On March 13, the 26-year-old aspiring nurse was killed in her apartment, shot at least eight times by Louisville police officers who officials have said were executing a drug warrant, according to a lawsuit filed by the family, accusing officers of wrongful death, excessive force and gross negligence.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Rock ‘n’ roll pioneer Little Richard will be buried atÊOakwood University, a historically black university in Huntsville, Alabama.

Gerald Kibble, director of Oakwood Memorial Gardens, said the private funeral will be held Wednesday and will not be open to the public.

Little Richard’s close friend Pastor Bill Minson said the singer was an alumnus of the university. Little RichardÊdiedÊSaturday at the age of 87 in Tennessee due to bone cancer.

“Not one person has talked to me. Not one person has explained anything to me,” Tamika Palmer, Taylor’s mother, said in an interview. “I want justice for her. I want them to say her name. There’s no reason Breonna should be dead at all.”

According to the lawsuit, filed April 27, Louisville police executed a search warrant at Taylor’s home, looking for a man who did not live in Taylor’s apartment complex and had already been detained when officers came to Taylor’s apartment after midnight. Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker, was also in the apartment and, according to the lawsuit, shot at officers when they attempted to enter without announcing themselves. The lawsuit alleges that police fired more than 20 rounds of ammunition into the apartment.

Taylor’s death is the kind that could have drawn national headlines in the Black Lives Matter era, like the deaths ofÊSandra BlandÊandÊAtatiana Jefferson, but has gotten little attention amid news of the spread of the coronavirus. The pandemic headlines were partly to blame in drowning out news of Taylor’s death, but so, too, is gender bias, said attorney Ben Crump, who has risen to prominence in recent years as the lawyer for several high-profile cases involving black men killed by police and neighborhood vigilantes.

None of the officers involved have been charged in connection with the shooting.

Walker, a licensed gun owner who was not injured in the incident, was arrested and faces charges of first-degree assault and attempted murder of a police officer.

BOYFRIEND ARRESTED KennethWalker was charged with attempted murder of a police officer, aggravated assault, and detained unlawfully after firing upon police when they entered the wrong house in plain clothes on a no-knock warrant. His girlfriend Breonna Taylor was murdered in her own home. None of the officers have been fired, arrested, or charged.

KILLER COPS Officials in Louisville Ky. have now named the suspected race soldiers involved in shooting death of an innocent Black woman namedÊBreonna Taylor. Taylor, wasÊa 26-year-old emergency medical technician who was shot and killed in the middle of the night while she was asleep by Louisville MetroÊPoliceÊon March 13. They are Jonathan Mattingly, Brett Hankison, and Myles Cosgrove.

Taylor’s boyfriend, Kenneth Walker who was also at the home when the officers served a no-knock warrant to the wrong apartment, opened fire on the intruding race soldiers performing an illegal raid. One of Walker’s bullet allegedly struck Jonathan Mattingly in the leg.

CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — Authorities arrested a woman after she intentionally set a car on fire with her toddler inside, the Columbia Police Department said.

Caylin Allise Watson, 23, was sent to the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Columbia, South Carolina on the following charges: Attempted murder, Arson, first degree, Arson, third degree, Abuse, Infliction of great bodily injury upon a child The incident happened onÊInterstate-126 at around 1:30 p.m.

Sunday.

While parked on the interstate, Watson set her car on fire while her 14month-old son sat inside, police said.

WACH Fox News spoke to one woman who went to high school with Watson, and she said she was shocked.Ê “It was just wild to me.

I would’ve never expected anybody I knew to do something like that, especially not Caylin. I can’t think of any sane person doing this especially to a child,” Dallas Tenley said.Ê The child suffered severe burns and is in critical condition at the Augusta Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia.

4 DEAD, 1 INJURED IN CHESTER CO. WRECK May 17, 2020 Clint Eiland- wbbjtv7.com CHESTER COUNTY, Tenn. — Details are emerging from a fatal wreck in Chester County.

