RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A first-grade Virginia teacher who was shot and seriously wounded by her 6-year-old student has filed a lawsuit seeking $40 million in damages from Newport News school officials. The lawsuit filed Monday accuses school administrators of gross negligence for allegedly ignoring multiple warnings on the day of the shooting that the boy had a gun and was in a “violent mood.” Abby Zwerner, a 25-year-old teacher at Richneck Elementary School, was shot in the hand and chest on Jan. 6 as she sat at a reading table in

Women in Rotary Tea Party Pours Efforts Into Girls’ Empowerment SOCIALLY SEEN

Special thanks to everyone who attended the first Women in Rotary Tea Party held at First United Methodist Church in Downtown Jackson. Rotary is an international service organization that is dedicated to the motto: “Service above self.” Rotary focuses on humanitarian service projects in six key areas that include: peace and conflict prevention/ resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy, and economic and community development.

Women throughout West Tennessee attended the March 25th Rotary tea that also doubled as a fundraiser to purchase hygiene packs for girls in need in West Tennessee schools. The event also provided a unique opportunity for women to network and learn from one another, especially the women who were new to Rotary.

keynote speaker, shared the history of women leaders in Rotary. That history included a Supreme Court ruling in 1987 that found that Rotary International did not have the First Amendment right to exclude women as members. That ultimately spurred a vote in 1989 in which Rotary International accepted women as members after being known as a private men’s civic club since the founding of Rotary in 1905 by a Chicago lawyer named Paul Harris. Since being admitted into Rotary, women have advanced to many leadership roles within the organization.

Jackson-Old Hickory Rotary Club President Shelley Hayes organized

the committee to bring the Women in Rotary Tea Party event to West Tennessee this year. She announced that the tea will be an annual event in March to coincide with International Women’s History Month. Hayes enlisted the support of Rotary clubs throughout West Tennessee. (In Jackson, there are three Rotary clubs: The Jackson Rotary Club, the Jackson-Old Hickory Rotary Club, and the Jackson Good Evening Rotary Club.)

Empowering and creating equity for girls is a major initiative of Rotary International.

wonderful to see attendees working together to assemble hygiene packs with inspirational messages for more than 200 young girls.” The packs were boxed and donated to area schools and nonprofit groups that empower girls, including S.W.A.G.

Don’t play with me, pray with me. Have U ever wondered why most preachers don’t preach about Heaven & Hell in Revelation? I give U one reason, the congregation don’t want to hear about what happens after you plant because then they need to preach about what type of harvest you can expect. So let me preach one of their sermons: you will reap what you sow-Gal.6,7-8. When you sow on anointed soil, you can expect those crops to come N early. Some of U preachers should tell my patrons, “ the boy preaching.” C U!

NAACP Hosts Forum for Mayoral Candidates

The Jackson Madison County NAACP branch hosted a forum for Mayoral candidates for the City of Jackson Saturday at the NAACP local branch offices. All candidates for Jackson Mayor with the exception of incumbent Mayor Scott Conger attended the forum. Ray Condray continued to share his concerns for equality and fairness in the distribution and delivery of city services to all people in the city. Condray stressed fairness and his pledge to serve all citizens fairly if elected Mayor. Current city court clerk Daryl Hubbard emphasized the lack of transparency and honesty currently plaguing city hall and the present Mayor. Hubbard said “we know what’s going on at city hall with reports of missing 1/2 million dollars

and upcoming lawsuit against the Mayor Conger, and unless the citizens of Jackson vote for a change the current unfair treatment of people will continue”.

Hubbard continues to stress he is the most qualified candidate to be Jackson’s next Mayor” and asks the people for your votes” Newcomer to politics

Lisa Lyons-Williams brought to the attention of those present her difficulties trying to obtain public documents at city hall and the lack of transparency and openness she has received, she said “there are millions of dollars being given to the City of Jackson in the forum of grants that never makes it to the disadvantaged areas in the community” I live in the neigh-

borhoods which are continued to be neglected in housing, and receiving our fair share of public monies for making our neighborhoods better” I am the voice for those who are ignored and forgotten by our city leaders”

Dr Jerry Woods emphasized “his plan to make Jackson a better place to live and work when he’s elected the next Jackson Mayor” Woods says he has plans to put an emphasis on supporting education, more opportunities for all citizens especially the youth of our city.” He stressed his lifetime experience working for the City of Jackson

Civitan has Annual Pancake Breakfast

Over 500 folks enjoyed the return of the famous South Jackson Civitan clubs annual pancake breakfast Saturday at Bemis First Baptist Church. Club President Michelle Wyatt and members welcomed people throughout the area for a wonderful gourmet pancake breakfast with wonderful friends, family and fellowship. Citizens enjoyed the great breakfast along with local city candidates for Mayor and city council greeted those in attendance. Jackson Mayoral candidates Dr Jerry Woods, Daryl Hubbard and Ray Condray along with district 1 city council candidate J. P. Stovall were in attendance. South Jackson Civitan Club continues to provide exemplary volunteer service to the community in their many worthwhile projects.

