HIGH SPEED CHASE ENDS IN ARREST Aug. 13, 2019- This afternoon at 12:47, Madison County Sheriff John Mehr, confirmed the arrest of Tess Martin, age 48, a female resident of Bolivar, TN. MCSO Deputies made a traffic stop, and after a question of identity, Martin led Deputies on a high speed chase that began on Shady Grove Road and covered several miles of the southwest part of the county.Ê Spikes were deployed and she continued to drive without tires, even the rims were destroyed before she was captured and arrested on Highway 18.

LANDLORD ACCUSED OF BEATING TENANT TO DEATH WITH STICK, PROPANE TANK WBBJ 7 EYEWITNESS NEWS STAFF

HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn. — A Hardin County man is accused of killing his tenant during a fight near Walnut Grove.

Court documents say Daniel Oakley, 33, was involved in a fight Wednesday with Brian Tucker at a home on Highway 69 South, when Oakley hit Tucker in the face and head multiple times with various objects, including a propane tank and a 2-by-2 stick of wood.

Court documents say emergency personnel responded to the home, and crews had originally planned to take Tucker to a hospital by helicopter. Due to personnel having to start CPR, Tucker was instead taken by ambulance to Hardin County Medical Center, where he died from his injuries, according to court documents.

Oakley is currently charged with second-degree murder and is being held in the Hardin County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.

On August 11, 2019 a black male walked into the Dollar General Store located on N. Parkway across from JSCC in Jackson, TN and walked out with two large containers of Gain liquid detergent and a backpack full of other stolen items. The unidentified male has stolen similar items from the store on several occassions. The store manager at Dollar General wants other stores to be on the lookout for this detergent thief. He always wears a hat and carries a grey backpack that has an orange strip down the side. He will decline to leave the bag with cashier. He also has two or more accomplisses with him during his thefts, including a person waiting in the get away car.

HAMPTON, S.C. — A 37-year-old man in South Carolina will spend the rest of his life in prison for impregnating a 10-year-old.

Prosecutors said Tony Orlanda Singleton was found guilty Wednesday of first-degree criminal sexual assault.

Authorities say they took DNA evidence from the fetus after the girl had an abortion and it proved Singleton was the father.

PARIS â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation along with investigators with the Paris Police Etta Etheridge Department are seeking information in a Paris cold case homicide.

On June 8, 2001, the Paris Police Department responded to a home at 322 Rison Street in Paris, where investigators found Etta Etheridge (DOB: 4/6/29) inside unresponsive. Her death was ruled a homicide.

Over the years that followed, TBI Agents and investigators from the Paris Police Department conducted an extensive joint investigation. Those efforts continue and have led to new evidence and leads in this active and ongoing investigation into the death of the 72-year-old. The TBI is now offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest, prosecution, and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime.

Debra Johnson’s family reacts to accused killer’s capture by:ÊStassy OlmosÊ- wknr.com Posted:ÊAug 12, 2019 NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — It was just after 11 a.m. Sunday morning when Debra Johnson’s family heard the man wanted for her murder had been captured.

“I was just relieved and I thank the Lord, I thank the Lord that he has been caught,” her mother, Annie Porter, said.

“All four of us were together getting her clothes prepared for the burial and for the funeral,” Johnson’s daughter, Shernay Johnson said, “And so just to be together, be with family and to know that he’s been captured, it was a relief.”

Authorities discovered the 64-year-old’s body inside her home on the West Tennessee State Penitentiary grounds Wednesday. Johnson oversaw the wardens of regional prisons and had worked for the department of corrections for 38 years.

“She was good to everyone,” Johnson’s son Mychal Austin said, “She just wanted everyone to have a fair shot at life. That she saw that again that inmates always didn’t get their fair share, so she wanted to make sure inmates got their fair shake.

Not give them the opportunity, but set the stage for them to have the opportunity to be rehabilitated.”

Authorities charged 44-year-old Curtis Watson of sexually assaulting and strangling Johnson before escaping the prison on a tractor while on lawn mowing duties.

“We couldn’t turn the lights off because we didn’t know where he was, we didn’t know if he took her cell phone, we didn’t know if he knew our addresses, we didn’t know if she was targeted,” Shernay Johnson said, “We just couldn’t sleep with the lights off.”