Tragedy struck on Highway 200, where a fatal wreck left four dead and one injured.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the crash occurred Saturday afternoon. The crash report says an Infinity G35 was travelling south, while a Nissan Altima was travelling north. On the narrow section of road, the Altima crossed the center and struck the Infiniti head on. The Altima crashed down the side of the road, while the other car remained in the roadway.

The wreck resulted in four deaths: the driver of Infinity, 22-year-old Tyler Stablein and three people in the other car. Those three were 16-year-old Kaylee Daniel, 16-year-old Cayla Lenon and 17-year-old Roselyn Roberts. All three were students at Chester County High School.

Another 14-year-old passenger in the Altima was injured and is currently in the hospital at this time.

Where We Are A lot can happen in a year. I hope the Class of 2020 gets that lesson from the events of their senior year in High School. It looks as though they will be able to have a graduation ceremony after all. They will become known as the first graduating class to experience remote learning.

It is my hope that they have utilized the tremendous efforts on the part of their teachers and learned how to use other means to acquire the knowledge that they had been taught in school. After graduation will be their time to rise to shine!

The prospects for the fall are uncertain at this point as there are still issues pertaining to COVID-19 that will have to be addressed. This should be an interesting summer at the Central Office of JMCSS.

I hope they appreciate the incredible job that has been done by Mr. Ray Washington during the interim between Dr. Jones and Dr. King. Both have had distinguished accomplishments in education. The recent history of the school board would indicate that simply checking all the boxes is not enough to stay in the position for an extended time.

Dr. Jared Myracle will be sorely missed in his capacity as CAO but I am confident that he will have a bright future ahead of him. His impact on curriculum should produce significant results this next school year. Dr. Marlon King will have to deal with a 10M dollar cut in the budget for the upcoming school year in addition to many other issues to be addressed. Let us hope that Mr. Washington agrees to return to his former capacity as COO at JMCSS to assist with the construction of new schools.

Unfortunately, Pope will have to wait once again as they got so close but did not cross the finish line to break ground on a new K-8 school in northwest Jackson.

No Excuses Teachers have displayed that they can step up to challenges and students now have access to many more online opportunities to learn that ever before. Parents have had an opportunity to learn more about the process as they sheltered at home.

The leadership in the City and the County has proven their support leveraging creative ways to get two new schools built. The library is a tremendous resource for students and parents and we all need to pull together to face the challenges ahead!

“The capacity to learn is a gift; the ability to learn is a skill; the willingness to learn is a choice.” Brian Herbert (SHRM) Let us not forget that this is a Census year and those numbers impact funding for schools and communities. Research the candidates that are running for office and find out where they stand on education. Let’s teach our children how to learn how to learn!

By ‘Downtown’ Rickey Brown Residents of Mission rickeylynnbrown@hotmail.com Convalescent Home receive a special surprise Thursday.Ê A display of people riding in decorated vehicles brought joy and smiles to the residents.Ê Dozens of cars lined up with passengers riding along, holding signs with drivers honking their horns and shouting names of the residents they knew.

“We’ve worked with area home health, home care agencies along with area nursing care homes to do the parades and bring a little cheer to the residents,” said branch director for Senior Solutions Homecare Dana Crotts.

Social distancing is tough enough for everyone but it’s even more stressful for senior citizens who are cut off from their loved ones.

This was an experience for residents they enjoyed and appreciated opportunities to see friends family and see new friends.

“Today brings joy to so many of our residents and also to me and our staff,” said Duane Cherry, administrator of MCH.Ê“Residents have been unable to see their families due to the COVID 19 guidelines, and staff members say it is hitting nursing homes and long term facilities the hardest.”

“It’s national nursing home week so we are celebrating giving them a chance to go outside and enjoy the sunshine,” said activities director at Mission Convalescent Home, Toni Cole.

City officials including Mayor Scott Conger, Jackson Fire Department, Jackson Transit Authority, friends, family and other fraternal organizations waved hello to loves one from a distance.

Crotts said a total of 10 faculties received special visits.

