SUSIES’ BIRTHDAY WISH

West Tennessee OUTDOORS

All I want for my Birthday is a fun day fishing in the Great with Ray Jones Outdoors of West Tennessee. SEND THOSE PHOTOS TO Well she got it. numberonecoach@hotmail.com Susie is a retired United or 731-694-8614. States Air Force Major and also retired from a second career as an educator. She now spends her time preparing meals for all major family gatherings like Christmas and Thanksgiving. She spent many years faithfully serving our nation as one of few Black women to reach the rank of Major in the United States Air Force. She has traveled the world extensively to protect and serve so that we may observe the freedom that we now have. When trying to decide how to spend her birthday it was suggested that she spend it fishing since eating fresh fish is her favorite hobby now. What better thing could you do than to go fishing and catch your own fresh fish and she did just that. She had a great Birthday while social distancing on a West Tennessee lake with her family. Susie already has everything, now she has added a great day fishing to that list.Ê Be sure to find out what your relative wants for their birthday before you go spending money on something they don’t even want. Guest Column by Elvis Rogers:

VIRAL VINNIE AND THE COVID COWBOY The kind of goofy mass hysteria that we saw with the toilet paper panic over the last couple of months only happens once in a lifetime....or maybe twice if you live long enough .I saw it once before. It was in 1973 that a congressman from Wisconsin issued a press release warning that “The government printing office is facing a serious shortage of paper”. He followed up on this by sending out another a few weeks later that said “ The U.S. could face a serious shortage of toilet paper in the next few months.”␣ People didn’t pay a lot of attention to this and it gained only slight notice by the press. One important person did notice. That person was Johnny Carson. When Carson jokingly made the same comment to 20 million viewers on his television show they took notice. The general public might ignore a congressman, but not Johnny Carson! That monologue was the spark that ignited a panic very similar to the one we just witnessed. Madness erupted. Toilet paper became a treasured item for the next three months as customers wiped out all the stores and depleted the supply chain. They made the warning become a reality. Everybody likes to be the first person to know something and the first to report it. Long ago it took a long time for a rumor to grow to the point of coming full circle. Often by that time people were able to more accurately learn the truth. That’s not true anymore. Now everything is instant. In 1973 the stock market had lost 45% of its value. There were rumors of gasoline shortages, electricity shortages, even shortages of things like onions and other staple items. The public had developed a “shortage psychology” of sorts. Much the same can be said for our current situation. We have developed a “disaster psychology” of sorts. Everything seems to be coming apart at the seams. Still there are always those that can find the humor (and sometimes profit)t in these happenings. That leads me back to the title of this story. I’m outside in the parking lot of a truck plaza in Kentucky. A man in a cowboy costume (The Covid Cowboy) and a man dressed as the grim reaper (Viral Vinnie) are extending rolls of toilet paper from the end of what appears to be a long broom handle to the men parked in big-rig trucks and also those␣ that ar e coming and going from the store. Actually only one of them is extending toilet paper. The other is extending a bucket with “donations” written on it. Maybe later the local T.V. station will come out to film it. Maybe someone will put it␣ onYou Tube or Facebook. Maybe they will just swap toilet paper for beer money.␣ Either way maybe someone else (not me) will write about it in another 47 years, that is if history repeats itself......and it always does. If you’re young start saving toilet paper now for that day. That’s how superheros are made. Elvis Rogers␣ elvisrogers@yahoo.com

PETITION CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF MADISON COUNTY SHERIFF June 15, 2020 Brittany Kyles JACKSON, Tenn.– “We need him removed,” said community activist Tracy Boyd. A petition calling for the removal of Madison County Sheriff John Mehr has been created following By ‘Downtown’ Rickey Brown rickeylynnbrown@hotmail.com a request for more money to be added to the sheriff’s department budget. Sheriff Mehr said during Monday’s interview he was brought up to speed on the petition, but had not previously been made aware of it. “I was elected for this position, and I’ve done just what the people have elected me to do. We brought a lot to this county, and we’re here to serve all the people,” Mehr said. Boyd started the petition Friday, and almost 200 people have signed it. “We don’t need money going into the prisons. We need money going into better schools,” Boyd said. Boyd said instead of giving the department more money, the county commission should reallocate the money into the community. “Who would answer those calls? Wou know, who would answer everything that takes place? Who would handle the jail? There wouldn’t be anybody,” Sheriff Mehr said. CrimeSEEN Congratulations to

MEET DESHAWNDRA GILLISPIE OR YOU CAN CALL HER The Jackson-Madison County School System recently named

‘COACH RED’

DESHAWNDRA GILLISPIE as the new Girls Head Basketball Coach at North Side High School. Gillispie is an alum of the JMCSS having played at Denmark High before graduating from South Side High. Coach Red recently took to social media (facebook) to thank her friends and family for their support.

IN HER OWN WORDS: As many of you all know, along with my current position with the district’s central office, I have assumed another role! I have a chance to teach and coach a game I love: Basketball. I started my career as a West High Tiger and finished high school as a Hawk. I played for the JSCC Lady Generals a couple of years and assisted with the Crusaders at Liberty Tech for a season. I have cheered my daughter, four nieces, a couple of nephews, my twin sister(The Athletic Director and Assistant Principal, my cousin (the Boys Basketball Head Coach), and my nephew (a currentstarter on the team) all at SSHS for as long as I can remember... Now, I’m headed to the other side of town as head coach of the Lacy Linians at North Side High School. I appreciate all of the texts, calls, inboxes, shares and posts on social media. My heart smiled and I am very humbled by all of your support. #Tigers4Life #HAWKNATION #JSCC #LadyCrusaders #OneTribe
