Police: Man stabbed by teen son in Humboldt 18 hours ago

HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — Police say a juvenile was taken into custody in Humboldt after stabbing his father.

According to a news release, on the afternoon of Saturday, May 20, Humboldt Police officers responded to an area outside the police department in reference to an active domestic assault involving a knife.

The release states officers determined that a 33-year-old male victim had been stabbed multiple times by a 14-year-old, identified as his son.

The release says the victim was transported by Gibson County EMS to a nearby hospital, where

Shares Words of Wisdom and Award-Winning Poetry During Jackson Visit

Last weekend, I enjoyed listening to award-winning poems and words of wisdom from a nationally renowned poet.

Jacqueline Allen Trimble, who was selected as a 2021 National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellow, led a very engaging poetry workshop on Saturday, May 20th at the ComeunityCafé in downtown Jackson. Trimble is a professor of English and chairs the Department of Languages and Literature at Alabama State University.

One of the first sports that most kids play is little league softball and baseball. It is the start of an athletic career that usually transfers into some other sport such as basketball, football, volleyball or perhaps some other sport. However, it provides youth the opportunity to begin forming team appreciation and social skills that are more important than the actual game. Kids from different backgrounds become teammates and learn how to work together as well as parents banning together for the support of their children. It is a toss up as to who has the most fun between the parents and the children. The old fashioned song “ Take me out to the ball game, Take me out to the crowd. Buy me some peanuts and crac0ker Jack, I don’t care if we ever get back, “ best describes the fun most people have at the ballpark. If you haven’t been to the ballpark you don’t know what you are missing. So get on out and join the croud because you don’t need to have kids to enjoy the fun.

Graduates Are You Going to Make History or Become History?

This is the question I asked juniors and seniors this past school year. Primarily to seniors as they moved closer to graduation. When I posed this question to middle schoolers, their responses were upbeat and positive. I explained that this school year was much like my “senior year,” as I began substitute teaching in 2019.

Based on my discussions with students this year, 2023 is closer to their idea of normalcy in school. I am happy to report that students once more appear to be optimistic about their futures and willing to acknowledge the importance and value of their respective schools and their teacher’s role in introducing them to high quality instructional material to prepare them for the next chapter in their lives post-graduation. The students that have a desire to learn and succeed will be able to leverage their high school education like never before. For those that did not apply themselves and discarded the opportunity are in for a rude awakening sooner than they think.

Whether they realize it or not, students over the past four years have made history and laid the groundwork for those that follow them to high school and beyond. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to witness history in the making in education, as these students have taught me much about the future and how to apply resilience to overcome setbacks. My contribution has been to teach students life lessons, as high school is a place where you learn how to learn, make memories,

and build relationships that may very well endure the test of time, due to connections provided by social media. Post-secondary is where they will learn to earn, and higher education is the place where dreams are replaced by possibilities, as hard work and determination are the drivers of personal success!

That same message can be evidenced in Gibson County Special School District and if you walk the halls at Milan high school there is a wave of purple and school spirit as they look forward to the upcoming school year. High school sports have played a big part in bringing back school spirit and reminding rural communities of the importance of their respective schools. When I was in high school, vocational training was where students were placed to gain a skill as they were not perceived as being academically proficient to move forward in school. Community Colleges were being built to provide a different pathway and TCAT was not a thing in those days.

Today we refer to that as CTE or Certified Technical Educa-

tion, which enables students to earn while they learn and gain skills, they can utilize it to make a living from a broad range of professional and technical careers. You can find evidence of that in Gibson, Obion, and Weakley counties in this area. I think we can all agree with Dr. Marlon King; “Things are getting better!” Class of 2023 go out there and make history.

When we graduate High school it’s mixed feelings. You’re proud of your accomplishments and watching your friends graduate along side of you, but on the flip side that’s actually the last time you will see everyone together. As we embark upon our different paths we’ve chosen in our lives whether it be college, work, U.S. Armed Services,etc. We drift away from our friendships to start a new chapter in our lives. With all that being said My husband and I attended our Class of 81 Reunion and literally it was a blast from the Past. I want to thank the 81 Reunion Committee for Making everything so nice and Comfortable. I dont want to start naming names for fear of missing names, but you know who you are and the roles you played in making this reunion Remarkable. And what can i say about the Opera House. It is a beautiful building. Humboldt is stepping up its game. I also enjoyed the Strawberry Festival (FrFr).It’s been years. I know some of you had other obligations and thats acceptable, but to not come over something petty like someone owed you 50 cents since 1981 and never paid you back.(Lol) well you get the gist. We’re older now 59, 60 and 61 years of age. Let Go, Let God and Forgive. Because we also paid tribute to our fallen classmates. LIFE IS TOO SHORT!!! WE Never know whose name will be on the table next. We have more years behind us than in front of us. We Love you Alvin and praying for a Speedy recovery. I’m full of joy tonight. I didn’t tell many people I was in an Emerging Developer Program. I told my cousin Brenda who was here yesterday from St. Louis and I’m glad I had family there. I told my colleagues they had to be my family.

An important part of the DMC’s work is encouraging and fostering diversity in the downtown development mix. Our Emerging Developer program includes classes and workshops designed to help prepare the participant for a career in commercial development.

Our goal is to create a stronger, more diverse, and equitable community beginning with those who are actively engaged in creating the built environment.

SCHOOLS CONTINUE COMMUNICATION AS RETENTION LAW IMPACTS FAMILIES

Principals will discuss options, exemptions as TCAP scores analyzed

JACKSON, Tenn. - Principals across the district are in the process of sharing with parents results from the TNReady-TCAP Achievement tests students completed in April. With the 2021 3rd grade retention law passed by Tennessee lawmakers using proficiency on TCAP English language arts (ELA) to determine promotion to the 4th grade, schools are working with families to determine options and exemptions.