Viral Vinnie and the Covid Cowboy The kind of goofy mass hysteria that we saw with the toilet paper panic over the last couple of months only happens once in a lifetime....or maybe twice if you live long enough .I saw it once before. It was in 1973 that a congressman from Wisconsin issued a press release warning that “The government printing office is facing a serious shortage of paper”. He followed up on this by sending out another a few weeks later that said “ The U.S. could face a serious shortage of toilet paper in the next few months.”Ê People didn’t pay a lot of attention to this and it gained only slight notice by the press. One important person did notice. That person was Johnny Carson. When Carson jokingly made the same comment to 20 million viewers on his television show they took notice. The general public might ignore a congressman, but not Johnny Carson! That monologue was the spark that ignited a panic very similar to the one we just witnessed. Madness erupted. Toilet paper became a treasured item for the next three months as customers wiped out all the stores and depleted the supply chain. They made the warning become a reality.

Everybody likes to be the first person to know something and the first to report it.

Long ago it took a long time for a rumor to grow to the point of coming full circle.

Often by that time people were able to more accurately learn the truth. That’s not true anymore. Now everything is instant. In 1973 the stock market had lost 45% of its value. There were rumors of gasoline shortages, electricity shortages, even shortages of things like onions and other staple items. The public had developed a “shortage psychology” of sorts. Much the same can be said for our current situation. We have developed a “disaster psychology” of sorts. Everything seems to be coming apart at the seams.

Still there are always those that can find the humor (and sometimes profit)t in these happenings. That leads me back to the title of this story. I’m outside in the parking lot of a truck plaza in Kentucky. A man in a cowboy costume (The Covid Cowboy) and a man dressed as the grim reaper (Viral Vinnie) are extending rolls of toilet paper from the end of what appears to be a long broom handle to the men parked in big-rig trucks and also thoseÊ that are coming and going from the store.

Actually only one of them is extending toilet paper. The other is extending a bucket with “donations” written on it. Maybe later the local T.V. station will come out to film it. Maybe someone will put itÊ on You Tube or Facebook. Maybe they will just swap toilet paper for beer money.Ê Either way maybe someone else (not me) will write about it in another 47 years, that is if history repeats itself......and it always does. If you’re young start saving toilet paper now for that day. That’s how superheros are made.

Governor Lee lifts restrictions - C

The announcement from the Tennessee’s Economic Recovery Group Friday is for 89 of the states 95 counties and the next phase of reopening will go into effect Friday May 22.

According to the Governor’s press release, the capacity restrictions and guidelines will be issued to facilitate the safe reopening of larger, non contact attractions on or after May 22.

Madison, Shelby, Davidson, Hamilton, Knox and Sullivan Counties may continue following individual, county specific reopening plans created.

Restrictions on gatherings of more than 10 people remain in effect for the time being. Updates on restaurants guidance will include a lift on capacity restrictions which will allow for increased service as long as social distancing guidelines are followed including keeping tables six fee apart.

Love in a COVID-19 World

By Wendy Mercer - Jackson, TN How do we love our neighbors as ourselves when we are mandated to stay six feet apart?

It’s not easy. No hugs. No handshakes. Just a distant nod.

Thanks to the new COVID-19 pandemic, this virus now limits our very social existence. No non essential visits are allowed, not even to see our family and friends, No church services either because we might get too close.

I thought love and the human touch were essential and non-negotiable. That’s not the case anymore while this virus is among us.

Our new love language is safely delivering food and toiletry essentials from our loaded grocery cart.

We share our love and stay in touch these days by simulcast, text, Tik Tok, or Skype.

Even Zoom will do. As a matter of fact, I saw a couple just the other day jump the broom’ from an online platform. No guests were allowed at their wedding. They literally shared virtual “I do’s.”

Yet, the further we are mandated to stay apart, the closer we get together. Yes, social distancing makes the heart grow fonder. We are growing fonder of new ways to share and spread love thanks to all of our new technology tools.
