City Hall Honors History of Black Americans

In Downtown Jackson, a diverse crowd filled City Hall last Friday to see the finale of the city’s four-part Black History Month celebration. Throughout the month of February, various Jackson artists and performers were featured every Friday at City Hall to highlight and honor the contributions of Black Americans.

For the finale, dancers from the Mona Lisa Lanier School of Dance took center stage. The dancers wearing traditional African kente cloth delivered a riveting performance that included beautiful elements of praise dances to soul-stirring gospel music. The finale featured singers from the Hub City Mass Choir. Destiny Church of Jackson Pastor Rhonda Pettigrew also rendered a powerful prayer.

“My vision was to bring Black History Month to City Hall,” said Angela Harvey, executive assistant to the mayor. “I told Mayor Conger my vision and he said absolutely! I’m just thankful to him for saying yes to the vision. Thank you to all the artists, performers, historians, singers, and the community for showing up and helping us celebrate. Black History is American History.”

Any time I visit City Hall, I walk by a permanent reminder on a plaque outside of the City Hall building that symbolizes the history and civil rights legacy in Jackson. The plaque reads: “On this site in the fall of 1960, Lane College students and other civil rights participants sat at the F.W. Woolworth lunch counter to begin the successful integration of public accommodations in Downtown Jackson.” During February, the front of City Hall was also lit up in red, yellow, and green colors to commemorate Black History Month.

Marvin Bond II is glad that he had the opportunity to attend the city’s Black History program finale at City Hall. “It’s culturally significant,” Bond said. He said he is glad that the celebration also teaches children how to uniquely express their talents. Through the performance, “they honor their culture in their own way” and it also shows the importance of passing on traditions to the next generation.

Kassie Grissom, a University of Memphis-Lambuth education major, attended last Friday’s performance with her mom, Krystal Grissom. Kassie, 21, is a former dancer from the Mona Lisa Lanier School of Dance. “I danced from eighth grade to senior year,” Kassie said. Krystal said dancing helped her daughter, Kassie, come out of her shell. The dance community that Mona Lisa Lanier created is “inclusive and allows everyone to shine,” Kassie said.

Mona Lisa Lanier is on a mission to impact people in a positive way through dance. “All I want for people is love, peace, joy, happiness and good health,” Lanier said. She is grateful that she and her dancers were invited to be a part of the Black History Month celebration at City Hall. “I think it’s wonderful!” Lanier said. The finale featured dancers who are all students from the Jackson-Madison County School system. Lanier invites the public to continue to support her dancers’ upcoming performances. Mona Lisa Lanier School of Dance presents, “Livin’ It Up” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 6 at the Carl Perkins Civic Center. Tickets are $16 in advance and $20 at the door. The “Livin’ It Up’ performance includes dancers from ages 2 to 73. Lanier also announced that auditions will be held May 15-18 for the highly anticipated dance production of “Dream Girls” at The Ned. For more information about the upcoming performances and to purchase tickets, call 731-616-4669.

“Chief Samuels has served the City of Jackson for 40 years. Mayor Conger said in his time as Mayor, he’s looked up to Chief Samuels for advise in a variety of areas.

HUD AWARDS $5.6 BILLION IN ANNUAL GRANTS FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT, AND HOMELESS ASSISTANCE

Funding will go to 1,200 communities through 2,400 grants to support the needs of families and individuals

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today announced $5.6 billion in funding will go to 1,200 communities through more than 2,400 grants to States, urban counties, insular areas, DC, Puerto Rico, and local organizations across the country. These annual formula grants provide critical funding for a wide range of activities including affordable housing, community development, and homeless assistance. View a complete list of all the communities who received funding.

“Viable communities must promote integrated approaches to develop decent housing, suitable living environments, and expand economic opportunities to the most vulnerable,” said HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. “These funds allow communities to address their unique needs by prioritizing what matters most to their residents and letting them own their investments in community development through these important federal resources.”

“This funding allows communities to address their most pressing local needs, providing flexible resources to build homes, support renters and homeowners, provide life-saving assistance to people experiencing homelessness, and improve public facilities, community resilience, and local economies,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development Marion McFadden. “HUD’s annual formula block grants allow states and localities to invest in the success of neighborhoods and allow people of modest means to thrive.”

