Message from Leadership
Our growing national movement works to transform the educational landscape for youth in under-resourced communities across America. As the largest network of high schools serving low-income students, we empower our hard-working students to succeed in college and career. Your continuing engagement with the Cristo Rey Network enables us to sustain our growth and expand programming for our schools to open a new world of possibilities for thousands of young people. With your support, we opened three new schools this year, our student workers collectively earned $68 million last year towards their high school education, and our students are completing college at more than three times the rate of the entire low-income population. Deeply committed to continuous improvement, our schools worked hard to retain 87% of ninth graders into tenth grade and to increase student participation in Advanced Placement courses, with students taking nearly 3,000 AP tests in 17 subjects. In collaboration with our 3,400 Corporate Partners, teachers and school leaders, 47 University Partners, 36 Religious Sponsors, national office staff, and local and national Boards, we provide the opportunity for a transformative college- and career-preparatory education to over 12,000 young people. With deep gratitude to each of you who contribute to opening the door of opportunity to our students, we remain yours in Cristo Rey.

Another year has gone by, and the Cristo Rey movement continues full throttle. That in itself is proof that the hand of the Lord is here, at least the way I see it! I hope it is a consolation for all of us committed to the Cristo Rey mission that, whether we know it or not, we are promoting the Kingdom of God. That is an awesome task, a privileged calling and an extraordinary undertaking.
Reflections from Chair Emeritus
We have always said that Cristo Rey began as a solution to the waste of so much talent. So many young people were not getting a chance to develop their God-given abilities. God’s plan for them was being frustrated because they were not getting the opportunity to cultivate their gifts through a quality education. That situation is the opposite of the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom comes about when things are the way God meant them to be, when the world functions like God meant it to function! That is how the Cristo Rey Network is promoting the Kingdom of God! As time goes on, this Cristo Rey story continues to unfold. Presently we are trying to develop new models to apply to geographic locations that are smaller than the ones we initially targeted. The initial challenge is the availability of jobs, but if it truly is God’s work, we will figure it out! Another new area for our attention is the world of alumni/ae we are producing. We had our first graduates in June 1998. Since then we have graduated over 15,000 youth. We have been making some first efforts to bring them together, and there has been a lot of initial interest. You may remember that our tagline is “transforming urban America one student at a time,” which seems to be happening. Academic Excellence The Cristo Rey Network is continuously focused on improving academic growth and college preparatory achievement in our classrooms. With an expanded Leading and Learning team at the national office, the Network is delivering strategic programming to: • Support the recruitment and development of high-quality school leaders, including establishing common criteria for Mary Kearney, Ed.D. Chief Academic Officer

Putting MATH Education to Work The Cristo Rey Network launched Putting MATH Education to Work, a $1.25 million investment by The Howley Foundation to advance student achievement in mathematics by developing the capacity of Cristo Rey math teachers and school principals through professional development and instructional support.

2017 Summer Institute at LUC Loyola University Chicago’s conference services hosted and sponsored 150 faculty across the Network for a series of seven, weeklong working sessions in the summer to deepen instructional knowledge and skills to accelerate achievement.

Through the Corporate Work Study Program, Cristo Rey schools are a national leader in building a pipeline of talent for the demands of the economy. As we work towards achieving a Bachelor’s degree completion rate of 58%, the Wilson Sheehan Foundation has enabled our College Initiatives team to support schools in our network-wide college initiatives practice to increase postsecondary match, access, and persistence through the following priorities: • Ensure that all schools have college-going frameworks in place, emphasizing appropriate staffing and protected time for college counseling • Implement a data-driven college counseling program with established benchmarks for grades 9-12 • Develop Alumni Advisors’ practice to effectively support alumni beginning in students’ senior year of high school through college graduation • Expand 47 current University Partners to include additional four-year institutions committed to the success of Cristo Rey students

2018 Cristo Rey Network Annual Meeting A record 253 participants attended the 2018 Cristo Rey Network Annual Meeting hosted by San Miguel High School, our Cristo Rey school in Tucson, AZ. Staff from seven discipline-specific cohorts engaged in programming and cross-disciplinary work.

School Growth Our feasibility study findings support the well documented research that young people from families with limited economic means lack access to quality education. With a focus on opening new schools while increasing enrollment at existing schools, the Network Board of Directors approved a data-driven growth plan for 50 Cristo Rey schools serving 20,000 students and 40,000 alumni in the decade ahead.

With major gifts from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, the Louis Calder Foundation, and an anonymous donor, the Cristo Rey Network opened three new schools in 2018: Cristo Rey Oklahoma City Catholic High School, Cristo Rey De La Salle East Bay High School in Oakland, CA, and Cristo Rey Fort Worth High School. All new school development efforts in local communities are driven and directed by our School Growth team’s replication process to ensure that new schools launch positioned for long-term success.
