Steak & Potatoes Field Day Returns August 7 Plateau Agriculture and Forestry to be Highlighted at Regional Event CROSSVILLE, Tenn. — Everyone interested in Plateau-based agricultural enterprises is invited to attend the annual Steak and Potatoes Field Day sponsored by the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. Augustine School student Noah Brandt progresses to 2018 National Spelling Bee Semi-Finals in Maryland.

On May 31, 2018, Augustine School’s Noah Brandt competed in the 2018 National Spelling Bee. It is the largest iteration of the contest ever held. Tuesday was the first of a three-day competition in Maryland. With 519 middle school spellers competing, Noah Brandt, an eighth grader at Augustine School, has made it into the top 41 spellers, which progresses him to the semi final round airing on ESPN tomorrow. Noah’s teachers and fellow students are very proud of him and can’t wait to see him go even further.

Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Awards Annual Scholarships to Students Friday, June 1, 2018 – The Leadership Jackson Alumni Association (LJAA) announces three high school students in Jackson-Madison County have been awarded the annual alumni association scholarships. The Judy Renshaw Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Scholarship was awarded to Cole Cooper, University School of Jackson; Evan Holt, Madison Academic Magnet High School; and Emily Kuper, Home School. The students were presented awards at LJAA’s Quarterly Luncheon on Friday, June 1 at Jackson Energy Authority’s Training Facility, 320 Highway 45 Bypass. Each received $1,500 toward their higher education expenses.

Cooper and Kuper plan to attend Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, while Holt will continue her education at Union University.

“Part of Leadership Jackson Alumni Association’s mission is supporting emerging leaders through educational programs and we recognize this starts with the youth of our community,” said Jinny Culpepper, president, Leadership Jackson Alumni Association. “The Judy Renshaw Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Scholarship allows us to invest directly in education for the future leaders of Judy Renshaw, left, with award recipients Emily Kuper, Evan Holt and Cole Jackson, as well as show them support from their community. We Cooper are extremely proud of these recipients and look forward to seeing their growth both in education and leadership moving forward.”

The scholarship, funded through dues to the association and gifts, amounts to at least $1,500 and as much as $2,000 payable to the college or university during the student’s freshman year. Other projects funded by Leadership Jackson Alumni dues include quarterly alumni luncheons, professional development programs and “Comfort Critters,” stuffed animals used by emergency first responders in Jackson.

The Judy Renshaw Leadership Jackson Alumni Association Scholarship was named in honor of Judy Renshaw in 2013 for her more than 35 years of developing the Leadership Jackson program. Individuals and/or donors wishing to make a tax-deductible donation in Renshaw’s honor to the scholarship can do so through the chamber’s foundation.

“I am humbled and honored to have this scholarship bear my name but tremendously excited for the youth that will receive additional funding for their college education,” Renshaw said. “We have so many bright and talented youth eager to make a positive difference. Jackson will be in good hands with these future leaders as they accomplish their dreams.”

NURSING STUDENTS EARN 100 PERCENT PASS RATE ON LICENSURE EXAM Jackson, Tenn. (June 1, 2018) – Every student who graduated from Jackson State’s nursing program in 2017 passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) on his or her first attempt, an achievement that earned praise from the Tennessee Board of Nursing.

The NCLEX is a nation-wide exam for nursing school graduates to obtain a license, which allows them to practice. It is administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.

Sherry Richardson, nurse consultant with the Tennessee Board of Nursing, wrote a letter to Jackson State after students achieved the 100 percent pass rate, saying “the Board wishes to commend you and the faculty of the nursing program for this significant achievement and extends best wishes for continued success in the future.”

Jackson State typically has a high pass rate on the NCLEX, and it is not unusual for every student to pass. Now in its 27th year, the school’s nursing program has earned a reputation as one of most respected in the state, and it continues to enhance its offerings, said Dr. Leslie West Sands, Dean and Program Director of Nursing.

The Jim Moss Center for Nursing, which opened in 2015, features state-of-the-art labs and equipment that utilize the same technologies as hospitals. Equipment in the facility includes human obstetric, pediatric and adult simulators that enable faculty to simulate real-life scenarios.

The two-year registered nursing program also has a high employment rate. In a survey, 100 percent of those who responded reported being employed as a registered nurse within a year of graduation. (Two percent of graduates surveyed did not respond.)

Jackson State Community College provides accessible learning opportunities that enhance the lives of individuals, strengthen the workforce and empower the diverse communities of West Tennessee. UT Gardens’ June 2018 Plant of the Month: Elephant Ears With Giant Leaves and a Tropical Feel, These Plants Are Addicting SUBMITTED BY CAROL REESE, UT EXTENSION WESTERN REGION ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE SPECIALIST Many southern gardeners grew up with an “ordinary” green elephant ear (Colocasia esculenta) in the landscape, hardly worth a second glance. As more savvy gardeners became aware of the roles foliage textures play in a well-designed landscape, plants with large leaves were more appreciated. The movement morphed into a deservedly popular theme of creating a landscape with a bold tropical feel, and new forms of elephant ear began to appear in the marketplace. Even in colder parts of the country folks were willing to dig them and store in protected sites during winter, or simply purchase them new each summer. Breeders responded with a surge of cultivars displaying black, chartreuse or even variegated foliage. Most are not hardy beyond zone 8, but a few have demonstrated their hardiness through zone 7 unless the winter is particularly severe.

‘Black Magic’ was the first of the forms with dramatically dark foliage, which can range from purplish to truly glossy black forms such as ‘Black Coral’ and ‘Diamond Head’. If hardiness is desired, the form called ‘Illustris’ is often persistent through zone 7, and wellsited plants can even spread from the original plants so much as to be considered aggressive! Illustris does not present the solid dark leaf some prefer, with its bright green veins radiating from the center of the leaf. It is also not going to be as large as some of the other varieties, either in leaf size or in height.

For the gardener who wants a tall form, seek out the 6-footer called ‘Big Dipper’. The large leaves are supported by dramatic dark stems, and cup upwards to form a shallow bowl. A leaf may fill gradually with water during a light rain with no wind, until the weight of the water bends the stem just enough to dump its load. ‘Coffee Cups’ has even more steeply cupped leaves, which expose the gorgeous dark veins on the leaf underside. It is much less hardy, however, while Big Dipper may overwinter where well sited in zone 7.

Veins are the excitement in other cultivars such as the green-leafed form with richly purple veins called ‘Blue Hawaii’. ‘Elena’ has bright chartreuse leaves, with cranberry veins, and a lovely delicate cranberry edge to the leaves. ‘Chicago Harlequin’ has crazy striped stems as its claim to fame, while ‘Mojito’ sports bright green leaves richly splashed and speckled with black.

For a gee-whiz, good-golly, take-a-look-at-that-plant reaction, it’s got to be ‘Thailand Giant’ (Colocasia gigantea). With plenty of water and nutrients, this plant may reach 9 feet in height, with leaves that measure individually at 5 feet in length and 4 feet in width.

For best success with elephant ears other than Thailand Giant, generosity with water and nutrients also holds true. These tropical plants love moisture and nutrients, so while they don’t require a lot for survival, they will richly reward the gardener with a lavish hand. They can be grown in sun or light shade, but suffer in a hot sunny site if not given plenty of water. In fact, most of the C. esculenta are happy in wet sites, and good for pond margins, but be aware that C. gigantea will rot in these wet sites.

You can find various specimens of elephant ears on display at all of the UT Gardens sites: Knoxville, Jackson and Crossville.The gardener should be warned these plants can be addictive. One leads to another and another...

Park after Dark Experience Planned for Discovery Park of America Members UNION CITY, TN- Discovery Park of America in Union City, TN is hosting a very special “Park after Dark” for members only on Friday evening, June 15th from 5:30 until 9:30 pm. “People are always telling us that they would like to experience Discovery Park in the evening,” Event Director Lauren Jones said. “So, we decided, as a special treat for our members, to open the entire park on the evening of June 15th!” “If you aren’t already a member, this is a great time to join,” Jones said.

“And you can even purchase your annual membership pass that night at the ticket counter!”

“For anyone who hasn’t been to Discovery Park at night, there really is a different feel to it,” Jones said. “Plus, we’ll have five bounce houses up by the Children’s Discovery Garden, and we have other special treats planned, as well!”

For members who want to make an evening of it and have dinner at the park, the Cafe and Eats and Treats will be open for the guests that night. The Tower experience will be free, and the other attractions will be open with tickets available at the ticket counter. “The Earthquake Simulator, Starship Theater, the Escape Room and the traveling exhibit called The Science of Rock N Roll will all be available that night as well, and guests can purchase those tickets at the ticket counter.”

“Membership has its privileges,” Jones said. “We hope that all of our members will come out and enjoy an evening at Discovery Park…all the galleries and outside exhibits will be open, as well as the gift shop and restaurants,” Jones said. “There will be everything available that we have during the day, plus some special treats,” she added.

Michelle Moragne Opens Taylor Medical VISIT JACKSON TN LAUNCHES Clinic Dr. Michelle Moragne came to the Jackson State Tennessee Small Business Development Center in PASSPORTS! March 2016, seeking help in opening a medical clinic. She had been an experienced practitioner for many years; as Michelle began researching how to set out on her own, she found that there was an area where she could buy and renovate a building, making it not only a good opportunity, but a good long-term investment.

During weekly meetings with the TSBDC, she developed a viable business plan to present to any lender.

Ultimately, a local bank agreed to lend her $220,000 for the purchase and the renovation. Closing on the financing and ramping up the business was a year-long process.

Michelle opened Taylor Medical Clinic as a sole proprietorship in late February, investing $180,000 of her savings in addition to the bank loan. She seems to be well on her way to breaking even or showing a small profit in the first year; she reports having seen 1,339 patients and averaging $15,000 per month in the first nine months.

Taylor Medical Clinic maintains a 40 percent repeat client base; patients range from seniors who need weekly care to children who come once a year for their checkups. Its financial statements indicate an excellent opportunity for growth, and it brings in additional income by leasing office space on the second floor. Four new jobs were created since the clinic opened.

Next year, Michelle plans to add pulmonary services and bring in yet another technician who will administer the testing. She estimates this will add $50,000 in income.

JOIN TENNESSEE MEN’S HEALTH NETWORK IN CELEBRATION OF MEN’S HEALTH MONTH June is Men’s Health Month and groups across the state and around the country are joining Tennessee Men’s Health Network (TMHN) and the national Men’s Health Network in celebration of this awareness period. The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to heighten the awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of disease among men and boys.

The month is anchored by International Men’s Health Week, June 11-17, the week ending on Father’s Day, a special awareness period recognized by Congress and the Tennessee General Assembly each year.

Additional support comes from all 50 governors who declare Men’s Health Week in their states.

Men’s Health Month is celebrated with screenings, health fairs, media appearances, and other health education and outreach activities. These events help ensure a healthier future for men and their families.

“While men continue to live sicker and die younger,” Mike Leventhal, Executive Director for TMHN explained, “awareness and outreach efforts like those conducted in June reach men and their families where they live, work, play, and pray. Additionally, Men’s Health Network has developed a new program called Wear BLUE, designed to raise awareness and educate men, women, and their families of the need to end the silent crisis in men’s health.

Workplaces, community groups, places of worship, and others are encouraged to host a Wear BLUE event in their community. Information, tools, and resources can be found at www.wearblueformen.com.

Health care providers, public policy makers, the media, and individuals can use Men’s Health Month and the Wear BLUE program to encourage men and boys to seek regular medical advice and early treatment for disease. In celebration of Men’s Health Month, MHN is launching a number of larger awareness campaigns including ones focused on fibromyalgia, incontinence, fertility, bladder cancer, uninsured issues, public service announcements, and prostate health.

“With prostate, cardiovascular, mental, and other health issues adversely impacting the lives of our men, awareness periods like this help end the silence surrounding men’s health and make it OK for men and boys to talk and take action about their health,” shared Judy Seals-Togbo, Mid-South Program Director for Women Against Prostate Cancer (www.womenagainstprostatecancer.org).

“This Father’s Day we all should try to help the men we love take charge of their health. MHN has resources and programs that can help them do that,” added Dr. Tom Rogers, M.D., TMHN Advisory Board member and Medical Director of Performance Medicine.

Representative Jimmy Eldridge To Partner With TDCI For June 9 Shred Event in Jackson State & local agencies join forces to offer free shredding and drug take back services (NASHVILLE) – State Representative Jimmy Eldridge (R-Jackson) is partnering with the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance’s (TDCI) Division of Consumer Affairs and local law enforcement on Saturday, June 9, 2018 to host the Jackson Community Shred and Drug Take Back Event promoting identity theft prevention and consumer protection. Jackson residents are encouraged to attend for free document shredding and a convenient prescription drug drop-off.

“Identity theft is now one of the fastest-growing crimes in our country and protecting personal information is key to ensuring you don’t become a victim,” said Representative Eldridge. “This community event offers peace of mind for Jackson-area residents by providing a safe, efficient way to dispose of sensitive documents and outdated prescription drugs. I’d like to thank the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance for providing this valuable service to our community.”

Documents suggested for shredding include: outdated credit card statements, utility bills, investment documents, tax forms, loan documents, medical records, insurance documents, employment documents and more.

If disposing of prescription bottles, be sure to mark out any personal information on the label. Educational materials will also be available for attendees.
