BancorpSouth Bank Host Luncheon for Follow Me Into Business Participants BancorpSouth Bank President, Doug Roth, hosted a luncheon for the 2018 Follow Me Into Business participants. Roth invites the Follow Me Into Business participants to have lunch with him every year. During the lunch Mr. Roth gets to know the FMIB participants, their parents, and JMCAACC members. The FMIB participants also get a chance to ask Mr. Roth questions about banking and careers.

The Follow Me Into Business participants go through 8 weeks of job training. For the first 4 weeks Mrs. Mary Weddle, FMIB Advisor, goes over the work behaviors, resumes, and career goals.

After the participants learn the skills needed to go to work the Delonte Gunn pictured with Nell Huntspon FMIB participants spend the last 4 weeks either job shadowing or and Mary Weddle during BXS Luncheon working a paid job at local businesses. The participants range in ages 12-18 years old.

The following is information about the FMIB participants who attended the luncheon: Delonte Gunn is a 16 year old student at JCM Early College Start High School. This summer he worked at Food Rite in Doug Roth, President of Jackson, TN. Gunn works as a bagger and stock person. He will continue to work at Food Rite after the program ends.

BancorpSouth Bank Jackson, When asked what he liked about the job Gunn stated that he liked having good customer service. Being in contact with TN Branch the customers at Food Rite has helped him improve his communication skills. When Mr. Gunn graduates from High School he wants to become an athletic trainer and a Professional Baseball player. Gunn has been in the FMIB program for 4 years.

Xavier Ward is a 15 year old student at North Side High School. Ward worked at Futurlistic Salon and Barbershop. He worked as a barber apprentice and greeted customers. He liked the way that the owner (Robert Murphy) was able to work as a barber as well as a business owner who has other streams of revenue.

Mr. Ward plans to have a career in I.T. or anything working with computers. This was Mr. Ward’s first year in the FMIB program.

Serenity Williams is a 15 year old at Madison Academic High School. She Xavier Ward with his mother worked at Mission Convalescent Home in Jackson, TN. Ms. Williams said that she enjoyed working with the people in the nursing home. During her time at MCH she helped with patient care and activities. Ms. Williams plans to have a career in MD PHD Pharmacology. She has participated in the FMIB program for 2 years.

Demeka Yarbrough is a 16 year old Demeka Yarbrough with her student at Madison Academic High mother School. Ms. Yarbrough worked as an Office Assistant at the JMCAACC office. She worked with Florence Howard and Margaret Kimmins. They helped her improve her typing and organizational skills. Ms. Yarbrough wants to become an attorney after she graduates High School.

L OVINCOMMUNITYNEWS LOCAL CHURCHES NEEDED TO HOST ROOM IN THE INN DURING SWELTERING SUMMER MONTHS Jackson, Tennessee — Sweltering temperatures have caused Area Relief Ministries (ARM) to extend its Room in the Inn shelter for the homeless into the summer months.

Many of the homeless whom usually do not seek shelter have been standing in line in front of ARM’s shelter downtown on Church Street.

Thirty-three churches participate in offering hospitality to the homeless by transporting them from ARM to their churches, feeding, fellowshipping, giving them cots to sleep on and returning them to ARM’s day-shelter several times per month.

“If every church in our community would host one night per month, we could make it through this miserable weather,” Brad Franks, general manager of C.H. Robinson Worldwide and board member of ARM, said. Franks has been personally calling churches, asking them to participate. “My entire life is performance-based. This is the only thing I do because it is commanded, and I have no expectations other than to aid my fellow man. It is a great feeling!”

Dear Editor:

A 30th Letter to America The Mayflower pilgrims in Heaven, would be astonished, at American’s present-day attitude towards God, the Word of God, and his precious Son Jesus.

Their strong beliefs in God and Christianity were expressed in the Mayflower Compact. In that Compact, they said they did it, “for the glory of God and advancement of the Christian Faith,” and signed “in the presence of God.” Over half of those pilgrims who landed on the western side of Cape Cod Bay in mid-December, 1620, died that winter, because of poor nutrition and harsh living conditions. Because of their faith in God and Jesus they went to Heaven.

But Hell is where most present-day Americans are headed, because of their gross disobedience of God, and their unbelief.

Almost daily, we see elected officials and other well-known individuals, show their defiance towards’ God, when they proudly defend the indefensible. They seem to have no idea that there is a righteous God who created them, and that He set rules and Laws by which they are to live by.

Mankind will be judged by those laws and by the Word of God. America erred greatly when it started its separation from God. His commandment to teach the children diligently all about him, including to keep his commandments, statutes, and judgments, was forgotten by the Supreme Court and the other branches of government.

We took God out of America, so we should not be surprised when there seems to be more hate than love in America.

Foolish America has said, there is no God, has become morally corrupt, doing abominable things, and most do bad things instead of good.

In Jesus name stop the baby killing.

JACKSON, Tenn. – As Dr. Roderick Payne enters his twentieth year as an educator, he will take on a new role as Dr. Eric Jones, Superintendent of the Jackson-Madison County School System, announces his hiring as principal of Parkview Learning Center.

