The annual Carver High School Super Saturday was held last week with alumni and friends coming from all over the United States to share good times and with Ray Jones fun. The event is sponsored by the alumni SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO association and features the museum along with numberonecoach@hotmail.com or 731-694-8614. bands and cook outs. Jefferson street is the place where it all started for many of these excited people who got to see friends that walked the halls with them years ago.

Carver is the school where blacks attended before school consolidation started in 1970. There is a proud tradition that carries down through generations who did not even attend school there.

The teachers were referred to as professors and students carried themselves as college students who wanted something out their education. They were held to high standards and did Mary Windfield, David Fuller, Mr. Bowles and Tic.. not want to disappoint the professors. There is a number of students who went on to be doctors, lawyers,high ranking military people, college professors and many other professions. Those were the good old days and the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee was blessed to have family and friends walk the neighborhood streets just the same as they did when they attended Carver Make your plans to attend because you don’t have to be an alumni to fell the love shared by everyone.

Man charged with attempted first-degree murder after Jackson fraternity party shooting CASSANDRA STEPHENSONÊ|ÊJACKSON SUN - Aug. 31, 2019 A man is in custody with an attempted first degree murder charge after allegedly shooting another man twice outside a Jackson fraternity party Monday.

Keyshawn Fouse, 20, is being held in Madison County Jail in lieu of a $200,000 bond.Ê Fouse allegedly approached a McCorry Street residence at around midnight and asked Mario Wilson, a guest at the party, to speak with him outside, according to court documents.

Both men were standing on the house’s front lawn when Fouse allegedly shot Wilson twice in the chest with a black semiautomatic handgun. Wilson told police that Fouse stood over him as he lay on the ground and attempted to shoot him again, but remarked that the gun jammed, court documents say.

When Fouse walked toward a vehicle — allegedly to get another firearm — Wilson ran away. He was taken to a local hospital where he received emergency surgery.

Suspects face Charges in Brownsville Drug Bust The 28th District Drug Task Force, with the assistance of Brownsville Police Department Patrol Division was working hard recently on Otis Street in Brownsville.Ê Agents served a search warrant following a short investigation into the selling of crack cocaine.Ê Agents seized approximately 2.0 grams of crack cocaine, 20 grams of marijuana, an ounce of an unknown substance being represented to be methamphetamine in the ice form, electronic scales and proceeds of the sale of drugs.Ê Two persons (One currently out in bond for selling crack cocaine) are in the custody of Sheriff Billy Garrett at Haywood Sheriff awaiting arraignment.

Both subjects are facing charges of possession of a schedule II and VI controlled substance with intent to sell, possession of a counterfeit controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

16-Year-Old Facing Two Counts of Aggravated Robbery for West Nashville Carjacking 9/1/2019 - Nashville -- West Precinct detectives are charging 16-year-old Antoine Maupin (right) with two counts of aggravated robbery for the August 13 carjacking of a Toyota Camry from two 21-year-olds at their apartment on Belle Valley Drive.

Maupin and escaped teenager Lacories Howse, 16, were arrested in the car by Juvenile Crime Task Force officers on the night of August 15. Also in the vehicle were a 9 millimeter pistol reported stolen out of Indianapolis and a ski mask.

At the time of Maupin’s arrest, he was in Department of Children’s Services custody on a trial home visit and was wearing an ankle monitor. The aggravated robbery charges are the result of an analysis of records from the monitoring device.

Howse had escaped from the TrueCore facility on Stewarts Ferry Pike on July 25th after scaling a fence.

Tennessee pastor found guilty of raping, abusing child August 29, 2019 - MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee pastor has been found guilty of 24 counts involving child sex abuse in the first of three trials.

News outlets report a jury found 40-year-old Ronnie Gorton guilty Wednesday on charges including sexual battery and statutory rape.

