Goat is said to be very nutritional without a lot of fat. It is served in many eating establishments in the world and here in West Tennessee. Although they are said to eat anything goats are nibblers and are used to clear out grass areas at times. As these upcoming holidays arrive keep your eyes open for the smell of goat meat being grilled in the neighborhood and you just might be able to get in on it. MAN ACCUSED OF KILLING BROTHER OVER CAR, POLICEÊSAY APRIL 30, 2019, BYÊERYN TAYLOR - wreg.com MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis man was charged with manslaughter after the shooting death of his brother on Monday. According to police, Darrian Culp and Kendrick Culp were arguing over a vehicle in the 3400 block of Royal Wood Drive on Monday. The argument apparently escalated resulting in Darrian Culp pulling out a gun and shooting his brother once. He then fled the scene, witnesses said. Kendrick Culp was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. A short time later, Darrian Culp reportedly turned himself in to police. He was charged with voluntary manslaughter and employment of a firearm.

GRANDMOTHER STABBED 16 TIMES WITH BUTCHER KNIFE,ÊSCREWDRIVER APRIL 29, 2019, BYÊLUKE JONES, - wreg.com LEE COUNTY, Ark. — A 64-year-old woman is recovering in Texas after being stabbed at least 16 times while visiting her granddaughter in Lee County, Arkansas. Donna Jones and her son had traveled to Lee County to see her DONNA JONES granddaughter off to prom. But Queen Jones, 17, said having her ex-con uncle there put a damper on the occasion. “Telling me about crazy things he have done, crazy things he planned to do,” Queen Jones said. Things got really scary April 16 when the teen learned those plans involved her and her family. “He just goes into saying how he was gonna chop me up and burn me, throw me in the field, have me for barbecue ‘cause he was a dragon and he had to eat,” she said. After first painting teardrops on his face with black nail polish, Jones said her uncle was sitting with her family in their living room on Highway 121 when he suddenly snapped. She said he ran to the kitchen, grabbed a butcher knife and began stabbing his mother. “When he started cutting me, I’m like, ‘Oh, hell no,’” said Donna Jones. “He started stabbing her in her face and her neck,” said Brandie Williams, Queen Jones’ mother. Williams and her daughter managed to make it to the safety of her daughter’s bedroom. When the butcher knife finally broke, Donna Jones was able to join them, but their safety was short-lived. Queen Jones said her uncle broke down the door and began attacking her grandmother with two screwdrivers. Williams and her daughter scrambled to a next-door neighbor’s house where they called for help, but Donna Jones was trapped. “I started kicking him in his private parts … fighting back,” she said. She was able to get free and locked herself in another room. She said deputies finally arrived and took her son to jail. WREG isn’t naming the suspect since it’s unclear if he’s been officially charged. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office didn’t return repeated calls and emails Monday.

On April 28 around 9:50 p.m., Jackson police responded to a robbery at Captain D’s, located at 1761 S. Highland Avenue. The preliminary investigation revealed that two armed suspects entered the business and took personal items from employees and cash from the business. The suspects were last seen running southwest from the business and into the wood line. There were no reported injuries. Officers set up a perimeter, and a Police K-9 searched the area. The K-9 recovered evidence related to the robbery. The investigation is ongoing. Suspect 1 was wearing a blue hoodie, black pants, and white gloves with a bandana over his face. He was armed with a black handgun. Suspect 2 was wearing a gray hoodie, black pants, and white gloves with a bandana over his face. He was armed with a long gun. NAACP CONDEMNS SELMER POLICE CONT’S FROM PAGE 1 “Folks that are supposed to be keeping the peace posting racist post is alarming,” said Gloria Sweet-Love, President of the Tennessee State Conference of the NAACP. The Selmer police officer was given a reprimand and two day suspension by the Selmer Police Department. “A written reprimand and a two day suspension is a slap on the wrist for an egregious statement like that“ said Sweet-Love. Officer Pilkington has since deleted the Facebook post and posted an apology on his Facebook page. Pilkington’s post reads “I would like to sincerely apologize for a picture I shared the other day depicting Margaret Sanger and a quote she made depicting racism” I am sorry in that I failed to add any content to my share and I recognize at face value it may be construed that I agreed with the quote. I sincerely ask for forgiveness and hope that everyone understands the nature of the post and why I shared it” said Pilkington. “When we are not telling those in the ranks this is wrong and not acceptable, then our best and brightest who protect us and serve are being diminished,“ said Harrell Carter, President of the Jackson Madison County NAACP Branch. Both the Selmer Police Department And McNairy County Sheriff’s office declined to comment.