“I look forward to the challenge of changing students’ mindsets that their futures are not set, that their potential has yet to be realized,” said Dr. Payne.

Joining the district after nine years in administration in the Shelby County Schools, Dr. Payne most recently served as District Administrator of Academic Operations and School Support. He spent the 10 previous years in Memphis City Schools working in the middle and high school levels. “The job of principal at Parkview Learning Center appealed to me because it will give me an opportunity to have a positive impact on our youth and provide exposure to authentic outcomes to successful life goals,” Dr. Payne stated.

Dr. Payne expects challenges as he takes over the district’s alternative school for high and middle school students. “I expect the biggest challenge will be to change the mindset of students and, often times, the parent when they may have given up on being a successful person,” admitted Payne. “Many times, all it takes is a caring individual providing an opportunity.” He said to expect changes, including new programs to be implemented at Parkview.

As for what parents, students and staff can expect, Dr. Payne said he wants to create a positive, safe learning and teaching environment. “They will see a structured climate where everyone is treated fairly and with respect,” he explained. “I will be transparent with communication and information impacting personnel and students.”

The Memphis native attended Shelby and Tipton County schools, graduating from Munford High School. He earned his Bachelors in Criminal Justice at the University of Tennessee at Martin, his Masters from Christian Brothers University, his Education Specialist from Union University and his Doctorate from the University of Mississippi.

Dr. Payne and his wife of 19-years have two children, a daughter who is a student at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and a 12-year-old son who will enter the 7th grade this fall. He is an avid sports fan, basketball in particular.

Dr. Payne takes over for Jason Newman, who left the district to pursue another administrative opportunity.

Lane Students Accepted to McWherter Scholars Program Jackson, Tenn - The Volunteer Center for Rural Development selected Lane College students, Kiana Rouse and Marcus Perkins, to the McWherter Scholars Scholarship Program for the 2018-19 academic year.

Selected from a highly competitive group of students, Rouse of Whiteville and Perkins of Jackson, are required to read and write reaction papers, convene with fellow scholars from West Tennessee, and attend leadership retreats.

For their participation in the program, both will receive a scholarship of up to $2,000 each.

Eligible program applicants have at least a 3.5 GPA, be permanent residents of West Tennessee and attend a West Tennessee college or university full time.

“I want to preach the gospel around the world and locally establish a law firm that serves various businesses, especially churches when it comes to business decisions and transactions,” Perkins, a senior history major and minister, said.

He said he plans to attend law school after he graduates from Lane.

Rouse, a junior business major whose interests include technology, mathematics, and music, said she wants a career that provides her with financial stability and emotional fulfillment.

“I would love to be a motivational speaker who encourages people to strive for success no matter what obstacles may come their way,” Rouse said.

McWherter Scholars are rural West Tennesseans who represent colleges and universities in West Tennessee outside of Memphis. The Volunteer Center for Rural Development is a non-profit organization devoted to improving the lives of rural Tennesseans through education, jobs and economic development, and development of future

Kinchen to lead Union University’s Department of Music JACKSON, Tenn. — Union University has named John Kinchen as chairman of its Department of Music and director of choral activities, effective July 1.

Kinchen comes to Union from Liberty University, where he was associate dean of the Center for Music and Worship, professor of music and worship studies and artistic director and conductor of the Liberty University Symphony Orchestra.

“We are incredibly blessed to have Dr. John Kinchen join our faculty,” Union Provost John Netland said. “He is a great mission fit for us. He is specially gifted both in terms of traditional music performance and worship leadership and will help us prepare men and women for musical service to the church and in a variety of cultural contexts.”

During his time at Liberty, Kinchen assisted in expanding the music department into a large School of Music with more than 1,000 music students.

Kinchen joined the Liberty faculty in 2006 and held a number of positions there during his tenure. He also served as pastor of worship at Lakewood Baptist Church in Evington, Virginia, from 20062014, and he previously held leadership roles in a number of other churches.

“I am excited to join the Union University family and help lead the Department of Music into a new period of growth and development,” Kinchen said. “My prayer is that the Department of Music at Union University will be known as the premier music program in the state of Tennessee, and among the very best across the country, for the training of worship leaders, music educators, commercial musicians and performers.

“I look forward to building relationships with pastors, worship leaders and parents to help them see the Department of Music at Union University as the very best place to send talented musicians and gifted worship leaders to receive a Christcentered education in music and worship that promotes excellence and character development in service to the Church and society.”

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Kinchen completed his Bachelor of Music degree from Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York; his Master of Music degree from Florida State University; and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Boston University. He is finishing his Doctor of Worship Studies degree from Liberty.

“He is a distinguished conductor, both orchestral and choral, and has a passion for training musicians for a vast array of musical vocations, from symphonies to Broadway, from the contemporary music industry to church worship and music education,” Netland said. “Most importantly, he is a devoted follower of Jesus Christ and is passionately committed to our mission of Christ-centered education.” Kinchen and his wife Denise have two children – Charissa, 19, and Dawson, 16.

