Traffic stop in Medina yields illegal drugs, gun BRADLEY DAVIS

June 18, 2019ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff MEDINA, Tenn. — Medina police say a traffic stop led officers to drugs, including a substance they believe is fentanyl, and a gun Friday afternoon.

Police say officers stopped 31-year-old Dexter Craig Lambert, of Medina, just before 1:30 p.m. for a stop sign violation. Officers noticed the driver, later identified as Lambert, acting suspiciously.

Phillip departed this life on June 8, 2019 at 9:30pm at his home in Humboldt, TN. Throughout his life he attended Crockett County School District. Phillip often did work at local factories doing forklift operations. In 1999, Phillip and Shaquanna Bufford became husband and wife.

JACKSON POLICE INVESTIGATE JUNE 12TH HOMICIDE Ricky Maddox, age twenty-three, was found by Jackson Police outside his residence at 392 N. Liberty Street suffering from gunshot wounds.Ê Maddox died after he was transported to a local hospital for treatment for his injuries.

On June 12th, at approximately 11:10 p.m., officers with the Jackson Police Department responded to the area of 392 N. U.S. Marshals announce capture of man wanted in Holly Springs murder JUNE 17, 2019, - wreg.com Tramayne Faulkner HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. — A Holly Springs man wanted in connection to a murder earlier this year has been captured by the U.S. Marshals.

In March 2019ÊEdeldridge Balfour, 27, was killed after being shot multiple times in the 100 block of Chatham Drive. Police identified the suspects as 23-year-old Tramayne Rashad Faulkner and charged him with attempted and first-degree murder.

Faulkner was captured on June 11 and his bond set at $1 million

Jackson Police arrest wanted suspect Today, June 13th, at approximately 1:20 p.m., Jackson Police arrest Imario Wright for two outstanding warrants through the City of Jackson and also for a warrant issued through Madison County.Ê Officers patrolling the downtownÊobserved Imario walking in the area of 111 E. Main Street when they attempted to take him into custody.Ê Imario attempted to evade apprehension by fighting and running.Ê Jackson Police were able to arrest Imario only after deploying a department issued Taser.

At the time of his apprehension, Imario was in possession of a stolen pistol, from another jurisdiction, and a felony amount of marijuana.Ê Imario will be arraigned in Jackson City Court the next business day.

Traffic stop in Medina yields illegal drugs, gun CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Medina police requested assistance from a Madison County K-9 unit, and the K-9 alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle.

Police say officers searched the vehicle and found pills, cocaine and a substance officers suspect may be fentanyl.

A loaded handgun was also found in the vehicle.

Lambert (right) is currently charged with manufacture, sale, delivery of schedule II narcotics, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.

Dr. Louis E. Cunningham receives “Healthcare Legacy Award” On Saturday, April 20, 2019 at the Great Hall & Conference Center, Germantown, TN, the “First Collins Chapel Connectional Hospital Celebration Luncheon” was held. The event, hosted by Bishop and Mrs. Henry M. Williamson, Sr., presented “Healthcare Legacy Awards to thirteen (13) individuals for their Presenters: Clarence Scott & Deborah Harris; Dr. Louis E Cunningham (Center) outstanding dedication and service to the healthcare profession. Dr. Louis E. Cunningham, a native Jackson cardiologist and Owner/CEO of Mid-South Health Center, was among the well-deserved chosen recipients.

Special luncheon program guests included Dr. Logan Hampton and the Lane College Acapella Choir.

Collins Chapel was the first private hospital to treat Black people or provide a facility in which Black doctors and nurses could practice and train. Bishop Williamson’s remarks highlighted “The Power of the CME Connection !”

In 1954, the College of Bishops of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, under the leadership of Bishop J. Adult Day Care Arthur Hamlett, led and built a new hospital for African-Americans in Memphis, TN. to Lynching Memorial

The Madison County Commission voted against the lynching memorial being placed on the grounds of the Madison County Courthouse . Those voting against the proposal included AfricanAmerican Commissioners Aaron Ellison, Terry Spearman, and Luther Mercer.

Merriweather Censure ALL BARK, NO BITE The Madison County Commission voted Monday to formerly censure Jackson Madison County School Board member Morris Merriweather “and do condemn his wrongful conduct in the strongest terms.”

No news there. It was expected and it happened just so.

More newsworthy perhaps; and in a way, joined at the hip of the matter leading to the censure of Merriweather is the recent announcement by local contractor Harold Crocker that there might be a funding problem as it pertains to building a new Jackson Central Merry High School.

It was Morris Merriweather who campaigned vigorously for a new JCM to replace the one recently abandoned by the school system.

It was Morris Merriweather who implored the public to keep a watchful eye of the ‘power brokers’ who pushed for a new Madison Academic High School and a new Pope as well. “Let’s insure that funding is also on the table for a new JCM,” he said.

It was Morris Merriweather who was accused of being a troublemaker on the school board for his dogmatic approach to insuring that the people of his district would not be left behind. “He’s not a team player,” some said.

I don’t mean to come off as a Merriweather cheerleader, rather I’m just calling it like I see it.

People in power often use tactics that cut against the grain when it comes to achieving their goals. One such ploy is to cast aspersions on all detractors - in this case Merriweather was public enemy number one.

For staying the course and not abandoning the cause for JCM, Merriweather was attacked from all corners of the media - TV, radio, and social. He even had two local legislators draw up a bill to have school board members elected out after being elected in to office. So outlandish is the infamous “Merriweather Law” that the only way it was passed was that it only affected Madison County.