HEALTH DEPARTMENT URGES HEPATITIS VACCINATION JACKSON, Tenn. – The Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department joins the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in recognizing May as Hepatitis Awareness Month. We urge citizens to get vaccinated and know their health status. In the United States, the most common types of viral hepatitis are hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. Hepatitis A is a vaccinepreventable, contagious liver infection. It’s usually transmitted through the fecal-oral route or by consuming contaminated food or water. Hepatitis A symptoms include fatigue, low appetite, stomach pain, nausea, and jaundice. People who get hepatitis A usually recover and do not have lasting liver damage. CDC recommends all children get the hepatitis A vaccine at one year of age. Hepatitis B is a liver infection. It can be transmitted through sexual contact, sharing needles or other druginjection equipment, or from mother to baby at birth. Chronic hepatitis B infection can cause serious liver damage and liver cancer. CDC recommends the hepatitis B vaccine for all infants at birth and for adults at risk. “In today’s world of emerging and established diseases that cannot be prevented with vaccinations as of yet, we are lucky to have such a high rate of protection with the hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines,” Epidemiologist Shanna Shearon said. Hepatitis C is a liver

infection. It is usually spread when someone comes into contact with blood from an infected person. In the past, hepatitis C spread through blood transfusions and organ transplants. Today, most people become infected by sharing needles or other equipment to inject drugs. Hepatitis C can lead to liver disease, liver failure, liver cancer, and death. There is currently no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C. It can be treated and even cured. People with hepatitis C often have no symptoms. CDC recommends anyone

Early Childhood Leaders Finalize Kindergarten Readiness Targets - C ’ 1 ONT D FROM PAGE