The grants announced today are provided through the following HUD programs:

$3.3 billion to 1239 states and localities to build stronger communities— The Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) provides annual grants on a formula basis to states, cities, counties, and insular areas to develop stronger, more resilient communities by providing decent housing and a suitable living environment, and by expanding economic opportunities, principally for low- and moderate-income people. In 2022 the program helped over 60,000 families through housing activities, 46,000 individuals through job creation or retention, 83,500 people experiencing homelessness through improvements to homelessness facilities, over 5.3 million people through public services, and over 39 million people through public improvements.

$1.5 billion to 664 participating jurisdictions to produce affordable housing — The HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) is the primary Federal tool of States and local governments to produce affordable rental and owner-occupied housing for low-income families. HOME funds a wide range of activities including building, buying, and/ or rehabilitating affordable housing for rent or homeownership or providing direct rental assistance to low-income people. HOME projects leverage non-federal funds including, in many cases, tax credits for affordable rental housing. In 2022 the program helped create over 15,000 units of housing and nearly 17,000 households were assisted with tenant based rental assistance through the HOME program.

$499 million to 130 qualifying cities and eligible states to connect people with HIV/AIDS to housing and support — The Housing Opportunities for Persons With HIV/AIDS (HOPWA) program provides stable and permanent housing assistance and supportive services to low-income people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Over 100,000 households receive HOPWA housing assistance and/or supportive services annually.

$290 million to 359 states and localities to address homelessness — Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) provides funds for homeless shelters, assists in the operation of local shelters, and funds related social service and homeless prevention programs. Recipients enable people to quickly regain stability in permanent housing after experiencing a housing crisis and/or homelessness. ESG funds may be used for street outreach, emergency shelter, homelessness prevention, and rapid re-housing assistance. Annually, ESG connects over 350,000 people to emergency shelter as they transition to permanent housing

$30 million to 23 States and the District of Columbia to support recovery from substance use disorder— The Recovery Housing Program (RHP) allows States and the District of Columbia to provide stable, transitional housing for individuals in recovery from a substance-use disorder. Combined the programs will provide critically needed funding to thousands of local programs in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Guam, American Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands. 03/02/23

IT’S A WRAP

The scramble is over and small game hunters can now sit back and reminisce about the fun season they had. This is really a sad time for winter outdoorpersons who wait a whole year to enjoy the sport only to see the season soar by like a flock of geese and then it is gone.

Yes, not only do birds fly but time flies even faster for those of us who have a short window to engage in winter activities.

February 28 marked the last day for small game hunting and enthusiast must turn their attention to other sports like fishing. It is also gloomy to have to pack away hunting cloths for a full year as well as to see hound dogs looking out their cages with those lonely eyes knowing it is over for a while. They do instinctively know when the season open and when it closes.

Fortunately, most hunters do fish and get to transform their energy into another area until that winter season opens back up.

The Great Outdoors of West Tennessee offers many other options so it is time to switch gears and continue the time spent in nature.

PUT WINGS ON YOUR DREAMS

The small change

Wellness Coach THINK HEALTHY- LIVE HEALTHY one small change at a time small change Wings of Gratitude

After recently retiring from four decades of service in the health field as a nurse and public health administrator, I created the small change Toolkit, a set of transformational tools designed to help women build and maintain a consciousness of health, one small change at a time. It’s the missing piece of the health and wellness puzzle.

One tool in the toolkit is my small change Wings of Gratitude Blog. I created the blog to share my passions, knowledge and 40 years of what I’ve termed “blessons” (a combination of lessons and blessings) with anyone interested in improving their overall health and well-being, regardless of the circumstances.

Gratitude is the most powerful tool in my small change Toolkit. Why? Because it has taught me that everything I’ve encountered in life - the good and the bad, the pleasant and the unpleasant, the joy and the pain, have all been blessons that have shaped who I am today and left me no choice but to share them with others.