NURSE PRACTITIONER CHARGED WITH FRAUDULENTLY OBTAINING PRESCRIPTION DRUGS ANDERSON COUNTY – An investigation by Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has led to the indictment of a Clinton woman on charges that she fraudulently obtained prescription drugs.

In February 2017, after receiving information from the Knoxville Police Department, TBI Special Agents with the Drug Investigation Division began investigating allegations that Tonia Renee Suttles (DOB 8/19/72) was obtaining controlled substances by fraud. Information obtained during the investigation Suttles revealed that over a two-year period, while working at two medical practices in East Tennessee, Suttles used her position as a nurse practitioner to fraudulently obtain prescription medications.

This week, the Anderson County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Suttles with eight counts of Prescription Drug Fraud. On Thursday, with assistance from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department, Agents arrested Suttles. She was booked into the Anderson County Jail on a $25,000 bond.

HAYWOOD COUNTY DRUG BUST The 28th DTF was hard at work today in HAYWOOD COUNTY where Agents with assistance from the TBI seized 3/4 of a pound of methamphetamine-ice, electronic scales, bags, approximately $1,800.00 in drug proceeds and several items stolen from the wildlife refuge. Two persons (One on probation for selling meth) are in the custody of Sheriff Billy Garrett awaiting formal charges. This search warrant is special as it marks the first search warrant served with the newly formed partnership of West Tennessee Drug Task Force, Haywood Sheriff, and City of Brownsville Police Department.

Recently Sheriff Garrett assigned a full time investigator and Chief Diebold assigned a part time investigator to the Task Force. In addition, the Task Force is made up of officers assigned full time from Gibson County Sheriff’s Office, Milan Police Department, Humboldt Police Department, Humboldt TN, Trenton TN Police Department and part time from Crockett County Sheriff’s Dept Tennessee. There is also one Special Agent in Charge who works directly for the Task Force.

The Equity Alliance of Tennessee meet at the local NAACP offices Sunday August 11 to share information with the people regarding their mission. Ok 2018 the Equity Alliance and a coalition of citizens aimed to boldly register to vote 91,000 black and brown Tennesseans. Six months later politicians passes a law to punish fine and criminalize voter registration drives like theirs.

The Alliance is fighting back, in response to lawmakers that voted “yes” (aye) to pass this law, we are organizing in their districts to build power and take action.

“Black Lives Matter” Representative Visits Jackson Karen Spencer-McGee of Memphis was in Jackson Sunday speaking for “Black Lives Matter” as she said “I’m a lover of my people”.

Karen went into to say “this is not a sprint, this is a marathon” as she advocates for the committee of “Butterfly and healing” Karen is also the Tri-Chair of “the Poor Peoples Campaign” And is also instrumental with the National Women’s March of Memphis” in Tennessee.

We are in these struggles for the long hail and marathon not just a sprint” said McGee “ a well know civil rights activist in Memphis and Shelby County” She was in attendance at the local NAACP Branch supporting the Equity Alliance of Tennessee.

Employee of the Month The Jackson Police Department is pleased to announce Officer Joseph Mitchell as “Employee of the Month” for the month of August. Officer Mitchell has eight years of service with the Jackson Police Department where he is currently assigned to the Patrol Division.

Officer Mitchell is consistently working hard to meet the needs of this department and the citizens of Jackson. Officer Mitchell always has such a positive attitude. His attitude can brighten a room. His attitude reflects his actions. He has a very positive work ethic. He is willing to go the extra mile for is co-workers and the citizens of this city. His talent in dealing with consumers is extraordinary.

He never meets a stranger and is very sensitive to the needs of people with whom he has contact on daily basis. He is known to stop and assist people even when off duty.

The 2019 BPW Woman of Achievement has served her community as Director of Market Research and Development for West Tennessee Healthcare. In this capacity she is responsible for grant and proposal writing for all West Tennessee Healthcare affiliates, designated community public and not-for-profit agencies. Merriweather Makes Bold Proposal for Schools Attached is a proposal that I would like to present to the members of JMCSS Board, Superintendent, City & County Officials & To The Citizens of Jackson, Tennessee.Ê I think that this proposal will show the entire community that all parties are willing to show good faith, that we will work together as One Community- to provide good schools & quality education to All Students.Ê The following is a proposal that is offered to the duly elected chief executive officers of the City of Jackson, Tennessee and Madison County, Tennessee, as well as the Chairs of the Madison County Commission and the Jackson-Madison County Board of Education. Each representative of the named entities are parties to this agreement in their official capacities as the leader of each entity.

