On September 9th, Tiffany Gordon called police because she was attempting to retrieve personal property from 963 Blank Street where she lives with her girlfriend Shanique Mclemore. Tiffany stated that while she was attempting to retrieve her vehicle, vehicle keys, and a firearm from the residence, Mclemore and Tiffany along with other witnesses began to argue. Tiffany and Demita stated that Mclemore started swinging a large Knife at them because she did not want them Shanique Mclemore (MNPD) to take a vehicle that was registered to Tiffany.Ê When police arrived on the scene Mclemore was still in the vehicle that Tiffany was trying to recover. Mclemore did admit to having a large knife that she used to defend herself against a group of people that came to her house with Tiffany. While she was giving her statement, Tiffany and other witnesses arrived at the scene.Ê CONT’D PAGE 3

Believe it or not but deer season has already opened in West Tennessee. There is still a drive to solve the CWD problem in the deer population in high risk counties. A positive CWD county is defined as one that has confirmed cases and high-risk counties are defined as counties within 10 miles of confirmed cases.

Hunters are encouraged to harvest as many deer as possible from Unit CWD counties in order to reduce the rate of increase. Those counties included are Chester, Crockett, Fayette, Gibson, Hardeman, Haywood, Lauderdale, Madison, McNairy, Shelby and Tipton.

Although bucks are more prone to CWD because of thier wide range of travel does are also needed to be reduced. According to Wildlife Resources Agency information the only way to reduce the likely-hood of solving the problem is to reduce the number of deer in the counties.

Unfortunately it is spread like Covid 19 through socialization which cannot be controlled. Therefore, hunters are encouraged to help with the over population and make deer hunting in West Tennessee the sport that we all love and enjoy.

All deer should be tested before consuming and hunters should not be concerned about any deer that test negative because they are safe to eat. Check with your local agency for more information and get on out in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee and enjoy yourself.

FACE MASK MANDATE EXTENDED THROUGH SEPTEMBER 26 IN MADISON COUNTY The Jackson Madison County Regional Health Department has issued order number 6, effective September 11, 2020 extending the face mask mandate until September 26.

The Regional Director of the Jackson Madison County Health Department has net daily with local government leaders, health care professionals, business and non profit communities in order to form a coordinated response to the COVID 19 pandemic, and these leaders are in support of this order number 6.Ê This new order was signed off by Madison County Mayor Jimmy Harris and Jackson City Mayor Scott Conger.

TITANS 1ST ROUND PICK ISAIAH WILSON ARRESTED FOR DUI IN NASHVILLE

(WKRN) — Titans offensive lineman Isaiah Wilson was arrested and charged with driving under the influence in Nashville Friday.Ê According to an affidavit, a witness saw Wilson’s car traveling at a high rate of speed and doing donuts at the intersection of 25th Avenue North and Charlotte Avenue. The statement said Wilson eventually lost control of his vehicle and struck the concrete wall on the outbound side of Charlotte Avenue. He was driving his Isaiah Wilson (MNPD) Dodge Challenger.

The report stated Wilson admitted being the driver of the vehicle and that he was having car problems, and that’s what caused the crash.

The affidavit said Wilson smelled like alcohol and his eyes were watery. He was given field sobriety tests and police said a breath test showed he had a blood-alcohol level of .107. He admitted to Metro Police he had two margaritas before driving.Ê

September 8, 2020ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff JACKSON, Tenn. — A woman accused of fatally shooting her ex-husband has been sentenced to serve 25 years.

Bradi Baker, 61, was convicted of the seconddegree murder of her exhusband Geoffrey Brunkhorst at a home off Hollywood Drive.

Investigators say Baker shot Brunkhorst five times at close range.

According to the district attorney’s office, Baker will serve the sentence without the possibility of parole, the maximum sentence allowed.

DRUGS SEIZED IN BROWNSVILLE Last week, Agents with the 28th Judicial District in Brownsville seized 1/4 ounce of meth, scales, baggies and a loaded handgun following a short vehicle pursuit just prior to serving a search warrant at 596 N. McLemore St. where Agents discovered more than 100 Xanax pills.Ê Jeremiah Sterling, 23 and Evan Farrell, 29 were arrested on multiple charges.

