JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department confirms a 76-year-old male died Aug. 10 due to complications from COVID-19. This brings the total number of COVID19 deaths to 25 in Madison County. The health department received positive test results for 73 more cases G ET YOUR of COVID-19. TODAY!!! charged with second-degree murder after a Haywood County man died last month of a drug overdose. According to the West Tennessee Drug Task Force, Charlie Zachary Thornton has been arrested in connection with the July 24 overdose. Haywood County investigators responded to a home in the 9000 block of Tibbs Road and found the resident dead, according to a news release. The release says the man’s cause of death was determined to be a fentanyl overdose. Investigators found fake Oxycodone pills, believed to be fentanyl, at the home, according to the release. Agents with the West Tennessee Drug Task Force were able to track the source of the fentanyl to a home in Ripley, where the 25th Judicial District Drug Task Force and Haywood County investigators assisted in a search of the home, according to the release. Agents and investigators searched the Drake Avenue residents, and arrested Thornton. According to the release, Thornton told investigators he sold the pills, which he “knew were dangerous,” to the victim.

JPD CONTINUE TO INVESTIGATE ACCIDENT - CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 All the occupants of the two vehicles were transported by Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital for medical treatment.Ê Two of the three subjects involved in the accident succumbed to their injuries.Ê The deceased have been identified as 19-year-old Brianna Mathis and 19-year-old Raegan Rollins both from Bradford Tennessee.Ê Based on the preliminary investigation, the vehicle driven Brianna Mathis crossed over double yellow lines into the path of the other vehicle causing the head-on collision.Ê The preliminary investigation also suggest that neither of the deceased were wearing any safety equipment (seatbelts).Ê This investigation is ongoing but if anyone has information that would assist in the investigation, call the Jackson Police Department at 731-425-8400.
HICKMAN COUNTY DEPUTY CHARGED WITH ASSAULT, OFFICIAL MISCONDUCT AND OPPRESSION HICKMAN COUNTY – An investigation by Special Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has resulted in the indictment and arrest of a Hickman County deputy on charges of official oppression and misconduct, as well as assault. In January, at the request of District Attorney General Kim Helper, TBI Agents, with the assistance of the Hickman County Sheriff’s Office, began investigating a complaint of excessive use of force by a Hickman County deputy. During the course of the investigation, Hull Agents developed information indicating that while effecting arrests in November 2019 and January 2020, Deputy Scott Hull was responsible for the assault of two individuals. Last week, the Hickman County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Scott Anthony Hull (DOB 07/17/ 1969) with four counts of Assault, two counts of Official Oppression, and two counts of Official Misconduct. Hull was arrested Wednesday and booked into the Hickman County Jail on a $25,000 bond

Jackson, TN – Michael Taylor, 37, has been sentenced to 87 months in federal prison for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. D. Michael Dunavant, U.S. Attorney announced the sentence today. According to information presented in court, on May 20, 2019, agents with the 28th Judicial District Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at a Milan, Tennessee, residence and seized approximately five grams of methamphetamine. The occupants of the home agreed to cooperate with law enforcement and consented to call their supplier, the defendant, Michael Taylor, and order .5 ounces (or approximately 15 grams) of methamphetamine. Taylor agreed to bring .5 ounces of methamphetamine to that residence in Milan. Agents subsequently observed Taylor pull into the driveway at that residence, in a Pontiac 4-door car. He then exited the driver’s side door and walked up to the front door. Agents ordered Taylor to the ground, but he refused to comply with the officers’ directives and was physically restrained. He was ultimately taken into custody and advised of his Miranda rights. A search of Taylor’s person revealed approximately 15 grams of methamphetamine, 69 grams of cutting agent, and $2,244.00 in U.S. currency.

EAST ELEMENTARY FACULTY AND STAFF MOURN THE DEATH OF FORMER STUDENTÊ JACKSON, Tenn. - Members of the Jackson-Madison County School System are saddened by the death of 6-year old East Elementary School student GIGI MORSE. JMCSS officials were made aware of Gigi’s death during a daily press briefing by Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department officials on Wednesday. According to a subsequent report by the Jackson Sun, Gigi’s parents say she tested positive for COVID-19. Although the 2020-2021 school year has not started for JMCSS students, the faculty and staff at East Elementary are remembering Gigi for her unmistakable spirit. “The faculty and staff at East Elementary are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Gigi,” said East Elementary school principal Amanda Brabham. “She was adored and cherished by us all,” Principal Brabham said.Ê “During this past school year Gillian (Gigi) had a difficult time identifying the color yellow. As school ended early, she finally did,” said Julie White, a teacher at East Elementary. “I told her, ‘Gigi you’re my forever, yellow flower.’ I will greatly miss my yellow flower,” White said. “She had a larger than life personality,” said Lynette Jones, a Kindergarten teacher at East Elementary. “We all loved the way she would come to me wanting snacks, to play with blocks and to play outside,” Jones said. “My heart is sad and the teachers and staff at East Elementary will miss her. We are better for having known her,” Jones said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Morse family as they go through this difficult time,” Principal Brabham said.

JACKSON COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report July 1, 2019 ~ June 30, 2020 On June 30, 2020, the City of Jackson completed its fifth and final year of its five-year Consolidated Plan, 2015-2019.Ê Programs and activities have been established and implemented to address the objectives for housing, homelessness, special needs and non-housing needs of the Jackson community.Ê During the fiscal year, 2019-2020, the City of Jackson expended approximately $724,129 in Community Development Block Grant and HOME Grant funds for these objectives. The Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report (CAPER), has been prepared to describe the activities funded by these programs including, Assessment of Five-Year Goals and Objectives, Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing, Affordable Housing Continuum of Care Narrative, Leveraging Resources, Self Evaluation and Other Actions.Ê Also, the Summary of Consolidated Plan Project, Summary of Accomplishments and Activity Summary for Grantee reports from the Integrated Disbursement and Information System (IDIS) will be included. I think he is a good man, and he ran a great campaign. I have the highest regard for him and his family.”Ê Gibbs IV is a graduate of Southwestern Christian College, Abilene Christian University and the Dedman School of Law at Southern Methodist University. For the last 13 years, he has been an assistant district attorney in Kaufman County and he currently serves as the chief felony prosecutor in the 86th District Court and a native of Terrell. With no Democratic challenger for the position, in January, he will take the seat of retiring Judge Mike Chitty.Ê While there have been black county officials elected in Kaufman County, Gibbs IV
is the first elected to the state district court in the county.