Although gratitude is often described as an emotion we feel towards people, places or things that have done us a great favor or brought us some form of pleasure, it is so much more. Gratitude is life-changing. It’s been scientifically proven to have a multitude of health benefits. Studies show that people who regularly practice grateful living have better physical and mental health, increased energy levels, improved sleep, and overall increased life satisfaction.

In The Psychology of Gratitude (2004), edited by expert psychologists, Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough, scientist Barbara L. Frederickson, professor of psychology and principal investigator of the Positive Emotions and Psychophysiology Laboratory at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, posits that “through experiences of positive emotions, individuals can transform themselves, becoming more creative, knowledgeable, resilient, socially integrated, and healthy.”

I know the power of Gratitude and have blessons to prove it. I tapped into its transformative power when I began gratitude journaling over twenty-five years ago when heartbreak knocked me to my knees and forced me to do the “heart work” of self-discovery. It was a simple gratitude list that connected me to a Myrtle that I had forgotten existed and introduced me to the power of learning to live grateful, one small change one small changed at a time.

Ten years of research has taught me a lot about gratitude and everything I’d learned about it was tested in 2017 when my daughter, Mia, suffered a massive stroke. She was only 37 years old. The stroke left Mia with right-side paralysis, extensive damage to the language and memory centers of her brain, and visually impaired. Within a matter of minutes, she went from being a vibrant nurse to a young woman who had to revisit everything she had learned in kindergarten. I, on the other hand, became a caregiver and teacher, something no mother ever imagines having to do for her child.

Yes, life had thrown us a curve ball, but gratitude had taught me to be grateful in all things; to look for the good in what appeared to be the worst situations. So I thanked God in advance for guidance. I dug deep into what I knew. And I watched the blessons unfold, one day and one small change at a time. They put Mia on the road to recovery. They gave me strength as a mother and caregiver. They inspired us to share our story in our book, The Stroke That Touched My Heart (2019).

What we learned through grateful living is testament to what world-renowned 13th century philosopher and mystic, Meister Eckhart had to say about gratitude: “If the only prayer you said was thank you that would be enough.”

There is not a single person on earth who can’t benefit from living grateful and the

small change Wings of Gratitude Blog is here to help you get started. But here’s a word of caution: It’s not a quick fix. Why? Because quick fixes don’t work and if you’re honest with yourself, you know it!

Let’s use dieting as an example. If diets worked, Americans would be the skinniest and healthiest people on earth. But we aren’t. According to the 2020 report from the Bloomberg Global Index, a study that ranks 163 countries based on variables such as life expectancy, environmental factors, and health risks including malnutrition, high blood pressure, and tobacco use, America was nowhere near the top. It ranked 37th in terms of overall health, primarily due to obesity and unhealthy lifestyles. So if you’re looking for a quick fix, you’re in the wrong place! If you’re ready to finally take charge of your health, I’m here to help.

So, ask yourself this question: “How am I doing when it comes to my overall health?” Are you......

….struggling to manage a medical condition? A DOSE of Gratitude can help!

…. battling to maintain a healthy weight? Try the Gratitude “LOW DOWN!” ….stuck in revolving doors of incarceration and addiction? Gratitude holds the KEY! ….heavy-laden wearing the “Super Mom” cape? Gratitude LIGHTENs the load …. “sandwiched” between children and aging parents? Gratitude is a TIME saver…. stressed by life’s uncertainties? Grateful living is PEACEFUL living

PERRY COUNTY – A former Perry County Sheriff’s Deputy has been charged with aggravated rape and official misconduct following an investigation by special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

At the request of 21st Judicial District Attorney General Kim Helper, in December 2021, agents began investigating a complaint that then-Perry County Deputy Jonathan Kelly sexually assaulted a female during a traffic stop. During the course of the investigation, agents developed information that Kelly indicated to the woman that she wouldn’t be charged, in exchange for engaging in sexual contact.

On February 22nd, the Perry County Grand Jury returned indictments charging Jonathan Allen Kelly (DOB 12/27/1991) with one count of Aggravated Rape and one count of Official Misconduct. On Monday, Kelly was arrested and booked into the Perry County Jail on a $65,000 bond.
