A Tennessee woman who is serving a life sentence for killing a man who hired her for sex when she was 16 has been granted clemency by Governor Bill Haslam after celebrities including Kim Kardashian rallied for her release. Cyntoia Brown, now 30, was granted full clemency on Monday after serving 12 years in prison.

JERMAINE BAILEY CHARGED WITH MURDER OF EX-GIRLFRIEND 12/27/2018 - Nashville -- Jermaine Bailey, 39, is now charged with criminal homicide for the December 16th fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend, Shalinda Gordon, 42, inside her 801 Netherlands Drive home.Ê Bailey shot himself in the head inside the home prior to police arrival.Ê He was released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center today.ÊÊÊÊÊ At the time of the shooting, Bailey was under an active order of protection to have no contact with Gordon after she reported that he was repeatedly texting and calling her despite her admonishment for him to stop.Ê Bailey was arrested for harassing Gordon on November 11th.Ê The order of protection was served on him then.Ê He was released from jail after posting a $1,000 bond.ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊ In addition to murder, Bailey is also charged with violating a restraining order and unlawful gun possession due to the order of protection.Ê He is being held without bond.

THIEVES STEAL HUNDREDS BY STUFFING KROGER MERCHANDISE INÊBACKPACKS JANUARY 8, 2019, BYÊERYN TAYLOR - wreg.com Cynthia Butler and Shawn Moore SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. —Ê Two people were taken into custody after police say they stuffed hundreds of dollars worth of Kroger merchandise into their backpacks and walked out the door.

It happened Monday morning at the store at 3444 Plaza Avenue.

The security guard told police she saw a man and woman stuffing items into their backpacks and into a basket they were carrying around the store. When the guard confronted them, they dropped the basket near the front door and took off down Poplar Avenue.

Once they arrived on the scene, police set off in the same direction and eventually located two people matching the description given to them at the Starbucks on Poplar Avenue. Both individuals were detained and positively identified by the security officer as the suspects responsible for the theft.

They were identified by police as Cynthia Butler and Shawn Moore.

Authorities said they had $311.38 worth of merchandise inside the backpacks. The items in the basket that they dropped near the Kroger entranced totaled $54.91. Both Moore and Butler were charged with theft of property.

TRAFFIC STOP FOR HIGH BEAMS LEADS TO DRUG BUST, POLICEÊSAY JANUARY 8, 2019, BYÊERYN TAYLOR - wreg.com Daniel Banks, Justin Hardaway, and Martavius Ward MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three Memphis men are behind bars after police say they found drugs and a loaded gun in their possession.

According to police, it all started when an officer pulled over a vehicle on Florida Street for driving with its high beams on. That’s when the officers said they smelled marijuana coming from the car.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of a backpack inside which was carrying a loaded gun, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

All three men inside the car – Justin Hardaway, Daniel Banks and Martavius Ward – denied ownership of the bag. All three were charged with various drug and firearm-related charges.

FACEBOOK SALE TURNS DEADLY AFTER ASSUMED BUYER SPOTS GUN INÊCAR JANUARY 9, 2019, BYÊERYN TAYLOR Montavious Farmer MEMPHIS, Tenn. — One man is dead and another behind bars after what started off as a Facebook sale took a dramatic turn.

According to police, they responded to the 6200 block of Arborwoods Drive inside the Arbor Apartments complex on January 5 after receiving a shots fired call. When they arrived they found Matthew Taylor lying unresponsive in the front seat of a red Infinite G35. He had been shot multiple times and died on the scene.

A woman told officers she had been sitting inside the car with Taylor when he was shot and killed.

According to the witness, Taylor had posted on Facebook that he was selling a pair of shoes and was contacted by a man known as Tay. Taylor and the witness met Tay in the apartment complex, and as Taylor was showing the man the shoes the other man pulled out a gun.

He told Taylor to hand him the gun that was stashed in the car, but before he could even reach for it, Tay started shooting, the woman said. The man then reached in, grabbed the gun and took off through the complex.

Police later identified the suspect at Montavious Farmer.

Farmer was charged with first-degree murder, especially aggravated robbery and reckless endangerment.

Tennessee Governor grants clemency for woman convicted of murdering man who bought her for sex when she was 16 ByÊTheGrioÊ- January 7, 2019 GovernorÊBill HaslamÊhas granted executive clemency toÊCyntoia Brown (right)Êby commuting her life sentence.

The governor’s office announced the decision Monday morning sharing that she will be released to parole supervision on August 7, 2019, according toÊNashville 5.