Upon consideration of the desire of the parties to sufficiently provide for the students of the Jackson-Madison County School System and in their collective goal of providing and achieving a top-notch education for all of its students, the parties agree to the following: That the new Pope Elementary School shall be constructed on the premises located on Ashport Road in Madison County, Tennessee; That the new Madison Academic High School shall be constructed on the campus of the University of Memphis-Lambuth and will be paid for by the City of Jackson regardless of whether or not the New Market Tax Credits are received by the entity that seeks them; That the new Jackson Central Merry (JCM) High School shall be constructed on the property that immediately surrounds the present Oman Arena so that Oman Arena will become the center of the new JCM campus. The cost of construction will be paid for by Madison County regardless of whether or not the New Market Tax Credits are received by the entity that seeks them. In addition to the construction of the new JCM, a regulation-sized football stadium and an 8-lane track field will also be constructed by Madison County; That the City of Jackson will donate Oman Arena and the real estate on which it is set to the Jackson Madison County School Board;That Oman Arena will be used for JCM school functions and extra-curricular activities, sporting events, and other purposes. The City of Jackson shall have the right of usage of Oman Arena for events that do not interfere with the usage by JCM for school activities. Profits from events at Oman Arena that are sponsored by the City of Jackson shall be shared by JCM and the City of Jackson with JCM receiving 40% of the profits and the City of Jackson the remainder; That Lane College shall continue to be allowed the usage of the former JCM East Campus buildings, which includes the former auditorium and all areas of the building extending from the auditorium west-ward to the former JCM East Campus office area. The remaining portion of the former JCM school building that remains after the construction of the new JCM school building shall be used by Lane College as a first-class teaching incubator for the purpose of training teachers;Ê Ê That the former Malesus Elementary School shall be renovated and established as a Pre-K Center no later than August 2022; That Madison, JCM, and Pope schools shall be built simultaneously; and,That the parties to this agreement are in support of not recalling any present JacksonMadison School Board member during the course of any present member’s term of office.

DENMARK BACK 2 SCHOOL “ROUNDUP” HUGE SUCCESS

Communities Supporting Schools Poised to Make a Difference

On Saturday, August 10, 2019, a Back 2 School “Roundup” was held at the West High Alumni Building in Denmark, Tennessee. The event, a part of the Communities Supporting Schools collaboration, was organized by Jackson City Councilman Ernest Brooks and School Board member James “Pete” Johnson.

Superintendent Ray Washington was in attendance and addressed the students and parents.

“I was proud to partner with Councilman Brooks to sponsor this event for the children that live in the Denmark and South Jackson areas – they need our support too”. Students attending Denmark Elementary, South Elementary, West Bemis Middle School and Southside High School were the focus.

The “Roundup” was designed to enlist the support of the community – parents, teachers, churches, businesses and other organizations to support the educational process for students. Over 100 book bags, filled with school supplies, were distributed, along with free haircuts, music, food and a “Dandy Jumper”. Not only was the event planned for students, but professionals from the Jackson-Madison County School System (JMCSS) informed parents about the new Pre-Kindergarten classrooms, “Learn Zillion”, and “Prometheus Math”.

Additionally, middle schoolers were encouraged to participate in this year’s “Do the Write Thing” Challenge – Councilman Brooks’ youth violence prevention program. Information was also provided concerning the 2020 U.S. Census.

Supporting organizations included Ryder, JEA, Madison County Fire Department, Madison County Sherriff’s Department, West Tennessee State Fair, JMCSS, several West High Classes, West High Alumni Association, Cerro Gordo Baptist Church, Mt. Olive Baptist Church and Johnson Grove Baptist Church and others.

According to Councilman Brooks, “Communities Supporting Schools is not a moment, it is a movement. The “roundup” was the first of many upcoming events for our students”.