Human nature affords us two basic options when cornered, fight or flight. Some will elect to subside, but not Merriweather. He took on a fighting stance, after all, he was elected to “fight for his district.”

When in a fight, often low blows are thrown - intentional or not. Well when Merriweather threw a few, he was censured.

To paraphrase President Andrew Jackson when commenting on Justice John Marshall’s decision to honor a treaty with the Indians in 1832 - the county commissioners have their censure, now let them enforce it.

Madison County Commission Excuse for Racism June 17, 2019 Today the Madison County Commission voted to defeat the “citizen’s request” to place a marker on the Madison County Courthouse lawn in remembrance of African Americans who were lynched on its very ground.

“During the period between the Civil War and World War II, thousands of African Americans Êwere lynched in the United States. Lynchings were violent and public acts of torture that traumatized black people throughout the country and was largely tolerated by state, federal and local officials in the United States. These lynching’s were terrorism. Ê”Terror lynchings” peaked between 1880 and 1940 and claimed the lives of African American men, women, and children who was forced to endure the fear, humiliation, and barbarity of this widespread phenomenon unaided (Equal Justice Initiative or EJI).

Madison County did not escape this behavior.Ê Racism continues to be taught at home, in our institutions, and practice throughout our social circles, masquerading as an illusion of inclusion. Ê The proposal before the county commission is an acknowledgement that it happened, and yes it is painful but should not be in dispute.Ê It is unfortunate that the majority of the commissioners do not know “their” history. What we witness today was the lack of courage to accept the truth and the ignorance of not knowing the difference.

Thanks for your time and effort. When I read page ten headline “104 Years In Prison Is Cruel & Excessive”, I knew my fight for freedom and justice must continue.

Black people we must not ignore the truth, our justice system is broken. Cruel and Excessive sentences are given to us more likely than white people committing the same crime. They throw us in prison on bogus charges along with excessive time hoping we give up. Then by the time we realize it’s not right, we are time barred lost in the system forever.

I seek justice until justice is served. Some may be sadden by my truth, others may laugh at my truth, but the truth still remains “104 Years In Prison Is Cruel & Excessive”.

This is cruel and excessive punishment, racially motivated, abuse of authority, unconstitutional, illegal, etc.....Ê I cannot fight this fight alone. JMCSS schools not guaranteed to reopen, awaits project approval

By Malorie Paine - CSENews The process to reopen Jackson Central Merry High School and Madison Academic has been delayed, and the school district at this point is unsure when they will reopen.

Ray Washington, who will become Interim Superintendent July 1, said the school district is waiting to see if they’ll be chosen as a tax credit project. Washington said agencies are awarded federal tax credit opportunities that assist in various development projects. Jackson Madison County School System is one of many possible projects in a national search. Agencies are awarded federal tax credits, then those agencies select projects they want to complete based on economic impact, Washington said.

The process has been delayed about six months because the federal government was delayed in releasing the funds.

There is no certainty that JCMSS will be selected, but Washington said the district will work with a marketing firm to pitch the project.

“Some agencies like to focus on education and others like to focus on economic development, we have all of that,” Washington said.

In an email to school board members, Washington wrote that there are currently three organizations interested in the project, and all three of the organizations have more than enough to cover 100% of the project. Washington said the public private partnership is rare in Tennessee, but not necessarily in other states.

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the school district will be selected though.

School board member Morris Merriweather said he is remaining optimistic about securing the Ray Washington partnership.

“It’s still early, and I want everyone to know that we’re staying confident as a board,” Merriweather said.

School board chairman Keith Alexander said that in the case the public-private partnership falls through, the board would have to start from scratch on reopening JCMHS and Madison Academic. However, like Merriweather, Alexander is remaining optimistic.

“I’m trusting what they tell me, and I’m going from there,” Alexander said.

Washington said he too is remaining hopeful, and is expecting more clarity to come in August with whether or not the project will be moving forward.

School board member James Johnson said that a plan was approved at Monday’s county commission meeting regarding funding for the two schools.

“In the case that we don’t get 100%, the county, city and school district would split any leftover funds,” Johnson said. “It would be taxpayer money, but we would have to do that in the long run anyways.”

Alexander said if the project does not come through, then a conversation between board members will need to be had and a 10-year plan will need to be set in place for the district.

Scott Conger

Conger carries on family tradition

By Malorie Paine - CSENews June 18, 2019 - Jackson, TN – Unofficial election results show that Scott Conger will be the next mayor of Jackson, according to data published on the Madison County Election Commission website.

The runoff election between Conger and Jerry Woods ended 7 p.m. Tuesday, and after early votes, absentee votes and all precincts have reported, Conger received more than 63% of the necessary 50% plus one to win.Ê Neither Woods nor Conger were immediately available for comment; however, “we did it” was shared from Conger’s campaign Facebook page just shortly after election results were announced.Ê Conger ran on the platform of attracting and keeping a younger generation of citizens, working to strengthen the school system, create safer neighborhoods, increase tourism to Jackson, and more.

The results are unofficial until confirmed by the Madison County Election Commission.

Once confirmed, Conger will become the third in his family to serve as mayor.

Congratulations to Angelika Gilbert and Kadarius Scott who were selected by the White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities as 2019 HBCU Competitiveness Scholars. This is the initiative’s highest student recognition. Angelika and Kadarius were selected among highly distinguished HBCU students.

They were chosen due to their academic achievement, campus and community involvement and their entrepreneurial spirit. They will represent Lane College in September at the 2019 National HBCU Week Conference.