By that time she will have served 15 years in prison.

“This decision comes after careful consideration of what is a tragic and complex case,” Haslam said. “Cyntoia Brown committed, by her own admission, a horrific crime at the age of 16. Yet, imposing a life sentence on a juvenile that would require her to serve at least 51 years before even being eligible for parole consideration is too harsh, especially in light of the extraordinary steps Ms. Brown has taken to rebuild her life. Transformation should be accompanied by hope. So, I am commuting Ms. Brown’s sentence, subject to certain conditions.”

Haslam has a week and a half left in his term.

January 6, 2019 - byÊKyle Eustice The finale of Lifetime’s six-part documentary,Surviving R. Kelly,Êaired on Saturday (January 5). For three nights, it explored disturbing details of R. Kelly’s sordid past andÊsparked outrageÊacross social media.

Prior to Thursday’s (January 3) premiere, Kelly’s lawyer Brian Nix reportedlyÊthreatened to suethe television network if the show aired. Now that it has, sources close to Kelly say the R&B legend is getting ready to “sue everybody who had anything do with this,” according toÊTMZ.Ê Despite not watching any of it, Kelly is allegedly “disgusted” by the series and believes those who participated in it have a “vendetta” against him.

KellyÊalso claims he didn’t know half the people who were interviewed for the show and insists the other half hates him for personal and professional reasons. He says there were various people who wanted to defend him, but the producers wouldn’t allow it.

Topics discussed in the docu-series included Kelly’s alleged inappropriate sexual relationship with Aaliyah. Former backup singer Jovante Cunningham said she caught the coupleÊhaving sexÊon a tour bus while on the road. Aaliyah’s mother, Diane Haughton,Êdenies anythingÊlike that ever occurred.

Kelly and the late singer were married August 1994. Shortly after the hotel room ceremony, Aaliyah’s parents had the marriage annulled. Although the Cook County Clerk Office couldn’t provide a digital copy of the marriage certificate,ÊDeputy Communications Director James Scalzitti provided the details to HipHopDX. “Our office policy is that we cannot share images of marriage certificates until 50 years from the date of the marriage have passed,” Scalzitti wrote in an email.

‘SURVIVING R. KELLY’ spurs follow-up calls from DA, attorney for alleged victim’s family says

Gerald Griggs, an attorney for the family of Joycelyn Savage, one of the women featured in “Surviving R. Kelly,” said the Fulton County District Attorney reached out to Griggs a few days ago, after the show aired.

Griggs said the Fulton County DA is conducting an investigation into Kelly.

Chris Hopper, the public information officer for the Fulton County DA, said he had “no comment” after being asked if there was an open investigation of Kelly in Georgia.

SAACAs 2018 Kwanzaa Celbration CSE NEWS/S. DOUGLAS The Society for African-American Cultural Awareness (SAACA) hosted their 30th Annual Community Kwanzaa Celebration. SAACA’s Kwanzaa Celebration was held at T. R. White Sportsplex in Jackson, TN on December 30th.

The 2018 National theme was “Re-imagining and RemakingÊ the World: A Kwanzaa Commitment To An Inclusive Good”. The basement of T. R. White Sportsplex was filled with people from the community who came together to celebrate Kwanzaa with SAACA.Ê During the program various SAACA members, artist, dancers, singers, and small business owners told the audience their interpretation of the seven principles of Kwanzaa.

December 26: Umoja which means UNITY. Mona Lisa Lanier’s School of Dance African dancers performed an African dance during the program.

The girls lit the first candle.

December 27: Kujichagulia which means SELF-DETERMINATION. Members of the Jackson, TN Chapter of Top Teens of America, Inc. talked about how Kujichagulia selfdetermination has helped them throughout journey to becoming responsible adults.

December 28: Ujima which means John Dixson and Collective Work and Responsibility. friend Tammy Cherry opened the eyes of the community to the need to help “Our” community.Ê December 29: Ujamaa which means Cooperative Economics.

SAACA member and local business owner, Kathy Moore along with other vendors spoke about how local businesses can give back to the community with the support of the community.Ê December 30: Nia which means PURPOSE. SAACA member and local elected official Darryl Hubbard spoke about having a purpose in life. He encouraged the people to find their purpose.

December 31: Kuumba which means CREATIVITY. Ami Hanna-Huff a local artist and college student created a work of art during the program to show her vision of Kwanzaa.

January 1: Imani which means FAITH. Lincoln Elementary Cheerleaders performed an interpretive dance.
