JSCC Family Festival Canceled

Jackson, Tenn. (Sept. 27, 2021) – The family festival event planned at Jackson State Community College for Saturday, October 9, has been canceled.

The festival was initially meant to be an extension of the KJ100+5K bike ride and run and to offer a more family-oriented appeal for the event. The timing of the event during fall break and organizational concerns were cited as reasons for the cancelation.

The KJ100+5K will still be held Saturday, October 9, with the bike ride beginning at 8 a.m. and the 5K starting at 9 a.m. Information about and registration for the ride and run is located at jscc.edu/kj100.

Money raised will go to scholarships and financial assistance for students at JSCC. More than $40,000 has been raised over the life of the event to support students of the college.

JPD needs the community’s assistance finding a homicide suspect

On Saturday, 9/25/2021 around 9pm the Jackson Police Department responded to a report of an assault taking place at 2051 Hollywood Drive.

Officers found Mary Kelly, a 70-year-old woman, unresponsive at this location. A witness told officers that Randall Lee Rose, a 58-year-old male, was assaulting Ms. Kelly and then fled the scene on foot in a wooded area between Old Hickory Blvd. and North Parkway.

Rose is wanted for First Degree Murder at this time.

Officers are continuing to search for Rose and asks if anyone has information on his whereabouts to call the Jackson Police Department at 731-425-8400 or Crime Stoppers at 731-424-TIPS(8477).

Singer R Kelly has been convicted by a jury in New York on charges of racketeering and sex trafficking at the end of a six-week trial.

The jury returned its guilty verdict in a Brooklyn courtroom on Monday afternoon, after less than a day of deliberations.

“To the victims in this case, your voices were heard and justice was finally served,” Acting U.S. Attorney Jacquelyn Kasulis (L) said Monday outside the Brooklyn courthouse , where a jury convicted the 54-year-old R&B star on all nine counts of sex trafficking and racketeering following less than two days of deliberations.

The verdict “sends a loud message to survivors of sexual violence,” says Erinn Robinson, press secretary for the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network, in a statement to USA TODAY. “Today’s verdict was made possible by their courage and persistence in being heard, and we thank them for their resilience during a difficult and very public process.”

On September 23, Haywood County Schools lost a wonderful administrator, coach, and mentor in Tony Lambert. Coach Lambert began as an assistant principal at Haywood High School in the fall of 2019. While at Haywood High School, Coach Lambert’s impact on students was evident from his influence in the building as well as on the sidelines as an assistant coach for the Tomcat basketball team.

Coach Lambert’s impact was also felt throughout West Tennessee from his time as a player at Freed-Hardeman to his years coaching in Humboldt, Chester County, and Madison County.

While we will feel his absence for a long time in Haywood County, we know his memory and leadership will still continue to guide our students.

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department confirms two additional COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the total to 287 in Madison County. The newest deaths include: 86-year-old male (died 9/22/21) 92-year-old male (died 9/23/21) The health department has received positive test results for 130 more cases of COVID-19 since Friday, Sept. 24, 2021. We now have 17,619 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Madison County.

By Damon Hewitt, The Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under the Law (Washington, D.C.) — Bipartisan negotiations for a compromise on police reform broke down Wednesday, officially ending talks on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. The bill emphasized de-escalation tactics, banned police techniques like chokeholds and some no-knock warrants, ended qualified immunity and enhanced the ability of the Justice Department to prosecute officers for civil rights violations.

Black people and other communities of color live in constant fear that discriminatory policing will end their lives. Every person of conscience in our nation knows that we desperately need police accountability measures. Police shootings in this country continue at a rate of over a thousand a year, or almost three people each day. Yet, after the immeasurable pain of loss and the largest protests for racial justice in our nation’s history, today’s defeat was snatched from the jaws of victory by forces who are not accountable to communities of color and who clearly had no intent to support meaningful accountability.

George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, their families, and other victims and survivors of police violence deserved better from our lawmakers.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – To celebrate National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday, Sept. 28, Secretary of State Tre Hargett encourages Tennesseans to register to vote, check their voter registration status and show friends, coworkers and neighbors how to register online in minutes.

“It’s never been easier to register to vote in Tennessee and our office is excited to lead the effort to help all eligible voters in our great state get registered,” said Secretary Hargett. “We are doing this with college voter registration tailgates and by working with businesses, non-profits and civic organizations across the state through our Your Vote Matters program.”

