Humboldt Man Pronounced DOA

On April 30, 2023 officers of the Humboldt Police Department were dispatched to a location on Burrow Street in Humboldt at 2:49 a.m. in reference to a subject that had been shot.

Upon arrival one subject, Markheous Keshon Lloyd 25-year-old black male from Humboldt was found with gunshot wounds. Markheous Keshon Lloyd was transported to a local hospital by Gibson County EMS where he was pronounced deceased.

Humbobldt Native Honored as Teacher of the Year

GARNER, N.C. (WTVD) -- A high school teacher in Garner was named the 2023 Wake County Public School System Teacher of the Year.

Civic Literacy and African American Studies teacher Terry Hennings has been a teacher at Garner Magnet High School since July 2017. He became a teacher as a second career after serving in the US Air Force for 25 years.

“My time in the U.S. Air Force has provided a unique opportunity to insert my own experiences and include personal, culturally relevant experiences. Tyre Nichols died after being beaten by five other former Memphis Police officers on Jan. 10, 2023.

Positive Force Mentoring Program Provides ‘Anchor of Hope’ For Boys in Jackson

The Positive Force Mentoring Program is a nonprofit organization committed to providing mentors and good social outlets for boys in the Jackson area.

This Saturday, May 6th, the program will offer a free fishing clinic in Jackson from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for boys. Yes, the clinic will focus on the fundamentals of fishing, but it is also designed to provide “an anchor of hope” for a lifetime.

As soon as I heard about this mentoring program, I wanted to interview the two positive forces behind this organization: Kelvin Streeter and Gregory M. Brooks, Jr. Streeter and Brooks are program coordinators for The Positive Force Mentoring Program and they recently took the time to share why programs like theirs are needed in this special Q&A:

Q: Why is it important for boys and young men to have a mentor and a social outlet?

Brooks: I believe it’s important for young boys to have a mentor because during our younger years in life we pretty much are growing sponges. During those earlier years whatever we see, we tend to do. With the world we live in, we have to understand everyone is going to have a mind of their own one day. But what a great mentor can do is help shape and guide their mentee into having a just mindset for the world we live in. Which is why it’s extremely important for young GROWING men to have a mentor. Young men go through this transition from boy to man. It’s not always an easy transition. It’s also a space for many doors to be open. Whether they’re good or bad doors. This is where a mentor is needed to help

Knowing which lakes are productive can greatly improve your success. There is also an app called Fishbrain where people share information about many topics that may be helpful as well. We live in a high tech society where information is at our fingertips and all we have to do is tune in. This knowledge can make all the difference in our fishing experiences and save us a lot of time just fishing instead of catching fish. Some people like to bait hooks and go for what ever bites but, there are skills to help catch certain species with greater numbers. Tuning in to TWRA weekly reports and Fishbrain can take the guessing out of your fishing trips. If you are not tech savvy get the kid to show you the apps and then take them fishing with you next time.

Jackson, TN Boom Ready to Compete in The Soccer Tournament

Jackson, TN - Jackson, TN Boom, a professional soccer team, is excited to announce their participation in The Soccer Tournament, set to begin on June 1. The tournament is expected to draw some of the best teams from around the world, and Jackson, TN Boom is ready to represent their city on the world stage.

Led by USJ and Memphis alumni Assistant Coach Andy Metcalf, the team has been training hard to prepare for the tournament. The players have been pushing themselves to the limit to be in top form, and the team has two exhibition games scheduled before the tournament: one on May 26 and the other on May 27 at Union University. Tickets for both the exhibition games and the kids camp are available for purchase at 731soccer.com.

Jackson, TN Boom is proud to have eight local West Tennessee players on their team. These players have been working hard to represent their hometown and are excited to compete in The Soccer Tournament. Additionally, the team has six international professional reinforcement players who bring a wealth of experience and talent to the team.

The Soccer Tournament will feature some of the best teams from around

the world, including Ryan Renold’s Wrexham, Eva Longoria’s Necaxa from Mexico, BVB Dourtmond from Bundesliga, West Ham from the English Premier League, and a couple MLS teams. Jackson, TN Boom is excited to compete against such high-caliber teams and show the world what they’re made of.

In addition to the exhibition games, Jackson, TN Boom will hold a soccer camp for kids on May 27. The camp will offer kids the opportunity to learn from the team’s players and coaches.

On May 4, there will be a watch party at Jamaican African Cuisine at 11 AM to find out which group Jackson, TN Boom will be placed in and which teams they will face. Fans are encouraged to attend and show their support for the team.

United States Marshal Tyreece Miller had the honor of swearing in two new Court Security Officers for the Federal Courthouse.

According to Marshal Miller “David Demoss and Matt Hardaway were both his Sergeants at different stages of his career at the Jackson Police Department.” Both were good officers and Supervisors who retired honorably from JPD. The lesson here is this according to Miller “if you’re in a leadership position, always be mindful of how you treat people. Most importantly, set a good example and you will grow leaders who just may one day in a position to give you an opportunity. Knowledge is the Key to Comprehension

I suppose I should start out with highlights from the School Board meeting on 4-13-23. As always, the meeting was comprised of recognition by Dr. King and the School Board for excellence in Academics, Athletics, and the Arts. Dr. King gave a plaque and a ribbon to an additional eleven students that had scored 30+ on their ACT exams. These students represented four different schools. They also announced that there would be a Spring Fling Arts festival at the Old Hickory Mall giving students across the district to put their creativity on display for all to see and enjoy.