The 18-year-old victim told jurors the abuse started the day he moved in with Gorton and his wife in 2017. He said Gorton justified his actions by citing a Bible verse which said “holding each other is just a way to show love.”

Gorton’s sentencing hearing will start in November.

The pastor at the now-defunct Awakening Church in Atoka still faces trials involving two other teenagers who accused him of rape. One was 12 at the time.

Gang Infestations Where in the world did the ideal of gangs come from and how have they grown and become the norm for many areas? We hear that the public schools are being invaded by gang members and are now considered to be unsafe environments. A nonpublic school is usually costly therefore not easily accessible to most potential gang members. The problems is not the schools, it is the neighborhoods. The deprivation and poverty coupled with fear, low-self esteem, little hope for change and desperation is the feeding ground for growing gangs. Who is planting and cultivating gangs in these areas? These people do not manufacturer guns and cannot afford to buy them.

They do not cultivate drugs, yet this is where drugs and guns are plentiful. Prostitution is another crime familiar to this area financed by those from other areas exploiting the disadvantaged.

The problem with the children is that this is the darkness they were born into. This is a generational curse.

There are generations after generations born into gangs and parented by their gang-banging parents. This is a dark place where most people stumble but do not know what is making them stumble. They were born stumbling and see stumbling as the norm around them. The have no hope nr do most even know there is a light of day somewhere. This is the new trail of tears leading to more poverty, prisons terms, school drop outs, single parenting, self-hatred, destruction and premature deaths. They sell drugs for drug lords after being given drugs to become hooked into both the selling and the usages. Others are from more affluent neighborhoods are getting rich off of those who are disadvantaged. Yet, the hood dwellers bear all of the shame and guilt. How do those who are truly humane help them change their plight? The problems facing the public schools start with low and or inappropriate opportunities to make a descent living to establish a safe home environment.

Educate the whole nation on traps, snares, and stumbling blocks caused by helplessness, hopelessness, anger, poverty and fear. Let them know that substance alters the mind and makes it work against the freedom and healthy functions of the person, their families and friends. Tell them about the destruction caused by legal and illegal drugs, drug-lords including alcohol, tobacco, vapor and weed. Exposing the truth concerning the conditions and the way out. Ideas about using what they have and their skills to start a pathway to a better life. For many. gangs are their protection and hope for survival. It is the same structure as the political parties pit against each other for power and greed rather than uniting together for the good of the whole. Division causes self-destruction at all levels. It is still about the Red and the Blue. Change needs to start at the top an trickle down just like this evil has done. Let try and rectify the negative and give equal attention to the positive efforts of a few to give more hope to others.

Tuesday the library hosted a card sign-up event, presented by City Councilman Ernest Brooks, local book clubs, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.

Mayor Scott Conger gave a few remarks at the event as well.

“We hope that more kids get library cards, we know that children who are read to, that have library cards do better in school and we’re here to promote that,” said Jackson City Councilman Ernest Brooks.

The library is also offering ‘Food for Fines’ and ‘Fine Free’, in which you can return any materials that are long overdue or bringnon-perishable food items, without incurring fines.

WORKING TOGETHER TO MAKE EDUCATION RELEVANT!

BY DON POLLEY I had the occasion to hear Mr. Ray Washington give his first presentation on JMCSS at a Monday meeting of the Jackson Old Hickory Rotary Club. He and I are both members.

I was fortunate enough to be at the “media” table with Ms. Lasherica Thornton, who published a great article in her newspaper. I also spoke with Ms. Stephanie Fernandez with WBBJ News.

It is important to have dedicated articulate leader to promote what the school system is working to achieve and highlight the gains. It is also important for media outlets to keep the public informed as to what is going on in their public schools.

“Teachers, principals, everybody extends themselves beyond a regular day.” Washington said. “It’s a lot of dedicated people who want to get it right.”

If you have been following my articles you will know that I promote literacy and workforce development and am very impressed with the CTE programs offered through JMCSS. Everyone does not want to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree or beyond. Having access to alternate options and opportunities is very important.