This month, the Secretary of State’s office is working with student volunteers, university and athletic department staff, student government associations, campus organizations and local county election commissions at Tennessee’s nine Division I Public Universities conducting voter registration drives on campus.

Now Is The Time To Step Up

In my last article I spoke of the importance of unity and how together we can make a lasting change in our schools, our community, and in our future.

I am encouraged by the changes that have taken place within the school system and eagerly wait for what lies ahead for the students of the Class of 2022 and beyond.

Growth does not come without some “growing pains” as all stakeholders in the process begin to recognize the impact, as well as the importance of their role in the successful education of a student.

Teachers have a heart for their students and I have never met a teacher that did not take ownership of their classroom.

The students that come to school to learn embrace that and look forward to the challenges that lie ahead for them in a particular class. Other students are unsure of their capabilities and try to stay under the “radar” and just get through the class. Then there are some students that simply have no interest in learning or doing anything more than being disruptive, disrespectful, and take away valuable class time from both fellow students and instructors.

Fall break is right around the corner and these students need to take an accounting of their status in the academic realm as well as begin to take a serious look at what the future will have in store for them post-graduation. I know from experience that the future looks a lot different at 21 than it did when you were 18.

Our world is changing at a much more rapid pace that ever before and if you are unable to learn how to learn; be prepared, as life will teach you some harsh lessons. Smartphones are much like a moth being drawn to a light; not sure what the attraction is, but many seem to be doing it so there must be something there.

Be supportive of your teachers, administrators, and educators. Give them the respect they are due and watch them improve your self-esteem and enable you to raise your expectations to a level you once thought was unattainable.

There is room at the table for all who choose to align themselves with opportunity. Challenge yourself, raise the bar to a level you must reach up to grasp. If you simply step over opportunity, one day you may realize that the path of least resistance too often leads to regret. Just remember that no one can do you better than you can!

Cont’d from page 2 This year, despite the COVID pandemic and virtual classes, over 200 students submitted writings to express how violence impacts their lives. From those submitted, ten girls and ten boys were selected as school ambassadors and were invited to the luncheon.

The challenge gives students the opportunity to examine the impact of youth violence on their lives in classroom discussions and in written form by communicating what they think should be done to change our culture of violence. By encouraging young people to make personal commitments to do something about the problem, the program ultimately seeks to empower them to break cycles of violence in their homes, schools and communities.

Huntley named SIAC Player of the Week

ATLANTA, Ga. – Michael Huntley was named Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Football Offensive Player of the Week released by the league office on Monday.

OFFENSIVE – Michael Huntley, Lane College Quarterback | 5’11 | Senior | Montgomery, AL Huntley was 14-of-21 for 325 yards and three touchdowns including an 83yard strike to O’Joshua Bunton on 3rd and 13 in the fourth quarter to ice the game and lead the Dragons to a 45-35 win over Edward Waters.

DRAGONS KEEP ROLLING IN JACKSONVILLE

by Joel Worthington JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Dragons football team traveled to Florida this weekend for a matchup with new SIAC member Edward Waters.

Lane fell behind 5-0 in the first quarter after an Edward Waters safety and field goal but bounced back to score points on their next three drives.

First, it was Ike Brown taking it in the end zone from 1-yard out. Next, Anthony Evelyn scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 6-yard pass from Michael Huntley. Noah Shalzcapped the scoring streak on the next possession when he connected on a field goal from 22 yards out.

The Dragons never enjoyed much of a cushion as EWU continued to answer the visitor’s scoring, taking the lead 17-16 halfway through the second quarter.

The hosts were driving again as the first half was winding down until they stalled in the red zone with under 30 seconds remaining. A field goal attempt was blocked by Flakewood Tucker and recovered by Jeffrey Johnson who returned it 80 yards for a touchdown and a halftime lead, 24-17.

The Tigers added a field goal midway through the third quarter and Lane responded with an 11 play, 90-yard drive capped by a touchdown pass from Huntley to Evelyn from 17 yards out.

EWU came right back with a touchdown drive and two-point conversion to make it just a field goal lead for Lane.

The margin lasted almost no time as Evelyn took the ensuing kickoff back 91 yards to the house to push the lead back to 10 points.