There was also a special recognition for the Lady Hawks of Southside for bringing the Gold Ball to JMCSS and having an undefeated season. They also recognized four students from Liberty Tech that had attended the 2023 Student Congress on Policies in Education (SCOPE) at Belmont University sponsored by the TN School Board Associ-

ation. Dr. King presented the students with a certificate in recognition of their outstanding efforts representing JMCSS in a very positive manner. It warms my heart when students from Liberty Tech are recognized as I spent a semester and a half teaching at Liberty.

I would like to commend Ms. Lakita Darnell for sponsoring the students and giving kudos to Ms. Jennifer Ballard for bearing fruit for her efforts in raising the bar at Liberty Tech

Congratulations are also in order to Principal Nathan Lewis on being named TNASSP’s West TN Principal of the Year! In five years, Early

College High has had 136 students graduate with an Associate Degree in addition to their High School Diploma. Is there any wonder why JMCSS sports the slogan #CHOOSE US. I would be remiss if I did not applaud the resolution approved by the School Board in a called special meeting this week to deny American Classical Education in JMCSS. #BBAM A special thanks to Dr. Marlon King and Mr. Pete Johnson for their leadership as there appears to be no need to contract their students out.

Around the District

I have primarily been subbing in Gibson County Special School District and at Milan High School, a part of the MSSD. Milan Special School District has been recognized as Reading 360 Model District as a Foundational Skills Implementation District. Congratulations Mr. Criswell as this will bode well for middle and high school students for years to come. I would

like to thank the student athletes in both boys and girls basketball at Gibson County as I cannot remember a year when I have enjoyed high school basketball more. I appreciate the faculty and staff at Gibson County for enabling them to utilize my unique approach of teaching students about the importance of education to their future and the opportunities that exist for them moving forward. I have no doubt that I have had the privilege of having had future leaders in my classroom throughout the year. I hope I have made an impact on their outlook and equipped them with a growth mindset to face the challenges yet to come.

The event is specifically geared toward business and community leaders to share the state of the schools and celebrate the district’s successes.

an annual celebration of the collective accomplishments of our employees, students, and schools. You can’t help but be proud when you realize what our district accomplished over the last year,” said JMCSS Chief of Staff Melissa Spurgeon.

Humboldt Native Honored as Teacher of the Year

“Go Trojans! Go Garner!” School spirit was at an all-time high last Friday morning as Garner Magnet High students celebrated the brandnew Wake County (VA) Public School System (WCPSS) Teacher of the Year Terry Hennings.

Hennings was named the 2023 Teacher of the Year April 27, and the school’s Black Student Union Club (for which he serves as advisor) hosted a festive celebration complete with music, balloons and lots of excitement.

Afterward, Mark Roberts, spokesman for Capital Chevrolet, presented Hennings with the keys to a 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe, which he will be able to drive during his reign as Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to Terry Hennings and Garner Magnet High!

The police department is Knocking on Shawn’s door.

Shawn refuses to answer, As he has often done before.

Shawn is wanted On a ten thousand dollar bond; They’re waiting at the county line For Shawn to return.

abuse call at 201 Poplar Avenue. The suspect, Tatyana Roach-Lockhart, (r) was allegedly seen physically abusing her two-year-old son.

MPD says Lockhart jerked the child into the air and threw him onto the metal benches, causing him to cry and scream. Police stepped in and took the suspect into custody.

According to a witness, Lockhart threw the child on the ground multiple times. She also screamed at the child, saying he gets on her “[expletive] nerves.” The witness tried intervening, but the suspect told her to mind her business.

Lockhart told police that she told her child to be quiet, and he wouldn’t. She said he threw a “temper tantrum,” so she “jacked him up.”

The child was taken to LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in stable condition. Tatyana Roach-Lockhart was charged with Aggravated Child Abuse/Neglect. She is set to appear in court Tuesday.

Positive Force Mentoring Program give advice, insight, and wisdom on which doors are beneficial and detrimental. Having a good social outlet is very important because not only is it a reminder that they have a group to lean on during hard and easy times, but it also lessens the issues our youth deals with on a daily. Issues like depression, anxiety (including social anxiety), suicidal thoughts, overthinking, etc. We are working on giving Jackson more social outlets for our youth and growing youth. What specifically inspired you to start the fishing clinic for boys in the Jackson area? Streeter: What inspired me to pour into and mentor the current youth is because of my former mentors. I have the spirit I have today because of the people God has sent into my life to mentor me throughout my years of growing up. I really want to highlight the 5 men that mentored me throughout my life. I’m implementing their ways into this program. I see a decline in the way our youth is in tuned with outside and natural things. We have to keep the kids active in the natural things more than ever right now. They are the future. No matter what area, city, or state you go to, there will be needed mentoring. I decided to mentor in the Jackson area. The age range is 10 to 17 for this free fishing clinic event in Jackson. The event will be held at a private lake located at 1823 Campbell Street. Participants must provide their own transportation for this event.
