Congressman Kustoff visits area diners in West Tennessee HEALTH DEPARTMENT CONFIRMS ADDITIONAL COVID-19 DEATH, 1849 CASES IN MADISON COUNTY JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department confirms a 65-year-old male died Aug. 17 due to complications from COVID-19.

This brings the total number of COVID-19 related deaths to 31 in Madison County.

The health department received positive test results for 63 more cases of COVID19. We now have 1,850 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Madison County.

What a great decision that was because the blue gills were taking poles out of our hands.

Swan Lake is located on the west side of Highway 76 about 2 miles down a beautiful winding gravel road. The serenity there is as close to that of Reelfoot Lake as you can find in West Tennessee.

There are cypress trees all around the lake while blue birds and finches are flying around. Believe it or not you might even see bald eagles from time to time.

Swan Lake is fed by the Hatchie River and is always being restocked naturally.

The fish are so fresh because there are no farm chemical run offs in the lake.

The lake is surrounded only by nature at its best.

Most of the blue gills have a beautiful orange perch color and aggressively fight like bass. The best part is that they are very tasty and healthy with lots on meat on them.Ê If you haven’t been do yourself a favor and explore the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee for a good day of social distancing.

Lexington woman charged after child found with burns from clothes iron August 13, 2020ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff HENDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — The Henderson County Sheriff’s Department has arrested a woman involved in a child abuse investigation.

Court documents say a 4-year-old child was taken into the custody of the Department of Child Services after being seen with numerous burn injuries.

The child was taken for medical treatment of those burns, which were at different stages of healing and all over the child’s body, court documents say.

According to court documents, the child told investigators that Amanda Coffman, 41, used a clothes iron to the burn the child after getting in trouble.

Court documents say Coffman told investigators that the child fell on the clothes iron, causing the injuries, admitting that the injuries were a “severe burn.”

Coffman did not take the child for medical treatment, and medical records call the injuries “severe physical abuse and inflicted burns,” according to court documents.

Coffman was arrested Aug. 11 and charged with aggravated child abuse.

She has since been released on bond.

On 8/14/2020 around 1:45 pm officers of the Jackson Police Department were called to a large disturbance in the area of 100 Lincoln Courts involving several people fighting and possibly armed.

As officers were responding to the area a shooting occurred. Officers located an adult male victim who had been shot.

The victim was transported to a local hospital where he later was pronounced deceased. A second adult male gunshot victim was located on N. Highland Ave. and was transported to the hospital. This victim was to surgery and is currently listed in stable condition.

“This is crazy,” said Jackson City Councilman Johnny Dodd. “And it’s sad.

We are losing our young men to senseless violence!

The District 2 councilman and vice mayor of Jackson commented on the Friday afternoon shooting.

“In my opinion we need to protest this problem -Black on Black Crime- just as hard as we protest police brutality,” said Dodd.

Councilman Dodd feels that the absence of fathers in a majority of homes in east Jackson has to be addressed as well.

“We must break the cycle of fatherless home. We must continue addressing local and community crime.”

Dodd was instrumental in spearheading the Weekly Anti-Crime Marches that gained national notoriety in the late 90’s. At the time, Jackson was experiencing one of it’s highest murder rates ever recorded.

“We used those marches to bring people together so that the entire city could see what was going on in East Jackson and help find solutions to the problem,” added Dodd.

Each week Dodd and dozens of citizens and activist would congregate at a different ‘hot spot’ and march to drive out crime in the area by bringing awareness to the problem.

“When people within the community began to see that people throughout the city were on their side, things began to change, the marches began to have a positive affect.”

Police identify woman killed in south Jackson domestic homicide August 17, 2020 Corallys Ortiz - WBBJTV7.COM JACKSON, Tenn. — Sunday afternoon, the Jackson Police Department responded to reports of a woman that was shot in her home on Tricia Cove in south Jackson.

Police say 53-year-old Shewanna Gray-Cross was found dead inside the home when officers arrived.

The news came as a shock for many close to Cross, many of whom left heartfelt messages on her Facebook page.

According to Cross’ page, she worked at Hardeman County Correctional Facility as a chief counselor.

WBBJ reached out to her son Curtis, but he has not responded.

In a post to his mother, Curtis said, “You will live through me. You are strong and independent and you taught me how to be those things. I love you and I can never say that enough.”

According to the Jackson Police Department, investigators were able to identify another of her sons, Curdarius Cross (r), as a suspect.

The 20-year-old was arrested Sunday night in Nashville.

Police have not confirmed what led to the shooting, but say the investigation is still ongoing.

Enthusiasm is Working Despite Circumstances A lot has happened since my last article.

There will be four new school board members as a result of the past election. Dr. Marlon King has done a splendid job of building goodwill with all stakeholders involved with the school system. A most impressive task considering he has been a superintendent less than two months.

It has been an extremely fluid situation in implementing his initiative for a new normal at JMCSS. On the plus side he seems to be enlisting the aid of administrators, the school board, teachers, and parents in formulating his plan.

I admire the transparency with which he conveys communications to the media and his adept use of social media. Parents can download the JMCSS app that can keep them up to speed on options and changes. This is no easy task to be sure. Dr. King seems to have chosen his team well to facilitate what is best for students for the upcoming semester.

Student, Faculty, and Staff Safety are of Utmost Concern A three-option plan was revised even before classes were scheduled to start to due a recent spike in COVID19 related cases and concerns expressed by parents and teachers for safety regarding on campus classrooms. Until further notice the available options will be distance learning, virtual classroom, and CyberSchool.

Schools are starting up in surrounding areas on campus with a variety of restrictions in place to accommodate safety concerns from COVID19. Local colleges are moving students onto campuses and plan to have classes on campus with restrictions.

“Students benefit moving forward by staying on track academically.” -Gov. Bill Lee Teachers are better equipped to meet the challenges this fall but it remains to be seen if students will respond to the challenges of the absence of in person connectivity in the academic experience. Teachers foster relationships and facilitate learning by earning the trust of their students as they encourage them to have confidence in their abilities. A laptop in the hands of a student with slow or inconsistent internet connection will not be conducive to learning. Just as a textbook in the hands of a student that cannot read or understand the content will not enhance learning.

Teachers are essential to the learning process. Students the path of least resistance most often leads to regret.

Challenge yourself and insist on academic rigor as a part of your learning experience.

PICNIC IN CEMETERY

My Isaac Hayes Lunch Before COVID-19, I used to eat lunch at a restaurant in Memphis with my friend Nancy who lives over there. But social distancing has changed that. The last time we went to lunch, Nancy suggested going on a picnic because the restaurant’s dining room was closed.

That was OK, but it was her choice of location that I found unusual. She wanted to have lunch in a cemetery.

Going on a picnic in a graveyard was a first for me. But the idea did make sense when it came to social distancing. A person is not likely to be around many people in a cemetery. Not live ones anyway.

The outing turned out to be an interesting experience because there were two attractions at the cemetery.

First, there was the grave of Isaac Hayes. For those too young to remember, Hayes was a famous singer, musician, songwriter, and actor in the 1960s and ‘70s, even being inducted into the Rock &Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Born in Covington, Hayes taught himself to play piano, organ, and saxophone. He fronted several Memphis bands, including Sir Isaac and The Doo-dads. By age 21, he was a backup musician at Stax Records, the trailblazing Memphis R&B label the New York Times called a “proudly unpolished Southern alternative to Motown.” His first recording session was with Otis Redding.

In time, Hayes began writing songs with David Porter, such as “Soul Man” and “Hold On, I’m Comin’” which were huge hits for Sam and Dave. He recorded the music for the movie “Shaft” in four days with several members of the Bar-Kays, one of the house bands at Stax.

You might also say Hayes invented Rap music. His 1969 album, “Hot Buttered Soul,” included spoken segments he called “raps.” This was four years before Coke La Rock uttered the stanza in New York credited with giving birth to Rap music. Hayes’ album became one of his biggest hits, reaching No. 8 on the charts.

Directly across from Hayes’ resting spot is the most beautiful cave one can imagine. Called the Crystal Shrine Grotto, it glitters like a place full of treasure. The ceiling of the 60-foot-long cave is covered with huge bejeweled stalactites that jut from the craggy surfaces.

Voted #3 on the top 10 things to do and see in Memphis, the cave was created in the 1930s by the late Dionicio Rodriguez, an artist and architect from Mexico. Local community activist dies due to COVID-19

August 13, 2020ÊÊClint Eiland JACKSON, Tenn. — A community activist known for her dedication to helping children has died due to COVID-19.

P eople recognized Tanya Rivers when she spoke. Her assertive voice and passion was immediately noticed.

Rivers died earlier this week after a month long battle with COVID-19. Pastor Ronald Benton was there with the family.

“She texted me to make sure that her son and her daughter were taken care of,” Benton said. Benton says Rivers had refocused her life after her son, James Rivers, was accidentally shot and killed in early 2019.

JMC SCHOOLS GOING VIRTUAL LEARNING

Teachers will contact families to determine device need. If you signed up for traditional, you will be allowed to participate in virtual learning. There is no need now to contact schools. We thank you for your grace and patience as we navigate and adjust due to the rise in COVID19 cases in Madison County Modifications are being made to our New Normal Initiative in light of the rising COVID number in Madison County and among JMCSS employees. All 25 school principals met with Dr. King recently to identify creative options for students to begin and continue distance learning.

Particular attention is being given to special needs students and options for teachers to conduct virtual lessons from home.

Students with special needs may be allowed to reenter the classroom along with students who require specialized services. Please contact your school for details on accommodations.

Teachers, in collaboration with their principals, may be allowed to invite a small cohort of students to attend class in person on a temporary basis to strengthen foundational skills. Parents would be required to provide transportation for those students. Please contact your school for details on these accommodations.

JMCSS Update: ATHLETICS JMCSS leadership is taking steps to protect our students and the fall sports season. The current trend in positive COVID cases in Madison County has caused district leaders to proceed with extreme caution – while also protecting the possibility of athletic contests at our high school facilities this fall.

The Jackson-Madison County School System has made the difficult decision to currently postpone the in-person classroom option. As a result, the determination to return fall sports to our Phase One safety measures was decided this morning in an emergency meeting of JMCSS Senior Leadership; district principals and the JMCSS executive team were in attendance.

“While many are deeply disappointed, this decision was made in the best interest of everyone’s health and safety,” said Deputy Superintendent Dr. Ricky Catlett. “As a group, we have worked tirelessly over the last weeks to determine a safe return. That effort will continue as we navigate the fluid situation before us. As local COVID cases go down, we will continue to explore adding back the traditional in person option,” Dr. Catlett said.

While this is a stressful time for everyone involved, the Jackson-Madison County School System is putting a priority on the health and safety of it’s students, teachers and staff. District leaders will evaluate conditions on a week to week basis.

“I look forward to the return of school traditions we all know and love under the safety guidelines set forth by the CDC and recommended by our local health officials,” Dr. Catlett said.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE In order to construct a warehouse facility, the applicant proposes to relocate the linear wetland channel into an approximately 1,500 linear foot vegetated trapezoidal channel along the property margin, with two five feet by five feet culvert crossings, allowing entry over the relocated channel. The channel will have a five-foot wide natural bottom with 2:1 ten-foot slopes transitioning into adjacent 15 feet buffer strips. The five-foot channel bottom provides approximately 0.25-acres of replacement for the existing 0.18-acre wetland. The slopes will be seeded and stabilized using native vegetation.

Additionally, two utility crossings will be constructed using open cut techniques.

ANTIDEGRADATION In accordance with the Tennessee Antidegradation Statement (Rule 0400-40-03-.06), the Division has made a preliminary determination that the proposed activities will result in no significant degradation in a waterbody with unavailable parameters for habitat because the proposed activities will not result in an appreciable permanent loss of resource values.

FACTORS CONSIDERED In deciding whether to issue or deny this permit, the Division will consider all comments of record and the requirements of applicable federal and state laws. The division will consider the nature, scale and effects of proposed impacts. The Division will consider practicable alternatives to the alteration, loss of waters or habitat, diminishment in biological diversity, cumulative or secondary impacts to the water resource, and adverse impacts to unique, high quality, or impaired waters.

HOW TO COMMENT TDEC is requesting public comment on this proposed permit action. Obtaining a broad range of facts and opinions on Agency actions is one of the best ways to ensure appropriate decisions.
