After riding around for a while Miranda and I decided to ride over and look at the cabins and she looks out and see a man on the balcony and said “that’s Tank sitting up there on that balcony”.

We stopped and broke bread with he and some friends in the cabin while looking out over the Tennessee River. The cabins can be rented with riverside views that have the ocean coast feel right here in the Good Outdoors of West Tennessee.

June 23, 2022 Tristyn Fletcher MILAN, Tenn. — A Milan man was found guilty of killing his mother following a near three day jury trial.

Benjamin Bradford was found guilty in the 2018 death of his mother, Gwendolyn Hall, according to District Attorney General Frederick H. Agee.

The incident occurred in July of 2018 on Ellis Street in Milan.

The jury found Bradford guilty of first-degree murder, felony murder, and tampering with evidence, according to the news release from the District Attorney.

The release says that the jury sentenced Bradford to life without the possibility of parole.

Cont’d from page 1 Police reported upon arrival, two people were found suffering with gunshot injuries.

According to JPD, one of the individuals died on the scene.

Preliminary evidence indicates police are not looking for any other person that may have been involved in this incident.

Police did not identify the individuals involved, but did confirm they are not Jackson residents.

Witnesses reported said they saw a total of three ambulances leaving the area one followed by a police car to the hospital.

Supreme Court Officially Overturns Roe V. Wade Cont’d from page 1

The decision mirrored a leaked draft opinion circulated earlier this month, with all the conservative justices on the high court approved.

Immediately following the initial leak of draft, and continuing over the weeks since, crowds have gathered outside the Supreme Court in Washington to protest.

“Stripping away a woman’s right to safe, legal abortion and to make our own health care decisions will have especially dire consequences for Black women and women of color across our country,” said Jessica Knight Henry, Deputy, and Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee.

“With Roe overturned, the stakes of this election have never been higher – Black voters will stand with Senate Democrats against Sen. Mitch McConnell and Republicans’ agenda that would make abortion illegal and impose new, cruel, and punishing restrictions on women of color and their families,” Henry stated.

Florida Democratic Rep. Val Demings said she’s furious and disappointed.

“I am ready to fight,” Demings declared in a statement. “We won’t go back. We must work re-

lentlessly to preserve our right to choose and our right to privacy. We must protect Roe v. Wade in federal law.”

Demings asserted that America can’t go back to a time when women were treated as second-class citizens who don’t have control over their bodies.

“Freedom means the ability to live your life as you choose,” Demings insisted. “You have a fundamental, God-given right to your own life, your family, your religion, your circumstances, your privacy, your values, your health, your body. I’m going to fight for that freedom and so will millions of others. This isn’t over.”

Associate Justice Samuel Alito wrote the opinion for the 6-3 majority, in which each of the liberal judges offered their dissent.

Alito called Roe v. Wade “egregiously wrong from the start.”

“Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences,” Alito wrote.

Dissenting Justice Stephen Breyer disagreed.

“After today, young women will come of age with fewer rights than their mothers and grandmothers,” Breyer wrote. “The majority accomplishes that result without so much as considering how women have relied on the right to choose or what it means to take that right away.”

The court’s decision ends core protection for women to make their own health care decisions, Georgia Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock stated.

“It is a departure from our American ideals to recognize and protect basic rights,” Warnock stated.

“This misguided decision is devastating for women and families in Georgia and nationwide. Across the country, states have already passed dangerous and uncompromising restrictions that put politicians in charge of health care, instead of women and doctors.”

Warnock’s staff called the congressman a “stalwart champion” of protecting women’s right to choose, including co-sponsoring the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would codify a woman’s right to reproductive health care.

Karen Carter Richards, NNPA’s Board Chair along with Dr. Benjamin F. Chavis Jr., the association’s president and CEO, issued the following joint statement: “The latest Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe V. Wade is a bad decision that will impact the civil rights of communities of color and particularly women. This is why elections have consequences. The NNPA will increase our efforts to turn out the Black vote in 2022.

Marcela Howell, president, and CEO of In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Health Imperative and a conglomerate of other women’s rights groups, joined in a statement rebuking the high court’s decision.

It Takes a Village…

I have addressed some very serious issues facing our teachers, schools, and country over the past two weeks. I must confess this was not by design; it was initiated by events taking place in our country this month which impacts our families, our children and our communities.

This is why education is so important. Young people need someone to explain the context to them so they can try to make some sense as to how this impacts them. Folks, this is why teachers are so vitally important. When you make our teachers teach the “test,” then it compromises the time they have to explain world events to tomorrow’s leaders. Do we really want our children getting their understanding of the world around them from social media?