On September 5th, officers arrived on the scene of a crash with injuries which was found to be domestic-related. Officers spoke with Kelli Jackson who advised that she and her boyfriend, Nicholas Swift, had gotten into a verbal argument about a past domestic case. She stated that when Swift got mouthy with the neighbors she Nicholas Swift (MNPD) decided to drive him back home to Jackson, Tennessee. She further stated that when she informed Swift that after she dropped him off the relationship would be over, he did not like that answer.Ê Swift then stated “no” and jerked the wheel causing Kelli to crash the vehicle on 386 West towards Nashville Interstate 65 into a guard rail nearly driving off the HAROLD E. Kelli said that Swift then took her phone at which point she ran for help as he chased her. When she was finally able to get help Swift took off running towards Hooters. Kelli was taken to Skyline hospital and told police that she was afraid for her life and that she would like to obtain an order of protection.

Nicholas Swift was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment. His bond was set at $5,000.

While Tiffany was getting paperwork out of her vehicle to show proof of ownership, she told police that the knife used against her during the altercation was inside of the vehicle under the front passenger seat. Tiffany Gordon allowed officers to recover the knife which was identified by Tiffany and other witnesses as being the weapon used in the assault.Ê Shanique Mclemore was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault. Her bond was set at $20,000.

MASK UP! COUNT UP! GET OUT THE VOTE!

Gray Champions Today I looked back at some of the great speeches from the post WWII era and when I was finished I could not get the words of Douglas MacArthur out of my mind. His address to the West Point cadets in 1962, the “DutyHonor-Courage” speech and also his address to congress in 1951 are two of the most touching and memorable of all time. He closed his speech to congress by saying “Old soldiers never die: they just fade away”.

In our history there seems to have been people that were born only to lead men in a desperate fight. They appear from nowhere, carry out the mission, and when they finish the job they just fade away. These are warriors such as Washington, Heath, Greene, Grant, Sherman, Patton, Schwarzkopf, and of course MacArthur. We can also see those traits in some that have fought against us in men such as Forrest, Rommel, Tecumseh, and Crazy Horse.

There is another group of men who rise parallel in time whose task is to unite the country and lead the people in the direction they are to go next. They possess a different set of qualities that are every bit as important. These men are the “Gray-Haired Champions”.

Grey-Haired Champions are the men such as Jefferson, Madison, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Churchill and King. They are usually not the best, or the brightest, or the most highly esteemed in the beginning. They rise quickly from the ranks to lead the country on a new path. They have the ability to inspire trust and confidence with their leadership and the people willfully follow them. They determine a course of action and lead through the turmoil.

After that, in much the same way as the great warriors....they fade away.

These men never come from among the young, but rather they are remnants from the old; they are sages that will not remain to enjoy the benefits of their work. They will do the job with an eye towards the future and not the past. They are like some insects that mate and die.

As we continue along this course of what is likely to lead to a national crisis and will probably reach the scope and severity of those times past, I ask you to consider “Who will be our Gray-Haired Champion”? Will it be a Trump, or Pence, or Biden or Pelosi, or will it be someone we are not even aware of as yet?Ê Who will be the champion elder that will rise to the task, see it through, and then “Just fade away”?Ê Elvis RogersÊ

One of Jackson’s oldest mysteries is one step closer to being solved. For decades, an unnamed street department worker has been blamed for mixing up the street signs when they were installed for West Grand and Division Avenues around 1908 or before.

Over all these years, the worker has been accused of bungling the job. One story even holds that he came to work drunk the day he put the signs up. But evidence has now been uncovered that seems to exonerate the worker.Ê The popular account always made sense to me. If you turn off of Highland onto West Grand, almost immediately the street divides and reconnects two-tenths of a mile down the way. Naturally one would think that was the street meant to be named Division.Ê But evidence on file at the library and in the Madison County Archives shows that when the streets were originally named, West Grand did not divide. Only the current north fork existed and traversed the northern border of a sizable estate owned by E.B. McNeil.

But in 1922 – at least 14 years after the signs were installed – W.I. Dew, executor of the estate of Martha McNeil, sold the southern section of the McNeil property for $10,000 to Will and Maggie Lane. That’s when the south fork of West Grand was cut to provide access to the Lane’s new property.

The evidence shows that the street names were indeed originally reversed, but not on the street signs. Instead, the names appear to have been reversed only on a plat map.Ê In a little-known document provided by former Madison County Register of Deeds, the-late Curtis White, it says that “Grand was platted in error as Division.”