Jackson, Tenn. - Lane College President Logan Hampton has announced Dr. Michael Triplett, high school principal at Charles Sumner High School in St. Louis, Missouri, will be the keynote speaker at the Commencement Convocation at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 28, in the J. F. Lane Health and Physical Education Building on the Lane College campus.

“We are thrilled Dr. Triplett has agreed to speak to our graduating seniors on their very special day. We are particularly proud that he is coming home to his alma mater to share a vital message,” Hampton said. “Dr. Triplett has faced many obstacles to success during his childhood and formative years.

“His achievement in overcoming the odds and reaching his present level of success is in keeping with the highest traditions of Lane College and its mission of service to humankind.”

Dr. Triplett received his bachelor’s degree from Lane College in 1993. He then went on to obtain three master’s degrees in social services, business administration, and educational administration.

Dr. Triplett has a doctorate degree in educational administration from St. Louis University and Webster University.

For the past 23 years, Dr. Triplett has served in the St. Louis Public School District excelling in his role as an instructional leader in public, charter, and private schools. In addition to his leadership role as principal, he has served as an assistant principal, academic director, and dean of students. He has developed complex scheduling and guidance programs, evaluated personnel, and participated in procedural and financial decisions.

Throughout his administrative career, Dr. Triplett has established a reputation as an extremely capable and effective school administrator who consistently displays compassion and professionalism. His enthusiasm and innovativeness distinguish him from all others.

JMCSS PREPARES FOR 13,000 MILES OF BUS ROUTES A DAY

JACKSON, Tenn. – On August 3, 114 Jackson-Madison County school buses will hit the road before the sun rises. The drivers will cover 13,000 miles in a day’s time shuttling thousands of anxious students to their first day of school then back home again.

In preparation for the first day of school, the Jackson-Madison County School System’s transportation maintenance team is inspecting the entire fleet, carefully going over each bus from grill to bumper. The district asks that parents join in on the commitment to safety on our school buses by sharing a few reminders with their students.

•The school bus is an extension of the school building. The rules of staying in their seats, treating classmates with respect and not being disruptive or distracting are imperative so the driver can concentrate on the road and operate their bus safely.

•A bus driver’s main priority is always safety. They are not responsible for discipline of students. Any disciplinary issues on the bus will be referred to the student’s principal.

•Riding your assigned bus, even if another bus passes by your stop, is crucial to maintaining student location and proper student count on each bus.

•For safety reasons, adults cannot get on a school bus. This is not allowed for the safety of everyone on the bus. If an adult needs to talk with a driver, he or she may approach from the driver’s window.

As routes are perfected and drivers and students learn the specifics of their stops, delays are expected at the beginning of the school year. The district asks for patience and understanding through this process.

If you have a question about busing, please, call your student’s school first. During morning and afternoon routes, most of the Transportation Department staff is on the road or unable to answer the phone as their priority is assisting drivers.

During the 2018-2019 school year, it is estimated Jackson-Madison County School buses will drive approximately 2,000,000 miles.

Jackson, Tenn. – Jackson State Community College will host an open house event Saturday, July 28 on the main campus at 2046 North Parkway. The campus will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day.

Brian Gann, Student Services vice president, sees this as an excellent opportunity for anyone considering the next step beyond high school, but especially the adult learner. “The Tennessee Reconnect grant is making the prospect of returning to college a reality for many West Tennessee Adults,” Gann said. “Any adult who never completed an associate degree can now come to college and get this credential tuition free.”

Everyone is welcome to come to Jackson State to take a tour of the campus, meet with faculty and staff, and learn more about financial aid options.

A number of faculty members will be on hand to talk to students and discuss classes. Students and staff will give guided tours and answer questions about campus life. Prospective students will also be able to visit most all areas of campus and get a feel for the campus and what Jackson State has to offer.

The library will also be open along with the writing center and academic assistance center.

Anyone attending this event should follow the signs on campus to the Student Center. Information about the campus along with guided tours will be located there.

The first Jamaican female (Dee-Jay) to win a Grammy award and achieve triple-platinum status is Marion Hall, formerly known as Lady Saw. She was born in Galina, Jamaica, a district in the parish of Saint Mary on July 12th,1972, and as a tomboy whatever the boys were doing they had to contend with Marion, but she also found a place singing in her church choir as a youth.

In late 2015 Marion completely gave her life to God, got baptized and now channeling her talent into something more all-powerful than she had ever experienced, she was able to be washed anew and now turns scripture teachings into songs. Riley Jenkins, Elvis Impersonator, to appear at Discovery Park of America UNION CITY, TN- In honor of the current Traveling Exhibition, The Science of Rock N Roll, which is currently on display at Discovery Park of America in Union City, TN, the park is having a party Saturday evening, July 28th. It’s called Rockin’ out at the Museum and the headliner is Riley Jenkins, a very popular and talented Elvis impersonator. The David Fontana Band will also play that evening. Tickets are $20 for Discovery Park members and $25 for all others. The ticket includes an entire evening of entertainment, appetizers and unlimited access to the Science of Rock N Roll exhibit.
