The Madison County Ethics Committee unanimously decided Tuesday afternoon that Jackson-Madison County School Board member Morris Merriweather violated the Madison County Code of Ethics in February when he sent what was deemed a threatening email to retired JMCSS employee Cathy Vinson.

COUNTY COMMISSION APPROVE MONEY FOR INMATE MEALS JACKSON, Tenn. – Dispite rejecting the request last month, the Madison County Commission voted -Monday - to approve more money for the Madison County Sheriff, reports the Jackson Sun. “Madison County Sheriff John Mehr asked county commissioners for $168,000 for the rest of the year to provide food for inmates,” the Sun reported. “Sheriff Mehr says the budget came up short due to an increase in inmates.” The Sheirff Department has exceeded it’s proposed 2019 budget by more than $1 million. POLICE INVESTIGATE HOMICIDE AT 33 CARVER AVE PLAN TO INCREASE PRESENCE IN TARGETED AREA On April 15, 2019, around 11:45 p.m., Jackson police responded to a Shot Spotter alert at 33 Carver Avenue. Officers arrived to find a victim with gunshot wounds near the C building. The victim was identified as Cornelius Fields, 36, of Jackson. Fields was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators responded, processed the crime scene and attempted to interview witnesses. The case is active and ongoing as police are attempting to develop leads.

Jackson Police Chief Julian Wiser said, “Due to the recent uptick in shots fired calls and gang violence in that area, the police department will be adding additional resources. The Street Crimes Unit and Gang Enforcement Team will have a strong, proactive presence. I encourage community members to stay involved and call the police if you see criminal activity in your neighborhood.”

MADISON COUNTY ETHICS COMMITTEE UNANIMOUSLY DECIDES - CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 Merriweather, who represents District 6 of the school district, was found to have violated Section VII (Coercion of Employee) of the Madison County Code of Ethics, which states: “No Madison County official, department head, or employee shall, directly or indirectly, use or threaten to use, any official authority or any influence in any manner whatsoever which tends: (1) to coerce any person to participate in political activities, an election campaign, or fundraising effort; or (2) to discourage, restrain, deter, prevent, interfere with, or discriminate against any person who chooses to participate in political activities, an election campaign, or fundraising effort.”

The complaint stated that an “elected official investigated, with malicious intent, the Vinson and Kirkbride families and Cathy Vinson their employment relationships with the Jackson-Madison County School System and threatened to publically call for their resignations.”

The committee made its decision that Merriweather was in violation of the ethics code inside the Madison County Complex, located at 1981 Hollywood Drive, following nearly an hour of discussion on the issue.

Michael Steele, chairman of the Ethics Committee, said he will submit a report, which will include minutes from Tuesday’s meeting, to the Madison County Commission, which will decide on how to proceed.

The commission’s next meeting is scheduled for May 20.

Madison County Attorney Steve Maroney said based on the issue and type of violation, there were only two out of four options that were applicable for the committee to choose from: (1) refer the matter to the County Attorney for a legal opinion and/or recommendations for action or (2) in the case of an official, refer the matter to the county legislative body for possible public censure if the county legislative body finds such action warranted.

Vinson, who sat in the meeting with her husband Billy by her side, said she hopes that the county commission will take a serious look at the report and minutes from Tuesday’s meeting.

“I hope they will take it seriously, the county commission will look at it seriously and do what they think is best and right,” Vinson said after the meeting was adjourned. “I appreciate this committee. They certainly spent time on it and they looked into it carefully. I appreciate that.”

In an early Wednesday morning statement to the CrimeSeen Examiner News, Merriweather cited a case “that clearly states that an elected official cannot be ousted for misjudgment (which Merriweather told an Ethics Committee member he made when he emailed Vinson a second time). This case being sent to the Madison County Commission is as President Donald J. Trump would say, ‘faked news & a witch hunt.’ Mr. Marable has also been provided with the Madison County School Board’s policy (1.106) that states that the board can establish its own Ethics Board, if the board receives a complaint. The complaint never was filed with the school board because the Republican commissioners felt the majority school board members would’ve (found) me not guilty, so they decided to hear the case among themselves and refer their findings to the Republican commissioners to begin ousting proceeding.”

At the beginning of Tuesday’s meeting, Steele acknowledged that there were seven other complaints filed against Merriweather that were “primarily based on Mr. Merriweather’s personal emails to Mrs. Vinson,” Steele said.

Lexington landlord faces federal discrimination suit April 15, 2019ÊÊWBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Staff LEXINGTON, Tenn. — A Lexington landlord is facing a federal lawsuit alleging sexual harassment and retaliation against female tenants, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

The U.S Attorney’s Office said in a news release Monday that Chad David Ables violated the Fair Housing Act by subjecting his female tents to harassment.

The lawsuit alleges that Ables harassed a number of female tenants by allegedly including conditions in housing agreements that female tenants would engage in sexual acts, subjected at least one tenant to unwanted touching, and made sexual comments or advances toward female tenants, according to the release.

“I thought I was just being a good citizen, contacting my representative and I thought it was a very polite email,” Vinson said. “I read it over several times.”

Merriweather was the only one who replied back and Vinson said his first email did not make her feel threatened.

“I just knew he was telling me how he felt,” Vinson said.

MADISON COUNTY ETHICS COMMITTEE - CONT’D FROM PAGE 1 following day, an email which mentioned the employment of her daughters, husband and son-in-law and calling for resignations and investigations, Vinson said she felt her family was being threatened and intimidated.

According to a statement of clarification, given by Merriweather to Ethics Committee member Tracey Snider on March 29, after sending the second email, Merriweather received a phone call from Jones, who had concern about the email.

“I expressed to him that I sent the last email to her out of frustration after I had received several other insulting emails,” Merriweather said in the statement.