Technology has its place in teaching today as we continue to craft the “new normal” in education. Be wary of results derived from testing and make sure to properly evaluate the numbers utilized to produce actionable data. I am a huge proponent of JMCSS and the strides they have made over the last two years. In my opinion, the future looks bright.

I attended the KIDS COUNT STATE OF THE CHILD Summit held at Union University and much like the school board members in attendance, I was appalled by the numbers discussed. Madison county ranked 95 out of 95 counties across Tennessee. I am not going to drill down too far on this as it was an all-day summit but I will highlight a few of the metrics discussed. Family and Community rank: 94. The percentage of births to unmarried females is 58.3%. The school suspension rate is 9.3%. Substantiated abuse and neglect per 1,000, 3.5%.

Economic and Well-Being rank: 93. Child poverty is 32.3%. Fair market rent, $1,129 with the median household income at $47,580. Think of all the single-parent households that are struggling to raise their children in this crushing environment. Gas prices are hovering around 5.00 per gallon and there are not enough child care centers and none that are open for third shift employees. Many single parents are not living paycheck to paycheck but shift to shift; relying upon tips to make it until payday. There are only 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week. Kids want, need, and desire to have quality time with their parent(s).

These are just two of four issues discussed at the summit. Perhaps you get the idea. I was heartened by the number of community, civic, education, clergy, and public servants in attendance to see how they could help and in many cases are helping already. There was a community panel on Family, Community, and Health. Dr. Elly Riley speaking on Adverse Childhood Experiences. An afternoon community panel on Education and Economic Well-Being. And of course, United Way CEO Mr. Matt Marshall gave a call to action to those in attendance.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I will wrap up this installment on a positive note. I met with my friend, mentor, and fellow author and education consultant Dr. Karessa Morrow at the Longhorn Restaurant for lunch this past Friday. She gave me a signed copy of her new book and promised to encourage me to finish my second book this summer. Her newest book is titled, “The Quiet Storm”: Understanding Mental Health. I plan to review it for the Jackson VIP Magazine in the next edition of “Read To Succeed.” We were sitting in a table in the middle of the restaurant and there was a young man and a lady in a booth right across from us. He inquired, “aren’t you Mr. Don Polley?” I said yes and he said he was one of my students at Medina Middle School this spring. He insisted on introducing me to his mother and I asked him if he would like to read my article in the CRIMESEEN EXAMINER and he said sure! Then he gave it to his mother and he said it was a great article. I had the young man in class for 6th grade math. Let’s let teachers get back to teaching.

Transition School To Work Jackson Madison County Schools work in collaboration with the Department of Human Services to bring the Transition School to Work (TSW) program to our district.

TSW includes the Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre-Ets) Program. Pre-Ets requires parental permission and is available to all students ages 14-22 with a documented learning or physical disability or a 504 Plan. Its emphasis is on five key components: job exploration, self-advocacy, post-secondary counseling, work based learning, and work readiness skills. Workplace Readiness Specialists implement the transition curriculum in group settings at all middle and high schools in the district.

The School System’s Special Education Department hosted their annual transition fair last Thursday as way for students to come out and get supplies, free haircuts, and information about a variety of resources.

The academy is for adults ranging from 18-years-old to 22-years-old, who are intellectually disabled.

JMCSS District Transition Case Manager and event organizer, Deshawndra Gillispie says: “We have this

event every year for Jackson-Madison County School students, for them to have a chance to come out and find out what agencies and organizations, what other opportunities they have here in the community that are available for students with disabilities.”

When a student prepares to exit high school, Transition School to Work then focuses on the provision of vocational rehabilitation (VR) services to those who are interested in employment after leaving high school. Students can participate in job shadowing, job sampling and internships at local businesses. The goal is a smooth, seamless transition from high school to post-high school career development and/or employment.

The proposed structure will be an approximately 7,000-9,000 sq. ft. building on a 0.7-acre lot at 125-131 McCorry St, Jackson, TN. The building may offer space for up to 22 non-congregate guest rooms, each containing area for a twin bed, sink, water closet, shower, mini fridge and microwave. Additional space for case management office, meeting rooms, laundry, and storage will be included in the floor plan.

The project is estimated to serve approximately 20-30 men at risk of homelessness annually through direct shelter services. Ninety percent of individuals served by this project will fall within the national objectives of Low and Moderate Income.