The Early Childhood Leadership Collaborative has been meeting regularly since its beginning in late October to develop the Kindergarten Readiness Targets. The purpose of the list of targets is to inform parents of the most critical skills needed for success at the beginning of kindergarten. This list will create a common language between all stakeholders throughout the Jackson area. “Collaboration among early childhood educators is critical to building momentum for our youngest students” stated Dr. Jared Myracle, Chief Academic Officer for JMCSS. “The community is very fortunate to have a group of professionals dedicated to serving our youngest students and their families.” Several early childhood professionals throughout the Jackson area attended the meetings. One member, Matt Marshall, Executive Director at Hands Up! Preschool stated, “Hands Up! Preschool is so proud to serve as a community partner with the Early Childhood Leadership Collaborative here in Madison County. It has been inspiring to work together with some of the best early educators in our community to develop this list of Kindergarten Readiness Targets. We look forward to our continued partnership for the benefit of every family in our community.” The pamphlet created includes resources for parents, activities to support early learning, and a simple checklist of skills that are listed as targets. “Our goal is for this to be a helpful tool that provides parents with some ideas and support for incoming kindergarteners” stated Mary Myers, Leader of Early Foundations for JMCSS. A Matter of Opinion . . . 104 YEARS IN PRISON IS CRUEL AND EXCESSIVE Dear CSE News Editorial Team, I am writing you to speak on Prison Reform, also I wanted my story to be heard. Truthfully, I hope you will use your platform to help me. My reason for getting in contact is due to our people being over sentenced and punished to the fullest extent. Doing unreasonable time for crimes not even carrying that much time. Corey Gray became a victim to just that. Just six years ago I shot at a home not killing or shooting anyone, and neither did the Jackson Police Department find any bullet fragments inside this home proving that this house was not shot into. Still I was convicted of 13 felonies: 4 Attempted First Degree Murder, 4 Aggravated Assaults, 4 Employing a Firearm during Commission of a Dangerous Felony.Ê Judge Roy Morgan with the help of District Attorney Jody Pickens sentenced me to 104 years in prison. That’s two (2) life sentences. Now don’t get me wrong. I did the crime and I must do the time, but 104 YEARS IN PRISON IS CRUEL AND EXCESSIVE. I will have to live here in prison for the rest of my life, when I haven’t killed anyone or shot anyone. This should have “Our People” upset, because so many of “Our Kind” are being thrown away in prison to suffer and be forgotten. Then to make matters worse, it’s a major case involving the City Court in Jackson, Tennessee. OPINION TENNESSEE’S VENGEFUL LAWMAKERS After enormous black turnout in the 2018 midterms, Republicans are advancing a bill that would penalize voter registration drives. ByÊCliff Albright • April 24, 2019 - The NY Times The Tennessee legislature will soon vote on a bill that is deliberately intended to suppress black turnout, even though Tennessee is among the five states with the lowest voter participation. The bill in the senate would create some of the most aggressive regulations on large-scale voter registration in the nation — like civil penalties for groups that unintentionally file incomplete voter registration forms. It would impose criminal sanctions on organizers who don’t attend training sessions run by local officials and on groups that fail to mail in voter registration forms in a short 10-day window. Things like typos and missing entries are inevitable. That’s why there are already checks and balances; the election commission verifies voter information against state databases.ÊThis doesn’t create an unmanageable burden on state officials, nor does it require a draconian bill. Why don’t lawmakers make voter registrationÊautomatic, instead of making it much more difficult? This is a clear attack on the successful efforts to mobilize black voters during the 2018 midterm elections. Close to 90,000 black voters were registered by theÊTennessee Black Voter Project, led by the activist Tequila Johnson andÊthe Equity Alliance, which partner with my organization, theÊBlack Voters Matter Fund. In Davidson County, whose county seat is Nashville, turnout was consistent with a presidential year — there was a remarkable 81 percent increase over the last midterm election. In Shelby County, which contains Memphis, the state’s largest city, turnout spiked 50 percent over the last midterm election to nearly 100,000 voters. These Republican lawmakers,Êled by Secretary of State Tre Hargett, fear the results of an expanding black electorate: victories for Democratic and progressive candidates. In Shelby County, for example, a blue wave flipped key positions like county mayor and sheriff and control of the county commission in August 2018. In Nashville, voters approved an importantÊballot initiative establishing a community oversight boardfor police accountability. Even before the massive 2018 voter registration drives, Knoxville activists ran a slate of progressive candidates for City Council andÊsuccessfully electedÊthe city’s first Indian-American woman as a first-time candidate. In short, black-led, community-based organizations throughout Tennessee have been registering more voters, turning them out to vote and winning more elections for progressive issues and candidates. The fact that racial progress here has resulted in a white backlash is consistent with Tennessee history. Tennessee’s attack on blackled voter registration is also an escalation of similar strategies seen in Georgia. While he was secretary of state, Brian Kemp aggressively pursued criminal investigations against voter registration groups like the New Georgia Project, founded by Stacey Abrams. Now, Tennessee’s secretary of state is taking that to the next level. If we’re not careful, this strategy could spread across the country even faster than the wave of voter ID laws. The many presidential candidates seeking the Democratic nomination ought to prioritize voting rights and condemn voter suppression. Speaking out and helping to defeat this bill would be a good start. But the candidates must do more to address the broader issue of voting rights. They should forcefully express the urgent need for the For the People Act, which addresses voting access, election security, political spending and more. And at least one candidate must be willing to go even bigger than the For the People Act and demand the voting rights equivalent of the Green New Deal. Going “big” would include consequences for people who violate voting rights. Like Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia, who effectively stole the election from Stacey Abrams, they are often allowed to prosper from their illegal and unethical actions. If Tennessee wants to criminalize people, let them be bad actors who engage in voter suppression. We must view the failures of this nation’s electoral processes in general — and voter suppression in particular — as existential threats, just as much as climate change or economic inequality. Investigation released its annual ‘Crime on Campus’ publication, detailing the volume and nature of crime on Tennessee’s college and university campuses. The report compiles data submitted to TBI through the state’s Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS). Among the report’s findings: Crime reported by Tennessee colleges and universities decreased 15.5% from 2017 to 2018. Robbery offenses decreased significantly, by 50%, in the same time period. The overall category of ‘Sex Offenses – Non-Consensual’ decreased by 17.8% in 2018, with reported ‘Rape’ offenses decreasing 10.2%. “This report will hopefully assist law enforcement, institution administrators, and government officials in planning their efforts in the fight against crime and create an awareness that crime exists as a threat in our communities,” said TBI Director David Rausch. “I wish to express my appreciation to all institutions of higher learning that consistently support a unified crime reporting system in Tennessee.” The full report is available for review on the TBI’s website: www.tn.gov/tbi. The event was held in Minneapolis, MN last week. Brown, the son of Beverly and Keith Brown of Jackson anchored the Madison Team that finished 3rd overall in the national competition. Union trustees approve $95.7 million budget, Newsworthy celebrate Oliver’s 5-year anniversary LANE JACKSON, Tenn. — Union University trustees at their April 26 meeting approved a $95.7 million budget for the 2019-2020 fiscal year, including nearly $2 million in additional financial aid for students. Trustees also approved a number of Union faculty members for promotions and tenure and celebrated the five-year anniversary of Union President Samuel W. “Dub” Oliver and his wife Susie. “One of the things we’re committed to is making a Union education affordable for families,” Oliver said. “With the addition of almost $2 million budgeted for financial aid, that will open the door for a number of students to attend Union who otherwise might not have been able to.”