Children that grow up in stressful environments tend to have more emotional and behavioral problems according to research. Paul Tough’s new book, Helping Children Succeed: What Works and Why. In his slim book he pulls together decades of social science research on the impacts of poverty and trauma on kid’s brains and behaviors.

CTE gives students a focus as to what it takes to obtain the type of certification to earn a living wage in the community, they live in. Education is vitally important to achieving success in their quest.

Mr. Washington pointed out that some students don’t see the relevancy of education. Its not a majority, but its too many. The state has identified 16 clusters of Career and Technical Education (CTE) in which JMCSS has 13 areas, including teaching, welding, nursing, and manufacturing. Let’s move forward together and work to close the skills gap one student at a time! The district offers CTE for 3,000 students in the five high schools.

Beaten But Not Broken: A Remarkable Story of Survival and Triumph “The scan shows a lot of blood on the left side of your brain. You need emergency surgery. There is a chance you may die during the procedure, or survive but lose your ability to speak or move the right side of your body.”Ê The year was 2008. The news came just as she was preparing to fly halfway across the world to see her dying father one last time. Her thoughts also flew to her 2 young children waiting at home, oblivious to the nightmare unfolding. The past 15 years seemed unforgiving, and this was the icing on the cake.

Years of physical abuse ended her marriage 9 years beforehand, leaving her with full custody of the children, ages 6 and 2. She found herself alone in a foreign country, shunned by her Catholic family for breaking marriage vows, working long punishing hours as a pediatrician to make ends meet in a job where she was overwhelmed and unappreciated.Ê Stress and exhaustion took a toll on her health as she dealt with depression, a thyroid disorder, obesity, pre-diabetes, and hypertension.ÊShe miraculously survived a ruptured aneurysm in her brain but lost her father to cancer, as well as the 7-year relationship that had once given her back a sense of self-worth.

She describes that period as hitting rock bottom but surviving a medical catastrophe which statistically claims many lives also made her realize that she was given a second chance in life.ÊNow the choice was hers: do or die.

The road to recovery was excruciatingly painful and difficult, yet filled with valuable lessons. Along with her steadfast faith, Dr. Marga acknowledges that in order to heal the body, one must first heal the psyche. In her words, “Never underestimate the power of the human mind.”Ê This became the foundation of her books and programs which bring hope and inspiration to so many. She has helped clients reverse Type 2 diabetes as well as reclaim their birthright to greatness, living the life of their dreams.Ê “Nothing brings me more joy than to see someone who was once broken live life to the fullest.” A story of survival paving the way for the transformation of others helps make this world a better place, and many are ever grateful for it.

Bolivar City Councilman facing lawsuit a no-show in court - C ’ 1 ONT D FROM PAGE

Joy was supposed to be in court Tuesday morning to address the lawsuit, but he never showed.

The man who filed the lawsuit didn’t want to be identified as he sat patiently waiting in Fayette County civil court waiting to confront Joy. “He was contracted to do the heating and air for my whole house,” he said. “It was two three-tons and one four-ton.”

He’s suing Joy and Joy Heating and Air because he claims Joy didn’t install the agreed upon HVAC units at his home, which is still under construction in Fayette County.

He said Joy installed HVAC units that were a smaller tonnage than he paid for, forcing him to hire a new contractor to fix a multitude of problems that followed.

“Mr. Joy was paid by checks,” he said. “Throughout the whole process, he was giving me invoices, and I paid him, according to the invoices.”

He said he was aware Joy had been indicted in Hardeman County for overcharging the county $1,600 for HVAC units he installed in several county buildings.

“I just simply told him, I said, ‘Mr. Joy, please, whatever happened in Hardeman County is Hardeman County, but please do my house according to as discussed,’” he said.

But he said Joy didn’t live up to his part of the bargain.