Investigators determined that Boyd stole at least $2,757 in collections from July 31, 2019 until his employment was terminated on August 26, 2019.

Boyd failed to receipt and remit $2,757 of the $8,163 in fees that he collected from his clients. In some cases, he used an unauthorized receipt book to issue receipts to his clients. This was done in an effort to conceal his

Linda Douglas was sitting around enjoying her afternoon when her husband Andrew told her to grab a pole and lets go catch some fresh air. Little did she know that instead of just catching some fresh air she would end up catching the biggest fish of her life. Turns out it was about a nine pound hybrid striped bass. She caught it with a long pole using shrimp for bait. Most people use shrimp for catfish but in her case the bass was more interested and beat the catfish to the delicious treat. Now the bass has turned into a delicious treat of fillet fish with few bones to worry about for Linda and Andrew.

Players recognized as Miss Basketball Finalists

I attended almost every Tennessee high school state tournament basketball game this year and have watched most of the March Madness games. There is nothing that I have enjoyed more than getting to witness three of my former players being recognized as Miss Basketball Finalists. Ti’Mia Lawson (Jackson Southside) won it this year and Kylie Reynolds (McKenzie) and Olivia Lee (Trinity Christian Academy) were finalist. Olivia Lee won Miss Basketball last year. I knew we had a good team when I started coaching these girls in the third grade, but I didn’t know that I had three future Miss Basketball Finalists. These three have also won a TSSAA State Championship! Kylie has won two state championships! That entire group of girls was extremely talented and more importantly they all are great human beings. They are all still really good friends today and that’s what it is all about…. lasting relationships! All of them have bright futures ahead of them! I am honored and proud that I got the chance to be their Coach!

Old Timer’s Thoughts….

We just experienced a school tragedy in Tennessee. I am glad they are rare, but one in a year is not acceptable. I watched the news and read the websites during the first twelve hours of that day.

Politicians, media, and activists immediately responded with diverse messages more than offering condolences. The next morning, the “Blame Game” from the Talking Heads and Armchair Experts flooded media and the web. It only took a few hours for a discussion about Mental Illness as the cause and the traditional sermons from the anti-gun side. I have previously mentioned working about three decades in mental health services. Many changes occurred over that period. One common practice in mental health services has been 100 plus years of DISPARITY IN THE TREATMENT OF THOSE SUFFERING A MENTAL ILLNESS. The treatment for Diabetes, Heart Disease, and Cancer is funded and delivered

better for even the poorest among us than those services for the Chronically Mentally Ill in America. I would suggest that those of you with “good insurance” provided by your employer, that you examine your covered benefits and limits. Most medical insurance companies limit Mental Health Treatment days in a hospital to 10 to 30 per year, if not lifetime.

I have just about made it to age 71. Over the course of my life and work, I have known many that ended their own lives and many that unnatural causes ended their lives. I believe without doubt that diseases do not cause 99% of violent deaths of another. We can find individual cases of a person with diabetes has an Insulin imbalance while driving and causes a death just as occasionally a person with a confirmed mental illness harms another with a weapon. A patient inside the Pathways Intake for Crisis attacked a worker with an “Ink Pen” and caused lasting damage. It was recently dis-

cussed on Channel 7. But so often, Mental Illness is the “Go To Excuse” when bad things happen to good people.

I do want to point out that the federal government for about 40 Years has had a question on the background check forms that asked about mental illness involuntary commitments. I will quote that form: Q. h. : “ Have you ever been adjudicated as a mental defective OR have you ever been committed to a mental institution?”. Gun Store must use this form. The occasional breakdown of the process is when the Court responsible for Reporting Commitments to the ATF or NCIS Data Base is not done. As a rule 95% of the diagnosed mental illnesses are nothing that indicates potential for harm. You might know it, but it is likely you work with someone suffering mild depression. Please Remember this: any name of a disease is just that, A DISEASE SHOULD NOT BE A PRONOUN FOR A HUMAN BEING. That’s my thoughts, please think about it.