I recently had the chance to look at the map myself. Sure enough, the street names are reversed, however someone had scratched out the incorrect street names and written in the correct ones in two places. It’s fair to presume that the street department worker used the corrected map when he installed the street signs the way they were supposed to have been.

As the smoke is finally starting to clear on one of history’s mysteries in Jackson, it appears the unnamed worker is actually a hero, right in there with Carl Perkins and the Joneses – Casey and “Too Tall.” Indeed, we should be honoring this exemplary employee for his valiant efforts.

If anyone knows the worker’s family, please contact these fine folks who have been living in shame for the past 98 years and let them know they can finally hold their heads high.

The moral of this story is, if you come to a fork in the road, take it. Just remember, the fork may not have always been there. Even if it was, it does not mean the street should have had the name of the next street over.

“We have had hundreds of deaths in West Tennessee.

Hundreds. Not just the 53 that you’ve heard Kim report, and these are not just in Madison County,” said West Tennessee Healthcare Chief Communications and Compliance Officer Amy Garner.

Now one of those deaths includes an employee of West Tennessee Healthcare.

“Her name is Yvette Forrest. She was a treasured member of our family here for over 21 years,” Garner Yvette Forrest said.

Forrest was the manager of Human Resources Administration, and she worked for West Tennessee Healthcare since 1999.

“I just want this to be a reminder to everyone that is listening that this virus is killing our friends and family and West Tennessee,” Garner said.

New data is also giving a snapshot into what each county in West Tennessee is dealing with.

“They do a running positivity rate over the past seven days, so through yesterday we were averaging a 17.3 percent positivity rate in Madison County for the past seven days, and we’re averaging about 38 new cases a day for the past seven days,” said Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department Director Kim Tedford.

Community Leader Announces Run for Madison County Commission District 4 JACKSON, TN, Sept. 14, 2020: Ê Cynthia ‘Cindy’ Boyles announces her run for the Madison County Commission District 4.Ê Cindy is running to fill the seat that became vacant after the recent passing of Commissioner Billy Spain. Ê With her more than 30-year career in management, supervision, and service delivery in community corrections, family and children’s services, and higher education, Boyles will bring a unique and timely skill set to bear in solving the many issues facing Madison County.Ê Boyles’ primary focus will be 1) improving public safety, 2) providing transparency and accessibility to county government, and 3) creating economic development opportunities by prioritizing and improving quality of life for Madison County residents.ÊÊ

“Improving our schools is the best thing we can do to improve public safety.Ê We must provide our children with the tools they need to become thriving and contributing members of our community rather than potential burdens who fill up our jail cells,” Boyles said.Ê Drawing on her experience of navigating the oftentimes muddy waters of the County Commission processes, as founder of the Jackson-Madison County Community Remembrance Project, Boyles is determined to work to make our government more transparent.Ê She promises to “shine a light on the people’s business,” and adds that “taxpayers have a right to know how and where their tax dollars are being spent and moreover, have a right to participate.”Ê Boyles also envisions creative ways of expanding upon and improving Madison County’s rich and diverse cultural and natural resources in order to attract more tourism, business, and residents.Ê Boyles sees the possibility of Madison County taking its place on the Civil Rights Trail between Memphis and Nashville.

In 2019, Boyles worked with the County Commission to gain support for the placement of an historical marker which memorializes two of the three known victims of lynching in Madison County.Ê Boyles formed a coalition of community leaders, educators, business owners, and clergy members who worked to gain approval from the County Commission for the historical marker, at no cost to the county.Ê She worked hand-in-hand with members of the Commission on both sides of the aisle to achieve this goal.ÊÊ Boyles’s community work was recognized in a story by the Associated Press, which was featured in The Washington Post, The Philadelphia Tribune, The U.S. News and World Report, and many other media outlets.Ê The Jackson Sun named Boyles Person of the Year for 2019 and she received the Jackson Area Business and Professional Women’s Sterling Award in 2020 as one of the 20 Most Influential Women in West Tennessee.Ê Boyles also received the Lane College Chapter of the NAACP Leadership Award in recognition of her work with the Community Remembrance Project.ÊÊ Boyles is currently a member of the Jackson Equity Project and serves as the chair of its Criminal Justice Reform Committee.Ê In her spare time, Boyles volunteers at the Redemption Road Rescue project for horses and enjoys the occasional fly-fishing trip.