“I told Dr. Jones that Mrs. Vinson’s particular email was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Merriweather said in the statement that once he realized that Vinson had several family members on the county payroll, he wrote the second email and sent it to her.

“I was trying to make a strong point about her viewpoint, but not threaten,” he said.

Merriweather said once he and Jones finished talking, he immediately called Vinson’s son-in-law Ryan Kirkbride, who works in Central Office. “(I) apologized to him and asked him to convey my apologies to all of his family members, including his mother-in-law Cathy Vinson,” Merriweather said in his statement. “I also said to him that I would apologize to her directly if he would provide me her phone number or give her my phone number.”

Merriweather said he didn’t think sending another email to Vinson would be the appropriate thing to do “since prior emails had caused the problem.”

Merriweather ended his statement by saying, “To this date (March 29), I have not heard back from Mr. Kirkbride. I assumed my apology to the entire family was well received.”

Merriweather, in an early Wednesday morning statement said, “I thought everything was ok until I learned of the charge of ethic violation.”

According to the report of Ethics Committee member Curtis E. Howard, who interviewed Vinson, Vinson did not reply to Merriweather’s second email.

“However, being very troubled, she forwarded it to all school board members (including Merriweather) on Friday, February 22,” the report said. “The letter was then posted on Facebook with Mrs. Vinson’s permission by school board member Wayne Arnold and became public.”

The report also stated that “Mr. Merriweather has stated publically that apologies were made to all family members, however, Ryan Kirkbride was the only one who was communicated with.”

Ê Ê How would you feel if you were sitting on the couch eating pizza and watching Leave it to Beaver and 30 minutes later you found yourself in the basement of a police station being questioned about a grisly triple homicide? I’ll tell you how I felt, but first here’s a little background to the story. Ê Ê I was scanning someÊ old newspaper articles when I came across this: “Ronald Ward dies in prison hospital at age 37” Ê Ê On April 12,1985 Ronald Ward was a 14 year old West Memphis Ark. child in the mid-term of repeating 7th grade for the 3rd time. After school on that day he went 2 blocks from his home over to his best friends house. After that things went hay wire.

Ronald stabbed to death his 12 year old friend and the 2 great-aunts that his friend lived with. They were ages 72 and 76. Weapon of choice (or opportunity) was a butcher knife. It was a bloody mess. Multiple stab wounds to each. Afterwards it would take a West Memphis jury only 2 hours of deliberation to make Ronald the youngest prison inmate on death row in the nation at that time. His sentence was later changed to life without parole. He died 21 years later in prison from a medical condition. How does this connect to me? I was living in West MemphisÊ and at the time was managing a retail store. When the police knocked at my door I assumed they wanted me to come to the station toÊ probably discuss an employee or some incident related to my business.

Upon arrival there I was directed to the basement where I was asked a series of questions by the by the investigators. Many of the questions were about my mother. Where was she? What kind of car does she drive? Where was I at the time of the crime? Do I know this person or that person? I answered the questions calmly and politely. (1) My mother is in Mississippi (2) She has no car. She does not drive, (3) I was at work. At least 100 people can verify that. I am also on camera all day long. (4) I have never heard of these people you mention. Ê Ê It became evident very quickly that I knew nothing and I was thanked and set free. .I did not get angry at, or bad mouth the police. They have a serious job to do. They go about in a detailed and systematic way. That is how it has to be done for justice to be served. I did find out what had happened. It seems that they had picked up a suspect and while riding in their police car the suspect pointed to my house and in a totally random gesture had said “I was in that apartment that night”. I have no idea why he did that. He did not commit the crime, but apparently had been somewhere he didn’t want the police to know about. Go figure.Ê Ê Ê I missed the rest of Leave it to Beaver, but I do know that in this episode The Beaver was sent to bed without dinner for skipping school. I missed my dinner too. I suppose Ronald Ward did as well. There are lessons that I learned from this experience. What they say about “If you didn’t do anything wrong, you have nothing to be afraid of” is true. Also, “Don’t skip school”. Ê Ê In only a few years this event would be overshadowed by an even bigger event in this same neighborhood: the Robin Hood Hills Murders. Another triple homicide involving kids.Ê A lot of dinners are missed in West Memphis for a lot of reasons. Too many reasons.

C S a h It’s now time for this edition m a of Hair Talk! i v l ÊI bring you greetings from o l n theÊ 2019 Bronner Bros e International Hair Show held in New Orleans.Ê Over 40,000 Stylists, Barbers, Students, as well as those simply interested in beauty / fashion were in attendance to create this record breaking number.Ê There were more than 300 vendors and a plethora of classes to help further educate those in the Beauty Industry.Ê Two of my favorite Competitions showcasedÊ were the “ Champion of Weaves ‘ as Shu’Carra Cuthery of Atlanta, GA took home first place.Ê Second is the Fantasy Competition where I am always in Awe of the elaborate styles and costumes.

This years theme was Mardi - Gras as Merlande Petithomme of Hiram,Ga took home First Place, followed by Celebrity StylistÊ Terrance Davidson (2 ND) and Timothy Cadell(3rd).

All 12 contestants were Fabulous as they were judge for technical hair execution,Ê make up, costume, originality and use of new shapes,Ê colors,Ê textures, and styles.Ê Bronner Bros is “ the Nation’s largest trade show dedicated to the business of multi-million cultural beauty”.Ê The Bronner Bros Corporation is not only dedicated to the business of beauty but has passion for those personsÊ in the Beauty Industry Mr. James Bronner presented a $10,000 check to John and Dr Beverly Smith of Unity-1 Salon, one of the oldest salons in New Orleans destroyed by fire in March.Ê Bronner Bros is a company dedicated and committed to the people.Ê For more information contact:
