In last weeks edition we reported that with Ray Jones licenses were valid from purchase date until Send photos to: numberonecoach@hotmail.com the end of February. However, the next day or 731-694-8614 TWRA announced new guidelines for hunting and fishing licenses.

For the first time they will start lasting from the purchase date for one full year. This was a much needed change that most people always thought was the right thing to do.

All funds from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses go to support the Tennessee wildlife conservation programs and its’ officers. Without hunters and fishermen purchasing licenses we would not be able to enjoy the great conservation areas in West Tennessee.

Losing a loved one to senseless death is a hurt that never heal. So many families are destroyed, so many families use drugs to cope, so many people stop loving, so many people hurt beyond understanding and that leads to mental illness. But the worst of all, they lose faith.

But those of us that don’t lose faith, those of us that understand their pain, those of us that know God is real and know He see our pain hear our prayers and we also know He will never Leave us without a Comforter.

Sheriff John Mehr is having his 61st Community Meeting this Thursday evening (March 10t) at 6:30 at the Madison Hall Community Center, 936 Steam Mill Ferry Road.

Mike and Marion Hines will host the event, which begins with a pot luck supper.

The Sheriff will give an update on the new jail and explain his current budget.

As always, a Q & A session will follow with no subjects or questions that are “off-limits.”

Looking ahead, his 62nd Community Meeting is set for Monday evening, March 28 at 6:30, at the Browns Church Ruritan Club, 181 McCleary Road.

Lee Tomlinson will host and it will begin with a meal.

County Commissioners from each District are invited to attend.

Local artist Callie Wright was selected as the February 2022 Hub City Hero.

Wright, a student at Union University majoring in Social Work, is a native of Louisville, KY. Wright combines her social work with her passion for art and paints portraits of those who she says are “people not seen in the community.” Wright started her art project in the summer of 2021 after connecting with the organization “Faces of Mankind” based in California.

“I have a heart for people and I think people have dignity and value, and I want others to see it as well,” said Wright. “And as an artist, this is my way to say that.”

Wright says that she works closely with Area Relief Ministries and would get photos of the men there and paint them. She would share the art work with them. Wright is hoping to plan an art show soon in order to showcase her work.

Wright wants to give back by donating proceeds of her artwork to benefit ARM. “We may not often think of an artist as being a hero, but a hero sees the good in humanity,” said Mayor Scott Conger. “Callie sees that good and transfers it to canvas through her paintings.”

“Hub City Heroes” selflessly and steadily give of their time and talent to improve the lives of others in the community. Recognition as a hero is one small way to thank these public servants for their efforts and it gives honorees the opportunity to raise awareness for causes that are important to them.

State Rep. Robin Smith resigns after federal wire fraud charge

By Chuck Morris- www.wsmv.com/ Published: Mar. 7, 2022 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - State Rep. Robin Smith has resigned from her House seat after being charged with wire fraud in federal court in Nashville.

In a letter to House Speaker Cameron Sexton, Smith said that she is “resigning from House 26 effective immediately.” District 26 is in Hamilton County.

The charge against Smith was filed on Friday in the Middle District of Tennessee.

Smith and several other House members had their offices inside the Cordell Hull Building searched by federal agents last year.

A Davidson County Grand Jury has indicted 35-year-old Martez Smith on 5 counts of rape of a child, 1 count of incest, 1 count of rape, and 1 count of aggravated sexual battery. There are two victims, a child born in 1997, and another born in 2016. The alleged incidents occurred between 2003 and 2019. At this time of this indictment, Smith was already in jail pending trial on multiple drugs and weapons charges. A bond of an additional $150,000 was added for the new indictment.

2nd victim dies as a result of 2021 shooting in Humboldt

March 7, 2022 WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff HUMBOLDT, Tenn. — A second person has died as a result of last year’s shooting at a basketball game.

On Nov. 30 several law enforcement agencies responded to a call of shots fired at Humboldt High School during a basketball game that left one dead and two others injured.

According to the Humboldt Police Department, a second victim involved in the shooting has died.

Xavier Clifton, (r) who was airlifted from the scene, died on Sunday at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital from his injuries related to the shooting.

Jadon Hardiman turned himself into the Humboldt police Department the day after the shooting. He’s being held in the Gibson County Criminal Justice Complex.

Carmen Wilson, 20, was crowned Miss Lane College February 27, on the campus of Lane College. Carmen will move on to represent Lane College at the Miss Tennessee Volunteer Pageant.

Wilson takes over the role of Miss Lane College from Mia Townsend 21, from Chattanooga TN. Wilson competed against Townsend in 2021 and placed as First Runner-Up to Miss Lane College.

Mia crowned her successor at Graves Auditorium on Sunday and presented her with a bouquet of roses and a trophy.

Mr. Lane College is Corrion Davis, a senior majoring in Accounting from Gary, Indiana.

Corrion is a member of the Student Government Association, Lead Residential Assistant, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), National Forensic League Champion, and the Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature.

State Commissioner Mental Health visits new Madison County Cont’d from page 1

“State Senator Ferell Hail, who chairs the Senate committee overseeing mental health, said “being able to visit and see what takes place and how the state money is spent is important” and more than that, the lives that are changed by these dollars. It’s important when we spend dollars we see results and what we have seen here in Madison County is an excellent example of well spent state dollars.”

Local state Senator Ed Jackson said “it’s making changing lives instead of people being incarcerated and keep coming back in the criminal justice system. People are now able to get the help they need with training, counseling and begin a productive life again.”

Commissioner Williams said “Madison County is an example for the rest of the state and country when it comes to law enforcement dealing with mental health issues. We know that when you’ve struggling with mental health and you’re not involved in treatment, that sometimes bad things happen because your not in a good place.”

What we also know is going to nail is not always here you need to go when you have mental health issues, and so programs like here with transportation diversion training and counseling can make the difference,” added Williams.

Construction of the new jail is expected to be completed in April and the facility will open after they are able to move in and finish hiring staff.

OP-ED: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Supports the Expedient Confirmation of a Black Woman to Become the Next United States Supreme Court Justice NNPA NEWSWIRE

Steeped in far more than historical significance, the confirmation of a Black woman to the highest court of the land would represent yet another significant step in America fulfilling its promise to African Americans who helped build this country.

The appointment of a Black woman to the United States Supreme Court is a long time coming. In fact, it was 55 years ago in 1967 that Justice Thurgood Marshall — the first African American — was appointed to the nation’s high court and 40 years ago in 1981 when Justice Sandra Day O’Connor — the first woman ― was appointed to the Supreme Court. Rather than a long time coming, for many, this appointment is a long time overdue.

Either way, the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® stand in support of the Biden-Harris Administration in fulfilling this promise.

Founded in 1908

by African American women who were service-minded scholars, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is comprised of professional women who have succeeded despite unimaginable odds to lead in every area of human endeavor. Sadly, however, there are still “firsts” to be achieved and glass ceilings that still must be shattered.

We are encouraged by the fact that with so

many Black women serving as attorneys, state and federal judges, law clerks, public defenders, prosecutors, corporate counsel, law professors and non-profit lawyers ― all fighting on the frontlines of the ongoing struggle for justice and equality in America ― there has never been more qualified Black women ready to meet this moment. It has only been the glaring absence of opportunity that has stunted our progress and impeded the Supreme Court from reflecting the true diversity of these United States. We are now waiting with resigned anticipation that this glaring omission will be corrected with President Biden’s commitment to nominate the first Black woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court by the end of February.

We stand united in the continued fight for Black women to be represented in all arenas important to the progress of our nation, and we are ready to walk arm-in-arm with this administration every step of the way as some of the very best and brightest Black women judges and attorneys are identified, vetted, interviewed, and presented to the United States Senate Judiciary Committee.

Finally, we support swift confirmation hearings under the leadership of Senator Dick Durbin, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman, leading to a fair vote for the chosen candidate. We also call for the highest level of

professionalism befitting the institution and solemnity of the U.S. Senate and worthy of the ultimate nominee’s qualifications and accomplishments for this sacred service.

To witness a Black woman confirmed as a United States Supreme Court Justice for the first time in the Court’s 233-year history will merely affirm what we all already know to be true. There are countless Black women in the legal field who have distinguished themselves as brilliant jurists, fierce advocates, and venerable legal scholars and made tremendous sacrifices to shape the laws of the land and help secure justice for all. Charlotte E. Ray would be one case in point. Attorney Ray was the first African American woman lawyer in the United States. She graduated from Howard University Law School in 1872 upon gaining admission under the name C.E. Ray and was the first woman admitted to the District of Columbia Bar 150 years ago.

Described as a woman of “decided ability” and “one of the best lawyers on corporations in the country,” she was unable to sustain her legal practice and was eventually forced to return to teaching.

However, Ray’s historic bar admission was the precedent that set the stage for the admission of countless other women to state bars around the country.

This confirmation of an African American woman Supreme

Court Justice will be a moment in time when at least one African American woman will no longer be forced to abandon her dream and live beneath her privilege. We know for certain that this hallowed institution will be better with the appointment of an African American woman. That fact serves us all well.

Accountability

There are many influences in our life that urge us to give thought to how we are truly accountable for our actions. Occasionally, we need to look back and see where we may have made better choices and how our lives have evolved since that time.

The blame game accomplishes little but to promote strife and discord between injured or affected parties. As a plant manager for many years, I discouraged that activity from day one from all those on staff, especially those in a supervisory capacity.

There was significant pushback at first, but in the long run it translated to harmony and cooperation among all members of the staff.

Seniors, very soon you are going to be moving on to what the world has to offer. You can most assuredly expect to find disappointment and frustration as your plans may not work right out of the gate.

This applies to whether you choose the post-secondary path, decide to go to work, or even start your own business. If you have developed a growth mindset, you will find that you will be able to overcome challenges coming your way. If you need help, ask for it and learn how to learn while you are in school as life is a harsh teacher. Just remember that kindness, gratitude, and humility will serve you well once you embark on your career path.

OWNERSHIP This is my third COVID related spring as an educator and I have substitute taught it rural country schools as well as Jackson Madison County School System. I have witnessed how a victim mindset has impacted students and it seems to be losing its influence during the current semester. Most of the students I have asked have told me that distance or remote learning did not work for them. I have urged them to utilize the resources available through the schools as well as the public libraries to restore their competitive balance.

Just witness the many positive changes that have taken place in JMCSS which proves that a growth mindset works. The Commissioner of Education Penny Schwinn visited Peabody HS in Trenton to listen to what students had to say about innovation in their segment of the education realm. Governor Bill Lee is emphasizing Early Childhood education as well as post-secondary opportunities and CTE across the state. We should be grateful that he has included West TN in the mix of funds to enhance these activities.

With all these positives taking place in our region, students take ownership of your future and the future of our communities. I cannot close without a word of encouragement to all those that have had a part in bringing a new Pope School to the finish line. It is my hope and prayer that this time it will be done, as they have earned the right to have a new school to provide opportunities for the next generation of leaders, movers, and shakers in this region.

Let’s teach accountability, ownership, and promote a growth mindset, and model it for our students!

Area Sorority Sisters Attend AKA Conference AKA Sorority host in-person conference in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Thousands of members of the southeast region of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated flooded into Memphis last week for their annual conference.

Region Director, Mitzi Dease Paige welcomed almost 6,000 members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated into Memphis for the sorority’s South East Regional Conference at the new Renasant Convention Center.

“You can expect to see a sea of pink and green invade the bluff city,” Paige said. “We are so thrilled to be able to come to Memphis.”

While in Memphis, AKA members focused on community service, including donating pajamas to children in local hospitals.

“The fact that they are here and the fact that this is a record-breaking conference for the southeastern region is historic,” Paige said.

The AKA Regional Convention ran from March 1-6 and included sosority members from Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee.

“This weekend has been absolutely amazing,” said Tori Haliburton, formerly of Crockett County, TN. “We haven’t seen each other in the flesh in two years. To see our sisters from the South Easter Region of Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee all in one space has been awesome! The City of Memphis rolled out “Pink” Carpet! Our theme for the conference was “The Grand Finale: Rolling Down the River with Excellence!”

is a poet and spoken word artist residing in Salt Lake City, UT. Born and raised in Kansas, she began writing at the age of 12 to cope with the relentless bullying she endured throughout elementary and middle school. Although she originally used poetry as an outlet, it quickly became a passion and an escape for her. As an spoken word artist and writer, Jamera NaQuai is a blend of social justice, empowerment, and reflection. She uses her words to discuss race, sexuality, religion, gender, and love while synchronously chronicling her experiences navigating the world as a black woman.

Jamera NaQuai aims to create work that further develops healthy and constructive conversations and social innovation. Additionally, Jamera makes a conscious effort to promote uncomfortable confrontations with one’s own biases and learned beliefs and values.

Jamera got her first poem published at the age of 16 after participating in a writing competition for her Creative Writing class. Since then she has performed at various poetry slams, events, and open mics. Jaidynn Askin (15 pts & 10 rebs) and Ti’mia Lawson (13 pts & 11 rebs) both posted double-doubles for the 23-2 Lady Hawks. South Side will face Page County in the semi-finals on Friday.

Bemis Historical Society will hold a regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 15, at 6:00 p.m. at the Bemis Mill Village Museum located at 2 North Missouri Street in Jackson.

In 2022, we are celebrating the centennial anniversary of the Bemis Museum which was built as the Bemis Auditorium in 1922. Black History Poster Celebration at Boys and Girls Club of Jackson Councilman Ernest Brooks was the guest speaker for the Boys and Girls Club of Jackson Black History Poster Celebration. Clubmembers made posters of famous African Americans from Jackson, Tennessee.

City Hall.

The Boys and Girls Club of Jackson held its first annual poster contest program. Club members made posters about famous African Americans from Jackson,Tennessee. The winners from the various age categories poster will be showcased at the City Hall in our of the 200 Bicentennial.