“Exemptions are available for students deemed approaching or below expectation, but the majority of those learners won’t qualify for those requirements. So it’s important for parents to respond to communications shared by their schools to seek additional options,” Deputy Superintendent Dr. Vivian Williams said.

Students are placed in four different categories based on their Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) results: exceeds expectation, met expectation, approaching expectation and below expectation. Students approaching or below expectation on 3rd grade ELA will be retained unless the students are exempt or their parents agree to academic interventions.

“Despite the hurdle this particular law creates, supports are in place for students to gain promotion to fourth grade. These include summer learning camps, retesting, and tutoring sessions,” said Chief Academic Officer for JMCSS Tiffany Spight.

A total of 883 students participated in 3rd grade ELA TCAP testing. Additional data will be made available once preliminary scores are certified. More than 300 3rd graders are currently enrolled for summer learning camps next month.

“Our third grade parents are urged to respond to communications sent by the schools over the next couple of days. We want to make sure every third grader who desires to attend summer learning camp is able to do so,” Dr. Williams said.

HIDDEN GEM-

Aydison is a member of the volleyball, basketball and track teams. She has had an outstanding freshman year. Earning two state tournament appearances, one for basketball and one for track.

While playing volleyball, Aydison was the middle blocker and right-side hitter. She earned the Rookie of the Year award and was the 2nd leading blocker with 18 blocks, 3 digs, and 19 kills. Aydison was also awarded All Academic for having a GPA of 3.75.

At 5’8” tall, Aydison is a forward for the undefeated, Class AAA State Champion girls’ basketball team where she earned the Lay-up Spe-

cialist award and held the team’s highest field goal percentage, averaging 6.6 ppg, and 4.5 rebounds.

Finishing 1st place in the Class AA Sectionals for West Tennessee in the 100-meter dash and 3rd place in the 200-meter dash.

Aydison competed in 5 events this season. Her youthfulness and lack of experience came into play during the first two meets; however, as time went on, she continued to improve which resulted in her earning a state tournament appearance.

Tennessee, invited Trimble to lead the poetry workshop in Jackson as part of the Griot Collective’s Visiting Writing Series.

The Griot Collective is a 501(c)3 literary arts organization that sponsors poetry events as well as literary, social, and cultural activities throughout the community. The Griot Collective meets monthly from September through May.

Cherry described Trimble as “a warrior poet.” Her poems uniquely capture the heart of humanity coupled with the harrowing history of our country’s political and racial divide.

After leading the poetry workshop, Trimble read some of the poems featured in two of her published books of poetry, “American Happiness” and “How To Survive The Apocalypse.” One of Trimble’s poems titled “The Language of Joy” was recently turned into a short movie. The film celebrates the poem that represents a day when nothing could stop or steal a Black woman’s joy.

Trimble has an amazing gift for writing poems that evoke captivating visuals and a powerful range of emotions.

During the poetry workshop portion of the program, Trimble encouraged the poets in attendance to consistently work at their craft and draw inspiration from their everyday life. She offered tips and writing exercises to combat against writer’s block. Trimble said one of the best cures for writer’s block is a warm-up writing exercise that requires you “to look wherever you are and start writing about what you see.” According to Trimble, one of the most important keys to growing as a poet is developing a deep sense of self-awareness. There were small mirrors placed in front of every poet attending the workshop. Trimble instructed everyone to look at their face in the mirror and then write a poem about what they see. Several poetry workshop participants, including myself, found this exercise to be very impactful. I started my poem sharing how I see my late mother’s eyes looking back at me when I look in the mirror.

MEMPHIS – An investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Medicaid Fraud Control Division has resulted in the indictment and arrest of three women from Memphis.

In December 2022, TBI received a tip from BlueCare, a TennCare-managed care contractor, alleging fraudulent billing for TennCare services in Memphis. During the investigation, agents developed information that between June 2022 to October 2022, Latissa Johnson,(top) who is the mother of a TennCare recipient, schemed with her child’s home care provider, Shaqunna Jackson, (center) to submit claims for care that were never provided. Agents also determined Jackson’s supervisor, Syretta Jenkins, (bottom) participated in the scheme.

On May 2nd, a Shelby County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Johnson (DOB: 11/16/85), Jackson (DOB: 2/15/96), and Jenkins (DOB: 5/29/80) each with TennCare Fraud and Theft of Property ($10,000 to $60,000). On Tuesday, Jackson and Jenkins surrendered to authorities. Today, with the assistance of the Memphis Police Department Fugitive Team, Johnson was taken into custody. All three were booked into the Shelby County East Women’s Facility on $25,000.

The National Law Enforcement Memorial Services were held Friday at the Madison County Sheriff’s Office at 10:00 am.

LITTER ENFORCEMENT

The Jackson Police Department’s new logos for officers assigned to “litter enforcement” have started responding to calls of illegal dumping, and enforcement of the city’s health ordinances in the City of Jackson.

Trash and litter have become a top subject of complaints during this years City elections. Several candidates including newly elected Councilman Richard Donnell have lead the efforts to “clean up trash” in the city s d primarily east Jackson. Councilman Donnell who also host the weekly Sunday morning radio show in 96 KIX, 95.7 “ Community Feedback” has lead the charge to address trash problems in neighborhoods” Richard along with newly elected City Councilmen J P Stovall and Frank McMeen have stated their commitments to having a cleaner city and are working with Jackson Police Department, Health and Sanitation to respond and correct citizens complaints of illegal dumping and ensuring citizens trash piles are being picked up in a timely basis. Donnell said “these trash piles are so unsightly and ruin the environment of our communities especially east Jackson”. There will be also cameras placed in strategic locations throughout the city to identify those responsible for illegal dumping”
