On a recent trip to Pickwick Lake he had a great day fishing. He caught several shell crackers, blue gills and a huge bass.

After such a great day fishing he decided that fishing was back on his hobby agenda. With the Covid19 being in full swing he says socialization was slowed and he is unable to spend time with friends so he is excited about the opportunity to social distance and enjoy fishing in the Great Outdoors of West Tennessee. MPD MAKE ARREST IN MURDER OF CORINTHAIN GUNN Demarion Tyrel Mayberry charged with First Degree Murder

A Trenton man was arrested recently, charged with the murder of Corinthain Gunn, Sr. Demarion Tyrel Mayberry, 26, has been charged with First Degree Murder in the killing, which took place outside a house party on May 27.

When authorities responded to the shots fired call just after 11 p.m., they found Gunn lying in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Milan Police Chief Bobby Sellers said that investigators are still interviewing potential witnesses. “We’re still putting a lot of stuff together,” Chief Sellers told the Mirror-Exchange. “It appears that the two men had a previous beef, and were seen in the area together before the shooting. We also have proof that Mayberry was armed during the confrontation.”

WOMAN CHARGED WITH MURDER TAYLOR - WREG.COM- JUN 1, 2020 Harley Berry MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Kentucky woman was arrested after she allegedly stabbed a man multiple times leading to his death.Ê It happened Saturday, May 30, at a home in the 900 block of Sheridan in North Memphis.Ê Witnesses on the scene told investigators that the victim Elijah McQuery and Harley Berry were involved in an argument when the woman pulled out a knife. She reportedly stabbed him in the neck, torso and right arm before leaving the scene.Ê McQuery was rushed to the hospital where he later died, police said.ÊAfter the incident, Berry reportedly contacted her mother and admitted to stabbing the man during an argument.ÊBerry was arrested on Sunday and charged with second-degree murder.

JACKSON MADISON COUNTY NAACP CALLS FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM The events in Minneapolis have confirmed the weaponization of whiteness and the criminalization of blackness that has plagued our nation for generations. The murder of Mr. George Floyd, an African-American by four white Minneapolis Police officers, unfortunately is nothing new.

Recently Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and now George Floyd loss their lives due to police misconduct and citizen vigilantism/activists with gun’s. Our criminal justice system is broken in America. Its present structure denies human dignity and further corrupts the good men and women in the law enforcement profession. It has become a clear and present danger to us all.

Criminal Justice Reform is needed, now. Perhaps better candidate recruitment, effective supervision, additional professional training, the development of a citizen review board, smart state and national legislation, etc. We would welcome a broader participation of the white community stepping-up and demanding, along with black and brown brothers and sisters, justice for all, working for a better community together.

For the 2020-2021 academic school year, I have plans to expand the schools programming to Jackson, Tennessee.Ê On yesterday, I led the organized “I Can’t Breathe” Day of Protest Peaceful Rally. It was a success with over 300 attendants. The purpose of this protest was to bring awareness to the injustices in our country involving police brutality, mass incarceration, and civil and constitutional rights violations. The purpose was to also highlight the recent police involved killings of unarmed black people, something that goes back to the 1800’s.

It was an amazing and peaceful protest. Our next protest is scheduled for June 10, 2020, beginning at 4:30PM at the Old Hickory Mall.

“Some of us learned the lesson early. Some of us are not listening now.”

I remember waking up the morning that Martin Luther King was shot in Memphis.

Something didn’t sound right through our house. We had 3 channels and the sounds from the TV were not normal. Mom and dad told us what had happened and I was sad that a black man was shot for being black and standing up for equality of people of color.

Dad trained Walking Horses all of his life but at this time he was training in Spring Hill. Often at lunch, we would leave the barn and load up the truck with all of us to eat. It was quite a mixed load of humanity.Ê Black, white, kids and adults, trainers and grooms.

We pulled into Stan’s Restaurant in Spring Hill and we all piled out.Ê I don’t remember where my brother wasÊ but I remember Howard (one of my best friends) heading to the restaurant so ran to join him.Ê My dad called out, “Son, come on up here with us, you can’t go back there.”

“Dad, I’m going to eat with Howard.”

“Son, you can’t eat with Howard.”

“Why can’t I eat with Howard?”

“You just can’t eat with Howard.”Ê “OK, Howard, come up here with us.” Howard started to come with me to join my dad.

“Son, Howard can’t eat up here with us.” Howard turns and goes to the back door of the restaurant.

“Why can’t Howard come eat with us?”

“Son, we are not going to talk about this right now.”Ê I joined dad and the white folks and we ate. I played with the fancy little Juke boxes at the table and even went up to the sin-filled pinball machine and wondered why it was such a sin to play that game.

Lunch was over and we were heading to the truck.Ê I ran to the back of Stan’s Restaurant to get Howard. I saw where they ate. The room was full of men eating lunch from white paper bags. I called out to Howard, “You ready to go?” Howard, his dad Beau and other grooms joined us back at the truck to go back to the horse barn to work.

That day probably didn’t seem to be important to any of the other people involved that day.Ê To me, it was monumental.

Go forward to March 12 of this year. My mom had just passed away the day before and we were at the funeral home making plans for the service.

Dad wanted a horse trainer named Howard Atkinson to be a pallbearer. I thought dad was talking aboutÊ of Bob Atkinson from Savannah who had trained for years but dad kept talking about Howard Atkinson that lived in Spring Hill. I still was unable to think of who he was talking about.

My brother looked over to me and said, I think he’s talking about “Buck Wheat.” Those words took me back to Spring Hill and Stan’s Restaurant. Buck Wheat was what little Howard was called back in the day as a child my age.

We tried to find Howard’s number and call him. With no luck dad looked to me and said we are going to find Howard. So we headed to Spring Hill to find him. We did.

My 86 year old dad helped raise a black kid from Spring Hill and thought so much of him that we went looking for him . . . and yes we found him.

Having found Howard, we are both grown with differing careers. As we talked, Dad, Howard and I reminisced dad asked him to serve as a pallbearer. Howard agreed.Ê Dad added, “son, (talking to Howard) don’t you go to far because I want you to serve as a pallbearer at my funeral.” They both laughed and Howard agreed.

On March 12, decades of differences were overcome through love. A white 86 year-old man talking to a black kid that he helped raise in many ways.

I just don’t get racism! Some of my white brethren still do not hear the message that some have been trying to get to us for years.

We didn’t listen to the football player on his knee.

What we did listen to was the hatred that white folks threw at him. Our leadership said he dishonored the flag.

Some of us learned the lesson early. Some of us are not listening now.