O’Joshua Bunton iced the game in the fourth quarter when he went up over a defender to snag a Huntley pass on 3rd and 13 and took it 83 yards for a touchdown.

Huntley had a career day, finishing 14-of-21 for 325 yards and three touchdowns.

Evelyn ended with 290 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns.

Mackenzie Howard and Andrew Farmer led the defense. Howard had 11 total tackles while Farmer recorded 10 including one sack and a pass break up.

The Dragons defensive unit collected six sacks, including two from defensive lineman JaQuintis Summers.

After the spending the first month of the season on the road, Lane will play a home game next Saturday when they host Texas College for Homecoming. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM.

Strong Rushing Attack Plagues Tigers in Loss to SEMO

Wallace, Wallace Media Group CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – After earning a convincing win last week, the Tennessee State University Tigers (1-3, 0-1 OVC) were defeated 47-14 by the Southeast Missouri State University Redhawks (1-3, 1-0 OVC) in OVC action from Cape Girardeau, Mo. SEMO dominated the line of scrimmage rushing for 380 yards while only giving up 14 on the ground. The game was TSU head coach Eddie George’s first career OVC matchup as a head coach.

The TSU defense kept their team in the game employing a bend but not break approach.

They held SEMO to three field goals and a lone touchdown by running back Geno Hess (25 rushes 209 yards and three TDs). The Tiger offense only could muster up 92 first half yards and was shut out.

The Tigers will take on Austin Peay State University on the road next Saturday.

UT MARTIN FOOTBALL JUMPS INTO BOTH NATIONAL POLLS FOR FIRST TIME SINCE 2017

9/27/2021 11:17:00 AM MARTIN, Tenn. – For the first time since the 2017 season, the University of Tennessee at Martin football team has been rewarded for its strong play to start the season by cracking into the national rankings in both polls, ranking No. 23 in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 while sitting No. 24 in the AFCA FCS Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

This marks the Skyhawks first appearance in either the Stats Perform or Coaches’ Poll since Sept. 25, 2017. UT Martin is the only Ohio Valley Conference program to be ranked in either poll while Austin Peay and Murray State are receiving votes in both polls.

The Skyhawks (3-1) are coming off an upset road victory at No. 9 Jacksonville State in which the team posted a 34-31 comeback to record its first win over a top-10 opponent since 2013 and first win in Jacksonville since 1987. The win continued a hot streak which has seen UT Martin post three consecutive nonconference victories for the first time since joining the NCAA Division I FCS ranks in 1992.

September 26, 2021 Tristyn Fletcher HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. — A Clifton man has been arrested in the death of a Hardin County Sheriff’s deputy.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the investigation began after the deputy’s death while in the line of duty Saturday night.

The TBI says an initial investigation shows that around 8:30 p.m., the deputy, along with an officer from the Clifton Police Department were sent to a home in the 3000 block of Nance Bend Road in Clifton over a domestic disturbance call.

The TBI says they met Todd Alan Stricklin, 48, at the home, who had a handgun and allegedly refused to drop it.

‘My Radio Sure Sounds Good To Me’

As another deputy approached the home to help, Stricklin allegedly shot the deputy, according to the TBI. The TBI says the deputy was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.

The TBI says that Stricklin fled the area into the woods, but was later found by troopers from the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

Thankful For The Opportunity To Introduce & Present the Honoree and Congrats To All Award Recipients: Ivory T. Ellison who was presented the J. W. Shaw Gospel Legend Award Nell Hunstspon and the Women in Radio Award which was presented to radio personality Dr. Jazzi Anderson.

Sherry Powell talked about the accomplishments of Kix96 FM founder and former owner, James E. ‘Super’ Wolfe, Jr. and presented The James E. Wolfe, Jr. Community Service Award plaque honoring him to several original members of his staff.

The Golden Microphone in his honor was presented to Tony Black former commentator for “The Other Side” which aired on NewsTalk 101.5 FM. A tearful Robert “Cowboy” Mitchell presented and accepted the Dave Shaw Golden Microphone Award.

Mitchell and the late Shaw were among the first radio De-jays to hit the airwaves for KIX-96.

A special thanks goes out to local comedian the Hilarious Chris Cherry who’s standup routine loosened up the audience of nearly 100 prio to the meal; which was prepared by Martin Catering.

Also thanks to Terry Spearman and Above and Beyond Flowers for the decorations and Kasper Northern for snapping the photos.
