support to member schools, build University partnerships and sustain and grow existing schools with professional development programs.

We celebrate the addition of these schools and their students to the Network!
The Network welcomed Rob Birdsell as its new President and Chief Executive Officer. Mr. Birdsell joined Cristo Rey from Eduventures, a higher education consulting group, where he served as Managing Vice President. The Network Center Office also welcomed Anna Hall as Development Officer and Patrick Dunphy as Development Associate. The Cristo Rey Network Annual Meeting was hosted by North Cambridge Catholic High School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The week-long conference brought together representatives of 28 different religious congregations who sponsor Cristo Rey Network schools.
Graduate students at the University John P. Foley, S.J., Executive Chairman of Chicago Graduate School of Business of the Cristo Rey Network, received Honorary provided pro bono consulting to the Network Doctorate degrees from Georgetown in financial management systems. A Letter from the Chairman and President
You have in your hands the Cristo Rey Network Annual Report for Fiscal Year 2008. As you can see, we are very much alive and vibrant, ready to continue serving the member schools in their mission of attending to urban young people who otherwise would be left behind. We are sincerely grateful to all those who help us keep our movement growing. One of the most appealing aspects of the Cristo Rey Network and our educational model is the business plan. In Cristo Rey schools, the students pay for a majority of their own education by spending five days a month working at an entry-level clerical job. In the 2007-2008 school year, the 4,235 students from all our schools contributed over $22 million and thus they become the biggest supporters of their own education. The fact that they are not “charity cases� makes it possible for them to raise their heads just a bit higher. They discover what they are capable of and realize the implications for their own future. They know full well what it is costing them and they are proud to invest in their own education. Those who hire our students attest to what a positive experience it is for everyone involved. It is truly a win-win situation. No one loses. The companies get enthusiastic young employees who are supervised on a daily basis and their own employees are proud that their company is ready to give young people a chance. The students get a top notch college-prep education, and the experience of knowing they can have a future in the business world. And, the school can pay its bills without having to fundraise for every penny. Thanks to all those who have partnered with us and our students in their formation. Thanks for helping us show them what they can do and what they can be. The Cristo Rey Network schools are in the business of giving hope and we are grateful to all those who make that happen.

The Educational Enrichment Initiative
The Cristo Rey Network has achieved impressive high school graduation and college enrollment rates relative to its peers. While many factors such as financial aid and family expectations likely affect the college success of our students, rigorous academic preparation has been shown to be the most important driver of college completion. Given the Cristo Rey Network’s mission, our entering 9th-grade students are typically behind gradelevel academically—therefore, preparing them for the academic rigors of college requires significant remediation and accelerated learning. In the summer of 2008, a planning process led to a new initiative which shifts our primary focus from growing the numbers of students in Cristo Rey Network schools to enriching the educational model—to best prepare our students for success in college. The Cristo Rey Network Educational Enrichment Initiative seeks to develop and strengthen a culture of continuous improvement – within each classroom and school and across the Network:

A focus, within each school and across the Network, on engaging in a cycle of learning; an openness to measuring outcomes, learning what worked and what didn’t and adapting practices to incorporate new learning
A CULTURE, within each school and across the Network – that encourages, supports, and rewards sharing and using “best practice” tools that demonstrate success in improving student progress toward college readiness
A focus across the Network on continually improving academic standards and programming, recognizing that it may take multiple iterations to achieve the goal
An “open door” mindset in which teachers invite others (e.g. principals, peers) into their classrooms to help them improve their instruction
A focus within each school on using data and assessments to drive ongoing improvement in teaching and learning, and within each classroom on using data and assessments to continually improve each student’s progress towards college readiness
A SCHOOL CULTURE that is open to other high performing, high expectation schools in urban centers

University Partners
Almost 2,000 Cristo Rey Network alumni have gone on to pursue post-secondary education. More than 500 students enrolled in college in the fall of 2008. Most were the first person in their families to pursue higher education. By 2012, more than 2,000 Cristo Rey Network graduates from twentytwo high schools will enter college each year. Realizing the clear need to actively support graduates to and through college and beyond, the Cristo Rey Network partnered with Georgetown University to organize the first National Summit on Post-Secondary Success in July 2008. The Summit began a national dialogue between university and high schools administrators about what more can and should be done to ensure success for Cristo Rey Network students as they enter college. Georgetown hosted the daylong Summit that included over 50 university and high school leaders from across the country. Three strategic post-secondary initiatives emerged from the Summit: advisory council A Post-Secondary Advisory Council was formed to guide the sharing of best practices and articulating future research questions.
Cristo Rey Network graduates at the conclusion of each semester. The reports from the study will inform and shape future planning at both the secondary and post-secondary levels.
longitudinal study The Cristo Rey Network will conduct a five-year longitudinal study tracking recent Network graduates to determine key predictors of success in college and beyond. The study has two main sources of data. Student enrollment and degree data will be collected from the National Student Clearinghouse. In addition, this data will be supplemented by findings from a survey of recent
university partners In the spring of 2009, Cristo Rey Network will launch its University Partners Program to ensure that Network graduates have the freedom to explore and choose colleges based on fit rather than financial aid packages. Clearly, matching Cristo Rey Network graduates with the appropriate resources, opportunities, and support is critical to ensure their success at the university level.