UT MARTIN TO WELCOME STUDENTS BACK AUG. 22 MARTIN, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin will begin the fall 2019 semester Aug. 26, and incoming freshman students begin moving into campus residence halls Aug. 22. Many groups, including student-athletes, have already returned to the area.

First-Year Initiative, a special program for incoming freshmen, begins with Move-In Mania at 6 a.m., Aug. 22, when student organizations and community groups gather at the residence halls to assist students as they move into their rooms. This annual event is the first major welcome new students receive from the community as they adjust to their new homes.

Informational sessions throughout the day will end with convocation at 5 p.m. in the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center prior to the Skyhawk Family Picnic and Celebration at 6 p.m. in Graham Stadium.

Convocation is a special ceremony to begin a new student’s collegiate career and remind them that the end goal is ultimately graduation in the same arena.

Bemis Historical Society Upcoming Events Bemis Historical Society will hold a regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 20, at 7:00 p.m. at the Bemis Mill Village Museum located at 2 North Missouri Street in Jackson, TN.Ê Ricky Long will present a program titled “More Than Names on a Wall, The World War II Dead of Madison County, TN” with a look at the heroes of Madison County who gave their lives for our freedom in World War II.Ê The program will include overview information about the 179 men and several of their individual stories.

A memorial wall is located in Liberty Garden Park & Arboretum at 24 Channing Way in Jackson.Ê The wall is a remembrance of those brave heroes from Madison County who died in wars and conflicts beginning with World War I.Ê Ricky has extensively researched the men from World War II.Ê His presentation helps us to remember the lives of these young people who went to war and lost their lives.

The public is invited to attend.Ê The museum is handicap accessible.Ê Browse the museum to enjoy the artifacts and visit the gift shop.Ê Annual membership dues are $25.

Lane College President Delivers State Of The College Address:

‘I Count It All Joy’ ByÊHBCU Editors-ÊAug 5, 2019 (LaneÊCollege President Logan Hampton detailed the State of the College while addressing the Lane College National Alumni Association AnnualÊMeeting in Memphis on July 19. Here are excerpts from his talk.) …Today, I am delighted to update you on the happenings of Lane College. …Time does not permit a full accounting of blessings this afternoon.

I count it all joy to have received the official letter from theÊSouthern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) dated, July 2, 2019.… Lane College is accredited with all the rights and privileges afforded to a SACSCOC regionally accredited institution.

I count it all joy when I think of our women’s basketball team. … During my tenure, these women had never won one tournament game. We never had to think about budget because they would go to the SIAC BasketballÊTournament, play a game and returnÊhome.

This year, they won their first game, then beat the undefeated regular season champions, and went on to win their first SIAC Conference Championship in the history of the College. We have been celebrating since March.

It has just been fun to see our students enjoy success. One graduate started his future at BET – Hollywood. Another will begin theÊPhD programÊin neuroscience this fall at the University of Alabama in Birmingham.ÊYes, another is moving on to Syracuse. Our volleyball team was recognized for the highest GPA among otherÊSIAC member institutions. They will spike the ball in your face and look better than you.

Our 2019 Miss Lane, Shannel DeFoe, is a member of the volleyball team, competed in the state Miss Tennessee Volunteer ScholarshipÊPageant, won talent and made the top 15, the first in the history of Lane College since 1985. The baseball and softball teamsÊeachÊwon 20 plus games and competed well in their tournaments. Additionally, theÊbaseball team had four playersÊto make SIAC All-Conference, yes, from Lane, SIAC All-Conference in baseball.

I count it all joy when I consider that the College finally completed and submitted itsÊproposal to establish a teacher preparation program to the State of Tennessee. My colleagues have done the work, so we pray now that the proposal finds favor with the Tennessee Department of Education and is approved.

I count it all joy when I think of theÊ $649,801 S-STEM National Science Foundation (NSF)Êgrant awarded to our science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) faculty this year. The grant provides scholarships toÊscience,ÊSTEM majors. We want to scholarship the next generation of high achieving STEM scholars to earn their degree. Tell your seniors, apply now, it’s not too late. ÊA couple of weeks back, the College received notification that the Lane College Chemistry Department has been awarded a grant in the amount of Ê$398,786 by NSFÊHistorically Black Colleges and Universities Undergraduate Program (HBCU-UP).

I count it all joy when I think of the community garden or urban farm that we are currently developing on our 2.5 acres lot on Lane Avenue.ÊWe will soon have sweet potatoes, herbs, flowers growing in East Jackson as we grow scholars, grow our community and grow hope.

This year, we piloted several institutional innovations. We createdÊthe Student Textbook Exchange Program (STEP), a collaboration of academic affairs, student affairs and auxiliary services that provided each student their course materials. We reasoned that we could provide the materials at a more affordable price than our students could purchase on the Internet. We observed that students who participated in STEP had a higher average GPA compared to those who did not.

Also, we adjusted our fall calendar to end the semester prior to the Thanksgiving holiday. Since I arrived, I observed how difficult it is for our students to go home for a week at Thanksgiving and then return to campus for a week of finals. So, we ended the semester early and then hosted a Decembermester.

I count it all joy that Dr. WillieÊMae Willett brought CVS to the College to explore a partnership to establish internship and CVS training center on campus.

Lane’s slogan, The Power of Potential®, not only describes our students; it also describes how we view current and future students.Ê While it may be all that some see, an underfunded and underprepared student who hails from underserved and under-resourced schools and communities, at Lane College, we see grit, resiliency, hopefulness, gifts, talent and the power of potential.Ê We employ intrusive, high-touch policies, practices, and processes to cultivate and develop each student’s potential. We do it more affordably than our sister institutions. …

Dr. Anna Cooke described our founder, Bishop Lane, with these words, “Regarded by some as a crank on the subject of education, by others as a beggar, he was often rejected but continued to pray and work for the educational uplift of the young people of his race” (Lane College: It’s Heritage and Outreach 1882-1982, p. 18).

Some might consider it an insult to be called cranky and a beggar. But after, these five years as president, I have confirmed the Ecclesiastical writing, to everything there is a season, a time to be cranky and a time to beg.

When it comes to defending the educational mission of Lane College, I find it necessary sometimes to be cranky. One day, a fella stopped by my office and asked me, more or less, if we had too many black boys with all their testosterone. I got a little cranky.

I told him, “Pick up your newspaper and read it some time.Ê Turn the nightly news on and watch it some time.Ê You will find sufficient evidence that we need to provide all of the educational opportunities for African-American males that we possibly can.”

That’s why I’m happy to be here today representing the Lord and Lane College. At Lane, 52 percent of the student body is male with 48 percent female. I celebrate the number of African American males that we enroll.

For too long, our black boys have been marginalized and stigmatized and demonized and ostracized and denigrated. The media goes out of its way to portray them as scary thugs.

So I say bring us your black boys with all their testosterone because we ain’t scared. We are set to make leaders who know the Lord, their lesson, and life purpose.Ê Bring us your testosterone because we are set to help them be good daddies and strong daddies, active and engaged in the lives of their children. Bring us your testosterone because we are set to make them scholars and intellectuals and preachers and doctors and lawyers.Ê Bring us your testosterone.Ê We are ready make men out of boys….

In equipping, educating and empowering our graduates, we make them ready to be lifelong learners, leaders and servants. The graduate leaves ready to competeÊin the marketplace, compete in the workforce and make their companies, communities and our country stronger.

Again, Lane College National Alumni, I ask you for the following:ÊPray for Fair Lane. Call us by name. Pray for me, a broken, frail leader…

Say good things about us… In particular, please write your United States congressional representatives and advocate for Lane by asking your senator and representatives to vote for legislation that supports the HBCU historic preservation, full funding of Title III programs, increase in Pell grants…

Send us your students. While our national recruiting is strong, we always have room for one more exceptional scholar.

Send us your gifts. Financial gifts sustain the College. We need you to make your best gift to the College today. The College has great deferred maintenance needs to sustain the historic buildings and unfortunately the new buildings as well. … Also, I remind you that 90 percent of our students are Pell eligible and need your help to make the institution affordable. … Put the College in your will.

Here is my shout today: We, Lane College, that is, sit on the highest point, the highest elevation, in Jackson-Madison County. Jesus spoke about us in the Bible. Read the Lane College translation of the Bible. Jesus said,Ê ““You are the light of the world (Jackson-Madison County). A city (college) that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Let your light so shine before men (Jackson-Madison County, State of Tennessee), that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14,16)
